starts as early as 5:00 a.m. saturday. and with the extreme cold goes through 8:00 a.m. on tuesday. another long lasting thing here, the snow not amounting to a whole lot, a coating of two inches. but slippery on untreated surfaces because the roads are so cold and dangerous. subzero wind chills as we head toward new year's eve and new year's day. timing's just not very good. nothing on the radar close by. we do have a significant area of snow coming through the midwest, hitting the chicago area right now. it's a fast moving clipper system. it has limited potential, but there it is covering much of the area, even by 5:00 a.m. some of the western suburbs. by 8:00 a.m., covering most of us and lasting for several hours through the midday hours, possibly even into early afternoon in some spots. not accumulating a whole lot, but we're talking about slippery conditions. a coating to two inches. it's the fluffy kind of snow that would be blowing around in the wind. after that, it gets brutally cold again, even colder than what we've seen so far. i'll tell you just how cold and when coming up. reveling in the cold? >> the final touches are in place for philadelphia's big holiday celebrations from center city to penn's landing and sunday's eagles' game. you can count on the brutal cold being with us to start the new year. so the city of philadelphia is working to protect police and people out in the elements. >> nbc 10's miguel martinez valle is live at penn's landing ahead of the season's biggest celebrations sunday night. miguel? >> yeah, you can see the cold, it's not keeping people away from blue cross river rink today. we have a few house. it's playing a role in how some people are spending their new year's eve night. >> no, it's too cold to go outside during the day. >> cold ain't going to stop us from doing nothing. it's cold. as long as you're warm, you have fun. >> how you're spending new year's eve might have everything to do with your temperature tolerance. this family is braving the bitter blast and watching the fireworks. >> we're going to be bundled up like crazy, yes. >> others, not so much. >> i'm probably going to stay in the house. it's really cold outside. >> before you snap those new year's evil selfies, check the temperature first. sunday night temperatures are expected to be in the teens. this woman is expecting to call itt an early night. even police are getting ready. they'll be all hands on deck keeping the celebrations safe, but they're going to make sure those hands stay warm with added warming stations. >> if someone is getting cold we can send them for a quick break to warm up and then right back out on the line. >> not just police using warming stations, you can see some people taking advantage of the fire pits phone. investigators say a 3-year-old boy started a fire in new york. >> police say the little boy was playing with a stove. that's when the fire started and quickly spread throughout the building just before 7:00 last night. police say the boy's mother didn't close her apartment door when she ran away. that helped the fire to spread even faster. neighbors rushed to climb down the fire escapes, but it was moving so fast a lot of them didn't even make it out of their apartments. >> by the time i got downstairs the fire had escalated almost to three apartments. all i seen was a bunch of kids on the fire escape cold and with no jacket, no pajamas, no nothing. >> nearly 200 firefighters battled the fire. they say they haven't seen a fire like this in decades. >> we're here at a tragedy in the middle of the holiday season. >> officials say even though firefighters got there in three minutes, the fire was just moving too fast. the cold weather is making it harder to fight fires like this one. this time of year many people are looking for ways to stay wo warm. the dangerous conditions made it difficult for firefighters today, deanna? >> reporter: firefighters from two counties tried to battle this blaze. they spent two hours doing so. the fire chief says the cold weather only made things worse. between the cold and flames, firefighters couldn't catch a break. >> it hampers operations. makes everybody work a little bit slower. we have frozen hose lines. frozen equipment. >> reporter: the call came in before 11:30, an end row unit was filling with smoke. those inside got out. >> it's very sad. it's a nice little neighborhood. we really never had anything like this before. they're good people that live there, so it's a sad day. >> reporter: the people who live there had no choice but to watch. the row of homes were evacuated. residents joined firefighters in the cold. >> it was partialjust the cold working through the elements here. it was just a struggle. >> reporter: the fire started in the basement. fire officials are urging you in this cold to keep appliances clear of debris. don't overload fireplaces and use dry wood. make sure your chimneys are clear. this day after the christmas fire destroyed an entire home. they have not ruled out a malfunction by heating elements. now, on both of these cases, the abington fire and here in horsham, residents escaped without any injury. here one firefighter was treated on the scene for a minor injury. officials are asking you if you're starting fires, using heaters, do it safely to prevent fires like these from starting in the first place. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. a family suliis alive this evening because of quick thinking. one neighbor across the street saw what was happening and ran over with his ladder. >> i had an extension ladder in front of my house and ran over and grabbed it and ran across the street. >> a crew from cherry hill came to the scene with food and items to help the victims and firefighters stay warm. one firefighter had a small injury. right now, fire crews are trying to figure out what started a fire that killed ad2-year-oad 2-year-old boy in sussex county. seven other people were hurt but they're expected to be okay. right now, for the first time we are hearing the frantic police cars made during a shooting near the state capitol building in harrisburg. >> he's walking out towards -- he's going back to his car. blue jacket. >> where are you at? >> more shots fired. he's in the parking lot. >> the man is charged with the shooting rampage just outside the capitol. homeland security is investigating this as a terror attack, but police say they haven't found any connection to organized terrorism. ten people are dead in egypt, including eight christians after the latest attack targeting churches. this happened at a coptic church in a suburb of cairo. militants have targeted coptic christians several times in the past year. one woman is dead after she was hit by a car on route 73. it happened just before midnight. the crash shut down the southbound lanes for hours, while crews cleared the scene. police tell us the driver stopped. lehigh university is banking on hemp making a comeback. the school is looking to form an alliance that would seek federal funding for hemp research. hemp comes from the same plant as marijuana. supporters believe hemp could deliver an economic windfall for the lehigh valley. ♪ ♪ you know what that music means, the new year is days away. just like every year the biggest party of 2018 will be at keith's house. >> oh, yeah, of course. today crews tested out the graffi graffiti at my house. they tested it because they wanted to test how it did in the cold air. here's a live look at times square as everybody gets ready. officials expect two million people will show up to ring in 2018. the nypd is ramping up security this year. people have to go through metal detectors, bag inspections, there will also be bomb snitchisniffing dogs. in delaware, patients and families at the children's hospital are celebrating new year's a little bit early. the hospital had a noon year's eve celebration with music, food and give aways. there was a countdown to noon that played all around the hospital throughout the day. organizers tell us they love to have every patient home for the holidays, but for the ones that are still in the hospital they're making sure they have a special 2018 celebration. now to a live look in philadelphia at the blue cross river rink at penn's landing. it's packed this afternoon. this will be the site of the biggest new year's eve celebration in the city. nbc 10 will broadcast the sugar house casino new year's eve fireworks live on sunday. you can practice to lincoln financial field outside. why? it's because the field at the complex was frozen. that's how cold it is today. marshall harris joins us live. >> the birds probably were not planning on being out in this brutal weather today? >> well, you have to be ready for the bitter cold of game day. after holding walk through practices indoors the last two days, doug pederson wanted to practice outside today. the turf is heated at lincoln financial field. pederson plans to go to the link began coming together yesterday. >> i want to be outside. that field is heated, it's warm. our field here is a little bit frozen. it's easy, the stadium is right there. four buses, coaches, players let's go. it's as easy as that. our field crew do a good job at preparing the field for us. it's not covered at this time. it's great opportunity to be outside and get some good work in. >> no frozen tundra over there at the link. pederson keeping things interesting heading into a finale that will have no affect on the eagles' playoff position. the starters will play sunday against the cowboys, but did not say how much. >> got to work out the kinks. get it done now while you have a chance 10, the official station of your philadelphia eagles. let's take a live look at the icebox that is lincoln financial field. frigid temperatures for fans on sunday whether you're heading down early just to tailgate or you'll be there for kickoff. layer it up. >> layers, layers, layers. cover all skin. glenn you were talking about this yesterday but it's even colder today. >> yeah. and it's going to be colder for the game on sunday than it was for the monday night game. the game at night that everybody thought was so cold. going to feel colder than that. it's 24 right now, despite sunshine. only 20 in some of the suburbs here with sunshine. and we continue to see these temperatures go down. calling it froze-adelphia. look at these numbers over the next several days. monday looks to be the coldest, new year's day. mummers, not exactly lucky this year. we've got a land breeze, the ocean is down to 37 degrees. but temperatures at the beach, 26 in avalon, upper township, dennis township. and it's going to get worse than that. we have dry weather over us right now. clouds starting to come in. this is the area of snow. it's not a huge storm. it does not have tremendous amounts of moisture. it's not going to redevelop off the coast. but it is going to hit very cold surfaces. so it's going to stick. it could start as early as 5:00 a.m. or 6:00 a.m. by 8:00 a.m. covering much of chester and berks county, much of delaware. it may take a little longer to reach the shore. midday hours should be a peak, maybe starting to taper off in southern delaware by then. that's a steady snow and it's an accumulating snow. there we are 2:00 and it's still snowing in new jersey. it's really taperer off in philadelphia. it's not going to last all day. it should be lasting for a good number of hours. and our computer models continue to show coating to perhaps an inch or two at the most across the area. not exactly big differences from north to south or east to west. here we go with the feels like. once the snow is gone, it's starting to feel like the teens again. it's going to be really cold tomorrow. but that is just the beginning. here's saturday night. that's really cold. single digits. but we've seen that. here's sunday morning. now, we're talking about near zero. one below in allentown. 11 below in mount pocono. sunday afternoon, low single digits. sunday night. now we're talking new year's eve. midnight, eight below is the way it's feeling in doylestown. early monday morning, if mummers want to get out and good a good spot how about five below? new year's morning, here we are much of new year's day is going to be feeling like it's below zero and near zero. so saturday, we have that snow. sunday, it's bitter cold. monday it's even colder. but at least it's going to stay dry. it will be dry for the eagles game but look at these feels like temperatures. single digits by the end of the game feeling like about seven degrees. new year's eve, here we go. one below zero in philadelphia at midnight, seven below lehigh valley. if that's not bad enough, for the mummers, if they get started early, it's going to feel like it's below zero. and the best that we're going to do by midday is about three. so that is brutally cold. the problem as far as canceling it is the forecast for next weekend. so here's monday with the bitter cold, coldest of the cold. we're generally dry next week. looks like the coastal system will be too far off shore. then we get another brutal hit next friday and saturday. next weekend is pretty cold, too. and by the following monday it might be warm enough to have a mix of snow and rain. >> wow. all right. some perspective. that's what we're here for. if you think it's cold here, take a look at these pictures. this is the snow covered tundra in erie, pennsylvania. those are near whiteout conditions reported today. it comes after they received 34 inches just on christmas day. so far, they've received more than 100 inches of snow for the month of december. i'll deal with the cold i suppose, because that's brutal. something to warm you up right now, from freezing to fever. lotto fever. >> somebody could saturday snow that could create some slick conditions across our area. this is a live look at the schuylkill prexpressway. backed up right now, certainly the westbound lanes. crews will be out and about in the overnight hours treating the roadways. the snow that's headed our way is from the midwest and could impact the start of your new year's weekend. >> it's no fun stepping out into the cold. commuters were careful to cover up with whatever they could find to avoid that bitter air. there's only so much that a hot cup of coffee can do for you when an afternoon feels this freezing cold. there's more of that same cold weather on tap for the weekend. >> nbc 10's first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is tracking the timing of the snow and how much you can see in your neighborhood. glenn? >> yeah, we're going to be seeing snow and then a snow cover helps the following cold air mass be even colder because the sun's rays spend the energy melting the snow instead of warming the ground. this is up in camelback where the feels like temperature is going to be a mere 20 below zero on new year's morning. 20 below zero. we've got a double barrel first alert. first for the snow, then for the next batch of brutal cold. so the snow could start as early as 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. the worst of the cold lasts through 8:00 a.m. on tuesday. subzero wind chills late saturday night into tuesday morning, including in the philadelphia area which barely got around zero with the last one. maybe closer to five below at worst in this case. as we look back to the west, we find the area of snow, it's not a huge storm. not going to be a huge storm. it moves through fast, that's why they call it a clipper. then it comes in over the very cold ground. untreated surfaces should see this snow stick. it's a steady snow, even though it may not be coming down heavily, you can see it's hour after hour after hour. it's not just a few flurries or snowshowers. around 1:00 is the treatment in our area helping to treat children with peanut allergies. >> reporter: 8-year-old miranda had lived would the fear and frustration of having a peanut allergy. thanks to a new treatment, she is now eating one of her favorite snacks every day. peanut and chocolate chips. >> my own anxiety is much lower. i have allowed miranda to do more things. >> reporter: her mother discovered she had a peanut allergy when she was 17 months old after giving her peanut butter cereal. miranda broke out and hives and was rushed to the hospital. a dose of benadryl solved the problem. six months later, another allergic reaction. this time miranda fell victim to cross contammination. >> she was eating goldfish crackers off a plate that someone had previously had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. >> reporter: at home they created a peanut-free environment. she could only eat meals prepared by her parents. the anxiety of a severe potentially life-threatening allergic reaction was overwhelming. >> i didn't know what was going to happen in the future. so it was a little scary, but i wasn't completely scared. >> reporter: last year, the family met a doctor who treats children with peanut allergies. >> giving small doses of the food that the person is allergic too, in this case peanuts, and gradually systematically over a period of several months we can get a child who might have been highly allergic to peanuts to tolerating eight to ten peanuts a day. >> reporter: miranda started her therapy in june of 2016. the doctor personally monitored her treatment. the treatment starts with giving peanut in the liquid form. then a powdered capsule. eventually an actual peanut. it's a gradual process that takes months to develop. it's not a cure, the treatment builds tolerance. >> the patient stays in the office an hour after the dose. >> reporter: the treatment worked for miranda. >> now that wae know she has a tolerance for peanuts, we're not worried about her accidently eating more than a full serving of peanuts. we know a full serving is safe for her. >> reporter: the doctor says the treatment has an 85% success rate and he plans to treat milk and egg allergies. >> if you think this treatment may work for your child, call your pediatrician. now to a look at the other stories we're following you county by county. north hampton county, police officers are looking for someone who pretended to be one of them, stopping and frisking a teenager. the teen said he was walking in easton around 11:30 last night when the man approached him. the man was wearing a jacket with patches. the man told the teen it was a routine stop and frisk. he frisked the teenager, but didn't take anything before driving away. kent county, there's a new version of a ban on non-hunting firearms in delaware state parks and forests. it includes places like visitor centers and camping sites. the state supreme court ruled the initial ban is unconstitutional. more than a dozen works at nature labs are out of a job after they were laid off via text messages. some of the workers gathered outside the company in vineland. they state they plan to file for bankruptcy. we reached out to the ceo who said they haven't filed for bankruptcy and are trying to reopen the lab. still ahead at 4:00, a surreal tweet from a former president. >> who is using eagles' defender chris long as model of what's best about america. flu fears. the virus is gaining steam and starting to take a deadly toll across our area. signing the dotted lines, the police force that just ratified adn getting worse. the centers for disease control releases the latest numbers today. last week, 36 states reported widespread flu activity, including pennsylvania. that's up from 23 states the week before. 13 states reported regional activity, including new jersey. delaware had less flu activity than both pennsylvania and new jersey. there is still time to get the flu shot. tis the time for new year's resolution. pediatricians say it's a good time to teach children good habits to begin 2018. they suggest parents encourage their children to clean up. children between five and 12 can resolve to exercise every day, use sunscreen and tell an adult about any bullying they experience. teenagers, experts suggest to resist peer pressure and to find healthy ways to cope with stress. there's former president barack obama is reflecting on 2017 and recognizing an eagles player for playing a big part. president obama took to twitter to post some of the positive stories of the year. he included eagles' player chris long. long decides to give up his entire year's salary to fund scholarships in his hometown on charlottesville, virginia. he responded by saying honored to be mentioned sir and it's been a pleasure. this is unbelievable. bananas, they are certainly a healthy snack. there's one boy out there who thinks they make a perfect christmas gift. >> his uncle wrapped up the banana and here's the reaction. >> open it. >> banana! banana! i got a banana! >> clearly, the uncle who did this, he knew the kid loves bananas. this video has been retweeted 300,000 times since being posted to twitter. we love it. let's take a live look outside at camelback resort up in the pocono mountains. it's packed out there, looking good. another harsh day on the slopes but not keeping the skiers away. >> 100 or so people in that frame. preparing for new year's eve, or sunday night, you're rushing around back and forth. >> it's rough. it's rough now. right? it's going to get rougher by sunday night. it's just going to be brutal out there. and if you're planning to head up to the poconos, you probably know how to dress properly and you'll need to because it's going to feel like it's 20 below zero. and i have the numbers to prove it. not just pulling it out of the air. 24 degrees in philadelphia now. we've had sunshine all day. we've had sunshine across the entire area. it's still not helping very much. it is brutally cold. the average high this time of the year is 41 degrees. let's see. any days -- we don't even get to 30 for this upcoming week for the most part. it looks like monday is going to be the coldest of all, new year's day. and some of the neighborhoods north and west already are back down into the teens. berks county and lehigh, north hampton counties, we've got 17 degrees in fleetwood. 16 in leonardsville. 18 in nazareth. 19 in easton, bethlehem and whiteha whitehall. just think, it's going to be much colder than that by monday morning. we've got dry conditions now, but there's clearly an area of snow coming down. you can see this jet stream coming right into it. that's one of the reasons that snow is there. and let's time it out for you as we go into the morning by 6:00 a.m., if it's going to be snowing anywhere, it would be part of delaware, especially western newcastle county. parts of chester county. parts of berks county. then it spreads across the rest of the area. it's not real heavy or else it would be darker blue. it is going to be lasting for hours. and then with the road temperatures or any kind of ground temperatures, so cold it would stick on untreated surfaces. at noon it's ending in delaware, so be limited numbers of hours. and the last place to see it end, it will be ocean county which could see a bit. then nothing more than flurries in the afternoon. but it's going to be an accumulating snow. not accumulating a lot. no one place should be getting a lot of snow, more than three inches. but hardly anybody's going to miss it. nobody's going to miss this, the cold. here's saturday morning with a southerly wind it's feeling like it's barely in the low teens. saturday afternoon, once the snow ends, it's still very cold. it's nothing compared to sunday. here is saturday night, feeling like it's in the single digits. now we're getting the west, northwest wind. sunday morning feeling close to zero. sunday afternoon, here's the middle of the eagles game feeling like 6. 2 in doylestown and allentown. sunday night as we get toward midnight, now we're talking about below zero. ten below in doylestown. there's the 21 below in the poconos. i'm not exaggerating. it comes right out of the computer. that's a combination of the low temperature and that there's going to be wind. this is going to be another very cold week, all week and even into next weekend. >> i remember growing up as a kid being out at the mummers pparade and literal parade and literally freezing, but this is going to be something else. >> it would be one of the coldest, if they have it if they don't cancel it. one reason why they might try to do it is the forecast for next weekend is not a whole lot warmer. >> what a
