the entire block roped off, a bunch of investigators on the scene. this is video from earlier. three people shot, all taken to the hospital. folks who live here said that one of them appeared to be in critical condition, but no confirmation from the police of that. i spoke to remain off camera said he was walking home from work when he heard gunshots rang out. he said everybody around him, including himself, began running. they said they heard as many as 30 shots fired. one of the people which shot rain inside a nearby apartment building for cover. folks who live here say there was another shooting a couple blocks from here last night at about the same time, starting a couple blocks from here, ending up at the apartment here on edgewood street. right now the police say it is still early on the investigation and they do not have answers why. right now we do not have a lookout as to who they are looking for, but a number of police investigators on the scene, trying to figure out what happened. we get more details, we will get back to you. for now, live in d.c., roz plater, abc 7 news. jonathan: new development, a solemn journey for the four marines who were killed yesterday in the shooting. they were led by a convoy transfer to helicopters, flown to the military mortuary in dover, delaware. tonight, a more clear picture about the victims and the shooter. as roz plater reports, forensic teams are pouring over his recent communications. roz: in may of 2013, he was hired as an engineer at in ohio nuclear power plant in cleveland. he was let go 10 days later after failing a background check. a federal official now says it was because of a failed drug test. the company says he was never allowed near any restricted areas. they are looking into his background for answers of why he opened fire at two military facilities in chattanooga killing four marines and injuring others. a family member said he was born in the u.s., but the fbi says he was born in kuwait and came here with his jordanian parents as an infant. he grew up in tennessee and a sixth grade classmate said they'll remember the terror attacks of 9/11. >> when that happened, he took it as an american. he did not take it as a muslim as a kuwaiti, he took it as an american. roz: they are looking at his foreign travel, particularly after a trip to jordan last year. they say he could have been radicalized. >> the targets are identical to the targets called by isis to attack. jonathan: did i come in first look at the victims and the lives they left behind. thomas sullivan, a council on islamic-american relations is condemning the shooting, but calling for extra security after acts of vandalism's at a muslim association in manassas. linda hernandez has the investigation. linda: that's right, mosque leaders purchased surveillance cameras about six months ago. they said they have not felt the need to install them until now. >> this was last week. and up here. and this was today for stop linda: he showed us the damage outside of the mosque today, a first since it opened a year ago. >> we are in a pathway where people drive by and say, "go back home," lack of knowledge ignorance on the people's part. just because i don't look like somebody else does not mean this is not my home. linda: they said that vandals cut the wiring to their air-conditioning system last week, then again last night. he suspects it may have been retaliation for yesterday shooting of former rains in tennessee. -- of four marines in tennessee. >> as a nation, where we had it? linda: the national spokesman for the council of islamic relations urged law enforcement to investigate these incidents as a possible hate crime. >> whoever is doingwould say, look, this is a house of worship. people are going there to pray and these kind of ask only serve to intimidate -- and these kind of acts only serve to intimidate people who are their faith as all americans do. linda: the police have no suspects at this point, but they are in front of the mosque to try to defer any more vandals. jonathan: getting ready for a heat wave this weekend at a chance of rain and storms. steve cars stuck in traffic. drivers abandoned their cars and ran away. no word if anybody was injured. an evacuation center was set up at a nearby high school. right now, a search for a gunman who shot two security guards and capitol heights. this happened at the central garden apartments this morning. the guards were sit and personal -- were sitting and personal cars and some of the ambushed and shot them. the other suffered nonlife threatening injuries. the one who was killed has been identified as a 26-year-old from northwest washington. >> he loved life he loved people. he was a people person, happy going. jonathan: officers are reviewing security camera video for possible clues and have not yet identified any suspects. they say the guards were targeted, although they have not provided a motive. a guilty plea from the team behind the wheel during a deadly dwi crash. that happened in olnmey labor day weekend of last year. austin hall was going 119 miles per hour and a 35 mile per hour zone and was legally drunk. a man who was sitting in the backseat was ejected and killed. tonight, we are hearing from another teen who was a passenger in the car. >> if you are drunk and going to party and need a ride home, just go to your parents'. they will be mad that you are drunk, but they will be happier doing that than getting in a car and getting an accidental stop parents don't want that. it's awful. jonathan: austin hall faces 12 years in prison when he is sentenced in september. a teacher at a girls catholic schools behind the bars. justin gordon is accused of having inappropriate sexual contact with two students. he has since been fired from the connelly school the only child in potomac, but the case has many parents upset. reporter: this happened at an all girls catholic school, surrounded by multimillion dollar homes and a country club in potomac. tonight, a former teacher is charged with four different things, the most serious being two charges of sexual abuse of a minor. emery county police say this past school year, justin gordon slowly escalated a relationship with a student. >> engaged in what detectives called booming. tom: it started in october when the 40-year-old gordon asked to the 17-year-old girl to play tennis and took her to to dinner. he communications with her every day, giving her gifts and complements, even spending the night on her couch when she was home alone after making her dinner valentine's day. in may at the school, he allegedly groped her. >> after investigating her experiences, we identified a sector victim -- a second victim. tom: in 2012, the girl allegedly led her to the chapel and kissed and touched her, then told her not to tell because he would be fired. the police believe there could be other victims. >> we want to make very certain that any victims know that it would be safe to come forward. tom: the school principal tells us the school does a background check of everyone they hire. she says that gordon himself was initially placed on leave and authorities contacted after the school learned of this, then he was fired. from the newsroom, tom roussey abc 7 news. jonathan: clear surveillance
