look at our radar and satellite map. what you see here is a pretty clear picture. see blips of green, that's just a false return from radar. no rain over us for this morning. if you have early morning errands to run, you're going to be good to go out there. as we go through the hour by hour model we are going to see chance of isolated showers here at 1:30 in the afternoon. i actually think this model is going too heavy with the showers throughout the area. it's going to more be just a few spot showers that roll by from about 1:30 right on through your early evening. by 9:30 seem fairly clear out there, but isolated chance for us today, not going to wash out any plans you may have for your saturday. let's take a look, shift gears here at hurricane jose. jose has been sitting now as a category 1 hurricane. and that situation that's in place right now may impact us as we get into the forecast come our late weekend early next week. so in a moment we're going to get that up for you and show you what we are tracking when it may impact you along the shore. coming up, irma's devastation. this morning, we're getting a closer look at the destruction left behind in the u.s. virgin a preview just ahead. temple university's investigating an alleged case of racial intimidation on campus. two black students tell nbc 10 they found a banana hanging outside their dorm room monday wide picture to show you over us just some thin high clouds in place, otherwise no rain to track. then you look across the entire board, there's no rain to track anywhere near us. that is a good thing. we don't have a front or storm system edging our direction to ruin your weekend plans. instead, it looks like a pretty good saturday and sunday moving forward. 84 degrees today in philadelphia, 83 tomorrow. that's pretty much the theme. low 80s for the suburbs, lehigh valley upper 70s at the jersey shore. and low 80s to upper 70s in delaware. now, one thing to note, we just saw this a minute ago going over our future model, some isolated showers are possible today but they will be very spotty, light in nature and short lived. so you can certainly do things outdoors, you just got to plan for maybe a spot shower rolling by briefly in the afternoon. let's talk shore and delaware beaches because there's a rip current risk in place. moderate risk today throughout all of our viewing area. just make sure you're checking with beach patrols in the area, maybe dangerous conditions. now, best thing you can do is really to avoid getting in the water because jose just churning up the waters out there. so it's going to get worse from here. likely elevated to a high risk by tomorrow and especially monday. and then that will likely be tuesday and wednesday as well. also a small craft advisory in place. same deal delaware beaches, jersey shore for building waves up to six feet, dangerous boating conditions as a result. again, this is something i think we are going to see for the next several days because jose's just going to be getting closer and closer to us as we progress. in fact, what we're looking at right now is jose's finally starting to break away from that looping path it had been sitting in for about a week. so watch the latest model here -- rather update from the national hurricane center showing it staying parallel and running along the east coast. this is from today right on through your sunday, right through your monday morning. still at a category 1 hurricane. then it may possibly downgrade as it approaches our area between early tuesday and early wednesday. now, what's important here is not necessarily the red line. while it looks likely it will stay out to sea, you see the cone here showing that the possible path waver very close to our shore. in fact, i measured this out it's only about 175 miles from that red line to the shore. now, on days four to five the error is about 175 miles. so there's certainly room for this to get closer and that would impact us locally even more so. but regardless we are going to feel the impacts. for philadelphia may just be showers and thunderstorms and gusty conditions, but at the jersey shore and delaware beaches, steady rain is certainly possible. minor coastal flooding and beach erosion possible, gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour and rough seas as a result. so right now we're putting that at the moderate threat zone. if jose were to track closer to us, that would mean a higher risk for the shores and delaware beach points. this is something we'll watch closely over the next several days but does look like right now regardless we'll feel some impacts locally along our shore points. we are getting closer to learning the fate of the frank rizzo statue in philadelphia. the time for the public to send in their ideas is over. we'll tell you how many people weighed in and what happens next. an annual charity race targeted by a bomber last year is set to get under way this morning at the jersey shore. we'll take you there coming up. the future of the controversial frank rizzo statue in philadelphia is now in the city's hands after receiving feedback. city officials say more than 3,000 people weighed in on the statue of the former philadelphia mayor. the city took opinions online and by mail over the past three weeks. the feedback campaign followed rallies and vandalism of the statue by people demanding its removal. the city says it will not consider petitions in making its final decisions. we will continue to follow this. on thursday this past week the rizzo statue in center city got a bit of company, crews installed a 12-foot tall entitled all power to all people. unveiled as a counterbalance to the statue of the late mayor and police commissioner who many said did not have a healthy relationship with many in the african-american community in philadelphia. the phils saw win streak snapped as they welcome the athletics back to philadelphia. the starting pitcher in this case -- ended up hitting it out there, you can see here matt joyce ripped a home run over the right field fence and that would be enough for oakland. phillies get shut out 4-0. all right. let's talk some birds now. the countdown to kickoff is on. eagles and chiefs play tomorrow at 1:00 at arrowhead stadium. birds heading to their week two matchup with the chiefs without runningback humphrey. he'll miss at least half of the season with a torn hamstring. meantime, the rest of the team will have a tough stretch on the road at one of the hardest stadiums to play in the league. >> ar row head staid yum quite the atmosphere, heard great things. i'm sure their fans will come out rocking, we have to be able to handle the noise and be on our ps and qs in terms of communication. >> we know we didn't play that well on the road last season. it's a time to prove that we can play on the road. but, you know, also win on the road. >> nbc 10 is your official eagles station. it's the only place where you can catch eagles game day kickoff, that's tomorrow at 9:30 in the morning. we'll have exclusive interviews with wide receiver nelson aguilar and team captain malcolm jenkins. and we'll talk with coach doug pederson about playing against former eagles coach andy reid. then check out game day final after the game. that's when we'll talk to the players right outside the locker room. we'll have the complete highlights plus interviews with coach pederson, carson wentz and many other players. that comes up after sunday night football and nbc 10 news at 11:00. rock and rolling and running. the half marathon now under way, 5k and 10k races took off this morning the the half marathon is tomorrow. the event raises money for cancer research. 8:56 on this saturday. gunfire erupts just outside of a north philadelphia hookah bar. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal is following the investigation from police headquarters. randy. >> reporter: yeah, bullets flying outside of this bar. a shooter targeting pedestrians walking by. coming up next, the security guard who was on duty at the time who helped stop even more casualties. and our weekend forecast looks pretty nice, but if you're down by the shore, you'll already start to feel the effects of hurricane jose. we'll talk about when it may impact us locally coming up. right now on nbc 10 news today, a gunman starts shooting pedestrians outside of a philadelphia hookah bar. police say it came to an end when a security guard took action. we're live following the investigation. we are tracking jose. the storm is making its way through the atlantic. we're keeping an eye on the possible impacts in our region in the first alert forecast. a charity run targeted by a terror attack last year is getting under way once again this time under tight security. good morning. this is nbc 10 news today. thanks for being with us on this saturday. i'm rosemary connors. it's 9:00. we're going to start with the weekend weather, plenty to get to, but i'm sure people want to know what it's going to do oud e out today. meteorologist krystal klei is keeping an eye on it. >> most of our locations look very pretty clear blue sky but some spots are holding onto fog and this is one of the locations, cape may marina. this picture looks better than it did an hour and a half ago. take a look at the reports we're getting. allentown in the clear ten miles for visibility, down to half a mile in lancaster, looking for some clearing over the next half hour or so there. but areas like atlantic city, millville, dover now much better off than they were. still some fog but definitely can drive now in these conditions. good news is as expected this is starting to thin out. 70s across the board for most of us here. trenton, you're at 73 and philadelphia at 75. wilmington at 73 and atlantic city at 70. well, we're in 70s right now, by this afternoon we're going to be looking at low to mid 80s, which is actually warmer than average for this time of year. a nice last weekend of summer. switching gears though, this is what we have our eye on, this is hurricane jose. jose right now is still kind of stuck in the same spot it has been stuck in, but here's the deal, it's going to start making the turn to the north and as it does so it's going to ride right parallel to the east coast and going to bring some impacts to us locally depending on how close it gets to the coast. it could be worse or better off. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. all right. thanks for that, krystal. new overnight, a security guard shoots and kills a gunman outside of a hookah bar. the guard fired his weapon after the man took aim at two people heading toward the bar in north philly. now police are trying to get to the bottom of the motive in this case. nbc 10's randy gyllenhaal joins us live from police headquarters with more on the investigation. randy. >> reporter: and police tell us that security guard is cooperative. he was interviewed by homicide detectives this morning at police headquarters. the first gunshots happened outside that hookah bar last night. that's at the corner of germantown and cumberland street in north philly. police say a 30-year-old suspect began wildly shooting at people outside who were just walking down the street. a man and the woman were hit in the legs. police say they may have actually been heading into that bar. the security guard who was on duty at the time saw what was happening and immediately confronted that suspect. >> but the guard was on duty at the time standing by the front door when he observed only feet away from him this male approach from cumberland street and begin open fire on pedestrians that were walking down the street. >> reporter: police say that security guard shot the suspect multiple times in the stomach. the suspect dropped his gun, ran away and was taken by a private car to temple hospital where he later died. those two victims both had injuries to their legs. they're expected to survive. police still working to try to figure out why exactly this guy started opening fire outside a busy bar. for now live in center city, randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. >> thanks for that, randy. this morning we're learning more about how alcohol may have played a role in the death of a college student in the lehigh valley. mccrae williams was found unconscious just outside of his dorm at lafayette college on sunday afternoon. the school official confirms to nbc 10 that a caller told campus police that the 19-year-old lacrosse player had been drinking and needed medical help. williams died at the hospital on monday. an autopsy revealed that williams died from blunt force head injuries, but it's still unclear exactly how he got those injuries. a plea deal means no trial for jeffrey sandusky, the son of convicted child molester jerry sandusky. yesterday jeffrey sandusky pleaded guilty to child sex abuse charges. his trial was set to begin in a week. now, under the plea deal the 41-year-old -- excuse me, the 41-year-old will serve at least three to six years in prison, but the judge could give him some more time. prosecutors say sandusky asked two underage children to send him nude photos and to perform sex acts. in 2012 the jury found jeffrey's father jerry sandusky guilty of sexually abusing ten boys. the former penn state assistance football coach is now serving 30 to 60 years in prison. today, a final farewell for a south jersey sailor killed in a collision involving the "u.s.s. john s. mccain" kenneth smith was aboard the ship. visitation begins this afternoon in cherry hill. smith was one of ten sailors who died when the mccain collided with an oil tanker off the coast of singapore last month. the navy sent a cyber team to confirm that computer hacking had no role in that collision. today, folks at the jersey shore are preparing to host a race that was targeted in a terror attack. the semper five marine corps charity run in seaside heights is just down the road from last year's site in seaside park. that's where a suspected terrorist blew up the trash can just before the start of the event. seaside park was just one target a year ago. you may remember a bomb also went off in new york's chelsea neighborhood injuring more than two dozen people. and then in elizabeth, new jersey, two men found a backpack filled with pipe bombs. nobody was injured in that case. ahmad khan rahini was arrested and will be next month. officials say security is this year's top priority with officers posted and crews removing trash all along the race route. a local bridge is about to become a ballroom. we'll show you how it will be a real river dance tonight as folks move to the music above the water in philadelphia. that's straight ahead. take a look. this is hurricane jose. we're going to talk about some of the impacts we're going to feel through our weekend and into next week coming up. here's a live look down broad street from our kimmel center campus cam. a nice weekend though for most of us. hey honey, how was practice? good. must've been hot out there today, huh? yeah. yeah. why don't you go put that stuff in the laundry room right now? ok. do your athletes bring home big odors? tide sport is super concentrated to beat even... ...the toughest stains and odors. hey, buddy! hey. woo! somebody ran laps. yup the new tide sport collection. it's got to be tide. some have it, some don't. when the odds are stacked against you, you either hide or stand up. at strayer university we've seen it in our students for 125 years. and if you ever think of quitting, our success coaches will be there to pick you up and work with you every day to put you on the right path. it's time. strayer university. let's get it, america. welcome back. let's run through our neighborhood planners for today. today's going to actually be a very nice day, just the chance of an isolated shower as we go along. so this morning we're about upper 70s through 11:00 a.m. then we get into the 80s this afternoon. low to mid 80s for forecast highs. you see 84 at 3:00 p.m. in philadelphia. spot shower possible as we go through the afternoon hours, we start to cool by 7:00 to 78 degrees. in the suburbs 81 at 3:00 this afternoon. about the same in lehigh valley and berks county with scattered clouds as we get through the afternoon. and, again, i say this really focused in, spotty showers. it's not a washout. you can be outdoors today, just be prepped that you may have a little brief shower roll overhead. 79 at 11:00 a.m. in delaware, up to 82 at 3:00, about the same for new jersey and at the shore some upper 70s for high temperatures and down to 73 by 7:00 p.m. so there's a look at tropical radar and satellite. here's hurricane jose, still about the same spot. but now it's going to break free from the holding pattern and begin moving to the north. models in very good agreement on that. on top of the fact jose churning at the sea, we're also tracking a tropical disturbance sitting here and what is now a tropical depression but could turn into a tropical storm. so the tropics really have been firing up and it looks like they're not stopping any time soon. we're going to talk more about jose in a few minutes. as we mentioned, today folks at the jersey shore are getting ready to host a race that was targeted in a terror attack. it's called the semper five marines corp charity run. this year it's being held in seaside heights. last year it was held in seaside parks. you may remember that's where a suspected terrorist blew up a trash can along the start of the route before the event. nbc's brian thompson is live. tell us about the runners and spectators, do they feel safe? >> reporter: yeah, we just had the start of the mile race. yep. and we got all these people who are absolutely feeling safe about this race. look at that. they're going to be in the 5k. we just started the one-mile run. the 5k race, the semper five 5k will begin in about half an hour, i guess you could say. and do they feel safe? well, just listen to skylar and mark hardy. >> the person who did it was stupid to do it. and this year i think it would be better. >> reporter: you think it will be safer? >> yes. >> reporter: did you have any hesitation bringing her to this race? >> no. i work for u.s. customs and border protection and law enforcement officer, i have faith in all the law enforcement here -- officers here. and i believe they're going to keep everybody safe. >> reporter: now, at this point the security is so suffocating that you could say that, well, it's as tight as what you'd expect to find around a presidential visit. we have the fbi, the navy's ncis, we have homeland security, state police with their boats and their helicopters, the county -- ocean county sheriff's department with their drones. i've seen bomb squads here from the state police. the prosecutor's office from ocean county is here as well, and of course seaside heights police department has every officer on duty today. that's how intense this is, how suffocating it is, if you will. cops lined up from block-to-block-to-block. they've checked -- they had the bomb sniffing dogs. if anything can be safe after what we saw last year, especially when it spread to chelsea and then elizabeth with that one bombing attack in multiple locations, this place is safe. back to you. >> all right. brian thompson live for us, not taking any chances out there. thanks, brian. it could be the biggest local high school football game of the year. we're talking the prep archbishop wood wednesday head-to-head last night on the field. we have all the highlights in the nbc 10 high school blitz. shift without a disaster. my bargain detergent couldn't keep up. so, i switched to tide pods. they're super concentrated, so i get a better clean. number one trusted. a little less, still just a little pup. and i'm not really sure what kind of dog she is. she's an interesting mix. >> a cute one. >> yes. >> super cute and big loving eyes. >> that's what's important is she's super cute. she's a little scared right now, but she was very happy in the shelter when i took her out of her kennel. so she definitely likes people and wants to spend time with them. and she's going to be available for adoption at our everyday adoption center. >> krystal, you've got a pup at home, your dog needs a friend. >> well, yeah, but my boyfriend at home like, no, no more. but what i was going to say is when i first adopted my pup because i also got my dog from a shelter he was a little nervous. maybe you can talk about the fact people just have to have some patience because now my guy's crazy running all around the house. >> yeah. the shelter can be a scary place for dogs, it's loud, there's smells they don't know. but once they're in a home environment and gain confidence, they feel comfortable and open up and you get to see their true personalities. >> break out of their shells big time. big puppy eyes right now, i'm sure she has a lot of energy. >> how did she come in the shelter? >> she's a stray. we don't know too much about her. she was with another dog running around and that dog's also going to be up at everyday adoption center. so you could get two. >> friends, hey, there you go. >> they're tiny, two equals one. >> yeah. >> and if you are looking to adopt, you can head to the everyday adoption center. there are adoption specials happening.
