it was all caught on camera. >> nbc 10 news starts now. >> right now a wintry mix moving in across pennsylvania, new jersey, and delaware. just in time for christmas. good evening, everyone, i'm ted greenberg. get ready for a messy mix of rain and snow that will make for sloppy conditions early christmas day. a chilly christmas eve here in philadelphia. nbc 10 on the ben franklin parkway where people were bundled up outside. it will be a very windy christmas with gusts up to 50 miles an hour. so if you're getting ready to hit the eagles tailgate tomorrow, be prepared. let's get right to steve sosna for a look at the christmas day forecast. >> that's right, ted. i'll have that for you in just a second. if you are headed to midnight service, it is really raw, rainy and rude outside. this traffic camera shaking in the wind right now. we have a sideways rain falling in philadelphia and many of our suburbs right now. a live look at the radar. you see the rain and snow stretches from the allentown down to northern delaware right now. and where the rain is falling the heaviest is across chester and montgomery county right now, right by valley forge, limerick, coatesville, west chester. you're seeing the rain and wet snowflakes mixing in. it's feeling very rude outside. the one saving grace from a slippery night are the temperatures. they're above freezing. so we don't have to worry about an icing situation, unless you're up in the extreme northern parts of the lehigh valley or the poconos. this is what you can expect for christmas day. sunshine returning to the area. but it really is about the wind tomorrow. gusts to 50 miles an hour with temperatures in the 30s. it will feel like the 20s. and that will seem warm compared to the temperatures i have in the ten-day thousands of church goers took time from the last minute shopping and holiday stress to pause and celebrate during this christmas eve. nbc 10's aundrea cline-thomas was all over the region marking the occasion. she is live at the basilica of saints peter and paul. >> reporter: the rain is not dampening the spirit of parishioners tonight. you know a lot of people are coming out. there are holiday carols being sung inside the basilica right now as christians are ready to celebrate christmas. ♪ it's not an ordinary sunday. it's christmas eve. and from the basilica of saints peter and paul. ♪ joyful all you nations >> reporter: the mother bethel african american episcopal church and beyond, christians across our region are gathering to celebrate the birth of jesus. >> it means homecoming. it means everybody that i love, all my college kids come back to see us. >> reporter: in addition to morning worship, st. andrews hosts a candlelight service that is a tradition for families to attend. >> the memories will stay with you when you leave here. >> reporter: from church to church, poinsettias lined the altars. parishioners arrived wearing red and green. >> a child is born and unto this morn month is given. >> reporter: at sharon baptist church, pastors emphasize the importance of one of the holiest days in the christian faith there. >> are many people who have different opinions as to whether he was born on the 25th or not. that's not as significant to us as the fact we do know he was born. >> reporter: what better way to celebrate a birthday than with gifts? >> it's a year of giving, celebrating with everybody. >> opening presents. going to open a lot of presents. it will be fun. >> reporter: and so many people can't wait to open those presents. and right now, though, here at the basilica, a lot of church goers are going to usher in christmas day at midnight mass. reporting live, aundrea line thomas, nbc 10 news. stores were packed with last-minute holiday shoppers, from people getting the finishing touches for their christmas day feasts to the present procrastinators at the king of prussia mall. >> the last minute annual tradition. we do this every christmas eve. it's the festive time of the year. all of us have different jobs and do different things. and this is the time that we can come together and enjoy our brotherhood. >> holiday shopping has served as a gift to stores this year. first data says holiday sales are up more than 6.5% since november 1. reading terminal market in center city was bustling today. vendors we espoke with say this weekend has been especially busy from stopping in just to get some lunch to getting a philadelphia-themed gift. the market has a little something for everyone. >> lots of choices here. >> it's a good way to please a large group of people. >> right. >> there is lots of -- lots of opportunities to try different things. special. magical. >> the market is closed tomorrow. it reopens tuesday at 8:00 a.m. well, if you're biting into canolli this christmas, you could be taking part in a south philadelphia tradition. each year on christmas eve morning, hundreds of people head to termini brothers to get their hands on the homemade treat. before the sun was up this morning, a long line formed outside the bakery. although the store is filled with decadent desserts, it is the kovtd canolli most people are craving for christmas. what is it about the canolli? >> oh, they're the best in the city. it's just tradition. every christmas eve i'm down here. >> i come down and stock up on christmas away from home and on the front lines. this is the 16th year american troops have been stationed in afghanistan. soldiers at bagram air base sang christmas hymns and lit candles. they also were given care packages sent overseas from the states. earlier in the day president trump thanked u.s. troops over a joyed conference call. the presidents said americans are thankful for their service, and they are the greatest people on earth. >> we're grateful for each of you who spent this christmas away from your families and defend all of our families. our freedoms and our flag. every hurt and unemployed. but kelly rigby, the wife of chester's deputy fire commissioner and city council woman portia west got word of barber's struggles. they teamed up to make sure her children would have the christmas they deserve. >> i had so many donations and it was just heartwarming. it's really restored my faith in humanity. >> right. there. >> is a lot of caring people out there. >> cute! happy. that's what i live for, to see them happy. now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> tracking a messy mix this christmas eve. a combination of rain and snow is pushing into our area right now. snow coming down just a couple of hours ago near the art museum. but none of it will be sticking around for christmas. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist steve sosna joins us. it's a biting wind that is really going to be the big issue tomorrow, right? >> that's right. the focus goes from the messy mixture we have out right now to the wind tomorrow. really hold on to the steering wheel tomorrow with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. the wind out there right now, it's breezy. but nothing like what we'll see during the daylight hours tomorrow. it's just kind of a rude, raw, christmas eve night right now with an area of rain in and around the city and the surrounding suburbs. pockets of snow mixed in with the rain in northern bucks and montgomery county. you get up into the lehigh valley, you have pockets of sleet and snow. a little bit of everything. the good news is the temperatures are mainly above freezing in most spots. so it should just be wet on the ground even if you do see a slushy accumulation on the grass. this is a vigorous energetic system moving through ohio right now. it's going to spawn a coastal low that moves off to our north and east. and normally that would be a big snowstorm for us. but that storm gets going too late for the party for us. so we have to just deal with some rain and some chilly showers. right now up in lehigh valley, we're seeing snowflakes right now. there could be icy spots on the roadways. when you see temperatures like, this 31 in any surface untreated will be slippery. closer to the city in and around the immediate suburbs, south jersey, it's just wet outside. so you don't have to worry than. again, it's not really a friendly night to be outside with those temperatures in the rain coming on down. future tracker, we show the rain moving out of here. by 2:00 in the morning, tapering off in our southern suburbs. it gets out by about 4:00 or 5:00. there may be flurries whipping around. but you'll also feel the wind kicking up that wind will start gusting 40, 45, 50 miles per hour during the day. and the temperatures will not be mild either. we're looking at temperatures tomorrow in the 30s with feels-like temperatures in the low to mid-20s. if there is going to be accumulation, it will be up on this higher ridge tops in berks valley. slippery travel in the poconos. look how the winds ramp up tomorrow. well go from 10 or 15-miles-per-hour gusts to 7:00 a.m. where we're gusting to 40, 45 miles per hour. and then we'll ramp up the gusts as we go through the day tomorrow, gusting upwards of 50 miles per hour. so watch out for some tree limbs, some scattered power outages. and again, it will just be a blustery and cold day, even though the sunshine will be out. that sunshine will need every ray of it. with temperatures in the mid- to upper 30s. this is how it really feels outside tomorrow with temperatures in the mid- to upper 20s, dropping into the teens. not our warmest eagles game. look at this. temperatures in the teens for game time. if you're headed out to the game to tailgate, take this seriously. you've got to have the layers and you have to an an option to keep warm, whether it's for tailgating or getting inside your car or taking a break from the cold. that's the real cold that is coming our way for next week. and we'll have more on that in the ten-day forecast at the end of the
