Michigan is one of five states, along with Illinois, Nevada, New York, and Pennsylvania, that prohibit insurers from denying coverage due to the breed of dog. Dog owners, and especially dog advocates, rejoiced when insurers were banned from discriminating against certain breeds in Michigan in 2003. Akitas, Alaskan Malamutes, wolf breeds, Chow chows, Doberman pinschers, German shepherds, Great Danes, Pit bulls, Presa Canarios, Rottweilers, Siberian Huskies, and Staffordshire terriers are some of the most popular breeds blacklisted from homeowners insurance.
