>> nba star gordon hayward's first interview since that gruesome ankle injury in the season's first game. >> have you seen the video? >> this morning, the emotional impact it's had on him, and what it'll take to get back on the court. all that plus the chilling moment a kidnapped woman escapes from the trunk of a car. amanda knox opening up on the tenth anniversary of her roommate's murder. and -- >> the houston astros are world champions. >> the astros hammer the dodgers to win their first ever world series title. giving houston, after a long, hard year, reason to celebrate today, thursday, november 2nd, 2017. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. morning, everybody. welcome to "today." nice to have you with us on this thursday morning. >> if there is a city that deserves to win a championship after the year they've had, it's the city of houston. congratulations to the astros. we'll have much more on the game and the celebration coming up in a little while. >> we're happy for them. we have breaking news this morning. a gunman walking into a denver area walmart and opening fire on an unsuspecting group of shoppers. nbc's joe fryer has been the very latest. joe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a day after the deadly terror attack in new york city, the denver area community is on edge this morning with an armed suspect on the run. police believe the man is still carrying the weapon he used to kill three people. right now, there is a desperate search to find him. this morning, a manhunt is underway just outside of denver as police search for a gunman who walked into a walmart wednesday and opened fire, killing three people. authorities say the gunman, wearing a jacket, blue jeans and a maroon shirt, carried a handgun into the denver suburb of thorton and began randomly shooting at customers. >> we don't know the motive of the person, but it was certainly a terrible act. >> reporter: authorities say two men were killed at the store and a woman who was taken to a nearby hospital later died of her injuries. >> i saw one guy laying on the ground, and people were, you know, helping him sit up or lay down. it was pretty dramatic, looking at that. >> reporter: as the shots rang out, customers started running frantically for their lives. >> my first reaction was to make sure i knew where the exit was and i could get out fast enough and make sure my brother was okay. >> reporter: the incident coming one day after the deadly terror attack in new york city. >> i was -- scared. i was scared. with everything that's going on in the world and everything, it's kind of freaking me out. >> reporter: as the search for the gunman intensifies, police say they do not know whether this attack is terror related but, so far, there is no indication of anyone claiming responsibility. savannah and matt? >> joe fryer with the breaking news. thank you. also this morning, we have new information on the tragic terror attack here in new york city. the suspect accused of plowing a truck into people on a bike lane in lower manhattan made his first cowurt appearance late lat night. according to the criminal complaint, sayfullo saipov told investigators he felt good about the attack and picked halloween, assuming more people would be on the streets. the fbi is questioning a second man who has been in contact with the suspect in recent weeks. we have complete coverage. we'll talk about the investigation with nypd commissioner james o'neill in a moment. let's begin with jah dgadi schw >> reporter: investigators learning how much planning went into this attack. sayfullo saipov had rented this truck before. that he had come here, scouted out this location. he had practiced making turns in this truck. he had knives in that truck that he was unable to reach after the crash. most disturbing of all, he may have been boasting while eight families were in mourning. this morning, disturbing new details about sayfullo saipov, the suspected terrorist, appearing in court, handcuffed and shackled in a wheelchair. the 29-year-old facing charges including support for terrorism. >> he committed this attack in support of isis. >> reporter: according to a criminal complaint, saipov said his goal was to run along people along new york city's busy west side highway and head over to the brooklyn bridge for more victims. choosing halloween to kill as many people as he could. telling investigators he felt good about what he'd done. this video shows what happened after he rammed the truck into a school bus, trapping special needs kids inside. >> he was inspired to commit the attack by the isis videos he watched and had been planning this attack for two months. >> reporter: investigators say his two cell phones were filled with violent isis propaganda videos, including beheadings, and he allegedly wanted to drape isis flags at the front and back of the truck during the attack, but according to the fbi, decided against it because he didn't want to draw attention to himself. the complaint also says he even request eed to display an isis flag in his hospital room. officer ryan nash who ended the attack by shooting saipov speaking for the first time. >> i feel we were doing our job, like thousands of officers do every day, i understand the importance of yesterday's events and the role we played and i'm grateful for the recognition. >> reporter: throughout new york city overnight, tributes poured in for the victims. now, we're also learning more about the eight people who lost their lives. including two americans. 23-year-old nicholas cleves and darren drake. drake's father, devastated. >> he had everything. everything. >> reporter: also killed in tuesday's tragedy, five friends visiting from argentina, who traveled to new york to celebrate their 30th high school reunion. this video shows the men riding bikes along the path just minutes before the attack. decad decadt, a belgium mother of two, struck down. her husband saying the loss is unbearable. last night, the fbi was looking for a man from uzbekistan, an associate of saipov. they found him and are interviewing him but are still asking the public for information they have. back to you. >> thank you very much. we're joined by the commissioner of the new york city police department. good morning. we appreciate you taking time and being here. >> thanks for coming in. >> your officers are questioning this uzbek man. there's also been reporting that perhaps the suspect had been taking drives in a truck similar to the one used with other people. where's the thinking right now in terms of whether he acted alone, who else you want to talk to? >> we're not two days into the investigation, so this is all part of the investigation as we go forward here. joint terrorist task force people do a terrific job. they talked to this man last night. we'll see as we go down the road, if he acted alone or if he had some help. >> still an open question? >> yeah, it is. this is less than two days. this is an ongoing investigation. >> his wife cooperating? >> i don't want to go into what she's talking about. you know, it's part of -- unfortunately, when events like this happen, it's what we do. we talk to families. we talk to acquaintances. we go down that road as far as possible to make sure we see who was involved. >> it's alarming when we hear -- have you, by the way, been present during any of the questioning of the suspect in the hospital? >> no, no. the people in the joint terrorist task force, the fbi, nypd detectives, they're experts at this. >> when you hear that this guy thought about putting the isis flag on the front and back of his truck so that he could advertise as he was committing this horrible act, and he perhaps wanted to hang an isis flag in his hospital room, to show how proud he was of what he's done, how do you defend people against a warped mindset like that? >> everybody has to understand, this is who we're dealing with. law enforcement does a terrific job. nypd officers every day, the cops, but this is going to take all 8.5 million people in new york city to pay attention to what's going on around them. map take off your headphones. stop looking at your phone. see what's going on around you. if you see something that makes you uncomfortable, something that doesn't look right, not just that you should call, i think you have an obligation to call. give us the opportunity to investigation the threat. that's how we're going to move forward and keep this city safe. >> there's been reporting that he was remorseless, smug, wanted to hang this isis flag. is that true? >> i wasn't in the room for these discussions. if it is true, again, this just shows everybody in new york and everybody in this country who we're dealing with here. >> let me ask you also, it's been reported that there were some 4,000 isis-related images found on his phone. about 90 isis-related propaganda videos. it is hard to track down a lone wolf, but should that level of interest in isis online have triggered some alert? is there a system in place that would have worked there? >> that's part of what we're going to look at here. every time there is an incident, we have to learn from it. we have to evolve and see what we can do better. it is too early to say that. >> finally, i have to ask, the president has been tweeting about this. one thing he said is he believes and hopes the suspect will get the death penalty. he called our justice system a joke and laughingstock. >> in new york city, it is not a joke. look where we are as a city. homicides and shootings are down. overall crime is down. it doesn't happen by accident. hard work by everybody involved in the criminal justice system. >> officer ryan nash who stopped the attack by shooting the terror suspect, does he have any idea how big he came up in that moment? >> i think he's starting to realize it. i spoke to him on the day of the incident. him and his partner and officer wilson and mcginn. they were on an unrelated call. someone said there was a school bus accident outside. they had no idea what they were about to face. all four of them did a terrific job. the men and women of the nypd do it each and every day. >> saved a lot of people, i think. >> sure did. >> commissioner, thank you very much for your time. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. this is the first major isis-inspired attack in the u.s. since president trump took office. as we just mentioned, he's using it to blast the justice system and double down on his call for stricter immigration laws. nbc white house correspondent kristen welker has more on that part of the story. kristen, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning the to you. that's right. this morning, president trump is seizing on the new york attack to talk tough on two key issues, immigration and terror. mr. trump is calling for the death penalty, as you were discussing, and even saying he's considering sending the suspect to guantanamo bay. he is also getting some criticism with some democrats, accusing him of politicizing a moment that should be unifying. this morning, with sayfullo saipov facing new charges, president trump vowing swift action. >> that was a horrible event. we also have to come up with punishment that's far quicker and far greater. because what we have right now is a joke and it's a laughi laughingstock. >> reporter: the white house calling saipov an enemy combatant. mr. trump saying the terror suspect should get the death penalty. earlier, referring to him as this animal. saying he is open to sending him to the military prison as gaughuantanamo bay. >> i would consider that. >> reporter: mr. trump pushing congress to dismantle the visa lottery program, which allowed the suspect into the united states from uzbekistan in 2010. >> sounds liknice. it is not nice. it is not good. >> reporter: the program randomly selects applicants from countries with low economic rates. >> we need strength ask nd reso. we need to stop it. >> reporter: senator schumer initially supported the law but, in 2013, backed a bipartisan bill to scrap it and, wednesday, fired back at the president. >> this is a tragedy. it's less than a day than after it occurred, and he can't refrain from his nasty, divisive habits. >> reporter: and two big announcements unrelated to the terror attack expected today. republicans will unveil their tax bill on capitol hill. and president trump will announce his pick to replace janet yellen as the next fed chair. the president is expected to pick the current fed governor, jerome powell, for the position. the move is seen as stabilizing since powell's views are seen as being in line with yellen's. >> kristen welker at the white house. thank you. now to an nbc news exclusive. this week, top executives from facebook, twitter and google are facing tough questions on capitol hill about social media's role in russia's interference with the election. when nbc's lester holt sat down with apple ceo tim cook, he said the tech giants have a much bigger problem on their hands. lester is with us now. good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, good morning. i'm at an apple store. this time tomorrow, many of the displays around me will include the new iphone x. it is a phone that will know more about you and, according to apple, do more for you than previous iphones. its release is coming at a time the entire tech industry is under a new level of scrutiny. keyti executives from google, facebook and twitter were on capitol hill, admitting they hasn't done enough to protect america from russian meddling in the 2016 election. >> we could have been more. >> we need to do more. >> same is true. >> reporter: i asked apple ceo tim cook to comment on their role. do you think the social media companies have been a little late to acknowledge how they were used by those who tried to influence the election, russians? >> i don't believe the big issue are as from foreign governments. the key issue, in my opinion, is that these tools that are meant to unite us are being used to divide us. >> reporter: his comments come as apple is about to release the new iphone x, that includes a new facial recognition id feature. so this phone, if this is my phone, it's looking at just my m a image? >> your image and different characteristics of your face. and your face can change over time. you might grow a beard. it'll detect that. >> reporter: you have nurtured a device that can unlock my home, can tell what my blood pressure is, can take a picture of my face. raises a lot of privacy concerns. how do you respond to those? >> our review, in this area and so many other areas, is that privacy is a really key issue of our time. with the things that technology can do. >> reporter: you took a stand on that, notably, after the san bernardino shooting, in terms of information the authorities wanted to glean off that phone. >> the government asked us -- or demanded that we invent a new operating system without security parameters in it that could enable them to unlock not just that phone, frankly, but hundreds of millions of phones. >> reporter: making things better is part of what apple sees as its corporate citizenship, including advocating for coding in schools. >> i honestly believe that coding should be a requirement in all schools. >> reporter: and taking a stand on issues beyond technology, like climate change and immigration d.r.e.a.m.ers. >> these folks came to the u.s. when they were children. we felt it was very important for us to stand up for them. you should stand up for people without a voice. >> reporter: some have raised prooif privacy concerns with the iphone x. it is happening on the phone itself. not being kept on a server somewhere else. apple says it is all happening here in the device, which goes on sale tomorrow. >> lester up early with a new phone. a lot more on this conversation, of course, with tim cook, contin tonight on nbc nightly news. the world series, congrats to the houston astros, winning their first championship in franchise history. the astros beat the la dodgers, game seven last night. houston was up 3-0 in the second, when centerfielder george springer blasted a two-run shot over the wall. you know what? >> the biggest shot in cavs history. >> going up -- oh, my goodness. hayward came down so hard. >> i remember having a step on my defender. he was kind of behind me, under me a little bit, and then lebron kind of came over at the last second. there were three people in the air trying to get the ball. there is a sense in the air, where you feel like you're off balance and you know you're going to come down hard. i've had that feeling before. for the most part, i'm able to kind of adjust. for this instance, my foot was caught and there was nothing i could do. all of a sudden, it hit me. it was like immense pain coming through. it felt like forever before the doctors and the trainers ran over. it just felt like, for a moment there, i'm just looking at it and it's just like, you know -- that's when i grabbed my head like, oh, no, this is not good. then when they finally popped it back into place, it hurt. when they were carting me out, that's when it hit me emotionally, like i got this e wave of emotion, like am i done? is this my career? is this over? >> have you seen the video? >> i've seen it, yeah. >> have you seen the shots of the people in the crowd? >> yeah. i've seen some of them. like how everyone cringes a little bit and they don't want to look. >> other players were praying. >> i've seen that, too, which is pretty cool to see, for sure. >> i read that your parents were there. >> mm-hmm. >> i can't even imagine what it must have been like to be your parents watching what was happening to their son on the floor. >> yeah. i mean, it's -- as a parent, you don't want your child to go through that. as a parent myself, it's like, thinking, i would rather take their pain. you know, and this is where it makes me emotional, because -- like i wouldn't want my kids to go through that. sorry. >> it's okay. >> i remember seeing my mom, and it was -- she's crying. like that's just tough. it's tough. tough to see your parents cry, too, because it make s you emotional. we went back to the locker room and took x-rays. that's where they said, you have a broken ankle. >> when you're sitting back in the room and the ice is all over you, they've told you you have a broken ankle, you know the season is done. >> mm-hmm. >> what's that like to digest? >> that was tough. that's when, you know, robin calls and i'm talking to robin. she's trying to support me. says she wished she was there. god doesn't give you a challenge you can't handle. i think having the two little ones will really help me. they give you a little perspective because they don't know what's going on. they just know daddy has a boo boo. they like to decorate it with stickers. they like to give it a hug and a kiss because that's what we do when they get boo boos. >> what do you want to learn through this experience? >> you know, i did. i thought, wow. maybe i zigged when i should have zagged. yeah, i thaugought about it a l but i also thought about the heros that i have known, and the benefit of having served in the company of heros. i am the luckiest guy you will ever talk to. i promise you. >> does that memory ever fade for you? is it there constantly, or can you park it somewhere? >> you know, it doesn't fade, but i have parked it. in life, we have to go on, you know. put it behind us and be grateful. >> do you think we're more divided now than we were then? >> no. i think we were more divided then because we were talking about body bags. it was a period of real upheaval in our history. all of it with the back drop of these brave, young people who were over there serving and sacrificing. >> whenever i go across america, inevitably, someone will say to me, are we really okay? >> i hear that, as well. and we are going through a period of turmoil politically, obviously. we are seeing, in many ways, the 1930s. the isolationism, america firsters. maybe some of the causes are different, but the fact is, we are seeing the united states become much more insular and inward. >> if the president called you up and said, what should i be doing that i'm not doing right now, what would you say to him? >> stop tweeting. i think i'd say stop tweeting. i'd also say, look, there is no reason to attack republicans. we have enough people who attack. >> in the course of your political career, especially as a presidential candidate, you had mixed relations with the press. the president has no use for the press. he turned the country against us, in many ways. >> yeah. i think the role of the press is more important than ever before. i hate the press. okay? but the fact is, without a free press, in this country, the pillar of democracy is destroyed. >> in the senate and your private life, as well, you've had friends on both sides of the aisle. that doesn't happen anymore. is that a key to getting the country back on an even keel? >> you know, the guys i fought with is and worked with almost more than anybody in the united states senate was one ed caward kennedy. he and i would yell at each other. we'd fight. we'd walk off and he'd put his arm around me and say, we did pretty good, didn't we? that's the kind of relationship you have to have. we did a lot of legislation together. >> have you loved your life, john? >> oh, yeah. i've loved my life. i can't tell you, for 60 years now, i've had the great honor of being involved in the arena. i've loved every minute of it. the disappointments, ups, downs, wins, losses. but no one has had the wonderful life that i've had. no one. >> and there have been so many john mccain lives. he is now a senior statesman. it is worth going on google to read the speech to the naval academy because it is forewarning for the cadets and the rest of the country about where we are and what we ought to be thinking about. >> how does he seem like he is doing, to you? >> look, it's a very tough cancer. it is a very difficult cancer. he is getting great care at the mayo clinic in arizona. at the same time, he is a realist and knows what he is up to. i think that's why we're seeing so much candor from him and why he wants to, at this stage in his life, to raise his hand and say, i'm not going to be politically correct anymore. by the way, the two of us used to have a very close, but appropriate, relationship. then as it did with a lot of members of the press, it went to hell when he was running against obama. we reconciled last summer. his initiative, he said, you know, i was wrong. we have to get back together again. we'll always be reporter and politician, but at the same time, i have an enormous personal affection for him. >> another thing worth watching is that video after he was captured. a lot of people put it out there online after this anniversary, to watch that. >> if i can say one thing, i stood at the edge of the lake where he went in, and i got emotional. thinking about he gets shot down, drops into the lake, they all go in and try to kill him right there, and he pulls out there and he's got every bone broken in his body. then he goes into solitary c confineme confinement. >> amazing story. thank you very much. >> appreciate it. let's turn now to our ongoing series brainpower. today, maria, this is something you're looking at, a new, innovative test to detect alzheimer's before the symptoms occ occur, right? >> most people think alzheimer's is just an old person's disease, but it is not. doctors now say warning signs can start appearing in the body decades earlier. when lifestyle changes may make a big difference. that's why they're pushing for more early testing and developing new ways to detect the disease before it is too late. >> how are you feeling? >> like most family doctors, carolyn screens her older patients for signs of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. >> we're going to do a quick memory test. >> unlike many, she also screens their brains. looking for the earliest warnings of alzheimer's. >> it's very important to screen for cognitive decline early, before there are symptoms, so we can try to implement what we know will help slower the progression. >> today, 5.5 million americans suffer from alzheimer's. when detected early, research suggests lifestyle changes, like intensive exercise, a brain and heart healthy diet, and better sleep, may delay symptoms. but many doctors still don't screen for the early indicators of alzheimer's. physicians miss signs of cognitive impairment in over 40% of patients, and over half of people diagnosed with dementia had never been tested before. >> we have to be able to detect the disease. >> neurologist keith black sees it all the time. so many people come to me and say, you know, my mom or dad was going to the doctor for five or ten years. they said, you have stress. lo and behold, it was alzheimer's. >> just like the key is with high blood pressure, diabetes, treat it before it causes damage. be able to identify it in its asymptomatic phase and preserve the brain cells. >> decades before most patients are diagnosed, he says, alzheimer's is causing changes in the brain, like the buildup of toxic proteins. detecting them now requires extensive and invasive scans. >> this is the picture of the back of the eye. >> in his published research, dr. black found those same plaques built up in the eyes of people at risk for alzheimer's. >> look straight ahead. >> he's developed a retinal scan, still experimental, that one day could detect this warning sign early. what's your vision, five, ten years from now? >> we wanted to do a tasting. i do this tasting party. it's like one of the things when you're actually, you know, thinking of something to do that's fun and different, tastings are always great to talk about. >> right. >> so i actually love doing tastings. then your wonderful producer was like, let's do a coffee tasting. i said, great, it sounds awesome. >> are we going to do it? >> ethiopia, brazil, columbia and myanmar. >> you have friends over and you're like -- well, mine may be a wine tasting or something. >> i would prefer a wine tasting, but at 8:00 in the morning -- >> actually, on this show, it'd be perfectly fine. >> there's still notes in this. the one you had is cranberry. you taste it? >> i taste just a note. >> you tasted a note. >> perhaps a suggestion or hint. >> i'm doing ethiopia. i'm supposed to -- there's supposed to be peach. >> that's tough. >> i taste no peach. >> okay. >> but i can taste a little vanilla. how is the brazilian? >> i'll try it. >> it'll have hazelnut. >> yeah. well, i mean -- >> do you taste it? >> i was about to be like, hazelnut, that's the most hazelnutty thing ever. but this is what i like about it, it seems like you and your family, you like to create memories. like let's make something fun. is that something that you feel you inherited from your mom and dad? >> yeah. yeah. i think that they, you know -- they kind of -- there's no other place that we'd rather be than home and with our family. we have a lot of fun together. and a lot of that is based in the traditions and what kind of home that they created and how that passed down to me and my brother -- all my brothers. and, yeah, i think when you create those kinds of traditions, there's certain notes that you continue to experience throughout your life, whether it is the smell of a kitchen that's always cooking something, whether it's the way that mom lights her candles around the house. all of these little things that create an environment where you just feel super cozy and at home. our life is all about connecting. >> yes. >> it's open door kind of policy in our house. we were always the go-to house growing up. now my house is kind of the go-to house. i think you do have to create that environment to get that kind of experience. >> i mean, you wanted the intentional about making traditions and making memories. are there things you're doing with your kids, your boys, that you're like, okay, i'm consciously trying to make this a thing? >> we do dinners. we do like a little bit more in-depth family dinners than -- i think when you're super busy, working, single mom of two, you have a lot going on, those nights where you go a little bit extra to make it really nice for just you and the kids, i think that goes a really long way for your children. they really remember those nights. if you forget them one week, you know, it's the first thing i'll hear about. mom, we didn't do our family dinner this week. you know what i mean?
