but both mayors have much in common. both are democrats, both preside over lehigh valley cities on the economic rebound and both notably hired campaign consultant michael fleck, who sources say recently shuttered his consulting firm and left town. meantime citizens in reading are left asking questions.h >> anybody was looking up to him and now this is a shock for us. >> reporter: as this investigation moves forward, we have learned allentown's mayor has suspended his campaign for the united states senate and reading's mayor recently lost a primary election to democrat wally scott. randy gyllenhaal, nbc 10 news. local politicians weighed in on the raids that rocked both these cities. the state representative had this to say. >> reading is having problems. does it make allentown look better or worse. this is no good for anybody right now. >> count on nbc 10 to follow both of these investigations. the confederate flag no longer flying at the state house in south carolina. thousands of people cheering as the flag was lowered this morning for the last time. hours later, a crane pulled the flagpole from the ground. the confederate flag is now at the south carolina state museum where it will be on display. the naacp will open its national convention in philadelphia tomorrow. today, nbc 10 was there as organizers watched the historic event on tv. nbc 10's cydney long talked to them about the importance of the flag and recent police clashes will have on this year's meeting. >> reporter: 11-year-old treasure white is in philadelphia for advocacy that is 95 years older than she is and she's witnessing real change with the fall of the confederate flag at the start of the naacp convention. >> many people were hung and lynched under that flag and that's why i don't like that flag. >> reporter: attendees, delegates and volunteers will welcome president obama and former president clinton next week to pray for racial justice. >> especially for the nine in south carolina who lost their life by someone who thought this flag really meant something. >> reporter: rose kenney grew up in the south and feared anyone displaying the flag on a truck or teeshirt. >> i still get that chill, you know, when that comes up. i remember the ku klux klan so for those of us who actually lived through this, this means a lot to us. >> this is a historic gathering. >> reporter: activists will focus on voting rights education, reducing poverty and stopping excessive force and tension with police in communities nationwide. >> the hometown of the naacp in baltimore, maryland go up in flames. >> reporter: some 8,000 people will bring $10 million in economic revenue to the city during the naacp conference but the mission will be to inspire and collaborate on real change not just talk about it. >> to bring about a fundamental change in the course of history in these united states. why? because we are the naacp and this is what we endeavor to do because this is what we have done. >> reporter: from center city, cydney long, nbc 10 news. new at 6:00 police in new castle county accuse three teens of stealing a stolen confederate flag. we have heard about the theft on wednesday night. police say the teens stole the flag from this home in newark and vandalized the homeowner's truck and boat. they are now facing charges. this evening, confirmation it was a tornado that whipped through part of berks county last night. the 105 mile per hour winds destroyed the school. you can see from sky force 10 the roof was torn off, classrooms leveled. the school's principal was inside that school when the tornado hit. >> i remember a bang and then just being on the floor and hearing noise and things on top of me. it never felt heavy so i don't know what was on top of me.dqç i think ceiling tiles. then once it was quiet, kind of found my way up and over what was left of a wall and down the hallway. >> amazing she wasn't hurt. just minutes ago, the national weather service confirmed a tornado hit new castle county, delaware last night. sky force 10 flying over some of the damage in new castle this morning. the tornado tore down trees and ripped homes off their foundation. today, picture-perfect weather down the shore. look at this. >> for anyone headed there tomorrow, you're in for a great weekend. nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us with his first alert forecast. >> the other end of our area the pocono mountains, that will be a spectacular weekend. camel beach right now, loads of people in the pool. there will be even more than that tomorrow because the weather will just continue to be great. we hardly have a cloud in the sky across the area but back to the west there is some moisture so some clouds moving in to at least part of the area during the day tomorrow. especially in the morning. that northwest wind keeping things nice and comfortable, low humidity here. it's 84 degrees in philadelphia and in northeast philly it's just about the same at the shore because of that land breeze although lewes has a wind off delaware bay. that's why it's a little cooler. temperatures dropping through the 70s as we go through the evening hours and even into the 60s in some of the suburbs by 11:00 tonight. we'll see where those clouds and maybe a couple showers will come this weekend with the seven-day in a few minutes.dx traffic in delaware is moving again after a train derailment snarled the start of rush hour. four freight cars went off the tracks near lancaster pike at dupont road in wilmington. three of the cars were empty, another was carrying steel plates. the two workers on the train not hurt. advocates for legalizing marijuana have just finished a protest in center city philadelphia. it's called the smoke down prohibition. they smoked pot openly. they also marched to the offices of elected leaders to push for the legalization of medical marijuana in pennsylvania. police didn't intervene and no one was arrested. a guilty plea today for the northeast philadelphia man who left a dog locked in a basement without food and water. jeffrey collins will not serve jail time for the december crime. he received two years probation. he has to pay $5,000 to the spca. the dog has been adopted by another family. camden county man involved in a youth sports league now faces child porn charges. joseph mccann jr. is accused of possession and distribution of child pornography. police say they found numerous images on his computer. mccann surrendered to police this afternoon. he was involved in the pine hill youth athletic association for 13 years. a major development might be built on the camden waterfront. a hotel there could soon get the green light. if the deal goes through a new hotel, shops and places to live would be built. nbc 10's drew smith explains the plan and why people in camden are excited. >> reporter: a developer wants to make a splash along the delaware river in camden that could include more than 1,000 residential units and a hotel. >> we just saw the city so we wanted to check it out. >> reporter: visitors are already drawn to the riverfront. today, an all day concert brought heavy foot traffic. >> you see over there, you look at philly and i'm like wow, that's something they're doing good. then you look over here it's kind of eh. they should definitely build it up over here. >> reporter: people told us camden's reputation is starting to change and they think more development is a good idea. >> i'm surprised there's no hotels because a lot of people come down here. >> reporter: this is where this potential project could go on this wide open space right on the waterfront. it's not far from the aquarium. leaders in camden tell us this could be a game changer. >> 20 years ago there was nothing but broken down piers. >> reporter: today the area is coming alive. jeff nash is a camden county freeholder but he is also taking a leap of faith in this city by leaving a philadelphia law firm to start his own firm here. >> we are hoping that eventually there will be tens of thousands of people living and working in this area. >> reporter: city leaders say this project could sweep in a whole new phase of revitalization but the people paying for the project and the land owners still need to come to an agreement. drew smith, nbc 10 news. it is day ten without a pennsylvania budget and the governor says he is willing to explore ideas if it's not done in smoke and mirrors. governor tom wolf says he will listen to ways to eliminate the deficit and increase money for education without raising sales or income taxes. next on "nbc 10 news at 6:00" a local teacher locked up. tonight, what police say she was doing inside a parked car that got her arrested. critics in his homeland accuse the pope of not doing enough during a period called the dirty war. next, how a dna test changed a woman's life 36 years later and her feelings about pope francis. how long is this warm weather going to last and will storms hold off for your weekend? my first alert forecast is next. a teacher in exton caught in an alleged sex act with a student. police have arrested katie cross, a language arts teacher at the collegium charter high school. police say investigators caught her with a 17-year-old boy in the front seat of a car. the school has suspended cross. y now to new information over the fight over st. laurientius catholic church. the historical commission has designated this church an historic site. the unused church which merged with another nearby parish faced demolition because of structural problems. the parish owns the church but has said it can't afford to make the repairs. minutes ago, the archdiocese of philadelphia released this statement. we firmly maintain the position it is not feasible to properly repair neither the parish more the archdiocese has the funds to fix the building. the archdiocese says the building remains a public safety problem. all this week we have brought you stories from pope francis' native argentina as we get ready for his visit to philadelphia in september. tonight, a story that stayed with me and my crew for the long trip home and beyond. it's about a dark time during francis' rise in the church through the eyes of a mother and grandmother we will not forget meeting on our very last day in argentina. two photos on an office desk speak volumes of the tragedy and triumph that form the arc of estella's 84 years. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> she told us her pregnant daughter was kidnapped off the street at age 22. the college student activist detained for months in one of many secret government detention centers like this one during argentina's brutal dirty war in the late 1970s. her one-dimensional black and white photo among many now symbolic of the repressive military dictatorship that saw thousands disappear. she was held until she gave birth to a boy, then executed as was the baby's father. the newborn among as many:aw as 500 babies believed snatched and adopted out to military families or those seen as sympathetic on the regime. this is the(qx÷ñ country in latin america, she said where stealing children was done for political reasons. for years, she wondered what happened to her grandson and joined other activists in protest demanding answers from the government about their loved ones' whereabouts. she cofounded a grandmothers group with their signature white kerchiefs dedicated to finding lost children of the disappeared but others escaped kidnapping or certain death by going into hiding. some stayed in this seminary thanks to the quiet actions of a local leader named jorge, the man who later would become pope francis. >> it was a difficult time for the country. >> reporter: and for church leaders. freelance "new york times" journalist jonathan gilbert investigated politically charged claims jorge was complicit in other cases of government kidnappings. >> there is nothing to absolutely pin down that he was involved in any sort of human rights abuses. >> reporter: as for estella for more than 30 years she knew nothing of the whereabouts of her grandson until last august when a 36-year-old musician learned of his questionable adoption and submitted to genetic testing. the news that would restore her strength, the young musician's dna was a match to the very woman whose organization had helped reunite more than 100 other families with lost babies. she told us initially she believed pope francis didn't do enough to help their cause but says she has since learned from those who are in a position to know of his quiet work at the time. it's all about walking that fine line to help in the plight of the disappeared without becoming one of them himself. very difficult times in that country during that period. she has since reconciled with pope francis and met with him at the vatican jrecently. >> what a haunting time. certainly a happy ending there in terms of being reunited with her grandson. >> she says she feels she's gotten part of her daughter back as well. can you imagine? >> what a story. thank you, jim. glenn? big change from 24 hours ago. we saw a line of nasty thunderstorms headed this way and there warnings and there was damage and now two confirmed tornadoes in our area. the strongest one in berks county. picture-perfect day, though, around here. a lot of picture-perfect weather over the weekend with one exception. some of the storms are going to be returning next week, not necessarily as bad as last night. beautiful end to the day here in philadelphia. visibility is excellent, humidity is low. 84 degrees. feels like 84. we don't have the high humidity. 73 in mt. pocono but we see 80 or above in just about the rest of the area. in southern new jersey southern delaware, low 80s as well. even at the beaches, we are seeing that because of the wind direction. it's all about wind direction at the shore. northwest wind so it's 82 in avalon, 80 in beach haven. very similar to the inland areas. that's going to change over the weekend. we will be getting sea breezes both saturday and sunday. not real strong winds but just enough. we have a lot of sunshine out here now, of course. clouds and even some showers back to the west. some in west virginia and ohio. just about all of this is going to track down to the south but southern delaware could get just on the edge of that. watch the temperatures as we go through the night. the wind direction continues to be out of the dry northwest so the humidity stays low. we could still get clouds even with low humidity near the ground but it gets harder to actually get some rain. this particular model is just bringing clouds in and not some showers but there is a chance down there and it's close to 90 degrees up in the philadelphia area but with lower humidity. it won't be that hot at the shore because of the sea breezes. the clouds in southern beach areas like delaware the ocean temperature's 73 and everybody has a great day on sunday. both days are spectacular in the poconos, near 80 degrees with very low humidity and not much wind. for the rest of the night, it's mostly clear and comfortable. some of the suburbs down to 59 degrees. you don't see that very much in july. sunny and warm with the clouds in southern delaware especially maybe cape may county getting some, into the upper 80s. 91 pretty hot on sunday but the humidity's not bad. no rain anywhere in the area. monday it's hot but again, not that humid. the humidity starts coming back with a bang on tuesday as showers and thunderstorms return. i'm amy fadool life. to the nfl now. an arbitrator reduced the suspension of cowboys defensive end greg hardy from ten games to just four, meaning he will miss only the first meeting with the eagles in week two. hardy was suspended due to multiple domestic violence incidents with a former girlfriend. malcolm jenkins foundation handing out food and other essentials to folks in need in north philadelphia today. we asked the eagles safety about the adjustment byron maxwell is making after signing a deal with the birds this offseason. >> it's different here. the way we work the schedule all that stuff. so i think it took him a couple weeks to get used to that. but you know we work probably a little harder than most teams do in the offseason, otas. but i think he understands that we want to win and that's the goal. he knows what it takes to be great. the trade to bring nick stauskas, landry and thompson to the sixers has not been announced yet but thompson was back at his alma mater, and is looking
