there. >> florida is gist one of the states feeling irma's impact. take a look at this mage from the radar. you can see the monster storm is hitting ten different states. in south carolina irma spawned a water spout off the isle of palms. left hundreds of thousands without power across the state. >> in georgia the high winds also brought down trees and other debris. officials say irma is responsible for at least two deaths in that state tonight. right now hurricane irma is being blamed for 39 deaths across the united states. and the caribbean. in florida, millions are without power. and the major airports remain closed. aircraft carrier and other ships are headed to florida to help with search and rescue. tonight people in the united states are still trying to assess the full damage of the storm. >> in the caribbean, irma's devastation has been apparent for days now. nbc10 keith jones is live in the breaking news center. with the latest efforts to get help to those most in need. >> entire islands were evacuated. prime minister of barbuda said it could take months if not years to rebuild. unless one family gets their way. >> reporter: lines to evacuate most lost everything. houses torn apart. or gone completely. hearts torn open. families shipped off away from home. >> they were brought over to our sister island by boat. there's no one on the island at all. it's not livable. >> her family is from barbuda. population about 1,500. >> how many people are on the island now? >> there no one left on the island. >> reporter: because it's unhabitable. meanwhile the schools devastated, classrooms. we talked to a principal inside a room of evacuated people. >> they have nothing. you're totally helpless. >> reporter: that's why people are filling barrels like this one. all over the area. with non-perishable goods. clothing sp hope. >> it will knock us down from time to time. but the good thing is if it's. >> it's home. to see it in the devastation is just irma is just a tropical depression tonight. it is causing a lot of problems. >> let's get an update from tammie souza. >> we're watching wha going on with irma. this is the last 36 hours. you see it moving well into the tennessee valley. look at that shield of rain. it's really beginning to expand out. as this storm basically loses its form. you can also see here in south carolina it's been a really rough day. that red is the tornado watch box. they have had warnings, and tornados spinning off. this is the sector that does it right here. it's that kind of front right quadrant if you look at the direction that the storm is moving. you can see the clouds drifting in our direction. we are going to be looking at a cloudier day tomorrow. and maybe even a little bit of the moisture headed our way. from irma. by the time we get to the middle of the week. let's check with the track. at this point. irma 45 miles per hour winds. irma is still a tropical storm. soon, to become just a tropical depression. looks like it may fizzle out in the tennessee valley. kentucky, you may be the last spot that actually has any official report of irma. any where in the cone. look at all the moisture. it's flowing up and out ward. towards us. we'll talk about when we could see this moisture making its way in our direction. we're goik going talk about hurricane jose. which is taking a different path to the west. >> all right. now to an nbc10 exclusive. take a look at this surveillance video. it shows ab alleged drunk driver smashing right into that car. police say that driver hit at least six cars on sunday. and killed this 73 year-old veteran and grandfather. nbc10 spoke to his family tonight. and several witnesses who stopped that driver from getting away. >> this standing near his car when he was struck. and then dragged for nearly three blocks underneath the van. tonight his family is talking about what he meant to them. and this neighborhood. >> that shouldn't happen to anyone. 73 year-old man being dragged down the street. three blocks. that's the unbearable part. >> the family spoke with me outside his home. remembering the father of four. grandfather of seven. a vietnam war vet who lved his country and the american flag. his life ended suddenly blocks from his home, surveillance video obtained shows neighbors surrounding a van driven by a suspected drurng driver. minutes earlier, police say the driver dragged him to his death. plowed through several intersections and hit six cars. the witness asked his fate not be shown. >> i witnessed hi hit had guy. like i saw it in my mirror. he hit this guy and drug him. >> reporter: the video shows the final crash that stopped the van from groing further. the crowd kept the driver, 32 year-old louis hernandez in his seat. until police arrived. >> it was insane. we had to jump mt. van and pull the keys out the car. >> a retired lock smith was helping out a neighbor. when he was struck. >> he was changing a lock for a neighbor. and the drunk driver came down the street. >> he's a good guy. he just does and does and just had a way of making everyone feel special. >> reporter: this is where the van stopped. louis hernandez has been charnled with third degree murder. homicide by vehicle skb dui. he had a chicken bone in his mouth eating while police say he was driving impaired. >> tonight philadelphia police are calling the murder of a father in front of his two year-old daughter a crime like they have never seen. tonight we are getting our first look at the teenager accused of killing. 16 year-old mar vin roberts is charged with murder as an adult. roberts and his older brother approached outside his house thursday night. investigators said they took his waultd and demanded his car keys before the teenager shot him twice in the head. >> it's one of the most horrific things i have seen in 24 years in the police department. very hard to watch. >> police use surveillance video to identify the two suspects. sources tell nbc10 the brothers could be heard laughing as they made theirs cape. grand old opera will host a public memorial. for troy gentry. and pilot were killed after their helicopter crashed last friday. he was on the way to play a show at the flying w. the ntsb is handling the information. the pilot. -- the chapper was not equipped with a black box. investigators took part of the debris back to the lab. >> today americans gathered at the hollowed grounds with thousands lost their lives on september 11th, 2001. ceremonies were held today in pennsylvania. pentagon and site of former twin towers. the president also held a moment of silence at the white house. to mark the 16th anniversary of the attacks. memorials to the victims were also held in all three of our local states. >> in pennsylvania, it was about keeping the legacy alive. nbc10 for the remembrance and light ceremony. among the 9/11 victims were more than a dozen people from buck county who commuted to new york. >> new jersey neighbor placed nearly 3,000 flags at the memorial. one for each victim. the flags aren't just meant to commemorate those who lost their lives in the attack. they pay tribute to police, firefighters, and ems workers to put their lives at risk every day. in delaware officials dedicate a new work of art to honor a group who survived the attacks. members escape the 87 floor of the south tower. the company dedicated this sculpture called the delaware root at their new headquarters. still ahead tonight. who's sleeping over. how three unsuspected people let an alleged killer spend the night in their home. death threats and racial slurs against high school students. the messages on social media that have parents in chester county raising concern. we're surrounded. they're all over. bugging out. the swarming insects that had people taking cover in philadelphia. right now death threats and racial slurs. these mess alks of hate targeted students at a west chester high school. police say they were posted on social media by a fellow student. >> brandon hudson spoke with the victims families who say the school district needs to do more to protect their children. >> how many of you were targeted? >> reporter: these teens went to bed with worries on their mind last night. after they say they were threatened on social media. most are black and hispanic students. >> how many of you went to school today? all of you. >> some of them left school early because of a post on a now deleted account. which says specific students would die today at school. >> my mom picked me up. she was scared. we're worried if we're going to get shot in the hall way. >> reporter: a parent shared photographs of posts with students faces and racial slurs. >> we're all minorties. >> a group of students stood in front of concerned parents tonight to discuss the threat. more than 100 people packed an auditorium to discuss what happened and how to change the culture. organized after her daughter was targeted. >> i believe the school district has a huge problem. that they're not willing to acknowledge. >> reporter: west chester superintendent said the threats were tied to 9/11. and added in a statement quote i want to reiterate to all students ha any student engaging in this behavior will face disciplinary action. in addition to any rax taken by police. police found the student responsible for the post and the chester county district attorney will investigate. >> these kids have enough to fear with going on with what's going on out here in the world. let alone being in school. a suspected killer is now in federal custody after he was arrested at 30th street station. u.s. customs enforcement and homeland security arrested the 32 year-old after a tip came in from officials. he's wanted increase wiin connection with with the death of his neighbor. >> he stayed at three different places in philadelphia. including a student while using the couch surfing app. connect with host advertising a fro place to stay. >> ed snow den made his cyber appearance in philadelphia. smiling there. greeted a cheering the upper 70s and low 80s. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds with the high thin deck of clouds will be with us throughout the day. i think it's late tomorrow night and wednesday that we'll see the first of the irma showers making their way in our direction. radar all quiet tonight. look at the bands of rain already up to through norfolk and see them approaching the dy area. the clouds already in place. across philadelphia. so here's whaes going to happen. this is going to expand. this rain shield. as this now tropical depression moves on up into the ohio valley and tennessee valley. here's your hour by hour forecast. you can see that basically through tomorrow, we'll wake up a little bit chilly. get into the afternoon. we'll make it again upper 70s low 80s we'll see the high thin clouds. here it comes. wednesday in the morning the first of the showers isolated thunder storms will move through the area. persistent on and off. we won't see torrential downpours. but a chance of this each and every day. all the way through saturday. maybe even sunday. so carry the umbrella. all right this is hurricane jose. jose was supposed to stay out to seament there's nothing to steer it. it's in a big circle out here. and echtly it will be high pressure building into forth of it. what's going to happen, it has 85 miles per hour winds. it will probably weaken a bit more. and it will make a loop. it has nothing to steer it. and eventually that high pressure will steer it up to the north and west. the hope is it stays off the u.s. mainland. but basically all of the models agree with that. except a few. they have waivered back and forth. we'll watch this closely. here's the euroen model. which was so spot on good. with harvey and irma. taking it close to but not on the east coast. here is the global forecast model. the american model. which earlier today brought it onto the coast. and the now it's off of the coast. we'll watch this closely for next week. not your weekend. here's a look at your ten day on ten. 81 for tomorrow. with the mix of sun and clouds. we'll see on wednesday, thursday and friday. even into saturday. a chance of showers courtesy of irma.
