Prices of vegetables in Kolkata are rising ahead of Durga Puja, with some vegetables crossing the century-mark and others inching towards it. Trade insiders blame the demand-supply gap and unreasonable profiteering by retailers for the price increase. The heavy rain in south Bengal has flooded farmland, disrupting vegetable production and increasing dependency on other states for supplies. Retail prices are significantly higher than wholesale prices, causing concern among consumers. The gap between wholesale and retail prices should not exceed 20%, according to Kamal De, president of the Bengal Vendors' and Farmers' Association.
