>> the nation's counting on you. >> two of the main sticking points about gun control are mandatory federal background checks and mental health regulations. and here at home, our weapons laws are toughest in new jersey. they include an assault weapon ban, a firearms registry, and a magazine capacity restriction. you also can't buy any parts to make an assault weapon. pennsylvania does require a permit to carry a firearm, but only in a city with more than one million people. so only philadelphia qualifies. delaware has the most lax gun laws in the state, in the tri-state. it has no magazine capacity restriction and no firearm registry. 5:36. philadelphia police say they plan to learn from the tragedy in las vegas. because the city often hosts big outdoor events, they already have security measures in place. nbc10's katy zachry joins us live from the ben franklin parkway. what are the security measures that police talk about? >> reporter: philadelphia police have detailed for us the security levels that they have in place for every big event the city hosts. many of them happen here along the ben franklin parkway. for those events like the big concerts or the papal visit, here is what they do. they have plain clothes officers in the crowds scanning, looking for any threats. they have s.w.a.t. officers stationed on higher ground. you'll often see police helicopters scanning rooftops. and blowout gates can be opened at a moment's notice to let the flood of people rush out. with these measures and more in place, some people tell us they still don't feel safe at large gatherings. >> i think nowhere is prepared for that type of situation. that's something we shouldn't have to prepare for, i feel like. it's really scary. i have a son, so it's like what did i bring him into, and he won't be able to do a lot of things that i got do when i was younger. i don't want to bring him out. i don't want to be around a group of people. you never know what could happen. >> reporter: this morning we are calling some of the big hotels located in philadelphia to find out if they're changing any of their security practices in light of this deadly shooting. we'll have an update coming up at 6:00. reporting live along the parkway, katy zachry, nbc10 news. philadelphia's ben franklin parkway like the vegas strip is surrounded by highrise hotels. we talked to a hospitality consultant who told us there isn't any way to keep hotel guests from bringing weapons. he says there are other things hotel workers can look for starting with baggage. >> if you have a heavy amount of bags and you're only staying for a few nights and you're by yourself, that for me is the main red flag. >> you don't rely on hotel workers to try and be your eyes and ears for your safety? >> no, i don't. >> the stult ant told us -- consultant told us talking to guests is always best for securities. watch a special edition of the "today" show. savannah guthrie will be joined by lester holt reporting on the victims and shooting from las vegas. and live coverage continues throughout the day. matt delucia will have the latest at 11:00 a.m. and jacqueline london leads our las vegas coverage this evening, this afternoon starting at 4:00. breaking news from overnight. classic rock legend tom petty has died. ♪ i'm free free fallin' ♪ ♪ i'm free free fallin' ♪ >> petty died overnight hours after suffering cardiac arrest at his home in malibu. reports started circulating that petty passed away, but he was still alive at the time. the 66-year-old was famous for classic rock hits like "free fallin'," "refugee," and "american girl." ♪ we'll take a live look. center city looking over broad street from the campus cam. getting a little active this morning. dark as it may be. the official sunrise time doesn't hit until 6:59. we usually see the sunlight break on the horizon 30 minutes earlier than that. we're not too far from starting to light up the sky. in philadelphia, 53 is the temperature currently. 5:40 this morning, around 64 at 10:00 a.m. the rise is nice, similar to yesterday. sunny in the afternoon, winds are light. dew point will be low which means low humidity. temperature about 75 degrees. at the jersey shore, 47 now. calm and clear. it's going to be like that pretty much the whole day. a light breeze keeps temperatures at bay. 67 at noon. upper 60s in the afternoon hours. spots around 70. that's about it at the jersey shore. of course, that time of year where it's too chilly to get in the water. it will be pretty out there. 50 the temperature this morning in delaware. 69 the temperature around your noontime. and then there you are in the afternoon, almost the same as philly. winds out of the southeast around eight miles per hour. wrapping it up in the pennsylvania suburbs. 46 is where we are currently, spots in the suburbs in the 30s. chilly to start. 67 at noon. winds are light. we stay nice and sunny, as well, into the afternoon hours. a little cooler than philly, around the low to mid 70s for highs today. the days to come, those temperatures ridse into the 80s for some of us. we'll look at how long that lasts coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you. about 19 minutes before 6:00 a.m. on this tuesday. let's check i hy-70 and jesa boyington with more. >> watching the lehigh valley at lehigh street and 78. both directions so far, so good. both directions okay. east and west no problems or delays. the rest of thothoe majors, 45 minutes or so ahead of the hump where we see the big delays and the -- the morning commute really start to get underway. 12 minutes on the eastbound side from the blue route to the vine. speeds into the 60s. same for 95 moving into center city. and from the schuylkill to 95, the blue route, southbound, speeds into the high 60s there, too. drive times haven't budged yet. same goes for the garden state parkway. pretty empty usually around this time. moving through the cape may toll plaza, especially into fall. both directions north and south, no problems. >> thank you. new this morning, late-night heartbreak. talk show hosts give emotional monologues in the aftermath of the las vegas massacre. preparing for the worst. how las vegas hospitals are handling the massive influx of patients. fran grenier. new jersey born and raised. like his father before him, he served our country with honor in the navy. came home and worked his way up from floor technician to supervisor at the salem power plant. as a husband and father, grenier knows how families struggle to make ends meet. that's why he'll fight to cut our taxes, and stand up to career politicians like steve sweeney. if we want to change trenton, there's only one way. fran grenier. the mass shooting killed 59, more than 500 others were hurt. a youth wrestling coach from shippensburg is missing. his family and friends say he's missing and don't know his condition. hospitals overloaded with casualties are getting widespread praise. hundreds of extra doctors and nurses helped handle victims lined up in the hallways. trauma centers played a critical role in the response. dr. michael battalino has been a trauma surgeon for years. he says with dozens dead and more injured, trauma staffs have to be well organized. >> that is a huge number of casualties to deal with. are they expired, are they critical?
