Watson is the highest-drafted Wake County high school baseball player since Josh Hamilton was drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1999. Holly Springs pitcher Carlos Rodon was drafted third in the 2014 draft, but he was drafted out of college. Green Hope High School's Jordyn Adams was drafted 17th out of high school in the 2018 draft.
