Weve never seen this type of snow in this type of period in the history of this city. Residents, city crews, and the National Guard were working late into sunday night carving out sidewalks, digging out cars and clearing off roofs. Its cold out here. Im tired. My guys are tired. Just cant wait for it to be over. Emergency vehicles were squeezing through streets narrowed by piles of snow. The Tennessee Department of transportation trucks have been out here the plow trucks have been out here throughout the morning but the salt and brine is not effective with this amount of sleet. At the outset the initial break into the bank was a classic hacking attack but once the cyber criminals got into the banks network they switched to tactics more like something out of a spy novel. They used techniques we have never seen cyber criminals use before on this scale and very interesting new form of attack. What are they doing with the money . Where is it going . Well theyre transferring the money out of the victim banks and institutions into accounts of their own in some cases and cashing out from there on a variety of different methods and in some cases theyre taking the money out of the accounts. Howl banks are we talking about . Were talking about dozens of banks certainly. The number could go up to 100 different Financial Institutions around the world. Chris youre talking about up to a billion dollars which seems remarkable. Most of the money is going to accounts in china and the u. S. But youre not sure at this point where the hackers are actually based . We have ideas about where theyre based but attribution as we call it is always very difficult because its easy for hackers to make it appear like theyre in one place or theyre one person when theyre actually somewhere else. Tracking them down is always a challenge in any hacking attack. In this case we believe the hackers are based in russia china, and other european companies. So youre not naming the banks while the investigation is underway so what should any Bank Customer be doing . Sure i think its unfortunately something were all getting used to which is you should be looking at your monthly statement from your bank and your credit cards and making sure that not only the balance is correct on it but that the transactions that are listed are legitimate transactions.
