Why mosquitoes are swarming Michigan this summer
Mosquitoes, perhaps Michigan's most troublesome summertime annoyance, are having a banner year.
The swarms are "copious," said Edward Walker, a Michigan State University entomology and microbiology professor. "Biblical," said Walker's counterpart Howard Russell, another MSU entomologist.
Even Walker, known as the university's "mosquito guy," can't stand it.
"My wife and I went out to walk our dog last night and we had to come back in," he said. "The mosquitoes were just too much for us."
The heavy rainfall in late June is almost certainly to blame. Of the 65 Michigan mosquito species, those known as "summer floodwater" mosquitoes are thriving.
