nbc 10 breaking news. fire forces people out of this high-rise apartment building in south jersey. we'll take you live to the scene in just minutes. new developments in the case of the philadelphia moj and her baby both stabbed over the weekend. police say they've made an arrest and the suspect knows the victims very well. nbc 10 first alert radar is tracking showers and thunderstorms moving through the area. some spots have seen heavy downpours and the threat for more wet weather is ahead for today. this is nbc 10 news today. i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. good thing the phillies are on the road with the scene at citizens bank park. a lot of you getting several inches of rain. let's check in with meteorologist bill henley. >> the heavy downpours continue in the airy. the light rainfall at the nbc 10 studios, the clouds overhead. the heaviest rain has moved on now in delaware and south jersey. look at dover. thunderstorms and heavy rainfall through central kent county. that's part of the line that extends into new jersey. the heaviest rain just by dover right now. see there has been some thunder and lightning, not a tremendous amount of lightning. you see a flash every so often in camden and gloucester county, the heavy rainfall in the hammonton area. it's on the way to the shore. keep an umbrella handy. it's not going to be an all-day rainfall but we'll see scattered showers and thunderstorms at the 6:00 hour. 73 degrees with mostly cloudy skies. we'll get breaks in the clouds. look at the temperatures taking off at 77 degrees at 9:00 and into the low 80s by lunch time and during the noontime hour in fact right around midday, we'll start to see more showers and thunderstorms popping up. not an all-day rainfall and we'll get sunshine to warm temperatures up this afternoon. we'll go through it neighborhood by neighborhood with the future futurecast when i come back in ten minutes. let's check in with jessica boyington with traffic. out on 422 around trooper road, everything moving along fine right here. roadways a little bit damp. so no real delays there. out in kentnersville, your alternates take 611 or durham road to get on by that scene out the door on the 42 freeway. rain actively falling right there as well. the northbound drive times are still doing okay from 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge. only about a five-minute trip. the rest of the area breaths, doing just fine the tac pal and the burlington bristol is okay. we are following breaking news for you this morning, a high raise apartment fire in camden county. >> people were forced out of their homes in the middle of some of the heavy rain there and a firefighter had to have medical attention on the scene. nbc 10's katy zachry is live in pennsauken. what's the update now? >> reporter: as you can see behind me, most of the people have been let back inside cooper river plaza apartments. at the height of it about 350 people were evacuated from this building after fire broke out on the first floor. we saw many of them for the last few hours out on the street in the pouring rain seeking shelter under trees and overpasses while firefighters were in the building making sure it was safe enough for them to return. the fire broke out around midnight according to the pennsauken fire chief. he was on scene and gives me the latest information. they did find fire on the first into are in a common area. they evacuated more than 350 people living here. some did have difficulty getting down stairs with disabilities. firefighters and emts did help them. fire did not travel beyond the first floor but smoke did. firefighters spent several hours this morning checking carbon monoxide levels on each floor before letting the people back inside. >> it's starting to become difficult because the rain and the wind just picked up out of nowhere. before it was bearable because you know, it was calm. now it's rainy. >> reporter: again most of the people have been let back inside. we are waiting for a few people to trickle in. firefighters, again, have spent the last few hours checking carbon monoxide levels. we're told they did not check any carbon monoxide. the cause of the fire is under investigation. one firefighter did have to be treated for exhaustion. we're told he is going to be okay. coming up in the next half hour you'll hear first-hand accounts from people who live here about what it was like when the fire broke out. reporting live in pennsauken katy zachry nbc 10 news. 4:36 and 71 degrees. a philadelphia man arrested in maryland last night few faces charges for allegedly stabbing his wife an their 1-year-old baby daughter. police arrested stephen burton. he's facing charges that include aggravated assault. a neighbor told nbc 10 that she heard danecia burton screaming from in her home on dallas street in west oak lane early yesterday morning. the neighbor rushed over to see what was wrong. that's when she says she saw stephen burton attacking his wife. >> when she let me in she was leaning against the wall with her arms sliced up. she told me to go check her daughter because he stabbed her, too. when i went upstairs the baby was just laying in all her blood. >> danecia burton suffered several stab wounds. both she and her 1-year-old daughter desiree remain in critical condition. 4:37. lock your car doors. that's what mr. ess in norristown are telling people to do to stop thieves. they're putting the message up in lights, too. police set up the flashing signs in part of the town there in norristown. police are investigating dozens of car break-ins, many happened near the regatta circle apartments. authorities say the best way to avoid becoming a victim lock the car doors and take your keys out of ignition. happening today, a new health center will hold a ribbon cutting in lehigh county. the lehigh valley health network is opening a new center in fogelsville. it provides family and pediatric care obstetrics and gynecology x-rays and ultrasounds. nearly three dozen women have accused bill cosby of assault. and he turns falling trees into one of a kind objects. now a local artist is out of business because of what thieves did. grab your umbrella as you head out the door. we have showers and we're still tracking thunderstorms this afternoon and the possibility again of more thunderstorms. we've seen the heavy rain move through philadelphia. now it's pounding portions of delaware and south jersey. still raining in philadelphia, 71 degrees. the humidity 90%, no surprise. s there a chance we'll see another round of showers through the midday hours. cloudy skies over philadelphia delaware and south jersey, we have a damp start this morning. the heaviest rainfall just clearing dover right now. we'll be moving into delaware bay, thunderstorms are active in gloucester county. the heavier showers in gloucester county are moving towards atlantic county. they're starting to move into that area atlantic city cape may, expect to see the rainfall while it will be coming to an end in philadelphia and wilmington. j)q futurecast shows 10:00 this morning, a few spots possible on the radar screen and then the showers pop up this afternoon. heavy downpours expected later today. could lead to some localized flooding. but then the break for this evening and once we dry out tonight, the heat is on for tomorrow. the seven-day forecast when i come back in ten. you may want to give yourself extra time if you're leaving soon. >> jessica boyington has a look at the roads and the conditions for you. jessica? >> good morning, chris and tracy. we're out on 95 starting off around girard avenue. everything moving along just fine. we are dealing with slippery conditions and ponding throughout some areas on major highways. you can still see not really reflected in that drive time, tacking on three minutes or so. there's a 14-minute total. if you're headed out the door on 202, rain falling in the distance as well. 11 minutes if you're headed north or southbound. not a lot of traffic through that area as well from 30 up towards the schuylkill expressway. we are still watching an accident scene in towamencin valley forge road and morris road. mass transit, currently no problems for new jersey transit, septa or patco. we'll check in with more drive times and wet roads coming up. the case against bill cosby is about to become even more public. >> we'll tell you what dozens of his accusers are doing together to make sure they're not forgotten in the court of public opinion. ahead, we'll tell you how badly potholes are still hitting drivers in the wallet. four firefighters in california are recovering from injuries they suffered fighting a wildfire that scorched 1,500 acres. according to a fire spokesman it's unclear exactly what those crew members were doing when they were burned in the fire. firefighters say this one is particularly tough to fight because of drought conditions and rough terrain. >> in a fast-moving fire obviously things do happen. >> dozens of people were forced to leave their homes in nevada county california there because of a mandatory evacuation in place. as of this morning, the fire is just 15% contained. meantime new information about a fire at a hotel swimming pool on the las vegas strip. the rooftop pool at the cosmopolitan hotel re-opened yesterday, a day after flames and smoke sent guests running. some hotel rooms damaged by smoke are still closed. two people were treated for smoke inhalation. investigators are looking for the cause of that fire. 5 women are on the cover of the latest "new york" magazine which hits shelves today. there's a portfolio of port trats and group pictures. the woman behind the spread noreen malone says her work illustrates the scale and diversity of the abuse that accusers say cosby inflicted upon them. 4:46. 457ing ing happening today, vice president joe biden and cuomo announce proposals to improve airports. fiat chrysler has to offer to buy back more than 500,000 ram pickup trucks. this is part of a deal with safety regulators to settle problems in about two dozen recalls. those trucks have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control. some previous repairs have been unsuccessful. to get those cars off the road fiat chrysler agreed to the buy back. league officials of the nfl will compare pregame pressure readings with random halftime and post-game inspections. of course this policy comes in the wake of deflategate, alleged football tampering by the new england patriots last season. 4:47. the big game hunt continues in milwaukee, wisconsin this morning. police are still trying to find a lion on the loose. the city has been on alert ever since cell phone video of the animal surfaced last week and over the weekend people at a cookout say they spotted the lion and it wasn't alone. >> first it was one, then a baby came out and it looked for a little bit. i was really scared. >> it's a huge mystery there. the milwaukee zoo says all of its lions are present and accounted for. police say they last saw the big cat early sunday morning. an update on a story out of our south jersey bureau. an artist who lost his tools to thieves now says that help is coming to replace what was taken someone stole brian ackley's chain saws from his shed in upper deerfield township cumber county. he makes art carvings in trees damaged by storms. since the theft, a local farm store gave him two chain saws on credit and other people have come by with donations. >> i don't even know this guy and he's offering me a chain saw. this is good stuff. >> the outpouring of concern from the community has been very humbling. >> and we're still checking with police to see if they've made any progress in that theft case there. happening today in north wildwood the annual -- seventh annual beach day for people with downs syndrome. the beach patrol and the 21 down nonprofit are hosting event. families are invited to lend support. the event is schedule for lincoln avenue on the beach from 11:00 to 4:00. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> almost ten minutes before 5:00. showers and thunderstorms to start with this morning. it's rain falling in center city. that's a live view from the comcast center. it's 71 degrees. a light breeze. the winds won't be strong except in and around thunderstorms. we saw the thunderstorms roll through philadelphia first thing this morning. the line of storms moved on into new jersey. a light rainfall for philadelphia now. look at the heavy downpours in ken the county and moving towards sussex county across delaware bay and into south jersey burlington county gloucester camden counties have seen the rainfall. now it's cumberland into atlantic county getting the rain. so far cape may and atlantic city is dry. that's a temporary situation. that line is on its way to you. mostly cloudy day. won't be an all-day rainfall but occasional showers and thunderstorms. in fact, there's a good chance of more storms popping up as we head into the afternoon hours. clouds, 80s this afternoon. up to 87 degrees in philadelphia possible if we get a little bit more sunshine. otherwise it will be in the middle 80s today. that changes tomorrow. sunshine will be bright hot and humid. 91 degrees. that's the first day of what will likely be an extended heat wave. 96 wednesday and really steamy on thursday. the humidity takes a leap and that will help fuel some late-day showers and thunderstorms thursday. not quite as hot, nor as humid on friday 92 the high. another hot one saturday and back into the 90s with more humidity returning for sunday. all right, bill. nine minutes before 5:00 right now. we know you need your umbrellas as you head out the door and maybe extra time. you don't know what you'll encounter. >> thunderstorms bill showed us in south jersey. nbc 10's first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington is watching that for us. >> we're dealing with the same situation on the schuylkill expressway, chris and tracy, right around city avenue is where we're looking live right now. you can see as vehicles drive through, you can see water spraying out from underneath. we know the roadways are not just damp. give yourself a little bit of extra time. kintnersville, bucks county a downed tree is closing lennonburg road and route 32 easton road. a 15-minute drive time at 16 minutes at the most if you're headed northbound or southbound from the schuylkill up towards 95. mass transit, currently no problems or delays this morning. as of yet for new jersey transit, septa or the patco speed line. that's a great alternate so far. chris? a new report shows car owners are paying billions of dollars in repairs because of the nation's bad roads. according to transportation research and lobbying group trip more than a quarter of the nation's roads are in bad shape. we should mention this report comes out as the senate is debating a very hotly contested transportation bill that would fund repairs to roadways across the nation. philadelphia police are still looking for the driver involved in a deadly hit and run. it happened late last night. this morning, they have a valuable new clue. we'll tell you what
