Lets check this morning a truck driver is recovering after a terrifying accident. His tractor trailer careened off the side of the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel yesterday afternoon, and it is still in the water this morning. Police still have not released the drivers name. That could happen sometime today. Officers say traffic citations are pending in the accident. Lets take a closer look at the accident from a view only chopper 10 can show you. The driver plunged into the water around mile post 14 on the southbound side of the bridge. Police say he was trying to pass another, slowermoving tractor trailer, and lost control. Alert and conscious during the accident. He was in 49degree water for about an hour before emergency crews pulled him to safety. Chopper 10 was there as emergency crews put the driver on a stretcher. Then nightingale flew him to the hospital. Police say he has serious injuries to his head, arm, and chest, but he is expected to recover. The tractor trailer thats now sitting in the Chesapeake Bay is owned by nyk line the largest marine transporter in japan. Before the accident the tractortrailer was logged as empty, but when it crashed it was filled with soy beans. Newport News Police Say 25yearold Anthony Smith junior shot and killed his exgirlfriend, 25yearold Dashanika Sherrod in her bedroom monday. Her family says the two recently broke up. He shot her one time. And then he, you know. He shot her one time and then my mom ran in the room and thats when he shot her two more times and she screamed, and he looked at her. Investigators say a former teacher on the outer banks had an inappropriate relationship with a student. Prosecutors say 27yearold ryan garrott taught at manteo high school. The da says the victim is an 18year old female student. North carolina state code states if a teacher is at least 4 years older, and at the same school, its a felony. Prosecutors say garrott is currently out of the country. They will set a court date after hes served. Someone broke into more than a dozen vehicles at a senior community. Chesapeake police say it happened sometime sunday night at the chesapeake crossing apartment complex. Residents say they had to shell out hundreds of dollars for repairs. Today michigans governor will meet with the flint city mayor to discuss a serious water issue. Earlier this week, the governor issued a state of emergency for flint because of its toxic water. The water was contaminated with Dangerous Levels of lead, and its poisoning children in the community. The issue started back in 2014 when the city switched from detroits water supply to the flint river. It was all to save money. It has since switched supply. However an independent study shows lead levels in children have doubled. New this morning , a Police Standoff in georgia that lasted about 20hours, ended when a man shot a twoyearold boy and then turned the gun on himself. Both later died at the hospital. The standoff started yesterday afternoon when the twoyearolds mother says her livein boyfriend threatened to kill everyone inside their home. The mothers teenage son escaped and called 911. When officers got there, the man, mother, and twoyearold were holed up inside a bedroom. That standoff is less than 20 miles away from another we first told you about as breaking news on tuesday. In this incident, a man held a woman and 11 children hostage in a motel for about five hours. When swat entered the room, the man stabbed himself in the neck. At last check, he was in the hospital in critical condition. New this morning, alabamas chief supreme judges to uphold the states ban on samesex marriage. Justice roy moore sent a message reminding them the directive to refuse licenses to samesex couples is still in place. Roy moore alabama chief justice a court that enters an order, it must be obeyed until that order is removed the American Civil Liberties union of alabama said Justice Moores order was silly. It also said the order would not change alabama judges are issuing samesex marriage licenses. Happening today, noaa plans to release extreme weather events. New this morning, police gave us Additional Information about three late night 711 robberies in norfolk that happened in about an hour. We told you about these robberies as breaking news last night on wavy at 11 00. The first happened on redgate avenue and orapax police say it happened just before 9 00 pm, and the robber had was armed. He demanded money from one of the clerks, then ran off before police could catch him. The second happened about 25 minutes later at the 7eleven on colonial avenue and Princess Anne road. Thats in ghent, just a couple miles away from the first robbery. Police say the suspect was also armed and got away with money before police arrived. Police tell us the third Armed Robbery that happened on chesapeake boulevard just before 10 00 last night, was unsuccessful. A 10 on your side viewer sent us this picture from the scene. Police say the suspect barged into the store, but left before getting money. Police have not confirmed if the three crimes are connected. No one was hurt in any of them. Overnight, police gave us this description of one suspect. Witnesses say he was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and khaki pants. They say he was also wearing a backback. Call the crime line if you know anything about these robberies. Last nights attempted robbery at the chesapeake boulevard 711 is the same store where a yesterday morning. 10 on your side obtained this Surveillance Video of the incident. Youre seeing the moments leading up to the actual shooting. Another employee at the store told us the 23yearold clerk is out of the hospital. The suspect got away with about 50 dollars cash.
