Want to fix Arizona schools? Then let's talk - really talk - about student poverty

Due to COVID-19, very few students attend San Carlos schools. Many of the students come in for food and internet since the poverty level is so high in San Carlos, Ariz.
I’m tired of conversations that don’t move the needle on educating students in poverty. Tired of stating that, pre-pandemic, one in five Arizona children live with overwhelming needs.
I’m equally exhausted from unproductive conversations with legislators and state business leaders about the impacts of poverty on children’s education. Worn out from using analogies such as more “bricks in the backpacks” of impoverished children entering the doors of Arizona’s public schools, tired before they arrive from the heavy load they carry – if they arrive at all.
