Everybody was wondering why would this guy come to this theater and just start randomly shooting people. Its too early to have any of those answers yet. Reporter police havent released the name of the shootererer or or the vem sictims. Two teacherser allister martin and generaljenna mow were being treated at the theaterer. They shielded one another from the gun fire and pulled the fire alarm. Today is a day that angerers and saddens all of us. You never imagine we never imagine it would happen in louisiana. Reporter overnight amy schumer, the star of trainwreck responded to the shooting tweeting my heart is broken and all my thoughts and prayers are with everyone in louisiana. Investigators looking into seeing if there are connections between the shooter and the vip s victims, anything in his background. Matt . Officials say about a hundred people were inside the theater at the time of the shooting. Many more in the movie complex. Two of them are with us now. Gentlemen, good morning to you. Good morning. Supposed to be a quiet night out at the move sis. How are you both doing . Doing more all right. How about you guys . Were fine. You were in the theater across from where the shooting took place. Did you hear shots is this how did you know it was going on . I was sitting more toward the middle of the theater. I didnt hear gunshots. When the movie began the alarm system went off and a p. A. Announcerer said to evacuate through the nearest exit immediately. When you evacuated, did you find yourself in a shared hallway where people were streaming out of the theater where the shooting occurred . No, sir. They told us to evacuate to the nearest exit and our nearest exit led us outside is. Did you see people coming out of the theater . Yes, sir. Jalen, had you heard any shots . Yes, sir. I did hear shots. How long did they last . Well it was i heard three pops. Then following those three pops 10 or 15 seconds later, like he said the sirens went off. Then the p. A. System saider for everyone to evacuate the building. It was reported the shooter tried to leave the theater with the wave of people fleeing from him then saw police in the hallway, turned went back inside and took husbandis own life. Did you hear that final gunshot . Possibly. While we were outside the building thats when i was closer to the building. I did hear a bunch of gunshots. Any of those gunshots could have been him taking his life. Kiefer this is not the first time Something Like this has happened. We think back to 2012 and the Movie Theater shooting in awe are row are a aurora colorado. Was this in the back of your mind . The fear of an event like this . No, sir. I normally dont go to the theater often. It was one of the last things i expected. I was with my brother and a friendment when the p. A. Alarm went off that was what i said. I had an odd feeling. I said i feel like there was a shooting. We hurried up and got out. Jalen, anything like this crossed your mind going into a building or Movie Theater . Not at all. I have never experienced anything like this before. That was the last thing i thought would happen when my friends texted me and said hey, lets go to the movies. Were you able to see the injured . Three people are are dead including the shooter. Were you able to see any of the others wounded in this . I didnt see any brought out from the theater except for one when we evacuated the theater there was a middleaged female lying down. She was shot in her leg. There was blood. She was on the curb. When they asked what happened she said she was shot this the theater and guys brought her out and put her on the curb. Were happy youre all right. Guys thank you very much for talking this morning. We appreciate it. Thank you. Still so many questions this morning including the identity of the gunman. Lets go to sean henry, former executive assistant director of the fbi. Sean good morning. It is the early hours of the investigation. Where do you think investigators are focused now . You know savannah it starts with the motivation. Why did this occur . Who is this man . What was the reason for him walking into a crowded theater, open ing up fire indiscriminately without any clear target. Thats what investigators are looking at. They are going through his social media. They will look at his electronic devices. By now they have already executed a search warrant on his residence, his vehicle. They are talking to coworkers family members, et cetera. We have so little to go on. Hes a 58yearold white man. It isnt exactly the profile of the mass shooting we have seen in recent years of a young man. Do you make anything of the fact of his olderer age . Again, it comes down to his mote vaegs. Is this somebody im purely speculating. Who knows what caused this. Is he going through a marital problem and his exwife or spouse is involved with somebody at the movies . Until you understand what the motivation is youre not going to be able to assess specific issues like his age and how it may have influenced this. This is going to be a long investigation over the next couple of weeks. They are at the very early stages and investigators are really just searching for clues at this point to give them a head start on where to continue to focus. These are the early hours for hour. Shawn henry, good to have you here. Thank you so much. Well have more on louisiana, the victims, gunman and investigation. We expect a News Conference and well have a live interview with governor bobby jindal. Matt . Another breaking story overnight. The Justice Department considering a request to open a criminal inquiry into how government information was handled related to Hillary Clintons use of a private email account while she was serving as secretary of state. Nbc White House Correspondent Kristen Welker has the latest. Good morning to you. Reporter matt good morning to you. The Justice Department confirms this morning that it is looking into and considering a request to look into whether government information was mishandled in connection with the personal email account that clinton used when she was secretary of state. This news was first reported by the New York Times last night. The Justice Department has not decided whether it is going to pursue the investigation. The inquiry was first reporteded and sparked by two inspectors general who had concerns that her email account contained hundreds of potentially classified pail. The former secretary of state said there were to classified emails on her private server. The New York Times initially suggested that clinton was the subject of the probe but later softened the language to suggest others not clinton herself, were being investigated. The Campaign Said contrary to the initialer story which has already been significantly revised she followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials. As has been reported on multiple occasions any released emails deemed classified by the administration have been done so after the fact and not at the time they were transmitted. Clintons campaign has been dogged by the use of the private email account during her time as secretary. She s turned over 55,000 pages of emails which the department is reviewing and releasing in batches. Matt back to you. Kristen, thank you very much. Turning now to the current secretary of state, john kerry who found himself on capitol hill on thursday pierce teersly defending the land park agreement to limit Irans Nuclear program. Hes calling it a good deal for the world, but some lawmakers arent so sure. I believe you have been fleeced. You have been bamboozled and the American People will epeepay for it. It isnt a unicorn arrangement involving irans complete capitulation. Thats a fantasy. Plain and simple. Secretary kerry, great to have you here. Good to be with you. Bamboozled outmanoeuvred, outnegotiated. Were you fleeced . There is a lot of politics going on, matt. The more people learn about the agreement the more people are learning this is the only viable alternative to be able to control irans already existing nuclear program. People forget president obama came into office and when i became secretary of state iran already had in the tens of thousands of centrifuges. Today already had enough material for 10 to 12 bombs. We have rolled the program back and provided a capacity to have inspectors Going Forward so well know what iran is doing. Something else only way to control it. Something else is iran cheated in the past. Sure. They violated international law. I dont know anybody who trusts them. There is no trust. No no. This is not based on trust. Thats whats important to understand. Everything in this agreement is verifiable. It is a process by which well know what they are doing. If we dont, we have the options available to us that we have today. Except one of the most controversial aspects of the deal is if we expect the iranians are cheating and not abiding by the rules of the deal and we think it is happening at a certain site they can wait 24 days before allowing International Inspectors into the site. Why would we allow that to happen . Nuclear material the department of energy has done tests. They have had people sandblast, paint over concrete, do anything to nuclear ter. You cant get rid of it. Years later, we have discovered Nuclear Material in places where people were trying to hide it. 24 days is nothing. Some with the aiea say portions can be concealed and cleaned up. Not this ter. Not what you need to make a bomb. With respect to a bomb you have to have fiss is iile material enriched uranium. You have to have it. The only way is to go through the enrichment process which, by the way, we have a limitation on their enrichment process. Once they begin to enrich at a higherer level all the bells and whistles go off. And that well know because we have 24 7 inspection i want to bring it into a way we can understand it. If the police in this city suspected guys down the block were running a meth lab this is not drugs. And we give them 24 days before we go in to look at it. Its so different from that. This is nuclear radiates. You have the ability for a thousand years. This is not something you can flush down the toilet. Its not possible. Israel hates this deal. Some do. The former head of shinbet. The former Prime Minister doesnt like the deal. I understand that. Lots of people in israel understand this is the best way to proare seed in order to roll back irans program and make israel safer. Do you think because many in israel including the Prime Minister are are uncomfortable with the deal that the its now making it more likely than two years ago, for example, that israel meeting attempt some unilateral action military or cyber attack against iran . That would be an enormous mistake. A huge mistake with grave consequences for israel and the region. I dont think its necessary. The fact is we will have for 15 years a restraint on iran that absolutely prevents it from developing a weapon. They cant enrich beyond 3. 67 . You cant make a bomb at 3. 67 . They will have only 300 kilograms in a stock pile of enriched uranium. You cant make a bomb with that. Inspections on a daily basis the in their facilities. If israelis take action where would it leave us the . Would we support israel . Would the treaty go up up in smoke . If they bombed them, surement. I presume iran would say this is why we need a bomb. Then israel doesnt have the ability to stop nor do we unless we went to war and eye anyway annihilated iran which i dont are hear people talking about. With a norle mall operation you are talking about rolling back the program for two three years. Then what do you do . And what will irans response be . Likely to decide now you have proven why we need a bomb and tell dig deeper and go get it. What people forget is this is not something that may happen this the future matt. Iran already has enough if i material for 10 to 12 bombs. We are rolling it back. That headachemakes the world safer. We have a oneyear breakout for ten years which is eight months more than today. Well have more time to respond. I think as people look at this they will see the alternative is to have no inspectors not know what iran is doing. Go back to where they are today with the ability to make a bomb and then you will hear everybody say, oh we have to bomb then now. Since i have the secretary of state across from me let me ask you about former secretary of state hillary clinton. There is a call for her use of a private email for sensitive information. As somebody who knows what information is handled by someone in your position is this politics or is she in real trouble . Oh, all i thoughknow is what i have read and learned today, this morning. Inspector generals operate independently. Thats why they were put there. I dont know at all. What i do know is in the state department we have a team working extremely hard to get all of the required emails out, public as fast as possible. I cant wait for that to happen. Im sure hillary cant eitherer. Im sure it will be cleared up with the final release as we get it done. We are working hard to get it done as fast as possible. Secretary of state john kerry. Always a pleasure to have you here. Glad to be with you. Thank you very much. Savannah . Well turn to al and we have natalie here. Well get a check of the weather. And we are going to prom. Have a great day. Matt . All right buddy. Thank you very much.
