are hearing of the market situations and certainly they're coming down here, we're going to find out the latest watching us work and trying to take pictures as well. it's an unsettled time to a certain degree. again, we see a rebound up to this point. we'll continue to watch the market as the day progresses. reporting live, tim fleischer channel 7 eyewitness news. many folks are worried about the wild ride on wall street as today's initial plunge a sign of something bigger. >> joining us now abc's chief correspondent, rebecca jarvis. average investor? >> i think for the average investor what's so interesting is if you look at what's happened today, the stock market started down 1,000 points. now it's down 200 points. go anywhere. we don't really know exactly where the market is going, but ultimately for the average person what the important thing to do is to have a strategy in place so you don't have to worry about things like this. the reality is you have to think about it in the long run. those who sold in the worst of the great recession in 2009 lost half of their money. those who stayed the course who waited it out, who might have returned away from reports like this at times where it was the toughest to do they gained their money back within three years. five years later those same accounts are up 61%. the bottom line guys, waiting it out historically speaking is the best plan of action. >> sure. even jumping in. some people keep cash on the sidelines for days like today. >> exactly. clearly they did that today points. some people felt it was time to jump in. that's why the market is down much less. >> any indication it's going to continue like this for the rest of the week? >> volatility is going toe to remain high. they track fear in the officer involved shooting that happened in ocean county. the shooting happened last night near cherry wood circle if brick township. new jersey reporter anthony johnson is there. >> michelle, you can still see they have the police tape all around the scene. police officers still standing over there in the area where the shooting occurred. if we look a little bit closer, you can see the fence is broken. that's exactly where the shots were fired. you can also see the siding on a house over there. that's where some of the bullets struck the house. we understand that this happened during a party right here in this neighborhood. investigators have been here collecting evidence from the shooting of a man that tells police or rather from a man that he was carrying what sources tell eyewitness news at this point was fake gun. now police were called to the scene after getting a 9-1-1 call from a man who said he was disturbance. he quickly hung up the phone. we understand that fake weapon real. the man carrying that fake gun was apparently told by authorities to drop the imitation gun. he refused. police officers from brick township fired several rounds, he died from that shooting. he fell to the ground face first with his hands up. we heard from one witness at the scene. the shooting at 47 cherrywood circle happening around 11:00 last night, and police have been on the scene ever since then. the name of the victim has not been released. we do understand that family members are quite a distance away, so they're still working to contact those family members at this point in time. and this case is being investigated by the ocean county prosecutor's office. that's the latest live from brick township new jersey, anthony johnson channel 7 eyewitness news. thank you anthony. teenager who lives across from gracie mansion is facing charges. michael veritsky faces charges incoming assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon. the officer was getting out of an unmarked police cruiser last night when she was hit. she was not seriously hurt. he was also charged in two other incidents last week in which he shot the gun out of his window hitting his neighbor's window. a toddler in brooklyn is fighting for his life after he was rescued from an early morning fire. flames from an electrical problem erupted from the home in marine park just after 1 a.m. firefighters found the boy unconscious in a bedroom. >> gene pierre lost his home, but his family is still intact. an early morning fire destroyed everything inside his brooklyn home, and almost killed his 2- >> doing good. medically induced coma so he can heal. this morning. gene's wife and two other children were able to make it out but they lost track of little chase in the blinding smoke. neighbors rushed back in but the smoke was overwhelming. the fdny lieutenant was one of the first on the scene. >> very chaotic scene, people yelling that the baby was still inside. >> we made our way to the top of the stairs and when he zero visibility, high heat. >> lucas found the toddler in a middle bedroom lying lifeless pile of clothes. >> i have a baby coming down >> that was malucas yelling on this radio 1045, i have a baby he says, i'm coming down. >> every life is precious but, you know, for a child it's -- you go above and beyond. >> emts successfully resuscitated little chase, but it all began with a lieutenant who would not give up until he found his missing little boy. you know. it is what it is. you have to count your blessings. >> this is not the first time lieutenant malucas saved a life. he did the same thing a few years ago in queens when he burning home. in brooklyn, dray clark channel 7 eyewitness news. a man and woman in queens have died after they got trapped in a home in far rockaway. the fire on cornaga avenue was under investigation because it spread with unusual intensity. by the times firefighters arrived flames were coming out of six ground floor windows. collier's mansion. the flames were fueled by so much clutter inside the home. the bodies of the man and woman were burned beyond recognition. the medical examiner must rely on medical records to help identify them. three americans being honored for their extraordinary bravery taking down a heavily armed gunman after he opened fire on a packed train heading to france. the humble heroes receiving pistol. the attacker slashed stone with a box cutter. still the 23-year-old managed to help save mugalion. >> i stuck two of my fingers in the hole, found what i thought to be the artery, pushed down and the bleeding stopped. >> the using the train conductor's necktie. the attacker in custody identified as moroccan born ayoub el-khazzani. his attorney says the 25-year- old denies any ties to terror groups and claims his plan was only to rob passengers. >> as police continue questioning him we've learned mugalion whose lung was punctured in the struggle will also be award the medal when he's released from the hospital. >> we've learned a man beaten in a brooklyn bodega has died. police now calling it a homicide and releasing pictures of a half a dozen people wanted for the crime. an would not be surprised if more than 20 people were counted as killed. the hawker hunter jet crashed on a highway after it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver during an aerial display saturday i felt him shoot me in my left leg. >> we really do value every moment that we have together now. >> whitney was on the phone with 9-1-1 when the shooting happened. after mike was hit, the robbers ran. one suspect was caught. three are still on the loose. mike, though, is recovering at home from the leg. >> new calls for safer measures for fans at baseball stadiums after two more people were injured by foul balls over the weekend. a woman who was watching the chicago cubs play yesterday was hospitalized after being hit by a line drive foul ball, and on friday another fan was seriously hurt, hit in the head by a foul ball that was in detroit. >> it seems like something happens once a game where a ball just misses a fan or, you know, inevitably it's always like small kids or women. something needs to be addressed immediately. >> an oakland a's's fan is suing major league baseball. the mlb commissioner says fans who buy those seats don't want netting in front of them. a big congratulations to comedian tracy morgan who tied the knot with his long-time fiancee megan wollover. in june of last year morgan was in a serious car accident that killed his friend and left morgan critically injured and needing long-term rehab. his wife told people magazine after almost losing tracy last year, i am so grateful to finally be married to the love of my good to hear. congratulations to them. a frightening crash race. the driver is fighting for his life in a hospital right now after debris from the crash hit him in the head. >> and could a brutal winter be on the for today. 94 your record back in 1972. the sunsetting at 7:42 p.m. you're 84 in morristown, 79 at newburgh. about 83 at islip. dew points measuring the amount of moisture in the atmosphere kind of straddling between sticky and uncomfortable, closer to just 60 degrees. it's not that bad out there. it's not oppressive but i do think as we head into the overnight hours the dew point will pick up, and it will be more uncomfortable by the overnight hours. radar, satellite showing just some clouds around: there have been a few showers over the very east tip of long island. those are weakening. those will continue to move off to the east and the northeast, but for the time being you're getting a little bit of rain over twin forks right now. there's a cold front approaching western pennsylvania, western new york. this will move through tonight into tomorrow morning, and with that there could be a shower or thunderstorm around north and west of the city during the evening hours. if they make it into the city t probably waits until after midnight and there's still a thunder threat around tomorrow during the day, the high getting up to 85. behind that front it's a much drier beautiful air mass coming in for wednesday and right in through the weekend. accuweather forecast for the afternoon partly to mostly sunny, warm, rather humid, not too bad out there. the high getting up to around 86. mostly cloudy, muggy tonight, a couple of showers and a thunderstorm possible north and west of the city during the evening. potentially making it into the city after midnight. we're down to about 72. clouds giving way to some sun. could be a shower or thunderstorm especially in the morning tomorrow. 85 later tomorrow some less humid air starts working its way in from the west, and then that leads into wednesday, going to be a beauty out there. less humid, 84, a lot of sunshine. same deal for thursday and friday. there could be a thundershower by late sunday. we could be while trying to help a stranded driver. the trooper dying from his wounds. steven vincent was shot in the head last night after approaching a man whose pickup truck was stuck in a ditch. video shows 54-year-old kevin daigle coming out of the truck with a sawed off shotgun and shooting vincent. other motorists wrestled daigle to the ground. he's now being charged with first degree murder. indy car driver justin wilson is in a coma following a nasty crash. another driver lost control at a speed around 200 miles per hour, hit a wall last night at the pocono raceway in pennsylvania. debris bounced off the track and hit wilson in the head. indy car drivers are not protected by a windshield. wilson is in critical condition. this next story is getting a lot of attention. apple's iphone 6 plus is pretty as a picture, but when it comes to taking pictures it's got some problems. apple says phones sold from last september to january of this year have a defective eyesight camera that takes blurry stories this afternoon, a man in new jersey dead after he was shot by police officers in brick township. according to prosecutors, officers last night were confronted by a man approaching them with what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun. after the man refused to drop the weapon the officer opened fire hitting him several times and killing him. the gun turned out to be fake. an investigation now underway. a fire lieutenant in brooklyn rescued a young boy from a burning home. the lieutenant led responders to the fire in marine park. they found 2-year-old chase upstairs. the emts resuscitated the little boy. >> and breaking news, stocks trimming some of their early losses but it's still a dismal day on wall street where the dow jones fell at one point 1,000 points in the opening minutes. hello i'm david novarro. keeping track of that. >> i'm michelle charlesworth in for shirleen allicot. let's take another live look at the stock market board now. the dow is down 166, a huge rebound since earlier this morning. what a roller coaster ride. >> with such drastic ups and downs on wall street people who have put their savings into stocks have worried about what's going to happen with their investments. >> the question is should they be overly concerned. joining us with insight and perspective is erin alstein. so you're -- what cautionary point? >> i would say find a dramamine >> that's good advice. >> the market does what the market does. the market's always volatile. some days it's really volatile. this morning was crazy. it dropped about a thousand points in 5 minutes. that will get your attention. we're down about 140. that's not very big. i don't know what will happen in the next few hours. we may fall another thousand points. average people try to tune this out. try to tune it out. let people who do this for a that's their job. >> we've heard a lot of reasons that might be behind it, the the prices of oil dropping. the question i have is at what point would our government step in and do anything? would it have to go below 15,000? than this. in 2008 you're talking about catastrophes like that, the market fell about 30%. the market's fallen 10% in the last few weeks. it's a long way from being like where bank are having problems, businesses having problems, people losing their jobs. >> this is not our first rodeo. every four year we see a correction or when do we see the market sort correct itself? >> the last time we had the market get interesting like this was october 2014. do you remember that? most people forget. 2011 in the summer things went crazy, and then they calmed down. this happens a lot. we haven't had one of these for a while so it feels big. this is what markets do. >> we're going to have you on the newscast much more story on abc7ny.com. in brooklyn, police looking for suspects after a man dies following a beating at a bodega. have a good look at these pictures. the nypd says the men beat 38- year-old michael brown in the crown heights section saturday. brown headed home afterwards and called paramedics later in the day. he was taken to the hospital and that's where he died. if you have any information them. a long island father is behind bars accused of driving drunk with his three young children in the car. year-old carlos sanchez last night in plain view because his headlights were off. he was allegedly driving without a license and had been drinking. police say one of his children was also not in a safety seat. sanchez faces charges including aggravated driving while intoxicated. a chaotic scene at a music festival on long island hurt two concert goers. it happened yesterday as rapper fetty wap performed at the jones beach theater. two young women got trapped under a fence after the rapper jumped off the stage and into the audience and caused the crowd to rush the stage. the two concert goers were not seriously hurt. two dozen people are recovering, many of them firefighters after a fire ripped through a high-rise building in harlem. eyewitnesses say the hallways in the 35-story building filled with smoke as firefighters rushed to get everybody out. this happened at broadway and 133rd street. the victims are expected to recover from their injuries. now to the race for the president, and there is more they'd vice president joe biden is very serious about about a run for the white house: on saturday he held what is described as a secret meeting with the influential democrat elizabeth warren as he ponders a challenge to hillary clinton. >> good afternoon to you, we know that biden is meeting with president obama for a previously scheduled lunch today, but all the buzz surrounding biden is still about what he did over the weekend. some calling it the latest evidence he is serious about another run for the white house. >> will he or won't he, vice president joe biden is still keeping everyone guessing, but the biggest sign yet he might actually run for president coming over the weekend. biden left his vacation on saturday to return to washington for a private meeting with liberal icon senator elizabeth warren. warren is one of the most powerful and outspoken democrats who has yet to endorse anyone telling abc7 on friday she believes the race is still wide open. >> i want to see all the presidential candidates lay out where they stand on key issues. >> so far she's been cool to front runner hillary clinton seen in this photo on vacation in the hamptons. clinton's e-mail scandal dogging her campaign with a recent poll showing 37% saying clinton is honest and trustworthy while 58% say they trust biden. biden's backers are promoting him as more authentic than >> unbelievable. >> but on the other side gop front runner donald trump telling abc's george stephanopoulos on sunday biden joining the race makes no difference. >> would he be a tougher opponent than hillary? >> i don't think sos. >> biden is expected to make a final decision sometime in september with the first democratic primary debate set to take place in october. i'm elizabeth hur for channel 7 eyewitness news. in new jersey one young lady is going to have a heck of a story to tell about her welcome to the world. this is a picture of little bella rose abbud. she was born in sea bright in her parents car on the side of the road. mom and dad got stuck in traffic coming back from the jersey shore. bella did not want to wait. dad says things got a little nerve wracking once mom's water broke. >> she's like no, she's coming now, and that's when she puts the seat in recline, she takes her pants off, and i see the baby's head and i'm like, oh, my god, no. >> oh, many i god. i love his reaction. >> yes. >> the abbud's caught a huge break. there was an emt in the car in front of them, and she helped with the delivery. mom and baby are doing fine. the couple also has a 17-month- old son. he's said to be in love with his new baby sister. how lucky were they to have somebody who knew exactly what to do in that situation because dad seemed a little nervous. >> you think? you picked up on that? very subtle cues from him. >> we want to turn now to meteorologist jeff smith in for bill evans. he has the afternoon accuweather forecast. >> we got a lot of sunshine out there right now causing temperatures to rise well into the 80s. we're watching the high resolution futurecast as we head into the afternoon because a front will be approaching from the west, and there could be a couple of thunderstorms firing up ahead of that front moving into the poconos and catskills by 4:00 and perhaps moving into area north and west of new york city during the evening hours, and then after midnight tonight if these do survive their trip to the coast, they could affect places like the city and long island and connecticut. highs getting up to around 86 degrees in central park. how about 88 at morristown and 88 at poughkeepsie. 85 at sussex, lower 80s on the island at islip and montauk. mid-80s downs shore at belmar and toms river. down at the beaches, water temperatures in the lower and middle 70s. we also are going to be talking about the tropics coming up during the half hour. there's a tropical storm that has weakened into a depression heading towards puerto rico. there's another system threatening to develop into a named storm in the middle of the atlantic ocean. there's a lot to talk about in the accuweather forecast even though around looking pretty good for the next seven days. coming up, the push to make a new york city landmark a national monument. >> also threats of violence at the pokemon world championships in boston. the plot police stopped. >> and in the president obama has been asked to declare the plaza near the storm wall inn in greenwich village a national monument. scott stringer wrote the president pushing for christopher park to get the distinction. the stone wall is a private business and not eligible for national monument status. that's why they want that plaza. it's where riots took place in 1969 and is considered by many as the birthplace of the modern lgbt movement. two men will be arraigned on weapons charges in boston today after police say they made violent online threats pokemon world championships. the two men from iowa were the event. their car. what they found is the men had a 12 gauge shotgun, ar-15 rifle, several hundred rounds of ammunition and a hunting knife. no word yet on a motive. now to an abc news exclusive. new video reveals how those two convicted killers broke out of the upstate new york prison. investigators wearing a go pro retraced their steps through the escape tunnel. all this is on camera. eyewitness news anchor ken rosato has the story. >> abc news has exclusive new video showing the escape route david sweat and richard matt used to bust out of prison on june 6th. >> entering the under side of the laundry facility. >> the video showing two state investigators using a go pro camera to reveal the convict's path to freedom, the inmates first cutting holes in the backs of their cells, crawling through under the cat walks behind. 3 minutes later shimmying to the prison's underground prison system. >> approaching the first significantly tight squeeze. >> 9 minutes in squeezing through this hole taking them into another building. minutes later, they're yard. then at 17 minutes in squeezing through that now infamous steam pipe. sweat telling police it took him four weeks to holes. matt shedding 50 pounds so he could fit through. that pipe taking them underneath the prison wall. the new video revealing it likely took just 20 minutes from their cells to freedom through that manhole. ken rosato channel 7 eyewitness news. >> what a erratically on an ohio highway putting other people on the road in serious danger. abc's alex perez has the story. >> he's about to kill somebody. >> it's the jaw dropping video that this morning is turning heads online. watch as the driver of this white car swerves from one lane to the other eventually ending up in the median. >> there she goes. the driver sandra harris then gets back on the road. >> that voice, the person recording the video, 26-year- old sam haynes. >> i was about to watch somebody die. >> haynes whose own sister was paralyzed by an impaired driver six years ago desperately trying to stop harris who he suspected was driving under the influence. >> stop the car! stop the car >> haynes following along honking and yelling until he was able to get her to pull over. >> are you okay? >> i'm fine. oh, my goodness. i am so sorry. >> once he did, he called police. deputies say harris admitted to using heroin and meth before driving. she was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence. the video going viral already viewed more than 1 million times on facebook, many calling haynes a hero. >> i don't feel like i'm a hero in any way. i was doing what i would hope somebody else would do. >> harris due to be arraigned in court in the next couple of days. haynes now grateful tragedy averted. alex perez abc news chicago. >> that video is so babies. there's optimism both will survive. the twins who weigh less than 5 ounces were born on friday. every several hours the cubs were walked out giving each a chance to bond with their mother mei xiang. pandas the babies are 1/900th the size of the momma, the smallest mammal to momma, the baby to momma ratio. >> they really catch up later. >> they really do. >> lots of bamboo. >> yes. >> now check out that view by the empire state building. temperatures are sitting in the lower and middle 80s as we look at that view. mostly sunny skies, that wind coming in from the west around 5 miles per hour. island. because of that west wind places like islip aren't really cooler. it's a land breeze for them too. 82 at belmar, 84 down the shore at toms river. upper 70s well north and west at monticello. we've had some clouds east of the city. those are moving off to the east. and we even had a couple of showers by shelter island, up by the twin forks. those are weakening and moving off to the east as well. this front here will slice on through the area overnight tonight. as it does so, there will be a couple of thunderstorms and showers firing up ahead of it. minute. first a visit tropics where danny has weakened down to a depression as it's crossing into the leeward islands. this is going to bring a lot of beneficial rain to much of the northern caribbean, which has been in a drought including puerto rico. this one moves south of puerto rico with 30 miles per hour sustained winds. we drone to worry about wind rain. another system, this one tagged by the national hurricane center as having a 90% chance of developing into a named storm during the next couple of days. we'll be watching that carefully as it traverses the open waters of the atlantic. here's our futurecast during the day. not much to worry about during the afternoon. by around sunset or just after, there could be a couple of showers and thunderstorms approaching the delaware water gap, parts of the catskills, and a couple of these can move into areas north and west of the city during the evening hours. if they make it into the city it's probably after midnight. and then during the afternoon check out that drier air coming in from the west. that's going to mean a really nice air mass for later in the week. here's your accuweather seven- day forecast. 86 this afternoon, clouds, maybe a shower or storm in the morning leading to sunshine in the afternoon, 85 drier air comes in by late in the day from the city on west. less humid, brilliant sunshine on wednesday. 84, similar story for
