House. Nightly news begins right now. Announcer from nbc news World Headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with lester holt. Good evening. A lot of investment portfolios including retirement nest eggs shrank today when stocks took another stunning fall. Experts warn we may need a strong stomach because this up and down ride is likely not over. The trading day started with a dramatic freefall. The dow dropping over 1,000 points. And after some halfhearted rallies ended down more than 3 1 2 off 588 points, the nasdaq and s p, down almost 4 . Lets drill down on why this is happening and what it means to you. Well bring in jim cramer to talk about it in a moment but first cnbcs carl quintanilla. It was a stunning drop for a stock market that really hasnt had one in years. But this wasnt about the u. S. Economy faltering. Its about the Global Economy losing steam. It was by wall street standards an historic drop. The dow falling by more than 1,000 points at the opening bell. Titans of American Business crashing. Home depot down 20 . General electric and jpmorgan down 21 before recovering. It left economists, traders the noise this morning created confusion. It create a little bit of chaos. Reporter and even cnbc news anchors stunned. Got to make some phone calls. These are enormous moves. Its certainly that breathless feeling, you know, when the market started to open down 1,000 points, i think that takes your breath away. Reporter by noon there were signs of stability, but the concerns that prompted the selloff remain. Some believe stocks have simply gone too long without a meaningful correction. Thats wall street lingo for a 10 decline from the highs. Some believe stocks are too expensive for a slowgrowing economy. The dow has risen for six straight years. Only once in history did it make it to seven. We usually get a 10 correction. Often once a year, sometimes even more frequently. And we havent had one in a long while. Reporter one big concern, the slowing economy in china. A big importer of u. S. Goods. If it slows down, that means fewer american computers, cars, even fast food being exported. That could mean fewer u. S. Jobs and has been weighing font market for weeks. But today some reassurance. Apple ceo tim cook emailed Cnbcs Jim Cramer and said iphone activations in china are accelerating. Apple closed down 2 , after being down 13 at the open. One thing is almost certain. A return of volatility. Wider market swings. And for some even encouragement that markets are coming back to reality. Its really healthy when you scare people. What you want to do is scare them without giving them a heart attack. Thats what it may have felt like for some. By the way, lester, the dow posted its third consecutive drop of 300 or more points. The number of times its done that in history, zero. Lester . Carl quintanilla, thanks. Lets bring in your colleague jim cramer, the host of cnbcs mad money. Jim, were all looking at this through our own set of lenses, through our stage in life, how close we are to retirement. What should we do before we start moving money and making Big Decisions . Well, first, if youre 100 invested, thats probably a mistake here. I do believe theres more down side. If you are borrowing money to own stocks i think youre really on the wrong path and youve got to sell tomorrow no matter what. But otherwise, lester, if youve got cash on the sidelines, depending upon your age, youve got some options. We should go over them. I think there are some great opportunities here. Youre suggesting theres more down side, though, in the near future. Play this out. Just play the week out for me. What do you expect . I think this is a contagion, in other words, were importing it from other countries. The record is actually not that good on contagions and what they do to our stock market. 1997, 1998, 2011. We had declines that were doubledigit from when they started. We havent really had that much down side versus what those would indicate. Those say 5 to 10 over the next couple of weeks is going to happen. Jim cramer, thanks. And you and carl will be part of a special report, want to let folks know. Its markets in turmoil. It airs at 7 00 p. M. Eastern time on cnbc. Lets turn now to another big story were following. The heros salute to that trio of americans who foiled a potential massacre aboard a train in france. I watched kevin daigle walk from his pickup truck, made it over to the trooper. You could hear him breathing in there. And tell him boy, youre lucky. Youre lucky. Youre going to die soon. Reporter daigle is in custody, charged with firstdegree murder thanks to a small group of good samaritans. They got him on the ground and actually used my trooper, used his handcuffs and handcuffed the guy. Reporter Robert Ledoux wrestled the rifle away. This is a hero right here. Reporter charlie bertier was also among them. The longest ten minutes of our lives, waiting for someone else to get there. It seemed like forever.
