St. Josephs Preparatory School is a philadelphia institution. Mayor Michael Nutter and democratic candidate for mayor jim kenney all graduated from the prep. Not to mention past and present city council members, judges, and sports icons like phil martelly. Joining me is father john swop. He was recently named the new president at the prep. Thank you for being here. Pleasure to be here. You grew up in drexel hill. Im a drexel hill guy. How does it feel to be back . Its been a long journey. Its been many, many years, vai, traveling as a jesuit, working on different missions, even internationally, studies all over the country, but ive had some time now in the last important month or so that look back on my years as a jesuit and i think its all coming together and its all for a purpose and im going to bring it all to bear at st. Joes prep. Well talk about some of your International Travel and some of the many connections you have created over the years, but just getting back to st. Joes prep, what kind of changes have you seen in the years youve been gone . What have you seen has changed in the school, challenges you may face as a new president . I think there have been some great changes since i was a student. Theres certainly greater diversity in the curriculum offering for the boys. Responding to what the school sees around us. We need to prepare our young men to really enter a very complex and very demanding world. Perhaps a bit different than when i graduated from the prep in 1972. I think the school is now really looking out at the city. The jesuits made the decision when we had that terrible file at st. Josephs prep in the mid60s to rebuild right there at 17th and gerard. One thing is keeping the school in the same place. Another thing is basically lowering your guard and becoming more engaged in the city, and i think our school has done that, and i really look forward to helping to carry that forward. I should let our viewers know in terms of full disclosure, i have three sons that all went to st. Josephs prep, so i have some connection as a prep father. But over the years as things change in that area the jesuits decided to keep the school there, and some think that possibly thats one of the reasons, one of the secrets to st. Josephs prep, that its right there in the heart of the city and it never left and thats maybe part of the dna in the school among its students and why it has created so many top leaders. Well, vai, i think it really reflects, too, sort of the heart and soul of the jesuit order. We are urban animals. Jesuits are dedicated to the city. Our greatest initiatives around the world are all in the city, and theres a focus of our institutions on the city. So it does reflect kind of the spirit of the jesuits. I think when our young men come to us, of course, theres a certain naive tte as a 14yeard coming from the environment of an Elementary School and theyre thrust into the city. So see the transformation that happens with them, i think one of the great advantages of the prep, kind of the a tenor that marks our boys when they graduate is they are confident and they feel engaged with their city and having met so many people from all different parts of our area, theyre from the northeast, from south philadelphia, from new jersey, from the western suburbs, and i think mixing it up in that way really develops a great sense of self, a confident young man. The demographics were always mixed. They had kids who were firemens kids, cops kids, ceos kids who were there. Has that changed over the years or has it been the same . I think that has changed a bit over the years. With increasing tuition and you have all of those students who came to us in the 30s, 40s, 50s have moved on and been successful in their lives. You lose some of that with rising tuition and situations like that. I think were moving in the opposite direction. Those alums who had their sons come to us, they realize that when theyre paying their division, theyre paying a division of their son but theres a great commitment to have a very, very Diverse Community at the prep and our diversity students are students of color, that percentage of our total student body is increasing. The motto, of course, a man for others is the motto among the young men who go there, and i see so many of the graduates reaching back. Mayor Michael Nutter i think the day after he won the election, he came back and made his first appearance at st. Josephs prep. Jim kenney, very vocal about his love of the prep and his respect for the prep, and then i see this in young graduates who go off to college and they come back and they teach they spend a year or two teaching at the prep. Why what have you guys done that has instilled this commitment from your graduates to come back and to give back . I think our alums love to give back to the prep, but they just love to give in general, vai, i would say. You look at a man like Michael Nutter and jim kenney and their allegiance of graduates like them, but they have a higher profile because of their political position and responsibilities. They look at the city and want to see change. Someone who thinks that way, theres something going on in them. They wake up in the morning and they look around and they see the status quo, but they have another idea in their head. Theyre seeing something that no one else is seeing, and theres a certain unreasonability about a person like that. They refuse to have their imagination domesticated by selfinterest. Theyre looking beyond theyre looking beyond themselves, looking beyond what they see around them and they have an idea for a better city. Thats what an example of those two alums. Theyre both fiery about it, passionate about it. One would say a little unreasonable about it because youre pushing for change, something better, a greater common good, greater participation of all philadelphians in our civic life, in our economy. I think thats just theres something about a jesuit graduate that they represent. Lets talk about the jesuits and specifically about your International Travel. You spent time in chile. While you were there, of course, pope francis is coming in september, and hell be here in philadelphia. You had kind of an odd connection to him, and not necessarily in the church but you were traveling on vacation when you first met him. What was the meeting and what was the connection . I was, vai. One of my many travels, i did live in chile for many years and, of course, theres just that lower part of the andes in south america separates the two countries in the far Southern Cone of latin america, and we went over as a group of young jesuits. It was during our winter vacation, and we went over to argentina, crossed over the andes by bus and went to a vacation house there. We were sort of dragged in there and there was another group using the house which was quite large and it was father and three jesuit friends were there for a weekend so i had a chance to shake his hand and meet him. What was your impression of him as a young jesuit priest . I barely you know, young people are pretty impressionable, but didnt make that much of an impression. We didnt spend time together, didnt have meals together, but i did shake his hand and say hello, just shared what are you doing . Where was i from . He was the head of the jesuits at the time in argentina. Could you guess then that he was some day become a pope. That wasnt a chance. I would have never suspected that. And you guys have issued an invitation. Hopefully youre keeping your fingers crossed that he will come by and visit st. Joes prep when hes here. We still have a few strings to pull. I havent started by whole jesuitical approach to that. I think we will be able to make a good case for him to swing by especially in his schedule with the gaps. Hopefully we would be able to get him to come. Were going to have students from over 40 jesuit schools from around the country in our program called to philly for francis, which is really its really extraordinary. One of the great things about the prep is its part of this network of more than 50 schools from around the country. They will be there and these young men and women will be on the same page, there to see the holy father and find each other as well. There will be a couple Million People but i dont know that hell get a bigger cheer than he will if he comes to st. Joes prep. It would be wonderful. Prep football, theyre back in power. I know youre a big football fan. They kind of dropped off a little bit there, but theyre back in force now. They are back state champions, can you believe that . And state champions also i believe in golf and i think one other sport. Im just now getting up to speed on all this, vai, as you can imagine, but its a great tradition of football at the prep starting from the time when your sons were at the prep with gil brooks and now under gabe infante. And the prep is looking forward to a great season this year. We will have coach infante here in a couple weeks to join us. Father john swope were so pleased you came to visit with us. Glad youre back here and i know the kids at the prep are glad to have you there. We appreciate it and good luck to you. Thank you very much. Pleasure to be here. Many are wondering how road blocks and closed security zones will affect their ability to get around the city and others are fascinated about how such a big undertaking happens. With me is security expert bob berzinchek an assistant professor at Pearce College and he has a long background in policing and security. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Just tell us how bad its going to be for people in center city and people in winwood. Were in a good place. Commissioner ramsey has been through this multiple times. This has been in place. National Management System since the 70s. We already have a road map. We have a lot of moving parts. We have an Emergency Action plan that will be in place. It will be seamless for folks to get in. It will be a little inconvenient but folks need to have some patience. What kind of tips could you give our viewers, folks, so theyre not trapped in their homes or so they can get around and get to work and where they need to be that weekend specifically . Well, just plan in advance. You know, very similar to 76 and 95, plan in advance. If you need to be on 76, youre going to have traffic. Look at septa. Look at the number of different transportation modes for you to get in. What can the local community do to help the security effort . There are things the community can do to assist Law Enforcement or security folks that are going to be canvassed all over the area. If you see something, say something. If you see something in your community that doesnt fit, call local Law Enforcement. Just be village ligilant. Could you make a guess as to what might be the biggest Security Threat when the pope is here . Lone wolf. That is one of the major things that in the United States that the special agent from philadelphia is actually outlined as a major threat to this event. I went yesterday with a photographer and we went and visited the prison where hes going to be and just looking at how secure that facility is, but it left me wondering, how do you provide security for the pope when hes inside a prison like that . Im sure hell have tons of people but just, you know, walk us through how that happens. Its multiagency collaboration. I interned with the secret service so i can tell you the secret service is the lead on this. The National Security event, theyre going to work with the fbi, Philadelphia Police department in concert with philadelphia prison system. So they already have everything orchestrated. Theyve exercised it. Theyve tabletoped it. Its going to be very seamless because the secret service does this on a daytoday basis with the president. Whats going to be a bigger and tougher task to secure, the popes visit or the Democratic National convention . Well, vai, im not going to allude to exactly what affiliation im with, but ill essentially say that its a tossup. Really . Securing your one man and securing an event where theres tons of people that are here who are dignitaries themselves. Again, theres a lot of moving parts. Theres more moving parts for the dnc, however, its the same road map. You dont know exactly. Its always the unknown and the unknown is the lone wolf and those folks who want to commit hard to others. Can you give us a guess or perhaps you can just tell us the numbers you think of security people that it takes to take care to handle an event like the popes visit. Id say hundreds. Weve looked at the swiss guards, theyre going to work in concert with the secret service so thats where the incident command structure comes back so they can communicate with each other. There be over hundreds of regional Law Enforcement and nationally. Bob, thank you very much for coming in. Its very insightful to have us give us some information for us and possibly to help us out, get around, move around the city that week. We appreciate it. When we come back, a form of sticker shock. Bars and restaurants will soon tell you how many calories are in that daiquiri you just ordered. And guess what . Yeah, its a bunch. This is nbc10 issue. Oh my gosh, its the guy from last night. Frozen margaritas, daiquiris, you name it. Popular summer drinks at local bars and restaurants, but customers may soon be in for a big surprise when they learn how many calories that theyre tossing back. New rules that begin next year require that calorie counts be posted. With me is alba mather, and shes an attorney who represents the beverage industry. Thanks for joining us, alba. Thank you for having me. Tell us how this is going to work and will the calorie counts be posted, be listed on the menus right next to the drinks . Yes. If you live in philadelphia, weve gotten pretty used and are a little fortunate in having calorie disclosures particularly for foods in chain restaurants throughout our city, but what this new regulation is going to do and its coming at the federal level is that that same disclosure is going to apply to our alcoholic drinks that are on menu items. As you said, when youre looking at buying a daiquiri or a margarita, youre going to have to face some hard realities about how many calories are actually in that drink. Will it be like sticker shock where people are looking at this and shocked at how many calories are in some of the drinks that they think nothing of getting one or two or three . I think there certainly can be. The truth is that as consumers with our food, labeling requirements when you go to the grocery store, we all have a better understanding of how much goes into our normal food items but the truth is that alcohol, if you buy a beer, you buy a glass of wine, there is no requirement that calories are actually on the label, so for many consumers, this is going to be the first time that theyre looking and having to understand that a very great craft beer theyre very interested in is, you know, has a calorie count of 250 calories as opposed to a miller lite or another light beer thats only about 96 calories. As far as bar owners, restaurant owners, is this going to have a Chilling Effect on their bottom line . Will people pay for less if they see for less drinks if they see how many calories are in the drinks . It depends. First of all, the regulation doesnt apply to everybody. It only applies to chain restaurants that has 20 or more outlets where they have a standard menu item. So your local bars, your local taverns, they are not going to be subject to this regulation. However, your large chilis, your franchisetype institutions, i think they may see and are going to have to react to some of these very not only high alcohol but some high sugar drinks like the daiquiris, like the margaritas, or at least to provide a little bit more of an option for the consumers where they have that. This is related also to the vending industry, vending machines will have to yeah, vending machines are also going to do that. Thats going to be much more on the food side just because there really is not vending for alcohol, but it applies to vending Machine Operators as well. Real quickly, when does the law go into effect . It will go into effect at the end of next year. Originally it was supposed to go into effect this year but the fda who is the Enforcement Agency behind this in response to the need from the industry for more time for compliance has given them another year. Thank you very much. Appreciate you coming in. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Next, the little boy who made bigtime history at chop. The youngest person to get a double hand transplant.
