Highlighted by calls for unity and a declaration that a new american moment has arrived. How real is this tone of bipartisanship . We have complete coverage. Kristen welker up late. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Up late, indeed. President trump is waking up this morning after delivering the thirdlongest state of the Union Address in history, lasting 120 minutes. Mr. Trump had set out to strike a unified, optimistic tone, but there was hardline rhetoric that pleased his base. It was a historic moment for what he said and what he left out. After a tumultuous first year in office, President Trump trying to chart a new course. The state of our union is strong because our people are strong. Reporter using his first state of the union to emphasize national unity. This is our new american moment. Reporter touting his tax victory and gains in the economy. Since the election, we have created 2. 4 million new jobs. Reporter the president , known for speaking off the cuff, largely staying onscript, unveiling an ambitious agenda 15 trillion infrastructure package. I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, democrats and republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion and creed. Reporter at times, on immigrati immigration, the president portraying a country under siege. For decades, open borders have allowed drugs and gangs to pour into our most vulnerable communities. Reporter the president trying to repurpose the term dreamers, the 800,000 young undocumented immigrants brought her i here illegally as children. My duty and every duty of every official in this chamber, is to defend americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities and the right to the American Dream because americans are dreamers, too. Reporter drawing boos from democrats on his proposal to limit migration for families of immigrants who become u. S. Citizens. Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in unlimited numbers of distant relatives. Reporter that statement was called out by factcheckers, who noted that distant relatives cannot be sponsored for residency. The night took an emotional turn, when talking about the guests with the first family. Ot ot north koreas reckless pursuit of Nuclear Missiles could threaten our homeland. We are waging a campaign of maximum pressure, to prevent that from ever happening. Reporter the speech is just as notable for what the president didnt say. Democrats offering not one but five rebuttals to the president. Congressman joe kennedy, the grandson of bobby kennedy, delivering the partys official response. Bullies may land a punch. They may leave a mark. But they have never, not once, in the history of our united states, managed to match the strength and spirit of a People United in defense of their future. A contrast to female lawmakers who wore allblack in solidarity with the metoo movement. He broke with tradition, arriving to the capitol with her guests, instead of with her husband. The president bucking a white house trend, as well. Instead of hitting the road to sell his state of the union message, the president will stay in washington here today, and hold a series of meetings, including one on tax reform. Thank you so much. Lets bring in nbcs chuck todd. Good morning. Good morning. Or continuation. I feel like i saw you five minutes ago. Lets start where kristen just left off. The president doesnt have plans to take this message out on the road. How does he turn a successful state of the Union Address into something lasting . Well, i think its extraordinarily difficult for any president to make a state of the union stick anymore. The speed of our news cycle, the speed of all this. Im surprised this president the entire month of january, hes not been on the road much at all. And theyve not done much to sell their tax plan. If they havent done that, i dont expect him on the road for this. This state of the union only becomes relevant if something if he can have a big success quickly. And immigration is his one opportunity to have a big success quickly. I have to tell you, i think his rhetoric last night set things back, did not advance the ball forward. On immigration, while the tone was an attempt at bipartisanship, the way he sold immigration, really offended a lot of democrats in that room. And he made that situation harder today than it was before the speech. On the flip side of that, hes talking about a pathway to citizenship for the dreamers, the dreamer population of young immigrants. How does that sit with his base . I think thats the issue, savannah. We talked about this last night. I think because the amnesty issue doesnt sit well with the base, it, perhaps, the president was trying to sell the hard line aspects of what he wants to do first. He showcased immigrant crime, put an emotional period on that story. And then, said, hey, americans are dreamers, too, and then made his pitch for the amnesty for 1. 8 million dreamers. It was about appeasing his base a little bit. Check, go back to bed. Thank you very much. Also this morning, new concerns over the deadly flu epidemic. Reporter how do you protect children that are too young to get vaccinated . The centers for Disease Control says care givers should get the vaccine and frequently wash their hands. Reporter and so, ruby has had her flu shot at the pediatricians. Its her parents who have come in here this morning. Interestingly, athletes this weekend, began making their way to south korea for the olympics. The usoc has told them, when you get to the olympic village, it would be best if you not shake hands with other athletes because thats, of course, how such easy transmission of the flu virus happens. Its a little bit of a challenge since its all about meeting other athletes. Go to the fist bump. I was just thinking the fist bump. Now, what could be a Seismic Shift when it comes to health care. They have a chance to offer feedback to facebook before the app became available for the masses, and had been using it to chat with grandparents for the last few months. It isnt for everyone.
