Raindrops ha raindrops are freezing on contact. The purple may be a mixture of freezing rain and sleet. Its less dangerous that the pim pink freezing rain. You can see there are patches here in new jersey making it not a solid thing. Its not continuous and some of this is not even reaching the ground. But it is, all through the philadelphia area, and points to the north and west, in philly, this is all freezing rain, an icy mix, maple glenn and norristown, all freezing rain just to the north. It is snow and it would be the best thing because you can deal with an inch of snow. And to the west now, its changed over to snow. Again, farther to the north and west, we dont really have any problem. Here we are in new jersey and were getting some icing in mercer county, too. The wider view shows that this is a fairly narrow area. Its not going to last all night. The temperatures, of course, are critical. And even in philadelphia, we have temperatures below the 30degree mark. And with the freezing cold that weve had recently, even a 32 or 33degree temperature would cause problems and steve will tell you more about that. Thats right, glenn. Your car may show 33 or 34 degrees but the surface temperature may be colder than that. So dont just trust your car thermometer. Do not brake suddenly on the roadways. This is a live look at Philadelphia International airport. Flight travel has been slowing down and this camera is up in the Lehigh Valley where it was snowing just an hour ago. Now it has come to an end. This is good news for the Lehigh Valley where a lot of this is coming to an end. Now, even in reading, its iced over. Notice in the Lehigh Valley, its coming to an end as we walk through 4 00 to 5 00. Notice what happens in and around philadelphia. You can see the pink colors and thats the concern. Thats freezing drizzle. Its not coming down in a lot but notice how we dont push that band away. Even and around the city, central and southern new jersey, the concern is several more hours of icing through 7 00 or 8 00 before pushing that band down to the south. In the next half hour, well break it down for you hour by hour. This is a live look at allentown from our camera at the pbl center. Icy mix across our region, not dealing with snow here. Its ice. Its the most dangerous. Nbc 10 Steven Fisher is in allentown for us. Lehigh valley is one of the first places to get hit with all of this . Reporter yeah, jim, we were one of the first to see the freezing rain. The snow has just tapered off just ahead of that afternoon commute, which has just begun. This is lehigh street. Take a look at the roads that you can see in the median. Theres a lot of snow coverage. People are driving on the lanes and you can see some blacktop so its not frozen over yet but its going to be a slick ride for drivers here. In allentown, a concerning mixture that could lead to a slick commute. For me, its the ice. I dont like driving in it. It would be one thing if it were snowing. Reporter Chris Hendricks and others took refuge inside the queen city diner. Chris doesnt look prepared for todays weather wearing shorts and sneakers. Its sort of invigorating. Reporter but he says his car is. I have a big fourwheel drive and i wont push the issue. I know its ice, not snow. Reporter some had to go out in the bad weather. How are people preparing for the worst. Reporter jacqueline and jim, what they are seeing in northeast philly is just a light rain. This started about an hour or so ago. Its been off and on since then. Were at sally street and you can see people out this afternoon. We have been seeing people heading home. Some folks got to go home early today and others are out doin r doing er rands. We heard it was coming early this morning so we might as well get everything while we can. The lines are really big already, you know. Reporter today were heading home. We didnt have too far to go, which is a good thing. When it snowed last week because of the cold temperatures, its stuck around. You can see that all along the sides of the cars back there. All of that is just going to ice over, which could make it a lot more difficult to get out of places like this later. Live in northeast philadelphia, im lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. And first alert traffic reporter Jessica Boynton is watching the roads to try to beat this mess. How does it look out there, jess . As you said, everyone is leaving earlier to get out so we just have traffic earlier. Southbound 295, blue route southbound, right over here its seeing red. On the northbound side, you can see the huge delay approaching the scene there. Were seeing some delays on the southbound side and northbound as you move towards northeast philly. 24th street, eastbound moving towards 95, its actually not moving at all. Thats a pretty good way to describe it. Over here, westbound delays but thats because the expressway is slow in both directions. Were already seeing really big drive times for the eastbound side especially. 40 minutes into the red. Thats rather for this time. 19 miles per hour. You want to leave extra time before you head out the door right now. Good information. All right, jessica. Nbc 10s tim furlong is live for us. Any icy conditions where you are right now . Im getting on to route 141 in north wilmington. You can see that the road doesnt look too bad. The side streets are not doing well. We have the cold and slush and its all refrozen and theres a sheet of ice now on the ground and i was walking up my driveway and it looked wet but i almost busted my butt because i felts my feet come out from under me. And im going pretty slow. People are flying right by me here. Every now and then, especially when you go anywhere near a side street, you feel a shimmy. So were going to be careful. He was killed in the line of duty on saturday. Cydney long has more on the story. Reporter the collapsed shelf this row home remains a crime scene. Its been more than 48 hours since fire lieutenant mattc laterno became trapped and took hi h his life. He was loving and caring. Reporter he said on thursday he jokingly asked for a loan. I said ive got this big check right here if you can get somebody to cash it. He laughed and turned away and 30 hours away i was at temple hospital. Reporter state representative remembers laterno being larger than life. Hes a really tall guy and so for children, hes this big guy but he was very friendly and always smiling. Reporter she says his station was one of love and absolute passion. It definitely was his passion. He was very much in love with his job as a fireman. Reporter butler says laterno loved that they gave his shop credibility, posting this video of a 2016 fire fight. They put the slogan on their tshirts and materials and live by it. Reporter we asked about the possibility that the family here relied on a space heater to keep warm the night before the fire and could the weight of snow on the roof have caused the collapse but, so far, there are no solid answers. I dont know how much snow was built up. I dont even know where the collapse was, whether the roof collapsed or floors collapsed. Reporter mark says multiple agencies were involved and finding out what the cause was could take as long as a year. From north philadelphia, cydney long, nbc 10 news. In west philadelphia, firefighters say one person died in a house fire even though they were on the scene within three minutes of getting the call. The fire started early this morning on north holly street. Investigators are working to find out how it started. Heres a look at some of the other news making headlines at 4 00. Nbc news has learned the president s legal team is talking about the fbi about a possible interview with president trump. Its related to the ongoing russia investigation. Its unclear if donald trump would be interviewed directly by special Counsel Robert Mueller or someone else on his team. The president s team is also discussing the format of the interview and whether the president has to take part in an interview at all. Meantime, nearly 200,000 immigrants from el salvador living in the u. S. Must leave the country by 2019. Homeland security confirmed that the Trump Administration is ending a program that protected their temporary status. The program provided humanitarian relieve for foreigners whose countries are hit with natural disasters. Many have been living here as a result of an earthquake in 2001. The deal is done. They posed for pictures and signed autographs rallying the crowd for the birds playoff run. Going now to our first alert weather, this is city avenue. The dangerous ice can really make a mess on untreated surfaces and you can see how slick it is. That is not just water, thats ice out there. So careful when the ground is as cold as it is. That has likely been treated already. Part of the danger is, you dont know what youre dealing with just by looking at it because you cant tell whether its just wet or frozen over. Glenn hurricane schwartz is back and we see it behind you there, glenn. Theres a mixture, right . Yeah. And the largest area of precipitation is the most dangerous. Its the pink area that is freezing rain. And, of course, this will get more difficult once the sun goes down and makes it even harder to see whats ahead but there is tremendous improvement here in the Lehigh Valley where the precipitation at least for now has ended farther towards the southeast towards the shore it hasnt even started yet. But in this area, in this zone, its i95 corridor, as we call it, and theres a lot of freezing rain falling and, again, this is side roads, bridges, overpasses, your sidewalks, your driveways. Even your car windshield may be getting some icing while the main road ahead of you is okay because its been treated. Well, here in philadelphia, we are full of freezing rain. Theres a little bit of a mixture up in abington and norristown. Its all freezing rain. Farther to the north, the at moth fe moss fear is colder so you get more sleet. This white area is snow. And just on the Northern Edge of that, to the west, we have the same issue. We have freezing rain, sleet, snow. So having the light snow, west chester is still in the icy mix. We are drying out. Even in the clear for the mouth, shanksville. And in mercer county, there is a wintry mix. Were looking back to the west and we see this area in West Virginia that is riding to the east and that presents what is on top of us for moving out. I dont think this will clear the coast in the next couple of hours. Its 32 in philadelphia. Remember, thats an air temperature. To ground, its below that, im sure. But Atlantic City and rehoboth, those temperatures are high enough so theres hardly any icing. North and west well get more specific in these areas and chester county, 26. You know what happens when it gets dark and its still damp. Rain is still coming down and youve got temperatures like this. 28 in war enton and in delaware, we still have issues. Especially northern portions of delaware. Newark, harmony hills, all at 30. The farther south you go, icy issues farther to the south. And it hangs in there farther to the south its just rain because the temperatures are higher. By 8 30, the rain is trying to come up but, remember, we still have that issue with the ground temperatures and, finally, later this evening, towards midnight, things finally start to improve significantly. The area is pink is freezing rain and thats the most dangerous type of precipitation. Theres just raindrops that freeze upon contact with the surface. It could be the road or your car or the sidewalk or driveway but unless its an overpass or bridge, you can sometimes run into trouble. Now, weve had an improvement here from north to south. You can see that generally trying to end from north to south. But back here to the west, over the last half hour or so, its kind of stopped its progress. Its going to hang around for a while. This is a narrow area. Not everybody is affected by it. Almost all of philadelphia and northern and New Castle County and across the river in camden, gloucester county, northern burlington county, northampton, middletown and salem, possibly sleet and snow is in the area in white but a little bit of snow is not really a problem at all, not after what weve been through. And in new jersey, in mercer county, hopewell, ewing, lawrence, all in that area that includes the sleet. The temperatures are below not only freezing but some of these areas, Chestnut Hill are going to have the most problems as we go through the next few hours, especially as the sun sets and meteorologist steve sosna will tell you more about that.
