But i want to show you the street. The street is also covered right now. And that is a concern for drivers. They are, as you see, they are taking it slowly. Its not usually this slow out here on broad street, especially during this time of the afternoon. Now, the city was waiting for the snow to begin falling before deploying its 85 trucks to put out salt on the streets. For drivers, that is a warning. A lot of these roads had not been treated yet. Those plows still have to come through and put down salt. Thats something you need to be careful of as you go out. The city has also issued a code blue. That means its dangerous to be outside for long periods of time. Although its snowed before, today they said theyre going to have even more outreach teams out on the streets trying to get homeless folks inside, trying to convince them to go to shelters. You see people right now, you see all the snow on this persons hood right now. Everybodys bundled up trying to get to where theyre going. We know Everyone Wants to know just how much snow are you going to see where you live . Meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is breaking it down for us neighborhood by neighborhood. Glenn, it really does depend on where you live . Yeah, and some places are getting it earlier than others, some are going to be getting it toward the end of this storm. Lets go neighborhood by neighborhood. This all came in from the southwest. It all kind of exploded from nowhere. Its not like a storm that moved in from ohio or up from georgia. Its a very unusual kind of system. Lets go one area at a time. Well go hour by hour, of course, we started off very slowly at the jersey shore. It was partly a mixture. Then as we go into the next hour, were talking about one to two inches of snow. By the time its over, this is the area thats going to end the latest. Two inches or so in Atlantic City, inch and a half at cape may. Two and a half in vineland. 2. 7 in hammondton. Thats fairly significant snows, especially since a lot of it is going to fall in a short period of time. Here we are rin delaware. It was too warm in southern delaware as you can see with the rain. But weve got to go a couple hours before this happens. By the time we go to 7 00 or 8 00 when its over, a little over an inch at lewis, georgetown, dover, an inch and a half as we head toward northern delaware were closer to two inches. In philadelphia itself, we started off right around the noon hour, started off very light. And then, of course, started coming down. The temperature well below freezing. And so as we go through the afternoon and into the evening, we have amounts that are in the two to two and a half inch range. And further to the west, in the northern and western suburbs, Lehigh Valley, were seeing lesser amounts of snow. Its already tapering off there. And were talking about. 7 of an inch in allentown and a little bit over an inch in reading. This is a quick moving system as weve seen. Its going to move out fast. By 8 00, its all gone, but with the temperatures as low as it is, everything is going to ice over again tonight and into tomorrow morning. Well talk more about the weekend coming up. All right, glenn, well check back with you. The snow has been coming down now for a few hours in montgomery county. You can see snow covering trees and cars. Deanna durannte is joining us. Reporter you are looking from the direction of norristown there as cars are coming up ridge pike where the road has two lanes that gets down into one lane as you head towards philadelphia. Were told that area right now, very slow going. If thats the route youre taking. Take a look at the roads, you can see part of the problem here is the roads were very, very cold. Even though salting was done with penn dot roads and local roads, its still a little slippery for cars out there. We checked in with police in upper marion, they say in the span of five minutes they had four fender benders. Make sure you take it easy on the roads, it may not be a ton of snow, but it is still slippery out there. Thats the latest reporting l e live. Nbc 10 news. Four accidents in five minutes. That tells the story right there. Thank you. Lets take a live look over center city right now. As you saw, the snow is coming down here in center city, philadelphia. It has been for a few hours. Where are you right now and what are the conditions like . Reporter erin, jim, were eastbound and its totally slippery out here. Take a look at the ground, you see accumulation and slush here. If youre on a highway or on a more transitive road, you can see the accumulation, weve seen cars just really slowing down. Were going about 20 Miles Per Hour here. Its a 35 mile zone. We heard that woman slid coming out of a parking spot. Were getting in pictures and video from social media. We have a mixed review. I think it depends if youre driving in the situation, the review is not so good. A lot of people are making the most of it as well. Lets take a look, we have a lot of tools out there. Lets take a look at one of our cameras in the allentown area. Well show we have snowing conditions up in the Lehigh Valley as well. Also, conditions from the president ial city camera, weve been walking the schuylkill expressway back up here. It theres the allentown camera for you. You can see snowing likely there. If youre on the schuylkill expressway right now, the commute is awful, along with many other roadways. Lets take a look at some of the pictures and photos and video youve been sending us. Weve been seeing so many of these videos and pictures coming in here. This is from south jersey, you can see the streets, snow covered. This is one of our spots where we think the most snow will fall. This is near haddonfield in new jersey. This video along the new jersey turnpike. Even the new jersey turnpike itself, a major roadway, has these slushy spots. No where is unsusceptible to seeing these slushy conditions. You can see in the city, a lot of the side and secondary streets are snowy as well. One last thing i want to show you, this is on our website and also on the app. Its nbcphiladelphia. Com traffic. Where you see all these little hands, that means we have an incident. Theyre everywhere. So if youre headed out and youre thinking about traveling, maybe think again. Tim furlong is live for us in newark. A lot of folks trying to do some shopping, but this is not the best weather to be out there. Reporter if you like snow, its a good festive start to the shopping weekend. You can see its coming down hard. It really piles up quickly. A little while ago i would have said its a pleasant distraction. You can see weve gotten a little bit more snow now and its starting to pile up. This is at the cabello snow. You can see people coming out, theyre going to be getting onto the roads. Del dot said when it put down the road salt it did a good job of surviving through today. In some spots it is slippery. Weve seen cars slipping and sliding. People want to have fun coming out to shop, but people are telling us on the road, even though state police are not reporting any major accidents, theyre starting to say at this point that the roads are getting dicey. Take a listen to a couple drivers we just spoke with. Slow and actually it was a little bit of slipperiness. It was getting a little treacherous out there. My feeling is its going to be cold, let it snow. If its going to be cold and not snow thats a waste of time. Reporter the speed limit has been reduced on i495. You can see the snow is piling up here, there are slick spots, this is very slippery turf here in the parking lot. They have put salt down here. Again, the snow is sitting on top of it. Theyre doing the best they can. If you look up onto the onramp over there, thats the onramp from the complex here to get back on 95 north. It is barely moving. I want to point out visibility, its not that great. Take a look over there, its getting a little hard to see across the parking lot. Wherever you are, be very careful. Im going to go inside cabellos for a while. Were live, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. Tim, thanks, well check back with you from newark. Back to our first alert weather, tracking this snow. This is a live look at the schuylkill expressway from our president ial city apartment camera. Check that out. A lot of folks going really slowly right now. As tim just mentioned the visibility out there is not great. We also know there are slick spots out there, so youre definitely going to have to take your time. Lets go to Harry Hairston who is outside of our studios. Where its also coming down here in montgomery county. Reporter take a look at this. What is on our patio right now . That looks like a couple inches, close to, i dont know, i dont have a measuring stick, but that could be almost two and a half inches. Thats whats hitting here right onthen stre on the street. Traffic is getting very snarled as the snow continues to come down. Charlie, our photographer is doing a good job showing you. Traffic is moving slower and picking up a whole lot more. Last time we checked in with you you were on kelly drive. Tell us where you are now and what are you seeing . Reporter still on kelly drive, jim and erin. Were eastbound. You see in front of us a city salt truck doing what its doing, putting out some salt on the streets here. If you are behind one of these, also, if you find yourself behind or near one, you want to stay clear so they can do their job out here. Theres a lot of slush out here. Its very slippery. If youre on kelly drive, were going right now about ten Miles Per Hour. This is a 35 mile zone. You know a lot of people also go a little faster. Right now, were seeing a lot of brake lights. Take some extra time as youre going home. Live from the storm force, back to you. Were sort of right in the thick of it right now in our area. And, yeah, this is center city as well. Which camera is this for us . Yeah, this is from one of our live trucks on broad on pine. The sidewalks have a little bit more as well. It was good to see one of the city trucks out there trying to lay some salt down. You can see theres a lot of slush there on the roads. Meteorologist glenn hurricane schwartz is standing by. This is a fast mover youre saying, but the snow is still coming down. Weve got a couple more hours of this. Yes. And the temperature is so low that the roads are cold and thats why the snow is sticking. Normally in december, weve got marginal temperatures, and it tends to melt during the daytime hours. Not today. You can see the back edge of this thing, already past a harrisburg, this is a very small system overall. It just happened to be concentrated during the wrong time of day. We can see the darker blues or purples depending on your tv, are the heavier snows. But even that is not especially heavy. This is the highest intensity that we have. What it is in relation to the other snow, so up here with the lightest snow well, compare today the heaviest snow, this is four times heavier than that is. Even the heaviest snow is not what we will consider a big snowstorm for the wintertime. For philadelphia, the colors are getting a little bit brighter, a little bit whiter. Less blue. That indicates, to me, that its lightening up a little bit. But in new jersey, thats where the heaviest of it is right now. Especially in pemberton, you can see getting those darker blues. And the darker blues into central delaware and into south jersey. The back edge of this thing already moving out. The visibility gives us an idea of how heavy the snow is. Potts town, mount holly, wilmington. Thats heavy snow. One and a half miles in reading is not bad. Lancaster not bad. Dover is not bad yet. Not too bad at the shore yet. So very, very small system. Look at the temperatures. 25 in philadelphia. 23 in mount holly. Theres no warm air anywhere in our region. The only place close to the freezing mark, not in northern delaware, not in central delaware, you got to go to southern delaware and right along the beaches. Milton at 32. Millsboro 32. This area is starting to cool down and that will change over to snow later in the evening and the next couple of hours. Heres the hour by hour futurecast going ending from west to east, pretty quickly, by 6 00 things should really be tapering off in the philadelphia area and pretty much over with in the rest of pennsylvania. And by 7 30 or 8 00, its even done with at the show. Again, very limited time period. So the amounts of snow we showed you some of the details, but in general, one to three inches, a little bit more in parts of new jersey and delaware. Generally away from the coastline because there was a marginal temperature at the beginning. Weve got snow, maybe till 7 00. And then were clearing out tonight, but you can see those temperatures way down into the 20s. So anything thats around is going to refreeze. And so there will be some icy areas tomorrow morning. Youre going to have to shovel in the morning. But youre not going to have to shovel six inches of snow. Its a limited kind of storm. Quick and out of here. Even when the snow stops, you still have to be careful. Yeah, because unless you get rid of the snow, its just go to stay there. Theres nothing thats going to eliminate it until tomorrow when the sun comes out. All right. Well check back in with you. Make sure you have the nbc 10 app with you to find out when the snow will move out of your neighborhood tonight.
