philadelphia police officer died in a crash here. tonight, new calls for safety improvements. good evening. i'm denise nakano. rafael should have been celebrating his daughter's 10th birthday today. instead, his family and fellow officers are in mourning. the accident happened before midnight at henry avenue and dupont street. randy gyllenhaal is live on henry avenue. some compared this area to a racetrack. >> reporter: denise, part of the problem is, especially at night, this road, henry avenue, can feel almost like a highway. the lanes are extremely wide. however, when you approach some of the curves, the speed limit is only about 30 miles per hour. residents have been reporting a lot of accidents, including the tragic one that happened last night. the off-duty officer's truck crumbled when it slammed into a tree. he missed the curve. police say he was speeding. rafael, a 10-year veteran of the police force, died shortly after impact. >> a beautiful guy. that's all i can say. >> reporter: his friends say he leaves behind two kids. his daughter just turned 10 years old day. >> loved his children. all playing. >> he will be dearly missed at the 39th district of the philadelphia police department. >> reporter: investigators say the road he was driving on is notorious for speeding and tight curves. >> you see henry avenue. it's a raceway sometimes. >> reporter: we're driving on henry avenue now. we're going the speed limit, about 35 miles per hour. as you can see, there's going to be drivers passing us on the left, going a little faster as we approach the curve where the accident happened. >> it's not a curve to take at 60 miles per hour. >> reporter: drivers routinely go too fast down the winding road. >> yeah, i think it being a wide, multiple-lane road, people think they can go faster and the curves pop out of nowhere. >> it's like a racetrack here. >> reporter: solutions aren't easy. some residents are asking for more police enforcement. >> that would help, especially late night. it always happens late night. >> reporter: investigators are looking into whether the off-duty officer was asleep when he crashed. at this point, alcohol is not a factor. accident investigators say at this point, they didn't find any skid marks on the road, ahead of the crash, it does not appear the officer hit the brakes. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. [ applause ] investors are getting ready for another wild ride after friday's free fall on wall street. it dropped 530 points, the largest selloff in years. overseas markets are already open and the news is not good. china's shanghai composite fell 6.5% after opening. in the u.s., the major averages posted their worst week last year in four years. it's not known how much further the dow will fall in the morning. earlier tonight, i spoke with a financial adviser, robert wilson, about what this means with our money. what should people do to prepare themselves for tomorrow? is this a time to panic? >> definitely not a time to panic. the market went down over 500 points, 3%, but it's nothing like a black monday in 1987, which was a 22% drop. everybody should take a breath, realize it's not the end of the world, but definitely think about calling your adviser, just to take a gut check. what's our next plan here? the only thing that could protect you in times of uncertainty, and let's face it, in the market, every day is uncertain, the only thing that can protect you is your discipline. as long as you know why you bought something and at what point you're ready to sell, if you go brought there to educate young people and instead, gave them bad advice. every person should take responsibility for his own actions. i'm sorry and regret what i said that day. the nfl removed the video, calling the remarks inappropriate. he's an analyst at espn. they released a statement. coming up, a crash at pocono. indy car driver in a coma at a local hospital. for now, back to you. new at 11:00, police are asking for your help in finding a robbery suspect in camden county. look at this surveillance video. you can see the man breaking into a business. he steals computers and cash, then leaves. it happened on federal street early thursday morning. anyone who recognizes the man is asked to call camden police. also new at 11:00, a group of crime fighters is in wilmington. marco is leading a group of guardian angels. he called for a local chapter after neighbors in wilmington said nothing else was working. members of the guardian angels from baltimore came to wilmington today to get things started. westchester university found more legionella bacteria, as the school is hours away from starting its fall semester. bacteria was found in cooling towers. those were treated and tests show there's no more bacteria there. now, bacteria is found in hot water systems. the school turned off the systems in several buildings. the university is warning anyone who has pneumonia to tracking changes. we have a front shifting to the east. it'll give us a chance of showers, even a chance of storms into tomorrow. tomorrow will also be a little warmer and more humid. by 9:00 a.m., heading to warork temperatures in the low 70s. philadelphia, starting with clouds moving in. then we look to the west to see the showers and storms organizing themselves. closer to 5:00 p.m., we expect to see some of these storms stretching to the lehigh valley. part of the poconos and western parts of lancaster county. coming up, i'm tracking patchy fog tonight. a closer look at the monday thunderstorms. dry and warm stretch. all the details are coming up in my seven-day forecast. 33 days until the pope arrives in philadelphia for his visit. tomorrow, the city is releasing its online guide called the papal play book. it answers questions for residents and businesses. we sent nbc 10's doug to find out what people think about these concerns. you had quite a range of answers. >> reporter: when you go out and you mentioned pope play book, most people aren't sure what it is or what it does. ♪ as nash and the killer zombie pick pimps sang, they celebrated. >> hail mary up his sleeve. >> reporter: it is a play book for the pope's visit. >> it'll answer some of the questions, but not all. >> reporter: this truck driver had a question. >> traffic and people traveling. how to get from one place to another. >> how we're going to get there. it's called patience. >> papal play book sounds like a joke. >> in the middle of the security box near the art museum, terry wishes she could close her grill during the visit but can't afford to. >> is the food delivery situation going to change? will we be able to have trash picked up at some point? >> reporter: for some, a play book has value. >> i really have no idea what's going on, so it'll be helpful. play by play of what's happening when the pope does come. >> it'll be helpful. right now, i don't know how i'm going to get to visits philadelphia. 10,000 volunteers will be on hand when pope francis comes through. they'll provide translation service, give guests directions and post messages on social media. so far, nearly save the day. more from the men who stopped the gunman on a train. how hackers are costing students money at a local university. pennsylvania attorney general are lining up for the 2016 ballot. without knowing who they're going to be running against. a judge will decide tomorrow as the attorney general will go on trial for perjury and abuse of power. she's charged with leaking grand jury information to a newspaper and lying about it. amid uncertainty over her status, one democrat and two republicans already have declared a candidacy for attorney general. two people were hurt in a hit and run boat crash last night. check out the damage to the boat. new jersey state police are asking for your help tonight to find the person who was driving the other boat. the crash happened around 10:00 on the lake at wood port cove. the other boat is a large, white cabin boat with aluminum prop and will probably have damage. a woman faked her own death to avoid being killed by her ex-boyfriend. the 25-year-old is now charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other crimes. investigators say he choked and punched his ex-girlfriend, then threw her down the stairs. she faked her death by acting out seizures. called 911, indicating the woman injured herself. she's hospitalized and in serious condition. france's highest honor will be awarded to the americans who stopped the gunman on a paris train. here's more on what the men had to say in their first joint conference. >> the three americans spoke to reporters for about 15 minutes, describing what happened on that high-speed train from amsterdam to paris friday night. stone, the man who acted first, said he was asleep when his friend, alek skarlatos, woke him up, pointing out the gunman. it looked like the gun jam and had that's when they took their chance. >> he hit my on the shoulder and said, let's go. ran down, tackled them. we hit the ground. alek grabbed the gun out of his hand, while i put him in a chokehold. >> both alek and spencer are in the military. alek said training didn't kick in until the gunman was subdued. he was a medic, helping to stop the wound. he was thinking of his friends. when they got up, he couldn't let them go alone. >> at times of terror like that, please do something. don't just stand by and watch. >> stone's parents are meeting himg him in paris. all of the heros warming temperatures into monday. we will push above average, tracking fog and a chance of thunderstorms as we head into monday night. this won't affect your monday morning commute. a dry and warm stretch. that'll be nice. temperatures will return back to average. live look at cape may, where we're seeing temperatures in philadelphia at 76 degrees, so it's a mild night out. humidity moved up to 50%. wind speeds out of the north-northwest at about 5 miles per hour. not too bad out there. we're already in the 50s in the poconos. temperatures dropped down to the 60s in allentown. 65 in westchester. 70 in mount holly. if you're at the atlantic city airport, temperatures at 68. dover, 68, as well. closer look at the satellite radar shows quiet conditions on the radar. a few clouds moving in from the west. if i widen the picture, i'll show you this weather disturbance moving through the great lakes. it'll track to the east, that'll give us a chance of thunderstorms as we head to tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. notice all these thunderstorms that will roll through, starting at 5:00 for the lehigh valley and the poconos. as it gets closer to philadelphia, we could see some of these storms tuckering out. we'll keep an eye on that through tomorrow. allow extra time to get home from work or bring your umbrella for the evening part. not during the morning hours or anything like that. we'll stay dry. into tuesday, we dry out again. we'll see more sunshine and drier air coming in. the humidity will go back down. a closer look at tropical storm danny. it was once a category three hurrica hurricane. it continues to weaken, which is a good thing. we're dealing with sustained winds, closer to 45 miles per hour. it is moving to the west at 15 miles per hour. right now, 100 miles east of dominica. closer to 3:00 a.m., in a few hours, we could see this tropical storm push on shore. it will continue to weaken. you'll notice it will become a tropical depression. remnant low around 8:00 p.m. wind speeds drop down to 35 miles per hour. it's going to bring a will the of much-needed rain to the region of the leeward islands. highs around the region tomorrow at 89 degrees in philadelphia. 87 in wilmington. 79 in the poconos. tonight we'll drop to the 50s for the suburbs. patchy fog could stick around tomorrow. seven-day forecast shows evening thunderstorms and we drop back down to the average, around 85 draeg degrees, for most of next week. coming up in sports, aaron continued to dominate with the phillies. there's plenty of controversy around this hit on playing in a preseason game for the rams. over the off season, he was traded to the eagles. bradford's outing came with controversy. here it is. this play, terrell suggs went low on bradford after the handoff and was flagged with a personal foul penalty. bradford led the eagles to a touchdown. 3 of 5 passes for 35 yards. after the game, suggs made some interesting comments about the hit, saying, quote, i could have hit him harder but i eased up. when you run the read option, you know the rules. if you want to run it with a starter quarterback with two knee surgeries, that's on you, end quote. here's how the eagles reacted to the hit. >> i was a little upset. not sure i could probably repeat what i said to him, but like i said, it's part of the game. i'm sure that's not the last time that something like that is going to happen this year, but hopefully it doesn't. >> i don't like it at all. being a player like himself, all pro, you'd think he'd have better sense than that, to take a shot at a quarterback like that in the preseason. just taking a shot at bradford like that anyway, the starting quarterback. >> i don't think looking back that it was anything malicious. i think he's driver is in critical condition in allentown after an accident during an indy car race at pocono international speedway. wilson, a 37-year-old driver from england was struck by a piece of debris from the car of sage. it crashed in the final laps of the race. indy car released a statement, announcing wilson had a severe head injury and was in a coma. this is no further update on his conditi part of the country. tonight, even more resources are being deployed to fight flames that are still out of control. another team of 20 firefighters from new jersey headed west this weekend to help fight the wildfires. that's in addition to the 32 firefighters and three pieces of equipment sent out last week. nbc reports from the front lines. >> reporter: with every fire storm, the toll is rising. in the pacific northwest, over 1 million acres torched, homes burned. the government spending federal money to fight back with everything they've got. air tankers, smoke jumpers and 30,000 crews now out on the lines. >> fire is approaching from that direction, and we're trying to cut it off. >> reporter: tonight, after more than a week of battling over 100 fires, in washington, thousands are still under evacuation. some have refused to leave their homes. you guys chose not to evacuate? >> absolutely. >> reporter: why is that? >> i've been taking care of myself all my life. >> reporter: clyde knows resources are thin. him and his neighbor watched the fire rage in a ridge above their homes. >> i see several structures burning. pretty sad. >> reporter: while clyde isn't a firefighter, as a farmer, he knows about irrigation. in the pocket of this drought, clyde has become a rainmaker on the outskirts of a massive inferno. >> almost like it's raining. 50, 60 gallons a minute in there. the sp >> reporter: high winds can turn any situation dangerous in minutes, like the three firefighters who tried to escape what is being described as a hell storm. a close community still grieving. >> just losing the firemen, and i lost a fellow officer who was a good friend of mine. you don't understand what we give to you when we come every day. >> reporter: this sunday morning, as many search for comfort. >> our hearts are so heavy today. >> reporter: an emotional sermon at the church the firefighter attended with his family. >> he was a hero to those here and the rest of the men who died. >> reporter: the congregation praying for an end of the fires. in the state of washington, every available firefighter called in, every piece of equipment sent out. the president declaring a disaster. the governor sending in the national guard. still, the fires rage on. nbc news, washington. >> announcer: first alert meteorologist brittany shipp is here. >> unfortunately, it's a combination of three things in the region. it's hot, dry and breezy. the humidity levels, down to 10% to 15%. plus the temperatures are well above average. ranging between 87 to 90 degrees. this is also prompting poor air quality. this is going to stay this way for at least the next three to four days. it really is a tough situation for all the folks that live in the pacific northwest. back here at home, we are keeping an eye on the front that's going to transition a little closer to us, as we head into tomorrow afternoon skpecan evening. it'll be a dry start to your monday commute, but as we head to the afternoon, things change. by 9:00 a.m., temperatures at 78 in philadelphia. mid 70s for suburbs to the north and west. dry throughout your lunchtime hour. look what happens at 5:00. you'll notice some of the thunderstorms will start to make their way into our area from reading to lancaster, down to mount pocono. they'll push to philadelphia. 8:00 p.m., that's when we'll start to see a few isolated showers, maybe a few thunderstorms moving into philadelphia and wilmington. i'll let you know how long we'll be dealing with the threat of showers coming up in my seven-day forecast. >> now to a shooting involving teenagers last night. friend of a teenager boy accidentally shot him in the chest in his new jersey home. two of the boys' friends had brought over a handgun and the weapon accidentally discharged while they were handling it. the boy was treated at the hospital and his friends are now facing weapons charges. in north philadelphia, police are investigating a shooting that sent two men to the hospital. both men were shot in the leg this afternoon, and taken to temple. we're waiting to hear on how the men are doing and how the shooting started. two people had to be cut out of this car in philadelphia's oxford circle neighborhood. police got the call about the crash around 9:30 this morning. the car was on its side in the bushes in someone's yard. people in the neighborhood heard the crash and went outside to see what happened. >> i heard a big bang. come out and saw this. >> it's crazy. it's early sunday morning, and you don't know where everybody just came. then you walking by and see a car flipped like that. it's like -- you wondering, you know, if anybody is dead. >> neighbors told us this is a dangerous intersection, and you need to be careful when walking your dog. lawyers will square off in a courtroom tomorrow over the funding of charter schools. the state bid to cut funding at carter schools where special education students in the chester upland school district. pennsylvania governor says the survivor of the school district depends on the cut. the pennsylvania coalition on public charter schools says the plan is a blatant step in killer charter schools. helping families of military members who made the ultimate sacrifice. the club, along with the folds of honor foundation, held a fund raising dinner tonight. the event raised money to establish scholarships for thousands of children or children of soldiers who were killed or severely disabled in service to our country. in preparation for pope francis' visit to philadelphia next month, the city of philadelphia will release a papal visit play book tomorrow. officials say the guide will provide the public with a wide ranging overview of information related to the world meeting of famili families, including transportation options and pet care locations. employees at a furniture store in maine are also hard at work preparing for pope francis' visit. they're building chairs that the pope and four cardinals will use during the visit in philadelphia. now, each chair takes about five hours to create. the same furniture company crafted chairs for pope benedict's 2008 visit to the united states. >> i was shocked. i really was. i wasn't expecting to do that again, twice in my lifetime. >> workers are also and trevor of middle town county got stuck in traffic when trying to get to the hospital last night. the baby just could not wait, so trevor pulled over and then dialed 911. two women heard rose screaming from the car and ran over from a nearby beach club. turns out, they are both emts. now, wasn't long after bella rose was born the parents say baby bella is healthy and doing well. if you're a student at rutgers, you can thank hackers for the rise in your tuition. ahead of the school year, rutgers is spending big money to make sure it won't get hacked again. last year, the school was hacked at least four times. rutgers is spending about $3 million to hire three cyber security firms. that's part of the reason the school said tuition went up more than 2% this year. jimmy carter seriously. >> love and laughter could be the best medicine for former president jimmy carter. he taught sunday school this morning in georgia, only three days after radiation treatment from brain cancer. 90-year-old told the crowd, doctors appear to have gotten all the cancer from his liver but there are still four spots in his brain. if your iphone 6 photos have been coming out blurry, it might not be your phone. a small percentage of the phones have a component that makes the photos blurry. they'll replace defective phones sold between september 2014 and january of this year. apple tomorrow. plus, some tracking of storms into monday night. i'll show you the5>ft timing on that. after the storms, we dry out and temperatures stay warm. it's a nice stretch of weather. live look at relatively cool and even mild in some locations evening out there. we will see a warmer monday. our average for this time of year, 85. we warm to 89 on monday. close to 90, but it's a one-day thing. we drop back down a few more degrees into the rest of next week. satellite radar shows no rain on the map here, which is good. we are going to see a little cloudiness still moving in from the west. fog is going to move into our overnight hours. what we're watching is this weather disturbance that's going to continue to transition east ward toward us as we go through the day tomorrow. you won't need your umbrella in the morning. see what happens at 5:00 p.m. we are going to see a chance of the isolated thunderstorms just outside of our region, just outside of lehigh valley. our direction shifts so we'll get a little more humidity in the air tomorrow, as well. more moisture coming up from the south. by 9:00 p.m., we have a chance of the thunderstorms near philadelphia stretching down to wilmington. they don't stay that organized so there is a chance we won't see a good amount of rainfall or south jersey. it looks like our most promising chance to see the thunderstorms will be second around 10:00 p.m. on saturday. it's the third time there have been twin births in the u.s. in the wild, it's different. >> we know twins are very common. we've seen them in the dens the wild pandas build. >> reporter: for the pandas to be born here, it's bao bao's second birthday. zoo officials, you see two births are rare in captivity, and now, business is getting busier. there are protocols to help out with the duties of motherhood. >> what we're trying to do is swap the cubs and give one at a time each, you know, each have time with mom. while the other one is kept warm in an incubator. >> reporter: with all the attention for visitors of the pandas, there may be time for the neighbors to get private time outside. some of the visitors just came upon the news of the new births. >> i didn't even realize it until i saw it this morning on the news, that they had given birth. we thought, we'll come to the zoo today. >> reporter: others are surprised about how much of an event a birth and birthday are here. >> yeah, we are. it's been really nice actually. >> made a cake for the panda. >> reporter: what they'll be making over the next few weeks are observations that
