kill devil hills, north carolina. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. it is so intense here. we were down on the dunes you see behind me. we had to come back up because you can't see down there. our equipment is all wet. really, it is wind at 105 miles an hour with 100-foot waves offshore. they evacuated 125,000 people from the outer banks and they're hunkered down, waiting for the worst to be over. in income fk overnight, earl delivered a stinging blow. >> just the power. it's absolutely phenomenal. >> reporter: high winds, heavy rain and pounding surf battered the outer banks. the system appears to be losing steam as it roars up the east coast, but it's still packing a powerful punch. despite evacuation orders, some residents decided to stay put. >> for those that live on the island, we don't leave because we feel very safe. >> reporter: and they weren't the only ones. tease folks welcomed earl with a hurricane party. the rain pretty much stings your face as it comes down. as intense as this is, the high winds and rain will taper off as the day progresses here in north carolina. further north, it is only expected to get worse. >> if you are in an area that's subject to the storm surge or the effects of the wind or flooding, we do recommend that you relocate to a safer place. >> reporter: the northeast will get its brush with earl later tonight, including coastal communities in long island, and cape cod. on nantucket, these two women made a last-minute dash to the store to stock up, but they weren't alone. >> it's -- there's no chips anywhere. it's crazy in there. >> reporter: not everyone is waiting around for earl. this crowd board one of the last ferries off the island. >> we just decided to leave because it seems like it's going to get bad. >> reporter: ending their labor day weekend plans before they even began. all right. forecasters say this is pretty much what areas like cape cod can expect. also, keep in mind, earl has now spread out into a massive storm, which means most of the eastern seaboard will feel its effects. betty? >> looking at the radar, earl is huge. karen brown on north carolina's outer banks. stay safe out there. in the meantime, much of miami international airport was evacuated overnight and police arrested a passenger after screeners spotted something suspicious in a checked bag. four of the airport's six concourses were evacuated. the tsa says a police bomb squad was sent to a custom seconds near the international gates. to the gulf of mexico where the fear of another major oil spill has given way this morning to a huge sigh of relief. a fire erupted thursday on an oil rig off louisiana, but no one was killed and it appears no oil was spilled. sandra hughes has that story. >> reporter: flames could be seen from a distance on an oil production platform located 100 miles off the louisiana coast. the explosion and fire on the ver canmilion platform. one person was injured. mariner energy owns the platform. >> mariner has done an initial fly jo flyover of the facility. there was no spill around the facility. we will do another one later today. >> reporter: unlike the bp deepwater oil rig that killed 11 in april, this is an oil production platform operating in only 340 feet of water. and according to its owner, is a small oil producer. >> daily production is on the order of 1,400 barrels. >> reporter: still, this accident was enough to get the governor of louisiana's attention. >> the company suspects what is burning now is what was actually in storage. >> reporter: the white house says, at this point, thursday's accident, can't be compared to april's explosion, which triggered the worst oil spill in u.s. history. >> we obviously have response assets ready for deployment should we receive reports of pollution in the water. >> reporter: a government spokeswoman says the platform was undergoing paimaintenance w the explosion took place. 200 miles east of that rig at the site of the deepwater horizon disaster, bp is a step closer to permanently sealing its blownout well. they removed the temporary cap. next, they'll retrieve the blowout preventer that failed in april, triggering the explosion. no oil is leaking now, but if any does, bp says it is prepared to act quickly. on the "cbs moneywatch," stocks in asia continue to rally. ashley morrison is here in new york with the latest on all of that. good morning, ashley. >> good morning to you, betty. well, asian stocks inched up ending in positive territory for the third straight day. japan's nikkei added 0.5% while hang seng was mostly higher. wall street, modest gains following upbeat news on manufacturing and housing. thursday the dow rose 50 points while the nasdaq was up 23. the august unemployment numbers are out this morning and the news is not expected to be good. economists expect the private sector to add about 40,000 jobs, the fewest since january. the jobless rate is expected to increase to 9.6%. the first rise since january. those lucky enough to have a job with health insurance are paying a larger portion of the costs. a just-released report from the kizer foundation finds the average employee contribution climbed 14% to nearly $4,000. on this labor day weekend, more americans are expected to travel than last year. aaa expects a 10% increase in holiday travelers, about 34 million americans are expected to take trips of at least 50 miles from home. due to cheaper gas prices and airline deals. and if you're traveling in a ferrari, beware. ferrari is recalling the 458 atoli super cars because of the potential for fire. ferrari wants to replace an adhesive that can overheat. the car sells for $197,000. and, betty, if i paid that much money for a car, i certainly don't want it catching fire. >> what do you mean, you don't have a ferrari?
