off. deanna durante, nbc10 news. following a developing story. a shootout near a day care puts nearby schools on lockdown. this happened at haverford avenue and 67th street in west philadelphia. police say two people in two cars began firing at one another around 1:00 this afternoon and one of the bullets went through the window of a day care. a nearby overbrook high school was placed on lockdown. nobody was hit and officers are looking for the people who fired the shots. to weather now, and the big chill is here. you are looking live at the blue cross river rink at penn's landing. ice looks great out there. nobody taking part, but that's probably going to change later. a cold walk, though, in brandy wine park in wilmington. that didn't stop a few people, though, from enjoying were in the 60s. right now those temperatures in the 40s. nbc10 chief meteorologist tammie souza is here. tammie, you have been warning us about the nose-dive in temperatures and also the approach of maybe our first snow of the season. >> i think i sound like a broken record, don't i? >> just enough. >> i say it every news cast. you have been patient, and all of you at home have been taking note i think because i have noticed extra jackets on people outside. not just because it's cold. i think people are ramping up. this morning we were quite mild. basically the temperature after midnight was in the 50s. then we drop down to the 40s. that was, oh, about noontime. and right now we are holding at 43 degrees. it was quite a drop from the upper 50s to the low 40s and then a teensy bounce back upward because of some sunshine out there. we are looking at 38 right now in allentown. 42 in wilmington. mount pocono you are at 31 degrees. the temperatures are not going to go upward for tomorrow. this is right about where we're going to be. so you are going to have to dress appropriately. it looks like by the end of the week we will be cold enough, especially friday night, to see our first closer to the highway. amazing images. fire officials say the fire has grown to four times the size of manhattan. new at 5:00. nbc10's steven fischer is in los angeles where some of the city's most expensive properties are now destroyed. the wind here in southern california is fueling these wildfires. i am here in huntington beach just south of los angeles, and i talked to some locers arouals w me the wind is not normal for this time of year. >> reporter: southern california is on fire right now. >> it's bad. everything is burning. >> reporter: multiple wildfires raging out of control and ravaging everything in their path. >> now it's just gone. to watch it burn -- >> reporter: homes and other buildings, swallowed by the flames. everything gone in just seconds. >> kind of devastated. it's overwhelming. >> reporter: the flames stretch from the fire near the getty center to the thomas fire in ventura county. exploding and expanding overnight. >> the fire just got way bigger. it's now on the freeway. >> reporter: if you are wondering if the eagles game is in jeopardy. it is not right now. the rams canceled the outdoor practice today because of air quality issues. the eagles have nothing to worry about right now. they are practicing about 30 miles south of los angeles in anaheim. reporting in huntington beach, steven fisher, nbc10 news. let's bring back in meteorologist tammie souza. >> you lived in southern california for much of your young life. you had your share of covering wildfires out there. tell us what they're in for. >> they're in for a nasty time. the winds will keep swirling. tonight it will be hard to breathe because the smoke settles down with the cold, clear, dry air. that's when the smoke is the thickest. that's why they were wearing masks. tomorrow the winds kick up again. this is an idea of where the winds are the strongest. the red and magenta colorations, those are winds of 60 miles an hour or greater. this is where the three main fires are. we are seeing drawing and strong winds picking up in parts of orange county toward laguna beach. the wildfire relative humidity right now is 37% in oxnard. not bad. los angeles, 22%. yesterday the were in the single digits. that's part of the problem, when it is exceptionally dry and you have all the wind whipping through. the setup is basically you end up with high pressure over the desert. all of the wind blows from that straight out over the ocean. as the wind blows down the mountains it picks up speed and that's what fuels the fires and makes them move at 50 or 60 miles an hour. look at this picture. this was me and my uncle mylan. behind us, his house lost in the witch creek fire. i had friends who lost houses as well. it's a sad situation. you can read my blog about to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct. another woman has come forward with accusations against the minnesota democrat and a dozen have called on him to step aside. his office said today he'll have an announcement on thursday. a top democrat tweeted he expects franken to resign tomorrow. a scare at a philadelphia elementary school after a student brought a loaded gun to school at general george mccall elementary in society hill. officials with the school district say police were called after the principal was informed that a student was in possession of the weapon. the school placed on lockdown briefly, and both the student and the gun were removed. no injuries were reported. police in five towns spanning three counties need help to stop a pair of men wanted for robbing game stops all over south jersey. in the video you will see only an nbc10, watch as the suspects send customers running. the security footage is from one of six armed holdups in recent weeks. they occurred in deptford, washington township. mount laurel. gloucester township and del ran. the crooks brandished knives and pointed guns at employees and patrons. >> last thing employees want to do is fight with individuals, especially with others in the store. they're coming in armed. just give them whatever they are asking so they can get out of the store as quickly as possible. >> police say employees did the right thing by allowing the suspects to take off with thousands in cash as well as xbox and play station consoles. we talked to customers who said they're concerned. that part of the story in coming up at 6:00. a warning for people shopping online. >> thieves are looking for packages left on your doorstep. troopers are offering this word of caution. protect your holiday purchases. have your packages delivered to your workplace instead. consider installing a security camera at your front door. and require a signature for delivery. they're often the silent victims of the opioid crisis. family members. today city officials including philadelphia mayor jim kenney held a round-table discussion with people directly impacted by drug addiction. officials weighed in on how the opioid epidemic is affecting the city's child welfare system, a jump in the number of families torn apart by the abuse. >> the crisis existing in philadelphia is happening in every single part of pennsylvania. >> the state auditor is visiting children and youth service agencies across the state to learn more about the challenges they face. across the river, candlelight vigil is aimed at that but that was shortly after midnight. then we fell into the upper 30s and low 40s and bottomed out at 40 degrees. no rain after midnight. the highest wind gust was 39 miles an hour earlier this dover at 42 as well. we are looking at a chilly night ahead. we are in the 40s, that's seasonal right now. we're going to drop much further. a pool of air has dropped down out of canada that will stay with us. the shades of pink are bad. notice on a weather map. shades of pink related to temperature, very bad. watch how this rotates around. the pinks and even a bit of a light whitish pink comes down. that is cold arctic air. it will be with us for a week. look at the time line. december 16th. the next ten days. these will be the temperatures at this time of the evening. ten days from now. we're going to be looking at the teens and low 20s across the area. we're going to get very cold air moving into the area after the initial push of cold air. right now the doppler radar is quiet. we have clouds drifting through the area and also the lake-effect snow machine which has turned on. you see it going full force across the great lakes with the cold air moving across the warmer lake waters. the cold front has move out across the atlantic to the east of us. it's parked off the east coast. here is what's going to happen. into the 30s tonight. 30 in reading. 34 in millville. 35 in toms river. poconos mid and upper 20s. by tomorrow afternoon we make it into the mid 40s in philadelphia. 41 in allentown. cooler than normal. and then we go into friday. well, on friday in the afternoon we are only going to make it to the upper 30s in philadelphia. mid 30s elsewhere. here comes a storm system riding up along the front that parked right off the east coast. it will bring a little bit of a rain/snow mix. light snow to southern delaware and new jersey and then it's out of here and saturday morning we start again. here comes another push from the storm system. we could see light snow in southern delaware, south jersey. philadelphia may be picking up a flurry or two. there is a little bit more off to the west of us. in fact, there are several more systems in the pipeline. how much snow are we talking about? not much of anything. look at this. it may be a dusting. places like cape may or southern delaware, you might actually get an inch or so of measurable snow. then it will probably melt away. the first of the season. >> 44 tomorrow. 39 on friday. snow showers south, a flurry possible in the evening. 39 on saturday. again, snow showers mainly south of philadelphia in delaware and south jersey but we could see flurries here. 38 on sunday. 44 on monday. let's go ahead and look at where we go from that because on tuesday another storm system comes in. this one is interesting. the models are conflicted. some bring the snow right into philadelphia. the entire area, tuesday night, wednesday, exiting on thursday. some of the other models keep it further south of us. notice the temperatures right in that range. nighttime lows in the 20s. daytime highs other side of the freezing mark. we will be cold enough. we just need the moisture. guys. it's a yearly event in norristown that brings police, kids and people together. people volunteered their time serving dinner to folks struggling with addiction and mental health issues. the event was of the magazine features ashley judd. taylor swift. susan fowler and others who say they've been harassed. many of the women who spoke out helped launch the #metoo movement with millions telling stories of sexual misconduct on social media into i could never have envisioned something that would change the world. i was trying to change my community. >> i thought, you know, if women can just come forward and say "me too," two beautiful words that tarana started, we can start to shape this and get an idea of the magnitude of this issue. >> "time's" person of the year issue hits newsstands coming up on friday. >> a group of bakers is suing the state of new jersey. they want to change a law that bans the sale of home-made baked goods without a license. the law was put in place over public health concerns. new jersey is the only state in the country with the ban. history is being made in north philadelphia. >> today project home broke ground on the city's first permanent housing development for lgbtq youth who are homeless or at risk. it will provide homes for 30 young people once construction is complete. >> there is still a lot of work to do. the opioid crisis will make that fight even more difficult. but today is an important step in making homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring. >> the new facility is named for gloria casarez, a pioneer in championing lgbtq causes in philadelphia. a new effort kicked off today to bring computer science studies to all city students in philadelphia. >> the initiative called cs 4 philly began this morning. students were given a short lesson on coding. the goal, to make sure philly's young people develop strong skills in technology. and we have a winner of the most festive vehicle in the septa fleet. the scooby doo decorated bus was given first prize. the buses are decorated every year with a holiday theme. eight of them. i was honored to be one of the judges. i have to say, pretty impressive. crews worked for weeks to get the wheels in the holiday spirit. >> yes. they were shooting at each other. >> reporter: investigators confirm an alleged gang member among those arrested and charged on last night's shooting on the expressway is the brother of the victim saturday night. pleasantville police are stepping up their presence in the community. >> there will be more visible and invisible patrols on the street. hopefully we'll get hold of this as quickly as possible before anyone else gets hurt. >> reporter: police tell me they are also working with several law enforcement partners to help crack down on the violence. live in pleasantville, ted greenberg, nbc10 news. former national security adviser mike flynn faces new allegations days after pleading guilty to lying to the fbi. nbc10 reports a whistle blower told congressional investigators flynn texted a former business associate during president trump's inaugural address. flynn allegedly said u.s. sanctions against russia would be immediately ripped up, making way for new nuclear power plants in the middle east. in partnership with russian interests. congressman elijah cummings is going to subpoena the white house for documents related to flynn. president trump's oldest son in the hot seat on capitol hill today. the house intelligence committee interviewed donald trump jr. as part of its investigation into russian interference in last year's election. they are interested in a meeting trump junior and other campaign officials held with russians last year. they also want to know about messages to trump junior exchanged with wikileaks. the website that leaked e-mails from top democratic officials during the campaign. new jersey's governor is endorsing a plan to cut retirement benefits for say the workers. governor christie discussed the state's pension plan today in trenton. he has long called for slashing retirement health benefits for state workers but the democratic led legislature has resisted. governor christie is hopeful the incoming governor will embrace the plan. >> i don't know politically given some of the position the governor-elect has taken, how he intends to deal with it. the great thing about this job is, once you get here, you have no alternative but than to be confronted with it. we will see how he reacts. >> governor-elect murphy proposed funding the pension plan in part by raising taxes on millionaires. fema workers who put in a lot of overtime earlier this year may not get all of their overtime pay. fema says an unprecedented hurricane season. 500 federal disaster workers are in danger of exceeding their cap. city employees may be barred from having or displaying certain symbols at work. today a city council committee held a public hearing on the matter. it stops workers from having hate symbols and materials in city owned or occupied facilities. philadelphia revenue is up while they are paying less for benefits, wages and overtime. the cities its year-end funds are more than $100 million over what was projected. the report also finds an improvement in homicide arrests. where people are finding a place to call home in new jersey according to the u.s. department of housing and urban development. homelessness is down by 4% across the state compared to last year. homelessness among families with children has dropped by 57%. since 2010. a local radio duo collected more than a million pounds of food for local families in need. wmmr radio hosts preston and steve camped out in the parking lot of xfinity live and collected food donations for nearly a week. tonight we learned the donations will provide more than two million meals to people in our area. take a look at this video of a robbery in south philadelphia. police say a guy stalked his victim on wilder street back on november 13th. when the victim got into a car, the robber walked up and pretended to have a gun in his pocket and demanded the victim's wallet. the suspect then ran off. no one was arrested. a look at stories making headlines. children in newcastle county. a group of teens robbing a woman at knife point. surveillance images of the suspects who are accused of threatening a woman outside a dollar tree store. the teens range in age from 8 to 16. in sussex county, delaware, a discoveries scientists made while searching remnants of a 17th century plantation. it included the graves of 11 people including the earliest known grave site of african-americans in delaware. archeologists say the discovery could provide new insight on the first people to call delaware home in the new world. praying they can stay in america. >> two local business owners face a deportation hearing this week. how they are turning to senator cory booker for help. details on the new study that's drawing a possible link between birth control pills and an elevated risk of breast cancer. that's next. new at 5:00. an immigrant family is praying for a miracle tonight.
