5:30. city in morning. new details right now about the investigation into the las vegas massacre. police say they found 23 weapons in the hotel room where that lone gunman shot into the festival. they discovered another 19 at stephen paddock's home. he took his own life before police got to him. 59 people died. the gunfire injured 527. new this morning, among the victims is this youth wrestling coach from shippensburg, pennsylvania. the wrestling team's facebook page posted that bill wolfe was at the concert with his wife celebrating their wedding anniversary. family and friends don't know where he is or if he survived. the posting said his wife is okay. this is what the festival ground look like a day after the shooting. there is generosity in the midst of tragedy. a fundraiser for the victims has raised nearly $3 million. we have live coverage this morning. katy zachry live on the ben franklin parkway with a look at how philadelphia prepares for massive outdoor events like the one targeted in las vegas. we start with matt delucia, though, live in las vegas this morning. matt, you lived and worked in the community. you have friends there. vegas must still be in a state of shock. >> reporter: this is a 24-hour town. people are always out having fun, partying, gambling. this part of las vegas boulevard is still shut down. eerie sight right now. while the town may be known for gambling, it is shining for a town that is coming together. we have people laying candles, flowers, balloons, and messages. a few feet away from the crime scene. we got a chance last night to see how folks were paying respects and also disbelief that this could happen in the way that it happened. tourists come to have fun. some were here over the -- some who were here offered went said it was an entirely different mood. >> it's supposed to be a city of partying. it doesn't seem like it today. >> i can see this happening in virtually any community, in virtually any city, philadelphia, new york, chicago, los angeles, san diego. it was just really sad that it happened here. again, it could happen anywhere. >> reporter: again, this is the live look at the crime scene along las vegas boulevard. this is the strip. normally packed with people. it was sunday night that the shooter started firing from the 32nd floor from the mandalay bay where we are now. one of the big themes is kindness. the flight attendant said they had friends who had gone to the concert and didn't know if they had gotten out safely. they didn't find out until halfway through the flight that they did make it out okay. that uncertainty is still playing out for a lot of other families this morning. live in las vegas, matt delucia. we're learning about the 59 people killed, and there are stories of tragedy and heroism. 29-year-old sonny melton, a nurse, died saving his wife. heather melton said that's when the -- when the bullets were fired, he grabbed her and ran, protecting him was his last act. he was shot in the back and killed. heather melton describes her husband as a kind-hearted, loving man. among the dead, teachers, college students, parents, children. the family and friends are sharing stories and heartbreak. >> i loved quinton. he was a very popular kid around school and around town. >> kind, loving person that everybody liked a lot. >> a witness said off-duty officers in the crowd used themselves as human shields, protecting people from the bullets. the question this morning is why. investigators are trying to figure out the shooter's motive as we learn more about who he is. stephen paddock took his own life. he was 64 years old. paddock had no criminal record. nbc news reports that he had a history of running up large gambling debts. he gambled large amounts at las vegas casinos recently. the gunman turned his hotel room on the 32nd floor into a sniper's perch is an unobstructed view of the thousands below. paddock's brother said his family and friends are in shock. >> we have no reason, rhyme, rationale, excuse. there's just nothing. >> we've also learned the owner of a utah gun store said paddock visited several times this year and bought a shotgun after passing a federal breck. the -- background check. hours after the shooting, the white house said this is not the appropriate time for gun-control debate. both sides are talking about the issue. >> it would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don't fully know all the facts or what took place last night. >> if we don't act now, when will we? >> the nation's counting on you. >> two of the main sticking points about gun control are mandatory federal background checks and mental health regulations. and here at home, our weapons laws are toughest in new jersey. they include an assault weapon ban, a firearms registry, and a magazine capacity restriction. you also can't buy any parts to make an assault weapon. pennsylvania does require a permit to carry a firearm, but only in a city with more than one million people. so only philadelphia qualifies. delaware has the most lax gun laws in the state, in the tri-state. it has no magazine capacity restriction and no firearm registry. 5:36. philadelphia police say they plan to learn from the tragedy in las vegas. because the city often hosts big outdoor events, they already have security measures in place. nbc10's katy zachry joins us live from the ben franklin parkway. what are the security measures that police talk about? >> reporter: philadelphia police have detailed for us the security levels that they have in place for every big event the city hosts. many of them happen here along the ben franklin parkway. for those events like the big concerts or the papal visit, here is what they do. they have plain clothes officers in the crowds scanning, looking for any threats. they have s.w.a.t. officers stationed on higher ground. you'll often see police helicopters scanning rooftops. and blowout gates can be opened at a moment's notice to let the flood of people rush out. with these measures and more in place, some people tell us they still don't feel safe at large gatherings. >> i think nowhere is prepared for that type of situation. that's something we shouldn't have to prepare for, i feel like. it's really scary. i have a son, so it's like what did i bring him into, and he won't be able to do a lot of things that i got do when i was younger. i don't want to bring him out. i don't want to be around a group of people. you never know what could happen. >> reporter: this morning we are calling some of the big hotels located in philadelphia to find out if they're changing any of their security practices in light of this deadly shooting. we'll have an update coming up at 6:00. reporting live along the parkway, katy zachry, nbc10 news. philadelphia's ben franklin parkway like the vegas strip is surrounded by highrise hotels. we talked to a hospitality consultant who told us there isn't any way to keep hotel guests from bringing weapons. he says there are other things hotel workers can look for starting with baggage. >> if you have a heavy amount of bags and you're only staying for a few nights and you're by yourself, that for me is the main red flag. >> you don't rely on hotel workers to try and be your eyes and ears for your safety? can they wait? there's a tag system that's used. >> he said doctors will use the vegas situation as a teaching tool in the future looking at what worked and what did not. this morning we woke up to the news of another deadly shooting, in time in las vegas. we need to remember that good still exists in this world. we're here to entertain you tonight, and that's what we're going to do. >> late-night comedy shows took a much-different tone last night. "tonight show" host jimmy fallon opened up his show without the traditional monologue. and then two of his guests joined for a special duet. ♪ ♪ no freedom without love >> that is miley cyrus and adam sandler covering the song "no freedom." after the show, cyrus posted on instagram that the lyrics are especially important now in remembering the lives lost. host jimmy kimmel fought back tears as he opened his show last night. >> here we are again in the aftermath of another terrible, inexplicable, shocking and painful tragedy. this time in las vegas which happens to be my hometown. cl clio's hometown, clio sr.'s hometown. >> he said that something must be done to curb gun violence. he called out president trump, mitch mcconnell, and paul ryan for letting "the gun lobby run this country." we'll start with a look at neighborhood temperatures this morning. another chilly start out there. again, it will be another mild afternoon. glasgow, 48. marshall ton at 48 degrees. current temps, once the sun picks up, temperatures will pick up, too. farther south, 45 in lincoln. millsboro, alan dale, 46. then rehoboth beach and dewey beach, much better off. 64 finish the current reading. a big difference. along the jersey shore, 51. galloway township at 44 degrees. we've got temperatures for many along the shore near the 40s. temperatures rising to the upper 60s later today the. if you spot -- today. if you spot the water temperature, it helps influence the morning lows and afternoon highs. radar and satellite view, this is a nice, tight view of the area. from allentown down to sussex county and from ocean county all the way over to chester county, looking at just dry conditions. no rain. you don't need the umbrella or boots. nice and dry throughout. we go through the tuesday timeline to 7:00 in the evening. all we've got is a chance of scattered clouds. we go from tuesday into wednesday. more cloud coverage along the northern edge. i think these will be short-lived. they break once the sun heats us up. mostly sunny for your wednesday. even thursday, this is thursday morning. mostly sunny conditions. we could see scattered clouds, though, picking up by the afternoon. the next three days, we're looking dry. no rain in the forecast. we do see the temperatures start to rise. that's tanks to high pressure building over us. 76 today, 80 on wednesday. thursday up to 82 degrees. so while the humidity is low, that summer-esque feel returns. 74 to 79 in the suburbs. that's the same for the lehigh valley, near berks county, near 80 by thursday, as well. sunny conditions, scattered clouds. in new jersey, 74 today. sunny wednesday, mostly sunny thursday, up to 81 degrees. even at the shore, we see a rise in temperatures. once we have a southwest flow, warmer air could move in. about 76 by your thursday. in delaware, 74 tuesday. 79 wednesday. and thursday up to 81 degrees. we'll stay in the low 80s possibly right on into the weekend. how about for the eagles forecast? >> i think, first, we shouldn't wait for our kids to ask. we need to be active and say -- or ask them, you know, what are kids at school talking about? about las vegas? to introduce the conversation. many children, you know, don't want to talk about upsetting things or don't want to upset their parents. but i think the most important thing that we can tell our children, particularly kids 8 and over where it's going to be discussed in school, is that this is unique. this is unusual. not to expect that this is the norm. though it may feel like that way due to the news cycle. >> yeah. >> doctor, if your child has -- has a problem understanding anyway, the level of understanding is not quite there, then you should probably, what, limit their -- how much time they're watching on television and how much they're participating in social media, which you should do anyway, right?
