You can find all of that information at the bottom of your screen or on the nbc 10 app. Nbc 10 first alert meteorologist bill henley is tracking this wintry mix that is on the way. Bill . Erin, the entire area is in for this wintry mix that will have icy roadways from now until midnight tonight. Most of the activity will be falling during the afternoon. We will see a mixture of light snow, light sleet, and light freezing rain. But when it comes to freezing rain, it doesnt take much to make for an icy glaze across the region and lead to some very slippery conditions. Now, untreated roads, driveways, and sidewalks will all be at risk. So far, pretty quiet in philadelphia. You can see a little bit of sunshine making it through the clouds. The temperatures have been climbing, and thats part of why this one is going to be more difficult to track into our area. Its not going to be all snow like the last few systems that have come through. Right now, its just cloudy in philadelphia, abington, Washington Township and evesham township. But look to the west, you can see the snow is on our doorstep and extends through pennsylvania. But a closer look reveals the warming in the atmosphere thats actually changing the snow over to a combination of sleet and freezing rain. The warmer the atmosphere gets, the more likely well see that sleet and freezing rain come into the philadelphia area. If it gets warm enough, it will change over to all plain rain. But i dont think thats in store for most of our area. Some spots will get that and ill show you it progresses as the day goes on. This is 1 00 this afternoon. You can see some snow off to the north and west. We may see a mix of some sleet and snow in reading and allentown during the very early afternoon hours. Then between 1 00 and 3 00, that wet weather spreads to the south and east, moves into northern delaware. And you can see it in some of the suburbs, Chester County, and just barely into montgomery and bucks county. Thats 3 00 in the afternoon. So still pretty quiet in philadelphia. But watch how that changes can as we go into the Late Afternoon hours and the evening commute. That area expands, this is the area of sleet and freezing rain, so those untreated surfaces will be getting an icy coating from the suburbs through philadelphia, wilmington, even northeast philadelphia, and into south jersey. And then, as it pushes to the south and east during the evening hours, well see it change over to rain. Thats as the warmer air takes over, youll see a mix of that in delaware and south jersey and eventually at the shore. But the ice, thats the big threat. Ill take a look at how much ice you can expect in your neighborhood when im back in a few minutes. All right, bill, thank. Reporter well, right now its just cold, but dry. But the entire area, the Lehigh Valley area is under a Winter Weather advisory. That starts at 1 00 p. M. And is expected to last until 9 00 tonight. Just across the street here is penndot in allentown. They are getting ready, even pretreating some roads for what they expect to be a very busy day. As we heard bill say, a wintry mix is coming. Expected to start in just a few hours here in allentown. Were talking freezing rain, sleet, snow. Its all possible. Because of that, officials are warning drivers to be careful. Ice could form easily here. Right now, the temperature still below the freezing mark. And people out here told me, they are using their time wisely by getting out and running some errands. Trying to get some things done ahead of this Winter Weather. Now, right now, again, the roads, they are fine, just cold. But stay with us throughout the day. Preparations are underway even though all is dry right here for the moment, those preparations happening throughout the area. We saw plow trucks driving around this morning, but they werent laying down anything just yet. Area schools also preparing for this wintry mix thats coming ahead. The boyer town School District has released middle and High School Students at noon. The Elementary Students will go home, as well. O j roberts School District in nearby chester will be dismissing secondary School Students, starting at 10 15. And Elementary Students at 12 15. And here in pottstown, there will be a onehour early dismissal thats underway. Youre taking a live look at the roads here. Again, things are looking fine right now. Everything is dry, but a lot of people making their preparations ahead of this wintry mix. Reporting live in potstown, im Pamela Osborn, nbc 10 news. The weather will also have an impact later this afternoon on philadelphia. Youre looking live at eighth and market street. Sidewalks and streets could get very slippery this afternoon. Nbc 10s lauren mayk continues our Team Coverage live from roxborough. Lauren, youre at an already treacherous spot that could get a lot worse with the weather moving in today. Tell us about it. Reporter yeah, vai and erin. We actually have a van stuck right behind us. If you take a look over there, this is a sheet of ice on this corner. We are at lauriston and ridge. Thats a main road here. Theyve put some cardboard under that truck to try to give it some traction. We contacted the Water Department about what happened here, they tell us its an 8inch main that has been leaking and thats where all of this water has come from. Its just a froze sheen sheet o. When we arrived here, there was another car stuck in this ice. Well show you some video from that, from this morning. She tells me she was coming back from the gym, lives at the top of the hill, and shes from iowa, so she figured shes pretty good at navigating this, but the ice was just too thick. Take a listen. I was driving up the road and then my tire got stuck, so i tried to back up into ridge, but then i got stuck in this ice path and im worried if i go back any further, im going to hit the house or go back into ridge. Reporter and take a look at what is out here right now. Thats cat litter youre seeing on top of this ice. She said a neighbor came by, put that out there to try to help her out and several people tried to push her out but that just didnt work and then she called aaa. Again, we contacted the Water Department about what has been happening here. They tell us they are going to be sending out a salt truck. So not just cat litter anymore until they can get the repairs made. It is not clear, though, when that will happen. Live in roxborough, im lauren mayk, nbc 10 news. Well, we already know that Winter Weather has affected mass transit, really all morning long. Lets get a check on the roads and mass transit with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter, katy zachary. What are you seeing out there . As lauren showed us, there was that water main break. Mass transit has been affected throughout the morning. Yes, by water main breaks in particular, septas broad street line. Travelers on that were affected. And weve had some water main breaks throughout the area. Philadelphia Water Department, no doubt, will be busy following up with all of these breaks. Lets take a live look outside. This is 95 right at route 1, north and southbound. This is what we like to see, we like to see the roads clear. Maybe they have some salt on them and maybe some pretreating, but theyre free and clear of any snow and ice. At least from this picture. So thats what were really watching out for, as were headed into this wintry mix. Areas like you saw in laurens live shot, that still have residual ice and snow on them and that it could be further compounded with the Winter Weather thats coming in. Taking a live look outside in cherry hill, this is 295 right at route 70. Were similar. The majors are looking pretty good in our area right now, and ill keep a close eye on all of them, of course, as this system moves through. 95, 76, and 476, this is really the best these three majors in pennsylvania have been looking for hours. In the midmorning, we were having some trouble with them. And really just because of volume, a few disabled vehicles, things like that. When i see you in a bit, well take a closer look at mass transit, a number of trains on septa lines are running on delays right now because of this Winter Weather and the impact its had on the lines there. Nbc 10 on the scene this morning. This is at 53rd and race. You can see water overflowing from the basement of a vacant building. And that water left an icy trail to udel street. Streets will be a big concern as this storm moves. Thats why we have Ayana Williams with pendot on the phone. Whats being done to prepare the roads right now . Good morning. As of this morning, weve utilized more than 350 trucks for this icing event. And crews will begin deploying shortly after we see the first precipitation start to come down, the crews will be out deploying and they will begin spreading salt very shortly. Ayana, did you say how many trucks, exactly, you had employed . More than 350 trucks well be using. So more than enough coverage to get the salt out there on the roads to combat the icy conditions were facing. So is this a situation where you dont use brine because of the kind of precipitation it is . So its just salt . Correct. So because the road temperatures are so cold, we actually did not pretreat this time around. But there actually is enough materials on the ground already from the previous snowstorms that weve had, so there is you know, there are some materials and materials actually on the road already, but we did not pretreat for this particular icing event. And what do you want drivers to know, especially if they encounter one of your trucks. So, especially when encountering our trucks, give a following distance of six car lengths behind tis the safest distance to be. Dont try to pass the trucks too close. You want to give them the space they need to put the salt on the road. Just give yourself enough time to be able to stop. Its going to be really icy. Definitely watch your speed. Be very slow and plan accordingly. You know, if your wipers are on, your headlines should be on. And as always, wear your seat belt and buckle up. Thank you very much, ayana. Appreciate it. Thank you. Im meteorologist bill henley. Watching for this first snowflakes in the pocono mountains. The clouds are starting to produce a little snow. Its just falling into drier air, so the first snowflakes are vae evaporating before they make it to the slopes. But they will be on the way. We could see an inch of snow from this light system thats moving through the area. You can see scranton showing some snow on the radar and its just starting to move into the Lehigh Valley. It show sos some snow overhead more importantly, the freezing rain and the sleet combination that is just starting to inch into western berks county. You can see pine grove is getting a little bit of that. Weve seen a few reports from the harrisburg area of some sleet so far. As it moves into our area, the temperatures are also trying to move up. So far, were stuck in the 20s. But it is now up to 28 degrees in northeast philadelphia. Thats almost 10 degrees warmer than it got all day yesterday. And i do expect much of the area to see temperatures climb above freezing. In fact, were right at freezing already in wildwood and Atlantic City. So its warming up a little bit ahead of schedule. So things may not be so bad in the shore communities, as they will be inland, because even though were getting warmer air temperatures, its the ground that is still frozen. And that is going to make for an icy situation this afternoon. Were getting into the nice winds ahead of the wet weather and thats bringing in the warmer air, leading to the warmup today. But you can see for philadelphia, the temperature peaks right below freezing during the afternoon. This is when well have that wet weather moving in. The wintry mix with some sleet and freezing rain. This is the time of greatest risk for that icing. But as we go into the late evening hours, the wet weather comes to an end, and the temperatures bump up above freezing. Now, if youre out and about, there could still be a little bit of wind and it will feel like its in the 20s. But the temperatures wont go enough above freezing to warm up that cold ground. Still expect its going to stay frozen in most neighborhoods. So the potential for ice this afternoon. At 2 00 this afternoon, you can see a thin layer of ice moving into Chester County and just approaching northern New Castle County in delaware. Then by this afternoon, during the evening commute, you can see the very light precipitation. Were not talking about much. Just a glaze of ice, spreading across the area. And by 11 00 tonight, its out of here, but by then, this is the area that will likely see the most out of this system. And thats where were going to see this slipping and sliding during the afternoon and evening commutes. So the Lehigh Valley, between 1 00 and 2 00, a little bit of snow and sleet moving in. Very light to start with. The suburbs between 2 and 3. There may be snow mixing in while closer to the city its going to be more of a wintry mix. And between 3 00 and 8 00 this afternoon and this evening, philadelphia will see that sleet and freezing rain mix. And into the suburbs in pennsylvania and new jersey, as well. Include wilmington and trenton in that time frame. And then 5 00 to midnight tonight, farther south and east, the freezing rain will change over just plain rain, thats what were going to see at the jersey shore and farther into delaware, as well. And wilmington firefighters sent us these photos of an icy rescue from the brandywine river. The dog got stuck and the owner tried to save it on his own. Firefighters pulled the man out of the water quickly. It took longer to get the dog, because it was so scared. But eventually was pulled to safety, as well.
