As laundry experts, we scratched our heads over the new
Whirlpool WTW8127LC (available at Lowe's), which features an industry first innovation: an agitator pole (the pole in the middle of the drum of some top-loading washing machines) that’s, wait for it,
removable. Basically, this means consumers have two ways to wash their clothes, one way that's tough and rough, and another that's more common and gentle. In fact, the WTW8127LC is one of the best pole-agitator washers that we have ever lab tested, and it’s our highest-scoring pole agitator to date. Its more gentle wash option, called an impeller, did a less good, but still decent, job. We love the “What to Wash / How to Wash” system, which helps take the guesswork out of what a wash cycle does (although you can find this feature on other Whirlpools). The WTW8127LC’s pre-treat features is also a highlight. However, the WTW8127LC is expensive and exclusively available at Lowe’s. If you’re interested in a top-loader with similar features but that's just a pole agitator, check out the Maytag MVW7230HW. For an impeller with similar features, we like the Maytag MVW7232HW.
