Two West Bank state representatives have qualified to run for Senate, according to the secretary of state's website. Both Gary Carter Jr. and Rodney Lyons announced Wednesday that they will be seeking to fill the position vacated by Troy Carter, who was recently elected to the 2nd Congressional District seat. Carter Jr. posted a picture on his Instagram of him filing for the Senate seat Wednesday. Carter Jr. is currently the state representative of District 102, which encompasses all of Algiers in New Orleans. He was elected to the position in 2015 and is a graduate of Archbishop Shaw High School.According to the secretary of state's website, Lyons, who represents District 87, also qualified. Lyons' district encompasses Jefferson Parish. He was elected in 2015 and is a graduate of the University of New Orleans and Delgado Community College.Both Lyons and Carter Jr. are Democrats.
