monroe 64 is where you are starting off your day at 8:01 in one second. there we go. 8:01 exactly. vortex satellite and radar, skies have cleared out after early morning showers. we are sitting pretty. a mostly sunny day with a slime chance of showers well north of the city. an air quality alert goes into effect at 11:00 a.m. today. this is especially important for those of you who suffer from allergies for young kids and the elderly as well. difficult to breath with the high heat and high levels of o soap. here we go, to break down the day, 9:00 a.m., 82. that's what it feels like. by noon 86 feels like 88. mostly sunny. three this afternoon, 92 the high this afternoon. it will feel like 94. skies are mostly sunny. this evening, it will start getting more humid. we will talk about what you can expect as we make our way into the workweek coming up in the full forecast. >> vanessa, thank you. breaking news this morning, indonesian airliner flying through bad weather is now missing. transportation officials say they lost contact with the plane in indonesia about a half hour after take off. the twin turboprop is carrying five crew members. get more information. east harlem. police are searching for a man that escaped police custody while still in handcuffs. >> ilana gold joins us with more. >> police say they are looking for a suspect named austin stevenson. they tell us he escaped from the 23rd precinct this morning after he was arrested for trespassing. take a look at his picture. he is 25 years old. police tell us they arrested him last year on a burglary authorities have been looking for him since 3:00 this morning by 102nd and park and they haven't found him. officers say they had just taken the suspect out of the patrol car. he was in handcuffs and they were walking him up to the building but he got away and ran off. police say he is not a violent offender, neighbors have a lot of concerns. >> what are the questions that come up? >> why? how? what procedures weren't followed? things of that nature? >> you wonder how it happened? >> exactly. you worry about your safety, you live by this precinct. >> one block away. i do worry about my safety. it could be somebody more dangerous and he could be still dangerous. >> people are especially concerned because this is the third escape this summer. in july, arthur collins escaped from a different precinct in east harlem when he was in a holding cell. a month earlier tarek arnold escaped. both of the suspects were captured. back at the 23rd precinct, police are looking for an escaped prisoner named austin stevenson. if you see him, come forward. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. >> all right, thank you. new this morning, julian bond, an activist at the forefront of the 1960s civil rights movement died. he died in fort walton beach after battling an unspecified illness. he served as founding president of the law center in the 70s and chairman of the board for naacp for more than a decade. bond was 75. three people are dead after a multivehicle crash on the yorktown. police say just before 3:00 s.u.v. slammed into even embankment north of baldwin road and went airborne. other cars. one person was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. crash. a brooklyn family is in mourning after a 5-year-old apparently drown swimming in the rockaways. ezekiel gray was unconscious and unresponsive when a lifeguard pulled him out. lifeguards say there were strong rip currents but it's unclear if that was a factor in the boy's death. police are searching for four people after a stabbing at the union square subway station. it happened around 6:30 on a southbound nqr platform. witnesses say the attack appears to have involved a group of young people. >> looked like kids being kids and somebody instead of talking it out or settling with their fists which i guess is an arrestable offense, somebody pulled out a knife. >> the victim was taken to bellevue and is expected to be okay. crews from the national transportation safety board are trying to determine what caused a deadly plane crash in west caldwell, new jersey. shortly after taking off from the essex county airport yesterday morning the pilot of the single engine cessna told the control tower he was unable to maintain power. the new jersey man was trying to make it back to the runway but took a nosedive in the woods. >> as soon as it hit the ground it exploded then two more after that. >> the second you saw the explosion you knew what happened? no way anyone walks away from that. >> police say the pilot and flight instructor was the only one on board. no one on the ground was hurt. update on the legionnaires in the bronx, city health department added several more confirmed cases of people with the disease bringing the total to 124. but there have been no new confirmed cases since august 3rd. 94 of these people have been treated and released from the hospital. 12 have died. the health department says all the people that died were adults with preexisting medical conditions. police are desperately trying to identify this woman. they are asking for help. ems found her lying on the ground on 11th avenue near 43rd street in hell's kitchen wednesday night. she was taken to roosevelt hospital. workers told police she does not speak or respond to verbal prompts. she is believed to be in her 70s. a firefighter shot twice during a violent stand off on staten island is back home this morning. [ applause ] >> dozens of firefighters cheered as lieutenant james hayes left richmond university medical center yesterday afternoon. the 31 year veteran of the fdny and father of two is expected to make a full recovery. he was shot twice friday while responding to reports of smoke coming from a home where u.s. marshals were serving a warrant. >> nice to see him leave the hospital. >> coming up, about a half hour after today the twin turboprop was flying in bad weather. it's carrying 54 people, 49 passengers and five crew members. officials say the search will resume tomorrow morning. more breaking news just in. a small plane has crashed on bethpage long island, oyster bay road. nassau officials say the plane didn't hit anything. we don't know the condition of the person or people on board. the plane came down near l.i.r.r. tracks. because of that, service is suspended between hicksville and bethpage. buses are being called for passengers stuck on the train going east and west. we manslaughter charges in a deadly car crash from two years ago. police pulled him over friday for driving without a front license plate. when they ran his information, they found an open warrant for his arrest related to a 2013 crash that killed his 4-year- old son and the boy's mother. at the time police said he was driving and appeared to have suffered some kind of medical emergency. prosecutors haven't clarified why it took so long to charge him but he is due in court today. police say alcohol may have played a role in a boat crash that left three people stranded in new jersey. photo shows emergency crews rescuing two men and a woman. swan called 911 after the fishing boat hit a jetty. police arrested the boat's operator. he is charged with boating under the influence. happening today, a clam lovers dream on long island. the annual long island clam eating contest to raise money for south shore firehouses begins this afternoon. the funds will help firehouses damaged by superstorm sandy. the event takes place 1:00 at peter's clam bar in island park. >> sounds good. >> westchester nun lost her ability to talk but it's still -- but she is still speaking volumes. >> she hopes her prayers are answered when the pope comes to town next month. >> reporter: she may not be able to speak but 88-year-old sister noelle divine has no problem spelling out her mission. >> mary knoll is a house in ossining, new york. sister noelle who served for seven decades in hong kong and chicago returned her after being diagnosed with sclerosis. it is diminishing her ability to move and speak. remarkably, she can still write and communicates with an electronic tablets. she dead indicates her days helping sisters with dementia and alzheimer's. herself. years ago. she lost her ability to speak. she still makes drawings. >> because of herselfless service, the sisters have taken her plea to meet the pope to facebook. tens of thousands of people have seen it. the sisters are hoping the pope is one of them and reminding them that mary knoll is 30 miles outside the city. >> i would like very much to see noelle get to where she father. >> i would like to thank him for austin stevenson. this is from his arrest last year on robbery. we want to show you video of police searching the area for him by 102nd and park. authorities satisfy was arrested this morning for custody. surveillance video shows him running down the street in handcuffs and detectives chasing after him. a month later arthur collins escaped from another precinct in east harlem. he got out of a holding cell and both of those suspects were captured. police are looking for a suspect that escaped from the 23rd precinct this morning. if you see him, they are urging you to come forward. ilana gold, cbs 2 news. caught on camera, a florida mother apparently used her child to steal from a liquor store. it happened in pembroke park north of miami. you can see in the video the woman shows her daughter a bottle of tequila. >> later the girl grabs the bottle, walks it behind her back, side steps out of the store then runs to a car. police are looking for her mother. cbs 2 is demanding answers about confusing and potentially wrong road signs on a new jersey parkway. the signs cost tens of thousands when they were installed a little more than a year ago. meg baker explains the problem. >> reporter: a much needed project to repave the new jersey portion of the palisades parkway last year. a noticeably large number of road signs were installed at that time. some that are clearly misleading. >> approaching exit 1 southbound there is not one, not two but three different signs to alert drivers that the exit is a you turn but those three signs are completely wrong. as you see in this google maps 180 degrees. it should have indicated a forward. we went to the palisades parkway interstate park commission to demand answers. assistant superintendent says the same signs were used at each exhibit no matter the curve of the road. >> maybe exit one it doesn't apply but at other places it does make more of that full looping curve so exit 2 would be a better example where it does come down, make the full three-quarter degree revolution then out to the other adjoining roadway. >> but exit one does not. >> no. >> reporter: yet, there are three signs that indicate that is what the road does and it doesn't do that. >> you have to speak to the state diner why he chose that. >> reporter: state transportation officials who ran the project would not go on camera but say in response to your concerns, njdot will send out a crew to make sure the signs are correct. as for the price tag, some signs were replaced at a cost of approximately $92,000. >> if it's wrong, who pays for it. that are confusing. >> reporter: cbs 2 will continue to demand answers on why this happened and why the signs have not been fixed for more than a year. on the palisades parkway, meg baker, cbs 2 news. >> the entire palisades parkway project cost $11.2 million. a lot of parents are getting ready to send their kids off to college for the first time. what do you send them off with exactly? some of the largest expenses come in the form of computers, electronics and sports equipment. but some new popular items on student wish lists include debit cards for off campus restaurants, meal delivery and private gym memberships. college admission experts say some parents include laundry students to help students save time and focus on studying but others say that is the time to learn the skills. >> there are parents that pay for laundry service? why didn't i know that when i was in college.
