not a couple of individuals waking up and committing the crime. >> police say up to four men using flashlights focused on the back of the building that sits on a rail yard. edgar medina, the only suspect in custody, was allegedly caught with the 1.8 million in cash in the trunk of this car. the break in went down around 9:30 august 16th. police say surveillance video shows the group casing the building and at one point appears to tamper with the security system, an elaborate network of cameras. these are the tools left behind, jacks used to open a steel door. when inside they broke through doors and concrete, reached the vault and were in the process of moving the cash when you see here an officer on routine patrol spotted medina who took off in the car but was eventually caught. >> not cool at all. >> reporter: she lives next door to this home in brentwood where medina lives, a man with ten prior arrests out on payroll. we did reach out to loomis but did not here back. police are offering a $25,000 reward for information in this case. for now live in hicksville, kemberly richardson, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. from long island to chinatown, lower manhattan, breaking news. a platform fire at broadway and canal street is causing big subway delays. shannon sohn is over the scene in newscopter 7. >> reporter: you can see that we still have this fire department activity. this is broadway. we will bring the shot out. you can see the intersection with canal street. the platform fire happened at the canal street station a little while ago. some of that fire department activity has cleared out which is a little bit of good news. what you need to know if you travel on the n, q or r lines, expect delays between this canal street station and dekalb avenue in brooklyn. no word when the delays are expected to clear up. reporting live over chinatown, shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> shannon, thank you. new information about the mind-set of the killer in the murder on live television in virginia. police say they found a gun, several magazines of bullets and disguises in the car of gunman vester flanagan. the survivor of the shooting, vicky gardner had more surgery today for her gunshot wounds. she is sitting up and talking. tim fleischer has much more. >> reporter: i will have more on vicky gardner's condition in a moment. tonight we are learning more about the suspected shooter, the former reporter and what was in his possession. when disgruntled reporter vester flanagan crashed his car after a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police found the deadly inventory of items. court documents reveal a glock bis pistol, magazines, 9- millimeter ammunition and three license plates. >> it's conceivable that if someone saw their first hit on the air, which was probably about 5:10, they could get from wherever they were to smith mountain late. >> reporter: he came upon photographer adam ward and alison parker during a live interview. he fired nine shots killing alison and adam and wounded vicky gardner. >> she told me she was shot in the back and lucky to be alive. >> reporter: tim gardner says his wife is in good condition. >> reporter: from this image of flanagan, police are investigating a troubled former employee who they say was spiraling out of control. flanagan claims he suffered from racial discrimination and bullying at work. >> i would defend the actions of every person in that newsroom when he was here. i saw the way he behaved. >> reporter: the station's general manager went into greater detail describing why flanagan was fired for anger issues and the inability to work with others. >> at that point management made the determination that it was the appropriate time to separate him from the company. >> reporter: he did not go quietly. police were called to escort him from the station. >> we are still at a loss to figure out what happened to him in those 2 1/2 years. >> reporter: now they grieve for two colleagues and friends taken from them. they turn to each other for support and a special symbol. >> we are wearing ribbons today and will continue to wear those as long as we can. they represent adam and alison. >> it will take time for us to heal and for all of us in the roanoke area. >> this late word on vicky gardner. she is out of a medically induced coma and she is up and talking. they say vicky knows she was fortunate. bill? >> tim, thank you. president obama is in new orleans where he is paying contribute to the city's resiliency 10 years after hurricane katrina. the president spoke at a newly opened community center in the lower ninth ward. 10 years ago this weekend nearly 2,000 people died and one million displaced because of the storm. >> you are becoming a model for the nation when it comes to disaster response and resilience. we learned lessons from katrina. u.s. army corps. of engineers developed stricter standards. >> earlier residents lining the streets to welcome the president and his motorcade. and he stopped for lunch in one of the oldest black neighborhoods in america. a fire this afternoon at a luxury apartment building in the east village. an eyewitness news viewer tweeted this video from flames shooting from a penthouse on east 13th street. the fire was in the machinery room. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. no word on the cause of the fire tonight. the unit had just sold, just sold for $4.4 million. a call for help for some folks that live in east harlem. they are worried about drugs and violence and homelessness in their community and more than slightly puzzled by mayor de blasio's sudden crackdown on costume characters and naked painted women in time's square. don't drugs and vines trump panhandlers dressedly elmo. darla miles has the story for us. >> reporter: additional resources were devoted to cleaning up east harlem but the people who live here say it doesn't look like it. >> beautification, 96 down, downtown, you see beautification. where is that beautification here? you don't see it. >> reporter: what you see at east 125th and likes inning ton avenue intertwined -- lexington avenue intertwined with the commuters is hopelessness. >> we have folks nodding off, reminiscent of the days in 1970s when heroin was a problem. marijuana. >> methadone clinics, mental health clinics and programs here drawing them to this community in truckloads. it's not fair. >> reporter: it seems unfair for some elected officials and community leaders in east harlem now that the mayor has created a task force to address quality of life issues in time's square. >> if we get naked and run up and down, we will get more attention. >> we want a fraction of the attention in time's square placed here. >> reporter: robert rodriguez wants the creation of an east harlem task force to address their own quality of life issues like enforcing new k 2 laws, increased community policing, removing subway grates, regulate the number of methadone clinics in one area and adding mental health services. mayor de blasio says this is being done while admitting there are some problems that persist. >> a true statement there are a number of facilities there. that is something that happened over a year. some are state facilities, some are city. that puts particular challenges on the area. our answer to that is to beef up the resources being applied to the community. that is having an effect. >> reporter: for maria cruz that effect is minimal. >> no one is doing anything here. we have been ignored here, okay? >> reporter: for the people who rallied here this afternoon, they don't want to just throw 100 officers at the problem but it needs a more comprehensive approach. darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> darla, thank you. the mta says today was a milestone in its effort to speed things up for long island commuters. the first rails of the long island railroad's double track project were laid in ronkonkoma. when it's completed in four years, a second track will run the entire 18-mile stretch from ronkonkoma to farmingdale. the mta announcing another milestone. service will begin on the 7 train extension on sunday, september 13th. officials say the hudson yard station on manhattan's west side near the javits convention around 1:00 p.m. stocks on wall street do i up 369 points. nasdaq up 15. as we continue, a local doctor facing charges of sex abuse. >> also, new revolations -- revelations in a fiery crash. my name is amanda and i smoked while i was raja jagtiani in july. she said the doctor bit her face and touched her breast while working together. during the investigation, three other women came forward with similar accusations. >> i'm just shocked. i would have never expected that because he is really a good doctor. he has a lot of patients that come to see him. >> the doctor was arrested tuesday. he is facing several charges. we are learning more about what happened before a fiery crash on long island that killed a man and his two young children. prosecutors indating three more people on charges in connection with the tragedy on the southern state parkway. the other suspects accused of helping oneil sharpe junior get away from the scene. prosecutors say another driver was driving recklessly before the crash and helped oneil get rid of bottles of booze in his car. >> the sole effort is to get out of there, to conceal oneil sharpe's intoxication. >> mr. sharpe was not intoxicated. mr. sharpe wasn't driving recklessly and he didn't leave the scene of the accident with any ill intentions. >> the driver of the other vehicle, his 8-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter all of them died in the crash. a large and potentially dangerous turtle was found in a popular swimming area on long island. a kayaker discovered the 25- pound alligator snapping turtle on sunday in smithtown. yeah. it was found in the river. look at that. the spca says the species is not native to long island h. the reap tile was apparently endangered and is capable of biting off fingers and toes. it is being taken to an ecology center. >> other ragged tropical storm, thunderstorms all over the place, not wrapping around the center but it's a big rainstorm. 4 to 8 inches in pier to rico. good news they need the rain. that is a lot at once. the storm track initially was north of puerto rico. now likely to go over the island. if erica survives into the bahamas in a favorable area where it could intensify hugging the coast of florida, the eastern part of the gulf is still in play but it's more likely that the east coast of florida would be involved in the track. it may hang around meaning a lot of rain. clear for us tonight. the camera operator on a segue. he doesn't see the metal railing, down goes the scooter into the fastest two legs on the face of the earth. after everybody held their breath, bolt was fine and we hope
