up for the weekend. the first is the snow, got a first alert out for that starting tomorrow morning. followed by brutal cold and that goes till tuesday 8:00 a.m. everything's cold all week. but some are colder than others and more dangerous than others. a coating to two inches of snow sticking on untreated surfaces. then the subzero wind chills that are coming in. just to give you an idea, it's 12 right now. by new year's morning it feels like five below. that's a 17 degree difference. 17 degrees colder than it is right now. imagine that. there's the snow on the radar. it's obviously moving in. it will not be with us this evening, it will be with us tomorrow morning. and it's a fairly large area, but it's not all that heavy. it's not going to last all day. we're talking, again, about a coating to two inches of snow. but it's that slippery type because of the cold roads, it's a flurry snow, it will be blowing around in the wind. we'll talk more about when the coldest of the cold is coming in a few minutes. not everybody loves this cold weather, but it's hot business at the ski resorts. today we sent steven fisher to the splolopes where skiers and snowboarders are loving the air. >> reporter: most people don't want to be outside when it's this cold. people here didn't seem to have a problem with it. they said you need two things, plenty of layers and hot chocolate. today was a day where you didn't want to forget your gloves. especially if you were strapping on the snowboards and taking a couple runs at bear creek. >> my fingers are getting a little cold. >> reporter: the sun made an effort to get through the clouds. >> sun wouldn't hurt because you can see better. but the lack of wind is a major plus. to me, this isn't that cold. >> reporter: justin jumped at the chance to ski here in december driving all the way up from rehobeth beach. >> last year, it didn't open until after the first of the year. when we heard all the chair lifts were running and most of the trails were open we decided to make the trip up. >> reporter: the key to surviving out here. >> got to wear layers. we have a couple of hand and toe warmers. >> reporter: some enjoy the freezing cold. >> i like skiing when it's cold. i put the mask and goggles on and i'm good to go. >> reporter: others felt more at home inside, next to the fire with some hot chocolate. >> i was out there an hour and a half. at that point i was like, it's time to come in and sit by the fire. >> reporter: the cold didn't keep people away today, but some told me when the when the wind chill gets to around zero it's too cold for skiing. penn d.o.t. is ready to roll. the timing of the storm should help the cause. >> it will be a saturday, less volume on the roadways which will allow our crews to be more effective and efficient. >> it's the calm before the storm in king of prussia. once the snow starts dropping, crews will watch the monitors to decide whether trucks should head to one place or another. delaware, getting ready for the snow. this afternoon crews loaded up the salt trucks in wilmington. officials don't expect a lot of accumulation, they say it's better to be safe than sorry. we've got the eagles game this weekend, new year's eve fireworks, and then there is the mummers parade. temperatures in the teens could affect how you celebrate. >> i think it's probably going to be a deterrent, the weather, definitely and how the instruments will play and things like that. >> the mummers will make a decision tomorrow on whether or not to postpone the parade because of the bitter wintry weather. of course, we'll bring that to you as soon as we learn about it. more proof of how frigid it is outside. this is the result of a water main break in south philadelphia. you can see the van partially incased in ice. this is near the corner of 32nd and reed streets. the water department is fixing the break. it did not impact any of the neighbors. you can track the snow in your to a developing story out of west philadelphia. >> we're awaiting charges for two people arrested after a home fire this morning. nearly 100 philadelphia firefighters battled flames at this home on chestnut street. the bitter cold added an extra layer of trouble for firefighters. water used to fight the flames quickly iced up the equipment. >> our gear weighs about 100 pounds. we had members in the back that were totally covered in ice. it's making it very tough. obviously, we have ladders up to the rooves, the rooves are basically a skating rink. we're trained in this but it's difficult for us to move around. >> one firefighter was taken to the hospital. no word on what started the fire. philadelphia police took two people into custody at the scene. officials said it was relate today the fire but didn't say how. today, we learned a child playing with a stove started that fire that killed 12 people last night in the bronx. it's one of new york city's deadliest fires in decades. chris pelon explains the inferno left little time for anybody to react. >> reporter: a dozen people are dead. and investigators say a young boy is to blame. >> we found this fire started in the kitchen on the first floor. it started from a young by, 3 1/2 years old playing with the burners on the stove. >> reporter: the fire broke out in a bronx apartment building thursday night. investigators say it spread quickly to other floors when the young boy's mother left her apartment door open as she escaped with her children. >> fire travels up, the stairway acted like a chimney. it took the fire so quickly upstairs that people had very little time to react. >> reporter: the flames forced dozens onto fire escapes and into the street. enduring brutal cold as firefighters tried to rescue them. >> we got people on the fire escape at the front of the building. >> reporter: joel rodriguez made it out alive. >> yanked the ac out the window, had my wife get out. >> reporter: 170 firefighters spent two hours battling the flames. the oldest victim, 56. the youngest, just eight months. >> there was a lot of people coming out in stretchers. >> reporter: excluding september 11th, it was the deadliest fire in new york city in more than 20 years. >> we have people who have lost their lives, lost their homes, lost everything. and we grieve with them. >> reporter: firefighters arrived three minutes after the first call for help. it was already too late for many victims of this fast moving fire. chris pelon, nbc news, new york. president trump believes the russia investigation is bad for america, but still he said he has no plans to interfere. in an interview with "the new york times", the president took shots at the investigation into russian election meddling saying quote, it makes the country look very bad and it puts the country in a very bad position, end quote. the president insisted he won't fire mueller, but critics caution that's not set in stone. >> his definition of fairly has evolved over time. he conditioned his support for the mueller probe on this fair treatment, which i think he will be the ultimate judge of. >> four people are facing charges in that investigation. all with ties to the trump campaign. philadelphia is set to finish the year with more homicide than it's had in five years. >> so far this year, 314 people have been killed in the city. that's a 13% increase from the same time last year. the highest number since 2012. police officials tell us that part of the reason is increased violence related to the opioid crisis. >> when a demand for something that's illegal is so high, people will often time take violent measures to control the distribution. >> the department will have 370 new police officers on the street in problem areas related to the opioid epidemic by september. the department hopes this will help to serve as a deterrent. the cape may county habitat for humanity says a disgusting crime has been committed against them. they' they're furious. the organization says it's been robbed. someone took $4,000 worth of power tools in the past week. habitat is asking anyone with information to call the middle township police department. plymouth township police are looking for a man wanted for fraud. he and another person had been cashing checks on a compromised account. they've stolen more than $100,000 from several people. we're learning joe biden will serve as the keynote speaker at the delaware commerce chamber dinner on january 8th. these freezing temperatures are especially brutal for public servants on the front lines. >> the cold weather is no help for first responders, firefighters putting in extra duty today. we'll tell you why they have to be extra careful in fighting fires like these. also ahead, going out of business. the liquor store closing its doors in the new year and the special deals it's cutting for customers. a frigid fare well to 2017 at the jersey shore as brutally cold air heat in miami. the high today is 82. it hurts me to say that. we're diving into weather woes for both cities right now. nbc 10's michael spears joins us live from sunny and warm miami. >> i mean, of course, you had to get that shot. i have to talk to ted. jersey shore bureau reporter ted greenburg is toughing it out in atlantic city. >> reporter: can we switch places? it hurts me to think about that. you really have to have your layers on this evening. the wind chill right now making it feel like it's about 12 degrees. you can see right there, not keeping everyone off the beach. family out there walking this evening. how about that oegcean water? it's 37 degrees. the first time this season it has dropped into the 30s. the surf should be getting colder. the annual polar bear plunge here in atlantic city, still on track. still going to be held on new year's day organizers say, despite the very cold forecast. tonight, people are definitely bundled up out here. but we have been seeing quite a few of them here on the boardwalk today. the tram is going to be going by on your screen. a good way to be traveling on the boardwalk tonight inside one of those trams. many more folks, no doubt, on the way to atlantic city new year's eve is the biggest night of the year here in ac. guys? >> for anybody who wants to come down and spend new year's eve in atlantic city or do the polar bear plunge on new year's day, any availability in terms of rooms? where can people stay? >> reporter: limited choices. i checked would the casinos, several of them, they're very buildings. plunge. >> studio, mike. >> reporter: yeah, no chance for that. you mentioned just the white shirt. i usually have an undershirt on because of the humidity. don't have to do that right now. it's gorgeous down here in miami. i don't want to rub it in too much, but i'm going to do it. we'll show you biscayne bay. they're getting ready for new year's. it's beautiful. much of the week in the 80s. the low humidity, it's really what us folks down here wait all year for to be able to come out here and not by drenched in sweat. this time of year is beautiful. especially when you're on social media and looking at what you're dealing with up north, it brings it home. there are a lot of folks who live in south florida who say this is chilly. for a lot of us who are transplants you try to soak it up when you can. >> too chilly? what? >> michael, yeah, we're hearing about this cold front that is going to be coming your way pretty soon. >> reporter: yes, and we say cold front early next week we expect temperatures to drop into the lower 70s. again for us here in south florida that's chilly. you can expect to see folks walking around in jackets. >> i feel terrible. my goodness. michael spears, live for us down in miami. we are going to live through you, thank you. now to your first alert forecast. get ready for snow. we go from miami heat to snow, guys. saturday morning through the afternoon, look at the system coming our way. we've issued a first alert that starts saturday of course and then continues on. looking live at manayunk. temperatures are in the 20s, but it feels like the teens. glenn told me it's heading towards >> digits. at least the feels like. >> oh, glenn. i'm going to let you be the bearer of bad news. >> i once lived in miami. >> i lived in florida, too. >> we get spoiled, don't you? it gets down to 50, you're cold. >> you're like, cranking the heat, oh, my goodness. >> i've never experienced that. >> similarly, people who are from like, canada think we're crazy for complaining about a zero degree wind chill. it's 50 below in central canada right now for wind chills. everything's relative. your bodies do adjust, especially if you dress properly. somebody tell ted to put a hat on next time? okay. it's already down to 18 in parts of our area now. and it's not even 6:00 at night. and this is not going to be the coldest night of the next week. that's for sure. it's down to 19 in delaware. 21 in greenville. 23 in odessa, middletown. further to the south, we've got numbers as high as 27 in georgetown. 29 in reading. 28 at bethany beach. warm spots. now, we look back to the west, we see that snow on the way. and it's a fairly impressive system. it's moving fast. that's why they call it a clipper. so it will move in fast, move out fast. but it's a solid area. that means it's a steady snow. there's no flurries, it's not a couple of snowshowers. it could start as early as 6:00 a.m. by 9:00 it's snowing just about everywhere and it's sticking on untreated surfaces like your driveway and your sidewalks. it may be ending first in delaware by about noon and then ending in the rest of the area by about 2:00 in the afternoon. it won't be snowing all day. maybe a couple of flurries in the afternoon. it accumulates a little bit. the computer models are showing us between a coating and a couple inches. also a little bit in ocean county closer to the ocean. then everybody gets reinforced with the cold air. so saturday morning, okay, it's cold. saturday afternoon, it's cold but not as cold as it's going to be. because look what happens on sunday. it's going down. by sunday morning, it's feeling like 3 in philadelphia. a little bit below zero north and west, 13 below mount pocono. sunday, middle of the eagles game, six. 1 in allentown, 1 in reading. 9 below in mount pocono. then sunday night, new year's eve. below zero in philly and allentown. by new year's morning when the mummers would be getting ready to go, this is the worst of it. 6 below in philadelphia. 21 below in mount pocono. during the day it does not warm up a whole lot. so it is just brutally cold on monday after the snow on saturday. and all of next week is cold, too. can no relief for people in erie speaking of the weather. more than a foot of snow is expected to fall this weekend. this comes from receiving 34 inches on christmas day. that's the most snow ever recorded in a single day. it's definitely a december to remember out on the other side of the state. >> i'm sure the news crews out there are punching in a lot of overtime. >> no this painfully cold arctic blast is relentless. nbc 10 was in center city a little bit earlier today where folks were running and shopping despite the subfreezing temperatures. now to a live look at the ben franklin bridge as folks head home for the new year's weekend, tomorrow the bridge could see a nice coating of snow. let's take a live look at i-95. wherever you go tonight, i don't have to repeat it, but i will. bundle up. temperatures will plummet to the teens. thanks for staying with us, i'm rosemary connors. >> i'm keith jones. we're following double trouble in the weather department. we're going to send it over to first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> when can we expect the first flakes to begin falling? chester county, berks county, western portions of newcastle county, delaware, may see the flakes by 5:00 a.m. and then the rest of the area should be snowing by, let's say, 8:00 in the morning. and then it's a steady snow, it's not just flurries here. this first alert is for the entire area. the one-two punch, the snow starting early saturday morning and then the worst of the frigid air ending by tuesday at 8:00 a.m. it's going to stay cold, but not as dangerously cold. subzero wind chills, even in philadelphia for this one. a coating to two inches on saturday. the temperature is even colder when you have a snow cover. we may very well have that. as you can see, nothing on the radar close by. but that's a nice large area of snow covering several states. that is moving in our direction. and there's no doubt that it is coming in. there it is. it's not like it's a close call here. it's just related to the timing, it's got a certain amount of potential. it's not capable of producing huge amounts of snow. it's not going to be wind dri n driven. it's not going to last all day, but it will last a good bit of the morning and maybe even into the early afternoon. more on the snow totals and just how cold it's going to get once that moves out, coming up. speaking of this weather, fire and ice, never a good combination. this cold weather is bringing both for street crews and firefighters. deanna durante is live in horsham where firefighters spent most of the day fighting a fire. >> reporter: you had firefighters battling this fire for more than three hours. this wasn't the only trouble spot we found today. jackhammers are used to dig to the root of the problem. icy covered streets in south philly, the result of an icy road. in montgomery county, firefighters used plenty of water to battle a two alarm house fire. crews from all over montgomery county lended a hand. and yes, the water froze here too. the fire broke out in the basement and clutter helpheed hl the flames. officials are taking a close look at the heating elements. >> people don't realize, but heating fires are the second leading cause of fire and deaths in homes in the united states during the winter months. >> reporter: in both of these fires, residents were lucky. escaping uninjured. but this cold snap is prompting new warnings to make sure fireplace and stoves are safe. >> not only with the fireplaces overloading them, but using the wrong type of woods, like pines with heavy sap that builds up on the liners and it'sinan the chi you want to stay with clean dry woods. >> reporter: make sure there's no debris around appliance and portable heaters. >> portable heaters are good when they're used properly. they should be plugged directly into the outlet. >> reporter: now, you're being warned not to use extension cords with portable heaters. make sure your smoke detectors are working and use improved indoor heating devices. no grills from the back yard, that can also be a risk for co2 poisoning. nbc 10 news. the cold weather is also having an impact on the philadelphia eagles. today they moved their practice to the link because their practice fields were frozen. we spoke with one eagles fan who says he knows it will be brutally cold for sunday's game but we wouldn't miss it for anything. >> when you're out there, you get some hot chocolate, coffee and stuff like that. you're cheering. it makes it a good day. >> that's dedication right there. this sunday the eagles welcome the cowboys. coming up at 5:45, marshall harris explains the record the eagles could break with sunday's game. remember to tap the nbc atlantic city. today, governor chris christie's office announced it ratified a contract with the police union in atlantic city. the contract reduces the number of officers, but increases the number of hours the officers work over the course of the year. it also preserves salary and benefits changes that took effect back in march. for the first time we are hearing the frantic police calls made during a shooting near the state capitol building in harrisburg. >> he's walking out. he's going back to his car. blue jacket. i think i wounded him. >> where you at? more shots fired! >> the suspect is charged in the shooting rampage just outside the capitol. homeland security is investigating this as a terror attack, police say they haven't found any connections to organized terrorism. let's head to chester county where authorities there are continuing their search for the person who shot and killed a teenager in phoenixville. according to police, a 15-year-old jason ortiz cameron was involved in a drug deal that turned deadly tuesday night. investigators are looking for this car and the driver. cumberland county, more than a dozen workers are out of a job after they were laid off via text message. today some of the workers gathered outside the facility in vineland demanding their money. >> you don't have to decency to call us. we work hard every day at this place for you not to have the decency. where is my paycheck? >> a letter from the company said they were forced to close because of a sudden lack of funding. we reached out to the ceo who told us they haven't filed for bankruptcy and are trying to reopen the lab. in camden county a reminder from police. when you're warming up your car, do not leave your doors unlocked while it's running. >> we're seeing that unintended, unlocked vehicles that may already be running are being stolen. and so people can avoid that by yes, it's cold. if you need to get out and you need to start your car, remember take the keys with you. you can leave the keys in the ignition but the car has got to be locked. >> some other tips police have, keep your doors locked even when you're in the car. always take your keys with you. pennsylvania state wildlife officials say they've received more than 3,300 requests this year for permits to harvest deer and turkey killed by cars. roadkill. that's considered just about average. the number of permits that is. the permits are free. it tul this will be the last weekend you can take advantage of holiday parking specials in philadelphia. saturday morning, tomorrow morning after 11:00, metered parking is free. this, by the way, does not include the loading zones. you will still get a ticket. six garages that charge a flat rate for $8 on saturday and sunday will happen between 11:00 a.m. and midnight. you won't have to worry about parking if you take a cab, use a ride sharing service or take mass transit. aaa is reminding drivers new year's day can be deadly because of people who drink and drive. keep that in mind. do you need bubbly to ring into the new year? you might want to head to the fine wine and spirits store. the store is offering a 10% off sale harris joins us live. >> exactly. this is an important game for a special reason? >> it's not because we're all going to freeze. it has nothing to do with the actual playoffs. the eagles have already locked up the number one seed in the nfc. the road to the super bowl goes to that frozen place you just called lincoln financial field. the eagles can do something they've never done before. the birds' win last week was their 13th of the season. that ties the franchise record. one more win would be a new team record. doug pederson has asked about if that's been talked about within the team. >> that's a milestone for this team, for 2017 to reach. that would be, you know, they go down in the record books as being that. a great team in eagles' history. it's something i've mentioned. it's on nbc 10. all right. let's talk some more bitter arctic blast. it's only getting colder and staying with us. nbc 10 was in camden county this afternoon where the salt truck crews are getting ready to head out treating the roads ahead of tomorrow's snowfall. now to a live look at 76 by 30th street station. traffic is moving pretty well. a lot of people off from work. that's good news. more good news. that snow that's coming, it's not happening until the weekend. a lot of people should be safe and warm inside. >> we want to show you, too, video out of michigan. more perspective for you s. snowy roads led to a 20 car pileup. we must warn you, you know, we're going to see a lot of this, right, glenn, come this weekend, especially? the ground is cold and snow on top of that, you have to be safe on the road. >> they're pretreating the roads. they're brining some of the highways and all. and so they'll be in much better shape than heavi shape. it's the side roads, getting down your driveway, can be quite a chore. even with an inch of snow. if the conditions are right, it can be very slippery. and sometimes when you get six inches of snow it's not a big deal because it's warm and it melts. it really makes a big difference the ground temperature before it starts. in this case, it's really cold. and so we're going to be facing the double whammy of the snow and the bitter cold behind it. it's cold enough today, a high of only 25. 20 in pottstown, 21 in allentown. 22 in trenton. and the current temperatures? well, it's dropped into the teens. pottstown, reading and allentown at 18. 9 in mount pocono right now. calling it froze-adelphia because we're going to be frozen for quite a while. monday is the worst of the worst. it really continues all through the week as you can see on your seven-day forecast at the bottom of your screen. and here we are in chester county, bucks, montgomery, county, west callan township down to 15. west bradford and chester sfr g springs at 18. 19 in blue bell. 18 in warrington. 16 in milford. i mean, that's pretty crazy for temperatures. not even at 6:00 at night. and now we have the dry weather with the snow that's about to come in here. that pipeleup you saw in michig is not related to this issue. it's a lake effect problem they've had there. that stuff that's coming our way is further to the south than michigan. it's a solid snow. by 7:00 a.m. it's like a wall. it starts. once it starts it's going to stay snowing for many hours. now, probably fewer hours in southern delaware and in cape may county. here we are in the middle of the morning and it's snowing almost everywhere. it ends fastest in delaware. you may have a little bit less there. middle afternoon it's pretty much all gone except for a couple of flurries. what we're seeing in the flurries, it's not snowshowers, it's a steady snow. computer models have been fairly consistent for about a coating to perhaps one to two inches. a little bit more in the higher elevations north and west, lesser amounts in southern delaware and extreme south jersey. the feels like temperatures are low enough on saturday, as you can see, still a little bit more
