saturday. thanks for being with us. goor good morning. this is "nbc10 news today." i'm rosemary connors. it's 5:30 and we are tracking snow and that deep freeze for your saturday. we've issued a first alert so that you're prepared for the changes to our weather. meteorologist steve sosna is keeping an eye on the timing of the snow. steve. >> that's right, rosemary. snow beginning in our western suburbs already in chester county, it's snowing up in the poconos, we're seeing the light snow. and, look, visibility has come down. i showed this to you a half hour ago. you can see a little further. the curtain of snow is lowering across the area. that's camelback. let's look at other spots in our area right now. this is a live look from the loew's hotel. you can s wind here, not a lot of wind at the moment but show you the radar because we are watching snow moving in from west to east across the area. here's a look at the radar over the last couple of hours. you can see it's a solid line of snow all the way up from the ome snow into chester hrough county. it's snowing steady now in chester county. and more snow off to the west. so this is about three, four, five more hours of snow western suburbs. and then the snow will move into jersey. and it will end around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. the problem with all of this is it's been so cold. so that snow will immediately especially to any untreated surface. so sidewalks, all of that will be very slippery throughout the day today. ur fllst alert, which is a cold blast coming up here in just a bit, rosemary. s> we'll see you we won't get slammed with the snowy weather as steve just told us, but because the ground is so cold whatever falls will stick. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal is live in delaware county watching roads there. >> reporter: and that cold could make a slippery morning for a lot ov drivers. we're starting to see the first flakes falling here in upper darby. see if the camera can pick it up on the traffic light here. just a couple flurries making their way to the ground. this will last for hours of course. we caught up with penndot earlier and they tell us about their plans for the roads today, they have a lot of salt ready to go. 100,000 tons for the entire winter. highways will be their big focus today. penndot says they're going to have a fleet of workers and contractors, but it's unlikely they'll actually needes dn on t. not enough snow to plow. definitely enough to cause some slick spots and trouble for drivers. >> whatever falls from the sky given the cold temperatures we expect to stick to the roadway right away. and for that reason we have 18 state trucks ready to deploy for this event. >> reporter: so sounds like it's going to be a brush day, not necessarily a shovel day because there won't be as much snow. as i mentioned we are starting to see a couple flurries fall, storm moving from west to east, to chester county before philadelphia and later new jersey. for now live in upper darby, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. thanks for that, randy. our frigid cold snap is keeping firefighters busy. we've seen a number of fires break out across the region since the deep freeze started and the severe chill can make the dangerous job of these first responders even more difficult. that includes this fire scene in in west oak lane night. praised crews for responding quickly to their burning home. similar scenesiest in chester county, burlington county and montgomery county. in every case firefighters say the weather was an issue. >> it hampers operations. makes everybody work a little bit slower. if we have frozen hose lines, frozen equipment. >> all that freezing can cause slip and fall conditions for first responders. in many cases crews bring salt to the scene to treat the ground. bitter cold in new york last night didn't stopped loved ones and neighbors from holding a memorial vigil for the victims of the deadly fire in the bronx. they comforted each other by lighting candles and saying prayers in memory of the 12 people who perished. new york fire officials released this video taken inside this century old building. you can see burned out hallways moved very quickly thursday night. investigators say a 3-year-old boy playing with the burners on a stove started the fire by accident. the flame then spread quickly through an open door. the apartment door to that structure where the boy lived was open and then it raced up a five-story stairwell. witnesses were horrified. >> every little kid is burned. it's crazy. >> we're learning that five of the 12 fire victims were children. the fire was new york's deadliest in more than a quarter century. new overnight, police arrested a suspect following a car chase from wilmington to south jersey. the two-state pursuit ended early this morning in clementon, camden county. authorities are expected to release more details later today. there will be fewer police officers on the force in atlantic city. it's all part of a new contract ratified yesterday by the police union in a.c. the contract reduces the number of officers but increase the number of hours the officers work over the course of the year. it also preserves salary and benefits changes that took effect earlier this week in march. coming savvyhave eard apple admitting it slowed down older phones, ahead you'll meet the high school student who got the company to fess up. plus, new year changes and new laws around our region that could save you some money in 2018. and good saturday morning to you. i'm first alert meteorologist steve sosna. we have a first alert on this saturday morning. and that first alert will continue all the way through tuesday. it's a one-two punch. punch one is some light snow. not snowing yet in philadelphia. this is a live look from our mellon camera and it looks very nice out there, very decorative outside withri t c still going on as we approach new year's, but it will not feel really nice out there later on tonight. we have the first alert for the entire viewing area. it lasts from now all the way through tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and as i mentioned it's a two-piece system. the first piece is that coating to two inches of snow creating slippery untreated roadways. and then part two is really what we're concerned about. it's that sub situation later tonight all the way through tuesday. so we had this earlier this week and now we're going to have it again here unfortunately this round may be worse than round one. so a live look at our radar net work right now where snow is starting to move into montgomery county now. snowing steadily in chester county. again, it's so cold it's been in the teens lately that anything that falls will stick almost immediately. now, i know a lot of thve been treating the main roads so they should be just wet. but there may be some isolated icy spots even there on the main roads just due to the pure temperature and how cold it is. light snow at 7:30 pushing from west to east, you see that here :0r suburbs from philadelphia moving across the river into new jersey. and as we head through the rest of the night and into the next couple of days we have to talk about this. and i'll do that coming up there at 5:48. this is your final weekend to see the nutcracker by the pennsylvania ballet. there are two shows today. and a final noon. the holiday favorite is playing at the academy of music on broad street in center city. 5:40 right now on this saturday. former president obama is looking for positive stories and cites eagles defensive end long. and the flyers give it a good effort, see if it was enough to win. it's all ahead in your saturday morning sports. almost a quarter to 6:00 right now on this saturday morning. here is a live look at 95 in wilmington. you can see if you take a look in the bottom left hand corner of your screen, you see that street light? you can just see those snowflakes, those flurries starti starting to fall there in wilmington. meteorologist steve sosna is tracking the snow that will be making its way across the region. we'll see him in just a few moments. he is the so-called high school student who took on apple and forced a tech giant to admit it intentionally was slowing down older iphones. 17-year-old tyler barney of tennessee took apart his own iphone and found apple software updates were slowing it down. his post on reddit went viral. the discovery prompted apple to admit it does slow down older models as they age. the discovery has turned into a lawsuit. >> it's about data this point our phones are becoming as fast as our computers, if not faster, and we need a power source to continue to provide for that. >> here's what apple says. apple says slowing down older iphones was necessary to avoid unexpected shutdowns related to battery fatigue. as a result of the discovery apple is cutting the price of a battery replacement. new laws take effect january 1st that will impact your salaries, shopping and personal information. nbc10's keith jones takes a look at those changes for us. >> reporter: what better p wall. in new jersey the minimum wage will bump 16 cents from $8.44 to $8.60. a little more cash to spend, the sales tax will also drop slightly to 6.62%. in delaware a reaction to recent major data breaches. >> it's like the guards at ft. knox forgot to lock the doors and failed to notice the thieves were emptying the vaults. >> reporter: in 2018 businesses in the first state that experience a breach will be required to notify affected residents within 60 days. if it affects more than 500 delawareans the company must also notify the state attorney general's office. also businesses will not be allowed to screen job applicants based on pay history and they also can't seek out how much they were paid. and in pennsylvania, how you identify yourself might change. the federal real id law scheduled to go into effect in october, but get your documents together now because upgrading your license for more security could take up to six months. so when it goes into effect, you'll most likely need to use a passport, military id or some other compliant card to enter federal buildings or board flights until of course you get your real id. jones, nbc10 news. you may be able to save some cash on the new year's eve bubbly this weekend. that's because the fine wine and good spirits store right on south fifth street in society hill is going out of business. the store is offering a 10% off sale on new year's eve. that's this sunday from noon to 6:00 and the store closes for good sunday evening at 8:00. thousands of people in our region will be ringing in the new year on the slopes. nbc10 found skiers, snowboarders and tubers getting a head start yesterday in berks county. the frigid weath sere people indoors for a little bit of warmth and cozy up by the fire to get some hot cocoa. many others didn't seem bothered by the wintry blast. the slopes are guaranteed to be covered with manmade or natural snow for new year's. >> i know last year as an example they didn't open until after the first of the year. so when we heard all the chair lifts were running and most of the trails were open, we decided to make the trip up for the day. >> bear creek says in fact all of its trails are open. the resort expects those trails to be packed since all hotel rooms are booked this weekend. yeah, a lot of people enjoying the cold weather out there. i am not one of them, but meteorologist steve sosna says that, yeah, if you love skiing, snow dl sn snowboarding, this is the weekend for you. >> if you have friends or relatives that like it and you have to go with them, sit inside the cabin and have some hot chocolate because it will be very cold outside and very brutal as well. if you're headed out and about right now center city philadelphia, few people out and about early on this saturday morning. not too much in the way of snowfall in philadelphia just yet, but it's gnat far west of you. and we've been seeing reports of light snow in chester county where it's snowing lightly in coatesville right now. it's 16 degrees. 17 in allentown. it's 17 in millville right at the moment. 17 in atlantic city. and down in rehoboth beach 23 at this hour. so there you go, you see the snow on the radar and it's moving into our northern and western suburbs, montgomery county seeing some of the first flakes there just west of norristown towards valley forge. and moving south into northern delaware we saw the snow on the wilmington camera here this morning. and it will continue to snow here for the next several hours. not expecting a lot of snow, but just enough to make things a slippery mess. that snow will continue here moving from west to east. so froze-adelphia is what we're calling it here as temperatures will not surpass the 32 degree mark for the foreseeable future. 25 yesterday, 28 today. down to 22 tomorrow. and then look what happens by the time we get into monday, just really rough stuff. 19 degrees, but feeling like zero to 5 most of the day. and tuesday 25 temperatures feels like mid to upper teens. and after what we just encountered this doesn't feel too bad. but look what happens overnight tonight. we see the arrival of the arctic r. by 11:00 tonight when you tune in, glen will be here with you, 1 is what it feels like in reading, 2 in allentown, 7 philadelphia and 8 in toms river. so single digit windchills. waking up i'll be here with you game. that 1:00 start feeling like 7, so just brutal stuff out there. any improvement for the foreseeable future here with that really painful stuff coming our way. so plan on light snow here for today at 28 degrees, a coating to two inches in many of our neighborhoods. 22 with that biting blast of cold on your sunday. eagles game of course going on. we have our new year's celebrations tomorrow evening, tomorrow night. if you're headed outside, you can do it but you n ee layers and try to find a spot where you can take a break inside and warm up your body. 19 on new year's day. the
