Now to south jersey where two people are dead after this crash, where one of the cars went right into a pole. State police on the scene right now of this creek. It happened around noon in tab p bett tabernacle. Ted greenberg is there. What can you tell us . Reporter the investigation is well under way. New Jersey State Police confirmed to me two people are dead. They were inside that vehicle, a gmc yukon, which is wrapped around a pole right near the intersection and it hit the pole and caught fire just before noon today. Right now theres no word from state police on what led to the crash. It did prompt authorities to evacuate. More than 50 students and employees from the sequoia alternative program, which is part of the school district, and that program is housed in that building and that evacuation as a result of roads being closed in this area and concerns about buses not being able to get through later in the day. Those students and staffers taken to a local transportation yard about five miles away, im told. Parents are able to pick their kids up at that location. Again, two people who were in that suv were killed. Im staying in touch with new Jersey State Police to try to get more information on what led to that crash. Hes dedicated his life to the district. Hes trying to change gerrymandering. Everything that is bad, hes trying to fix. And for them to turn on him like a rabbit dog is crazy. Reporter she says calls for leachs resignation are premature. And today, pennsylvania governor calls for leach to resign his state senate post. We went to leachs county office. Workers there are on the job but not talking. At leachs home, no one answered the door. Leach says that the allegations are getting out of hand, writing on facebook saying hes taking a step back for his campaign from congress but not explaining what that means and wrote, while ive always been a gregarious person, its heartbreaking to me that ive put someone in a position that has made them feel uncomfortable or disrespected. I will take more care in my words and my action and make it my top priority to help change the culture around us. Reporter now, the governor says he has not spoken with daylin leach since the statements were made public. A new bill could let new jersey lawmakers reenroll in the Pension System after they get moved to a new office. Critics say its a move that would benefit a select few. Right now at 4 30, we have breaking news out of washington state. At least six people were killed when an amtrak derailed and the number of dead is expected to rise. That train was making its first run along a faster route when the derailment happened. Witnesses v witnesses scrambled to help those stuck in the debris. They couldnt move. Some had broken legs or ankles and most had head trauma. Harry hairston has been following it for us. Weve learned that positive train control was not activated on the tracks and youre about to hear for the first time radio transmissions from right after the derailment. We are on the ground. Someone on amtrak crew had be heard calling railroad dispatch around 7 30 this morning. Hey guys, what happened . We were coming around the corner to take the bridge right north into squally and we went on the ground. Reporter amtrak confirms that positive train control, a technology that can stop the speeding train, was not activated on the track. Allen is a Railroad Safety expert. Safety would only be an issue if this was, in fact, an overspeed around the curve or overspeed in general. Reporter we know the tracks were upgraded to handle highspeed trains. Thats designed to help the vehicle go around curves at a faster speed than you normally would be able to because the car body actually rotates. Reporter the rescue say its too early to say and despite this derailment, rail is still a safe way to travel. Its clearly a serious issue but its a very, very rare event. The tracks are owned by sound transit out of seattle. No one there has replied to our email for kmet. Reporter on monday morning, tragedy aboard amtrak 501. Things just started to tip over and as it was going around and then all of a sudden ended up on its side and everything went dark and stuff started flying around and that was it and then it stopped. Reporter a stunned motorist watched the train derail. I was just right in front of it. It was really nerveracking and sick to your stomach after seeing this right now. Reporter multiple vehicles were hit by the falling train car as others came crashing into the pile. The people that were in all of the vehicles, even when you see the pictures, its pretty horrific, at this point, nobody in any of the vehicles is a fatal. Reporter 77 passengers and five crew members were on board the train heading south from seattle to portland. Witnesses scramble to rescue trapped survivors and help emergency crews get them to hospitals. Some of them couldnt move. They had back injuries, broken legs or ankles and most of them had head trauma. Reporter an ntsb team is en route. A traumatic and dangerous scene as the morning commute turned deadly within seconds. This brangs back memories of a similar crash in philadelphia in may of 2018
