man online. >> "nbc10 news" starts now. did you feel it? a rare earthquake hit our region today. it didn't last long but caught many people off guard and rattled the nerves of people from new york to washington. good evening, i'm jacqueline london. >> the earthquake didn't cause any serious damage but had everyone talking. the 4.1 earthquake hit just before 5:00 today centered just north of dover, delaware. aaron baskerville shows us it was felt by people all across our region. >> reporter: in talking to two passengers here, they were 30 to 35 people inside the doors here at the time of the quake. it lasted around seven seconds, enough time to strike fear in some. >> as i was looking out this way, i started to see our church building start to sway. >> reporter: it was a familiar feeling for pastor joe jun. he's been through two quakes in seattle. but down the hall at antioch church of philadelphia, the same could not be said for pastor joe chung. >> i felt the entire room bouncing a little bit. the door frame seemed to get out of what can. >> reporter: this unsettling few seconds was centered near dover this afternoon. it was felt through several states and also captured on a size mo graph at holland middle school. >> it took really bad. it wasn't no little. it was a bad shake. >> reporter: charlie pyle claims he not only felt his house shaking in townsend, but it caused daniel to his walls. he sent nbc10 these photos saying he has five to six cracks and claims he noticed drywall dust on the floor shortly after it struck. >> like you weren't sure what was going on. and then boom, it was gone that quick. >> reporter: at antioch church. conshohocken there was immediate concern for 25 children down stairs in a daycare. they were fine. >> fear, that was the first emotion. i was fearing something was going to be like a big earthquake. >> reporter: of course, people will continue to check homes and businesses but so far, right now, no reports of major damage or injuries. in conshohocken, aaron baskerville. >> that's the good news right there. first alert chief meteorologist tammie souza joins us with what happened. >> it's unusual for this area. let's look at the facts. this was a shallow earthquake, three to four files deep which is why you could feel it at a greater distance. 175 miles out from the center is what people were feel. beyond that, not too much. it was a 4.1, and that is the strongest earthquake in delaware centered in delaware since 1871. only 58 earthquakes in delaware in the last 146 years. this 4.1 may be a record setter because back in 1871, they weren't quite sure, is it a 4.1, 3.8, that's a guesstimate. this was the strongest quake in the continental united states today which is remarkable when you consider all the western states, alaska surpassed us just a few hours ago with a 4.2 magnitude quake. definitely a very unusual event. something else we'll be watching along with the follow-up on this quake that took place is the rain moving through the area. dover getting a little bit of rain action through their area. we're watching it move through south jersey and southern parts of delaware. it should exit in the next hour or two. when i come back, i'll tell you what to expect for your weekend ahead. tonight, we're learning new details about the teenaged runway stabbed to death in a philadelphia alley and the man now charged with her murder. authorities say the two met online and as nbc10's brandon hudson reports, the suspect has had several run-ins with police. >> reporter: we learn this had 15-year-old girl was reported missing by her parents and never made it home. police say she met her 23-year-old killer online and he stabbed her more than 50 times, then tried to hide the body. >> extremely unfortunate given her age and what happened to her. >> reporter: philadelphia police captain jon ryan talking about the murder of sabriyah mclean found dead in an alley way tuesday. >> she was set on fire. >> reporter: she cole swear jer herring on social media. herring stabbed the teen in his apartment. sources say he later confessed to his parents. at this time, police are investigating what led to mclean's death. >> thanks to iphone, we can access the victim's phone and make a determination. >> reporter: mclean from new cas county was reported missing before. this photo of her is one police used during their search three years ago. she was later found safe. this isn't herring's first time in trouble. nbc10 searched court docketts and found the 23-year-old faced robbery, terrorististic threats, simple assault and reckless endangerment charges in 2012. four years later they arrested him for similar charges. the captain has a message for young people about this tale. >> all the young people that want to run the stwreets strangers it's a very dangerous world. >> reporter: brandon hudson, "nbc10 news." >> a drexel graduate is facing murder charges tonight after police say he shot a man. police say 24-year-old joseph howanski intervened in a fight between the man and his girlfriend and shot the man. she spoke to his former roommate who says he was generally a calm person. we reached out to police to learn how the situation escalated. they said rowancy did not know the couple but didn't release other information. a person was removed from hillary clinton's event at the kimmel center tonight the crowd booed, then cheered when the person was taken out. clinton is on a nationwide book tour "she talked about her failed campaign. the moments that still frustrate her but also the moments she will remember forever including a big one that happened right here in philadelphia. >> felt to stand on a stage right here in philadelphia to become the first woman top accept a major party nomination. >> reporter: her book titled "what happened" is in stores now. a day after he was fired by nbc news, matt lauer is facing accusations of sexual misconduct by as many as six what is being said about me untrue or mischaracterized but there is truth to make me feel embarrass and ashamed." his first public comments come on the heels of new accusations. at least three people garcia zarate was accused of killing kathryn steinle. she died after she was shot walking along a pier in san francisco. president trump often cited this case as an example of why stronger immigration laws are needed. he had been deported five times and wanted for a sixth deportation when she was killed. president trump's called the verdict disgraceful. >> a man accused of leaving threatening signs and burned items is behind a mosque on south 69th street. this is surveillance video. the signs include references to the devil and killing. the suspect is accused of leaving threatening signs at educational center. >> police in bucks county say they have the truck involved in a hit and run that killed a 19-year-old girl and hurt her boyfriend. this is exclusive video of the truck. police have identified a person of interest in the investigation. 19-year-old jess kurtz and her boyfriend were crossing the street monday night when they were hit. kurtz died in that crash. >> up next this happy all together today and get the band back on his finger. >> the nfl and its players have reaped a deal to put tens of millions of dollars towards promoting social justice. the deal calls for the nfl and its teams to commit up to $100 million to social causes in african-american communities. eagles safety malcolm jenkins has been at the forefront of the player's coalition push for change. he says dover where the quake took place earlier today at 4:47 this afternoon. showers exiting south jersey and the southern portions of delaware. if you're in atlantic city is, ship bottom, sea isle, don't worry. probably another hour they'll be out to sae. look at all the clearing off to the west. this front came through quickly. behind it very dry and much cooler air. we're not talking about a big chill tomorrow. we're talking about seasonal temperatures. so as the front fully comes through the area, this is how things will work out hour by hour. we're going to drop to the 40s when you wake up tomorrow morning, you'll be in the low 40s. we'll see 30s in the outlying areas. all in all, clear skies. lots of sunshine tomorrow. we'll be in the low perhaps mid 50s in philadelphia. outlying areas upper 40s and low 50s. once we get into the tomorrow evening we're going to be looking at temperatures that are probably going to hang onto the 40s but after midnight, we're going to start to drop quickly and we'll see about 32 on saturday morning in philadelphia. some clouds will move in on saturday. >> i think we're going to call it a mix of sun and clouds for saturday. it will still be a seasonal day. close to 50 degrees in the city. outlying areas upper 40s. that will be the coolest of the days over the weekend. the clouds clear out for your sunday. 9:30 in the morning nut upper 30s and low 40s. headed into the low 50s across the area. it thud be pleasant. look at the sunshine off to the west. that means we'll go go into monday sunny, as well. something you can take advantage of tomorrow night is the tree lighting ceremony. our good friends from the morning show tracy and jessica and bill will be out there. temperatures going to cooperate. we'll be in the low 40s. we should have clear skies with light winds. so your neighborhood forecast for tonight includes 43 in philadelphia, 38 in the pennsylvania suburbs and lehigh valley, 44 on the jersey shore. for tomorrow, we'll see sunshine out there. we'll see 54 in philadelphia it, 50 in the lehigh valley, 54 along the jersey shore. big change at the end of the ten days. but prior to that, we're seasonal. 54 tomorrow, 50
