i-95 in wilmington. fia isrst alracking the conditis in your neighborhood. again, steve, we're not going to get swamped by this snow. >> right. >> but it really doesn't factor in well with the cold temperatures we've had all week long. >> yeah, normally this would be deal.ettable snow, a coating to but the problem with this one is we've had such cold ground temperatures. so anything that falls will immediately stick if not treated. and even the treated surfaces when you get below 20 degrees, the chemicals don't work as effectively. so really your tires need some kind of traction especially when the snow compacts and turns into ice. this is a live look at i-95 in south philadelphia where it is snowing if you look closely in the street lights there. snow now falling in philadelphia. here is your first alert. we have the entire viewing area in it. and it's through tuesday. you may ask why it's not going to snow through tuesday. round one is the snow for today. round two is the bitter cold that comes in here later tonight through tuesday. and that's the one i'm really concerned about. but even this with the slippery surfaces, once that snow falls and fit turns into ice, it's not going to melt any time soon. so it will be around for a long time. so those back streets, you know, roxborough, manayunk, places like that will be a real mess. we have light snow moving into philadelphia, western suburbs right now. we have several more hours of it to go. again, it's not going to come down at a heavy clip and may not be plowable in spots, but the problem is it will be slippery. with temperatures like this 19 in blue bell at the moment, 16 in coatesville, 9this snow is a very powdery, fluffy snow out there. let's walk you through the planner. by 7:00, 13, 15 is what it feels like at lunchtime. snow wrapped up by 6:00 in philadelphia. the suburbs your snow is mainly this morning. lehigh valley mainly a morning event and then cold. and as we walk you through the delaware and jersey shore temperatures in the teens with more snow. another weather update in just a bit. and take a look, this is video of the first snowflakes falling in upper darby, delaware county. right now we've got snow in the suburbs west of philadelphia, down the shore and in delaware. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live for us in upper darby where that snow's starting to pick up, randy. >> reporter: yeah, it's really starting to creep in. it started snowing and flurrying about 30 minutes ago here in upper darby. as steve was mentioning it's going to be a good day for the brush. it's a dry powdery snow to dust off your car later today. let's look at the roads. not much traffic out this early but you can see the flurries coming down and it's going to start to stick on the roads because of just how cold it is out here. it has been a pretty busy december all things included for road crews. penndot says they have a big stockpile of salt, 100,000 tons to last through the winter. highways will be their big focus today. penndot says they'll have a fleet of workers out, but it's unlikely they'll need to put down the blades. not really enough snow todefini slick spots and some trouble for drivers. >> we've had a lot of these like, you know, nuisance storms, if you will, these clipper systems that seem to hit. certainly our crews are, you know, i guess kind of i don't know if you want to call this a warmup before a potential big storm but certainly our crews are getting acclimated to the early winter season. and kind of getting good work in, i guess you could say, before perhaps a big one might hit. >> reporter: so it is now snowing here in delaware county. are county oving west to east so first, we're already seeing some flakes in delaware. and then that will begin traps si transitioning over the next few hours into philadelphia and new jersey. for now live in upper darby, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10. the bitter cold will make it of the big events happening this weekend from the eagles to the fireworks and the mummers parade, you'll definitely need a game plan to stay warm. yeah, lincoln financial field if doesn't have a retractable roof. so the deep freeze will be with us as the birds take on the cowboys. fans going to the game have been visiting the pro shop to layer up in style ahead of sunday's showdown. >> we brought a lot of gear. we got a big blanket. that we'll take to the game. we got a bunch of hats. gloves, scarves. >> last night over the blue cross riverrink on penn's landing families were bundled up by the fire when they weren't trying to stay warm skating.an' cold to see fireworks at penn's landing tomorrow night, don't worry. nbc10 will be broadcasting the gar house new year's eve display live at 6:00 and at midnight. the dangerous temperatures could force the philadelphia mummers to postpone the parade on new year's day. we get a decision on that a little bit later on today. to be clear, right now the annual and crews have been preparing for crowds. barricades are up along broad street. the stage is set at city the string band, the fancies, comics all rehearsing the routines. >> when it's 10 degrees and maximum of 19 with high winds, doesn't look too good. >> city and parade officials will make a decision at noon today. again, we'll bring that to you as soon as we have it. if the mummers parade on monday is postponed, it will be rescheduled for next saturday january 6th. hav the free nbc10 app downloaded to your smartphone. that way you can track each you neighborhood. you'll be able to use our live interactive radar. and you can sign up for our al. let's head now to delaware county. police in chester are searching for a killer. nbc10 was at eighth and lloyd streets last night where a man was shot inside a car. this by the way is the 29th murder in the city of chester just this year. philadelphia's about to finish 2017 with moren recent years. so far this year 314 people have been killed in the city. that's a 13% increase from this time last year. it's also the highest number of homicides since 2012. philadelphia police tell us violence related to the opioid crisis contributed to the increase in killings. in an effort to combat it the department says there will be nearly 400 new officers on the streets by next september. meanwhile, the number of shootings, rapes and gun robberies has gone down year over year. 6:07 right now. coming ake effect. erie, pennsylvania, has had more than five feet of snow since christmas eve. now another round of wintry weather is headed their way. we'll show you why we are lucky. plus, taking the plunge. some jersey shore polar bear ha because of the bitter cold. one brave group is bucking that trend. we'll explain. and fluffy snow comes down here. why is it so fluffy? it's so cold. temperatures are in the teens right now so anything that falls will be of snow today. no mix, no freezing rain, nothing like that. live radar network shows snow through montgomery county, now berks county, may, snowing in wilmington. we've been showing cameras there and will continue to all morning long. live look at radar right now. snow moving into south jersey through areas of gloucester, salem counties now, atlantic county into cape may county, we're seeing the snow come down here. again, it's so cold outside that anything that falls just like this it will stick to the ground. temperatures 9 in mt. pocono, this is actually a bit of a break to the severe cold because we'll see that severe cold pick up here by tonight. so we'll walk you through the day. that snow continues at 8:00 this morning through 10:00, lunchtime and then as we move through this afternoon we'll start to see it move on out of here and we'll finally begin to calm things down in terms of the snowfall. so today's conditions we will see temperatures in the mid to upper 20s with light snow throughout the day. i'll be back in just a few minutes with part two which is the cold blast, the mummers day parade forecast and the eagles game here in just a bit. we'll see you then. thanks, steve. 6:11 right now on this saturday. coming up, cashing in on so in many parts of the region, here s re in cape may, seeing flakes flying in delaware county. we've got cameras and crews across the region anup-tdate on throughout the newscast. now to some news involving china. china's denying reports it sold oil to north korea in violation of u.n. sanctions. now, that word from china comes after president trump said that he was unhappy the country had allowed oil to reach north korea. meantime, the president has not responded to reports that russia supplied fuel to north korea at least three times in recent hsent, during his working vacation yesterday he hosted members of the coast guard at his florida golf course. on thursday the president gave an impromptu interview to the "new york times." he's been busy. the russia investigation was a top issue. mr. trump denounced the probe but said he believes special counsel robert mueller would be fair. nbc's hallie jackson spoke to a friend of the president who joined for that time of the interview. >> have you ie of weeks, changn tone when it comes to special counsel russia investigation? >> i think he's always had a lot of respect for mueller as an individual. >> the russia investigation will be a top issue as we look ahead to 2018 on nbc10's "meet the press," the outlook for 2018. join moderator chuck todd tomorrow morning at 10:30 right here on nbc10. played the lottery recently? well, you should. giant megamillions jack popot w grow even larger in 2018. nobody hit the $306 million grand prize in last night's drawing. one ticket sold in florida matched five numbers but not the megaball number. if you played, you could still win some smaller cash prizes. here are those numbers, 4, 10, 18, 28, 62 and the megaball is 7. the next megamillions drawing on now. >> the powerball drawing is just before 11:00 tonight. we'll have those winning numbers for you right here on nbc10. let's head now to the jersey shore where polar bear plunges are b a lot of spots on new year's day, but margate, all this year because of the dangerous cold. atlantic city polar bear plunge is still a go for noon on new year's day despite the frigid forecast and 37 degree ocean. the event raises money for multiple sclerosis association of america. the atlantic city fire department tells us though t sh participate. >> anybody who have heart conditions, cardiac issues, we advise them please don't. people run up to their knees or waist and come out and then warm up. it's risky if you don't use your head. >> for those who will be participating, those who are healthy to participate, there will still be rescue swimmers and ems crews on standby in case of an emergency. and good morning to yoert m steve sosna. 6:18 saturday morning. this is a live look from the comcast center of the schuylkill just seeing snow beginning in philadelphia. again, watch out, this snow is falling and will instantly stick on any street or surface. the reason why it's just been you don't need me to tell you that. it's just been brutal. and it will only get worse after the snow departs. so we'll talk about first. snowing in philadelphia. snowing in montgomery county. snowing in berks county, chester county. even into delaware now. northern delaware, new castle county seeing the snow. and right down to the beaches in atlantic city, cape may, garden state parkway you're seeing snow at the moment. here's our snowfall forecast. today, anywhere between a coating and two inches, which normally is not a big deal around here, but normally it's usually about 30, 32 degrees when that happens. but when you have temperatures this cold, it will be very fluffy snow. but the problem is when cars start rolling over that, compacts the snow, melts it a little bit and turns into ice. that's why i'm concerned for our side streets, especially when the temperature free falls tonight down into the low teens. so you want to have a winter kit in your car just in case you slide off the roadway or get stranded, your car's not starting, you want to make sure you have a blanket, some kitty litter in the trunk, the kitty litter helps give your car tires some traction if it's complete ice out there. current temperatures right now at the moment 20 in philadelphia, 21 in the northeast. it's 19 in dovers 22 at the marina in atlantic city. so your forecast for today, this is a little break from the extreme cold. it comes at a price though. we have the light snow over here for today. mainly during the morning and midday hours philadelphia and suburbs, lehigh valley, mainly from this morning into this afternoon for south jersey, delaware and the jersey shore. so the snow will linger there the longest. this is what i was talking about. by tonight temperatures feeling like just within the past half hour. will they sit or start? what eagles coach doug pederson has to say about playing time for his starters during tomorrow's final regular season game against the cowboys. just when you thought it would be a quiet holiday weekend, no, we've got a lot going on here. good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." thanks for being with us. i'm rosemary connors. it's 6:30 on this saturday. the final weekend of 2017 is bringing us some snow and some more of those bitter cold temperatures. as you can see the snow arrived here in delaware. this is a live look at 95. those majors have been treated by the crews overnight to make sure they're not slick with this wintry weather. cape may is also seeing some snow right now. here is a snow covered beach avenue down the shore. the snow has made it into philadelphia as well. another live look at center city. this is along broad street from our kimmel center campus camera. meteorologist steve sosna iskin you live. and, steve, we should point out to our viewers this isn't going to be a blast, a swamp of this wintry weather. we're not going to get swamped withit,in undated with it, but the ground is so cold and that's the issue here. >> right. you won't be digging out of this for days, but it is of concern because of how cold it is. the schuylkill expressway looking northwest from the comcast center right now and we've been seeing that snow fall. and the problem is that snow will instantly stick with how cold it is and then when cars run over it, it compacts, melts a little bit and turns into ice. so sometimes these minor systems end up being worse than the bigger storms where everybody stays off the roadways. so just keep note of that as you're out and about here today, especially the secondary side roadways here. those neighborhood cul-de-sacs. so we're seeing the snow right now in chester county. the snow has been falling steadily there for the last hour or two. wilmington, you're seeing the snow as well. right into south jersey at the moment we're seeing the snow along the 42 freeway. we're seeing that in 55 south of the pitman moving towards vineland and seeing that all the way down to the shore points here this morning. so from summers point, atiay landing down to the cape may courthouse and west into new castle county we're seeing that snow falling. wilmington to newark all the way down and if you're taking the 95 corridor here, it will be wet for the most part. there could be some slippery spots in areas just because of how cold it's been. so these are the feels like temperatures right now. and they will not move much here for today. now, our snowfall forecast like i said not real impressive, but the problem is it's so cold this fluffy snow will be slippery especially on those secondary streets. i'll walk you through the bitter blast that's coming. round two, the dangerous cold here coming up in just a bit. >> thanks for that, steve. we send it over to nbc10's randy gyllenhaal who is live outside keeping an eye on the sky in upper darby, delaware county, and heeding steve's advice to put a hat on. randy. >> reporter: got the hat on. it's really snowing at this point so probably a good idea. it was flurrying about an hour, hour and a half ago. it's picked up now. and as steve has been forecasting all week long, the ground is just so frozen that the snow is immediately sticking. let's take a look here on west chester pike. you can see the snow already sticking to the ground. usually takes an hour or so to accumulate because the ground is so cold, it's happening a lot quicker. we also caught up with penndot. they've had a pretty busy december so far. they say they have more than enough salt ready to go. 100,000 tons for the entire winter. they do say that it's unlikely the plows will actually have their blades down today, not really enough snow to plow cht definitely enough to cause slick spots if you're driving this morning. >> whatever falls from the sky given the cold temperatures we expect to stick to the roadway right away. and for that reason we have 182 state trucks ready to deploy for this event. >> reporter: and out here in the parking lot at the wawa we're at we're seeing some snow already accumulating on the cars, so it's going to be a brush kind of day. maybe not a shovel for your sidewalks, but definitely dusting off the car once the snow stops and you head out latered to. for now, live in upper darby, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. our cold snap is keeping firefighters busy. fires break out across the region since the deep freeze started and since a lot of people started cranking up those heaters and space heaters. the severe chill can make the dangerous job of these first responders even more difficult. that includes this fire scene in philadelphia last night. a family in west oak lane praised the crews for responding very quickly to their burning home. similar scenes unfolded yesterday in westtown, chester county and portion of montgomery county. in every case firefighters say weather was an issue. >> it hampers operations. makes everybody work a little bit slower. we have frozen hose lines, frozen equipment. >> and all that freezing can cause slip and fall conditions for first responders. crews always bring salt to the scene to treat the ground. talk about another fire, new this morning one man is in the hospital following this house fire in philadelphia's feltonville neighborhood. crews responded to the scene here on rising sun avenue around 2 2:00 this morning. right now the homeowner is being treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters put down salt to help ice from forming from the water they were spraying. bitter cold in new york last night didn't stopped loved ones and neighbors from holding a vigil for the victims of the deadly apartment fire in the bronx. new york fire officials have released video taken inside this century old building. you can see the burned out hallways and stairwells where the flames moved very fast on thursday night. investigators now say a 3-year-old boy playing with the burners on a stove started the fire by accident. the family today. this morning, we're learning there will be fewer police force in atlantic city. it's all part of the new contract that was ratified yesterday by the police union in in a.c. the contract reduces surprises to the group trips and the pranks, of course. our producers pulled on us. >> we've had some fun, rosemary. those stories and more when we get started in just a bit here on "today." happy new year by the way. >> happy new year to you guys too. have a good 2018. we'll see you -- i'll see you tomorrora bit. >> yeah. bye, guys. 6:40 on your saturday morning. a snowy saturday morning across much of the area. already that snow has moved in that's why we have the first alert for the two-part series. first part will be a little bit of snow and then the second part will definitely be the cold. the entire viewing area under that first alert here from now all the way through tuesday at 8:00 in the morning. e expecting that one-two punch. the first punch being that coating to two inches of snow which doesn't seem like a lot but with the ground b instantly that's a problem out here. so especially as we get into overnight tonight when temperatures fall into the low teens, that salt is not effective on the roadways. dangerous sub zero temperatures feeling like by tuesday morning we'll finally start to pull out of that. but it will be a long stretch of very intense cold. live look at the poconos right now where it's snowing outside. i've been checking some of the penndot conditions on the roads and they are reporting that some of the roads are w up there along interstate 80. so be cautious out there in and around the delaware valley they're seeing road conditions just wet, but again, watch out for patchy ice sy spots. it's snowing on the northeast extension of the pennsylvania turnpike in montgomery county. it's snowing if you head out on 76 out towards the west here, snowing in chester, delaware counties right now and more snow to come here through the afternoon. then it's accumulation in erie, by the way, for the month is more than 100 inches. yeah, just be grateful we're on this side of the state. thousands of people in our region will be ringing in the new year on the slopes. nbc10 found skiers, snowboarders and tubers getting a head start yesterday at bear creek mountain in berks county. the frigid weather drove some indoors for warmth, maybe for hot cocoa. but many others really weren't bothered by the bitter blast. they're happy to see it. the slopes are guaranteed to be covered with man ahead or natural snow for the new year. >> i know last year as an example they didn't open until after the first of the year so when we heard all the chair lifts were running and most of the trails were open, we decided to make the trip up for the day. >> bear creek says all its trails are open. the resort expects those trails to be packed because all of its hotel rooms are booked this weekend. the flu season is only getting worse. that's the word from the
