and surprise wedding. 14 months after nearly dying in a tragic crash, tracy morgan marries his long-time fiancee, walking down the aisle without a cane. we have photos from the emotional ceremony "today," august 24, 2015. >> announcer: this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. you're thinking, wow, it looks different. we are doing work in studio 1a down stairs, taking advantage of the two-week timeshare in kathie lee and hoda's studio. >> we had a week-long series on plastic surgery so the studio decided to have work done. >> a facelift. >> to our top story. the men who overpowered an attacker on a plane honrd with a b big award. >> reporter: from stormy paris, what a weekend for three americans on vacation in europe, never imagining they would be invited to the presidential palace in paris. they are going home with france's highest honor. arriving at the president's palace in paris, spencer stone, alex skarlatos and anthony sad ler receiving a hero's welcome in the city of light for their bravery in disarming a man on a train armed with an ak-47, pistol and a box cutter. the 26-year-old from motor vehicle, ayoub el-khazzani. giving reporters a play by play. first the men hear a gunshot and the sound of breaking fwlasz. they turn to see elle-khazzani struggling with his automatic weapon and tackle him. they say he pulled out a handgun and a box cutter, slicing spencer in the arm. using their fists and a choke hold the men rendered him unconscious, tying him up with the help of other passengers. >> we entered the car, saw him cocking the ak-47. it was either do something or die. >> he seemed ready to fight to the end. so were we. >> reporter: spencer was injured in the assault but ignored his injury to help a fellow passenger, identified as french-american mark mugallion. for these friends it was one for all, all for one. >> i saw spencer and alek get up. i couldn't get them go alone. >> if it wasn't for them i would have been dead. >> reporter: alek and spencer are headed to germany next with their families. anthony polos. >> they are wearing their bravery. thank you very much. >> awfully proud of them. all eyes on wall street amid a global sell-off. the dow inching closer to correction territory coming off its worst week since 2011 including the 530-point fall on friday. we'll get jim cramer's take in a moment. first, what exactly is a market correction? it occurs when values decline 10% or more, stopping an upward trend. many analysts believe a correction fixes an over priced or inflated market bringing prices down to their actual value. for some it is an opportunity to get into market that may have been been out of reach. their buying pushes prices back up and stops the correction. a correction usually lasts less than two months, preventing a huge prolonged sell-off or a bubble burst, similar to what happened in 2000. while market corrections typically happen every 18 months, the last one was nearly four years ago. jim cramer is the host of kwo"m money" on cnbc. >> good morning, matt. >> a 530-point sell off. people thought the weekend would calm things down but it's not looking so good. >> no. this started in china. i have to call it a crash. there is no short way to put it. there is a tremendous decline coming from china and we are importing it. >> just explain why that impacts us dramatically here. >> first of all, i think what happened is we are all connected, we know that. second, china is the second largest economy in the world. there is no avoiding it. we are stronger than they are. we're the strongest we have been. we used numbers when we last had a correction. we are much better off. >> you said something to our produce overnight. the great myth is that the stock market always reacts rationally. it doesn't always. >> right. >> given that, is it reacting rationally now? >> we are going to get a 7 to 12% decline. if it's like the last three times we imported the problems from overseas. yes, that's over reaction because gasoline will be down. the dollar will go down. that's important. interest rates will be on holdle if the federal reserve pays attention. >> if we get to an official correction of 10% how do we know if it's just that? what are the signs it could go longer and deeper? >> we have to see a spike in unemployment which is unlikely. we have to see interest rates and inflation go higher which is off the table and we have to see a banking crisis which is inconceivable. >> one of the other things you have said on the show, nobody has ever made a dime panicking. >> right. >> having said that, what should the average investor do in this process? >> on friday, 403 of the 500 stocks in the s&p were up versus two years ago. if you have big profits there is nothing wrong with taking some off the table. it will be a bad today, probablile a bad week. if you have no stock, if you are looking to put some money to work for your retirement account, by the end of the day you should make a move today. >> good advice, jim cramer. thank you very much. savannah? matt, thank you. now to the presidential race and a question on minds this morning. is vice president joe biden inching closer to a run? a weekend meeting this weekend only serving to fuel speculation. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is the story electrifying the political world, especially democrats. joe biden, according to his team, making a last-minute trip to d.c. to meet with a woman many liberals wanted to run against hillary clinton and the wall street journal is saying biden is leaning toward a run if he can mount a competitive bid. neither vice president biden nor elizabeth warren had to be seen for the message to be heard. an hour-long private lunch at the vp's residence. the surest sign yet biden the weighing a 2016 run. >> are you ready to fight. >> reporter: warren, a darling among progressives may be the second most prominent woman trailing hillary clinton. she's been lukewarm about clinton's campaign. most recently during an interview in boston. >> was it a mistake for your party to anoint her as the candidate early on? >> i don't think anybody has been anointed. >> reporter: biden and war rep discussed policy issues important to progressives and touched on both parties' primary campaigns with biden making it clear he was seriously considering a bid of his own. still, he didn't directly ask warren for her support. >> it has nothing to do with me. >> reporter: with clinton fending off allegations about her use of her private e-mail this poll shows 37% of voters find her honest and trustworthy. 57% don't. biden's numbers are the opposite with nearly 6 in 10 saying they trust the vp. some democrats think a biden challenge could benefit clinton. >> she's a terrible front-runner. she's a marvelous candidate in the middle of the race. >> reporter: biden's aides said he'd make a decision by the end of summer, that deadline couldle slide. most agree if he chooses to run biden would have to do it in time for the first democratic debate -- october 13. a long-time democratic strategist says biden's team understands his best chance to successfully enter the race is to be effectively drafted, welcomed with open arms by the party where he would be seen as a party savior, not a spoiler. savannah? >> thank you. chuck todd is the political director for nbc and moderator of "meet the press." >> good morning. >> biden really, really wants to run, looking for a path, a way to get in. >> exactly. looking for a rationale. you don't leak out the elizabeth warren meeting, gather meetings. he wants to run. he doesn't want to lose. he doesn't want to do it to say he ran a third time. but he's looking for a way in and to peter's point, he's looking for a ground swell. it's not there yet. the hope in leaking out the warren meeting is to send a message to progressives, we focus on hillary clinton but there is another person in the race doing well, bernie sanders and it's the liz wet warren wing that's going well. maybe she'll be a running mate type of thing could create a ground swell. >> telling progressives i could be the one. >> i could be your guy. >> seems like the end of summer deadline is slipping. is he stalling to see if there is another shoe to fall with hillary clinton? >> no. he's trying to put together a campaign. they have been making a lot of calls. i talked to people and there's been outreach to whether it's donors, strat egists in key states. this is expensive. he has to use a government plane. he has air force 2. the down side, he has air force 2 and he has to pay for it. the deadline of october, the first democratic debate is set for october 13. he has to decide. >> president obama. he's studiously avoided it so far. >> he's on vacation for the last two weeks but he's back today. he can avoid a shouted question today, maybe tomorrow. at some point he'll say something. privately he's been very supportive of the idea. he's not told biden yes or no he should run. >> they have their weekly lunch today the president and vice president. >>le the president has to say something at some point. >> thank you very much. a louisiana state trooper is fighting for his life after being shot in the head during a traffic stop. nbc's stephanie gosk has more on that. >> "straight outta compton" pulled in an estimated $26.8 million. >> matt, i want to tell you we are now down over 1,000 points on the dow. we printed down 1,031 points, down nearly 6% in a day. just in the first three minutes of trading. this is not a panic now. this is about traders trying to figure out what exactly the right level is for the current stock market. for a lot of investors it's also about trying to figure out exactly what the risk tolerance is in the market. we haven't seen a lot of these types of moves especially to the downside. many say since the great financial crisis back in 2008, 2009. for a lot of people this is a very, very stark, very staunch reminder there is risk in the marketplace. we are down 165 points in the dow now. >> putting it in perspective and in the course of the last five days a terrible week for the dow last week, capped off on friday when it dropped about 530 points. are we seeing an official correction now? a 10% decline in values? >> we did. that's a good point here. as of friday's close, we did pull back more than 10% from the record highs in the dow jones industrial average average. we are in that correction territory. that's viewed negatively by some traders. it may be an indicator for more down side to come. it's also interesting here as well, to put it in perspective. last week the headlines you saw in the papers this weekend said the dow jones industrial average lost about 1,000 plus points in the course of a trading week. five days. we lost that many in the first three or four minutes of trading today. again, a very ugly open to start this monday. it will be interesting to see whether there is stability that's found right now. the headlines, of course, right now are certainly not positive here. >> when you talk about stability, aren't there systems in place that would stop the carnage after a certain level of loss? >> there are. there are policies that are put in place by exchanges. in essence, to allow people who participate, who are involved directly with markets and exchanges to kind of put speed bumps up and stop signs up so things can be halted, reassessed and possibly re-opened, halted again. there are a number of those emergency-type measures being put into place. a lot of people feel strange about this now. the last time we saw many of these types of instruments employed it was during the financial crisis. this is by no means a financial crisis now. we are a much different country and economy than we were back then. much healthier, some argue. it does provide flashbacks not in a good way, about what it was like during the bad days during 2009. >> we talked earlier on our show about opportunity. a lot of people see this as devastation. others see it as opportunity. do you hold back on opportunity until you get what you talked about -- some stability for the moment? >> that's tough. everybody should talk to their own financial adviser. what i would say is this -- it's very, very difficult for anybody -- trader, investor or otherwise -- to time the market. you can't say, i'm going to pick this as the bottom. i will buy now or this is the top, i will sell now. many financial advisers will tell clients, sit down and figure out whether stocks, bonds or currencies or commodities, any type of investment is right for their portfolio. what kind of waiting will it have? this is a big reminder for investors that it's about maybe dollar cost averaging. use opportunities like this to buy in small chunks and do it over time in the long run. >> people focused on the number on the upper right. down 885 now after the 530-point loss on friday. people will be watching the market. thank you domenic. we'll return most of you (music plays) people are both soft and strong, which is why our products are too. and we believe in value, so we give you 60% more sheets than charmin ultra strong. angel soft. be soft. be strong. guapo doesn't know that he's eating natural food made with real quality ingredients, and no soy, no wheat, and no corn. all he knows is, there will be no crumb left behind, and you're to thank for it! petsmart has a wide selection of natural foods and knowledgable associates to help you find what your pet needs. save up to $7 on select large bags of dry dog and cat food. fill your pet with love. petsmart®. inspired by pets. padvil pm gives you the healingu at nsleep you need, it. helping you fall asleep and stay asleep so your body can heal as you rest. advil pm. for a healing night's sleep. does your makeup remover every kiss-proof,ff?
