They are planning a National Registration drive with elections coming up in november. Lets turn to chuck todd, moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning, as always. Lets start with the state of the shutdown. I think a lot of people are busy this weekend, theyre running around going about their lives. They want to know what the heck is going on, where we stand and whats the way out of this. I have a feeling if we dont open the government by end of close of business day tomorrow, we are going to be here for a while. The disagreement at this point about reopening the government has to do with the level of commitment there is to how to vote on a deal to protect the socalled d. R. E. A. M. Ers, okay . These are the folks that were brought to this country illegally by their parents, have known no other country, really, than america. Their protected status completely will expire in march. So thats what this is about. But its about how theyre even going to vote on the bill, right . Thats what theyre negotiating here. And i can tell you, i think a weekend shutdown, as you say, no one really notices it. Frankly the federal government barely feels the effect of it. But if we start to get through a business day, then at that point i think politically both sides start to almost get comfortable digging in because they figure, well, they jumped off the cliff, they might as well see if they can get something in return. So i think if we get through monday without resolution, we may be here a while. Mich mcconnell, President Trump, paul ryan have all said we want to get a spending deal done, but youre talking about daca, the d. R. E. A. M. Ers, which they feel is a separate issue. They say democrats torpedoed this thing by inserting the d. R. E. A. M. Ers agreement. Are they to blame by inserting another agreement . They are. But the democrats say we had a promise from the president in september that he was willing to do that. And democrats argue we gave you a continuing resolution from december to january. December was the original promise to get this deal done and then we postponed until january. So, you know, both sides believe theyre on the side of angels here when it comes to being honest about where things are, and if you look at it from their perspective, i see how theyre making that argument. By the way, willie, thats when shutdowns happen, when both sides believe that they can win this public debate. And thats where we are now, right . The republicans think they can make the democrats theyre more worried about Illegal Immigrants than American Military service members, so republicans really like that talking point, so theyre like, fine, lets get digging in. And i think democrats look at, mr. Art of the deal . Hes the one that was going to change this culture. Hes done nothing. Ultimately it is the president that has the most to lose here. Forget anyone else. The president was the one that was supposed to change african culture, right . He was the guy. Hes played a pretty passive role in this, and some could argue his evolution on this issue is the original cause of this dispute. That art of the deal was built theoretically for this moment, getting both sides together. Ill ask you quickly, chuck, in our remaining time here, the president s second year began and his first year began with massive protests in the streets. There will be more today of those womens marches. When he turns on the television and sees those people in the streets, how is he feeling about his presidency . I think he lives in his own feedback loop, so i think he feels better about it, really, than the rest of the country. We now have a majority of the country who dont just disapprove they strongly disapprove of him. The number one word in our poll used to describe the Trump Presidency a year ago was hopeful. Today its disgusted. So thats what hes staring at for the start of year two. Chuck todd, thank you very much. Well look for much more this morning on meet the press when chuck is joined by legislative Affairs Director mark short, senators tom kcotton and dick durbin. North and south korea showing some signs of easing tension ahead of the global spectacle on their peninsula. Today representatives from the north traveled to south korea to preview locations ahead of the game. Lester holt is reporting exclusively this week from inside north korea and he joins us now. Lester, good morning. Reporter willie, good morning. Its a sunday and a holiday here in north korea, so families have taken to the ski slopes. This is what i dont think a lot of people expect to see in north korea. Its a modern ski resort, big video monitor there playing patriotic tunes. We are here talking to people about the olympics, because this is one place we were told north and south korean athletes will train together. Facetoface talks are still working out some of the logistics of it, but there is cooperation and there will be participation in the olympics by north korean athletes. Weve been speaking to people here. Theyre very excited about the aspects of the two countries not only being together but talking together, and its certainly better than the uncertainty in the past year or so. This cooperation regarding the olympics, of course, doesnt change the real issue, the Nuclear Program here and the sanctions. What youre seeing here certainly flies in the face of a country thats undergoing crippling sanctions and that may be part of the reason that we were invited to come here and see this. But nonetheless, there is a sense of guarded optimism much like youre seeing in other parts of the world as the two countries are talking and beginning to show some signs of cooperation. Willie, well send it back to you now in new york. Lester holt inside north korea. Lester, thank you very much, and youll see lesters reporting throughout the week on nbc. Be sure to watch lester live from south korea tuesday on nightly news. Lets take a look at this storm system moving through the midwest. We have snow through denver and some delays likely through the airport there today. We have blizzard warnings in effect from colorado all the way up into southern minnesota, because not only are we going to see periods of heavy snow but winds could gust up to 50 miles per hour, so that will blow the snow around and reduce visibility, possibly causing blizzard conditions. Ahead of this storm, its all rain and we could see severe storms, too. Especially tomorrow, minneapolis could see delays as the snow moves through. Were looking at a widespread 4 good morning. Im first alert meteorologist krystal klei. Good luck to the eagles today. The temperatures going to be great for any tailgaters. The low 50s this afternoon. 52 in center city. 47 for the forecast high in allentown. We will see increasing cloud coverage. But just cloudiness. No rain expected during our daytime hours. Voorhees 52. Smyrna also at 52 degrees. Across the board, a mild, dry day. And thats your latest forecast. All right, dylan, thank you very much. Straight ahead, the highs and lows of the week, including the wild celebration when the lights finally came back on in one school in puerto rico nearly four months after the storm. And a nap that photobombed the speech on brexit. Well see if we can rouse the old chap. World wrestling entertainment is moving a new audience while keeping those head locks and body slams. Our first high is something that happened in many parts of puerto rico since the storm hit four months ago, and thats electricity. Schools have been operating in the dark. After four months without power, here was the reaction at one school . San juan when the lights finally came on this week. That is the school celebrating the end of 112 days without power. Children screaming, teachers ringing bells to welcome back the light. The Facebook Page went viral around the world this week. Progress has been painfully slow in puerto rico with an estimated 40 of the island still without power. A group of veterans volunteering a little bit later in the show. Probably the happiest those kids have been in school. Light. Simply light. Our first low goes to a pair of politicians who became internet stars this week for reasons having nothing to do with political policy. Ken clark is delivering a riveting 10minute speech having to do with brexit. Sitting behind him is sir Desmond Swain who supports both brexit and a good afternoon power nap. I wouldnt argue any of them at any length at all because i address some of them in Committee Without actually having very adequate response to any of them. Boy, hes deep, too, right . Really getting comfortable there on the handsome green leather bench. After a half hour of full snoozing, he did snap back into consciousness. Back here at home, a moment in the United States senate that anyone who wears glasses could immediately sympathize with. At a meeting of the Senate Judiciary committee, senator orrin hatch reached up to remove a pair of imaginary glasses, and the web couldnt get enough of it. Senator hatchs office responded to the questions about his phantom specs, oh, you mean the invisible glasses . Theyre new. I tried to adjust my contact before and bumped into my glasses. Weve all been there. Something youve never seen in a sporting event. It happened last sunday between the new Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings. After the saints kicked a field goal that appeared to give them a win and a spot in the nfc championship game, the vikings had one last play. Case keenum threw a pass to stefan diggs, before sprinting timelessly to the end zone before time expired. You saw the fans going nuts inside the stadium, but what about the vikings fans watching at home, in bars, or even on a different screen at a different sporting event . Oh, my god oh, my god whoo whoo that little girl was watching at a basketball game and watching that on the big screen. I hope that pool wasnt in minnesota. I was thinking the same thing. Must have been a california fan. The vikings play this evening for a trip to the super bowl which, by the way, would be played back at that stadium in minneapolis. Our final low goes to a moment in Live Television when your local Weather Report turns into a reboot of Alfred Hitchcocks movie the birds. It happened on fox 2 in the San Francisco bay area. We actually have some sunshine in other parts of the bay area, down toward san jose, but still some stubborn overcast here in the city. Look at this. Hes totally checking out the camera, mark. Oh, my gosh. That is so cool. Aiits a crow. I might need a little more time for this weather segment because we have a visitor. Its like a science show. Its just what you want to watch.
