lining an anvil. in a matter of minutes, the dow plunged over 1,000 points. but it recovered about two-thirds of its losses still finishing down 347 points. it appears european debt troubles and a possible erroneous trade triggered the free fall. tara mergener is in washington with details. >> reporter: this was a painful reminder of just how fragile p financial system really is. the problem possibly caused by a type graf cal error. the securities and exchange commission is investigating whether a simple typo could have triggered one of wall street's most it turbulent days ever. the dow plunged nearly 1,000 points within a matter of minutes thursday. at one point shares of as send sure fell from $42 to a single pen thi. but by the end of the day, the market had regained two-thirds of those losses. >> clearly you tonight go down 100 points at a time and bounce off a low and come back. so probably something related to a system problem pl. >> reporter: government sfishls are looking in to room ors that a trader accidently placed an oil to sell $16 billion worth of futures instead of $16 million. >> we've heard fat fingers, somebody hit a button, sold too much. we heard eight different rumors in there. who knows which of them will actually be true or not. >> reporter: whatever the cause, congress wants to make sure it doesn't happen again. a house panel will hold a hearing next week to review the incident. the market was already shaky because of fears over greece's debt crisis. angry protesters have taken to the streets of athenss for days. it all came to a head thursday when lawmakers approved controversial budget cuts. it's still unclear whether greece's instability or a computer glitch sparked yesterday's free fall on wall street, but one thing is certain, neither situation is good news for an industeconomy trying to recover. and nasdaq says there was clearly an error yesterday and will cancel all trades made within a 20 minute period. the new york stock exchange is considering similar action. michelle, back to you. >> very interesting story. all right. tara mergener in washington. thanks. now to the latest on efforts to stop the massive oil leak in the gufld of mexico. a 100 ton containment box is being lowered to try to cover the leak a mile beneath the sur far, buts as manuel gallegus reports, success is far from a sure bet. >> reporter: the spreading oil still gushing 200,000 gallons per day, has now reached the shore of louisiana's coastal islands. the shiny crude covers a wide area of the gulf. it's creeping toward florida and is already spread into the mississippi delta, despite a major cleanup operation involving nearly 10,000 workers. >> we are doing everything we can with every ounce of energy that we have. >> reporter: the government has now ordered a halt to all new offshore drilling permits off america's coasts. this 98-ton structure is british petroleum's best plan so far for stopping the spreading oil. engineers are using a crane on the surface and a robot submarine to guide the four-story dome as it sinks 5,000 feet to the sea floor. >> i think the trick will be to get over that hole. that's like looking for a needle in a haystack, although they know where the needle is. are. >> reporter: if the cap falls in to place, the oil flow is expected to be reduced by 85%. but environmentalists say the damage is already done. >> young crab, young shrimp, young oysters even. and then of course you got all the bird. >> reporter: toxicologist ricky ott says this could be a major hit to the ecosystem. >> we're losing because the oil is in the water column an right now it's killing things that we can't see. little baby eggs, larvi, juvenile fish. >> reporter: and we may not know the full environmental impact for at least five years. manuel gallegus, cbs news, venice, louisiana. >> the pakistani taliban said it had nothing to do with the attempted times square bombing. but it's reported that federal agents are investigating the possibility that suspect faisal shahzad got financial help from overseas militant groups. shahzad seen her buying the firecrackers allegedly used in the botched attack has been charged with acts of terrorism and other federal crimes. attorney general eric holder says shahzad continues to provide useful information. >> as we've seen in prior investigations, the giving of miranda warnings has not deterred people from talking to us and mr. shahzad is, in fact, continuing to cooperate with us. >> if convicted, shahzad faces life in prison. there is no clear cut win her this morning in the british elections. no party has been able to secure the 326 seats in parliament needed for an outright majority, so now the scramble to form a government begins. charlie d'agata is in london with the latest details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. what you see behind me is what they call a hung parliament. everybody wants to know who is going to be britain's next prime minister. at this point, we don't know. but i can tell you the votes still coming in, gordon brown's labour party lost the most number of seats pulls him in second place behind david cameron's conservative party with the most number of seats, but not a clear majority, not enough to form a government. which brings us to nick clegg and his liberal democratses. gordon brown may rye to reach out to nick clegg to try to get some support or try to form a coalition government which really hasn't worked here in the past. but last night nick clegg said he didn't want to be part of a coalition of the defeateded. in short, now the voting has ended and the deal making begins. that process could take hours, could take days, could even take weeks. michelle? >> charlie d'agata in london. thanks for the update. on the cbs "moneywatch," stocks in asia got battered this morning. emily smith is here in new york with that and more. >> reporter: well, stock markets in asia followed wall street's lead and took a dive. the nikkei shot northern 3%, the hang seng lost more than 1%. today wall street gets the april jobs report. it's expected to show the economy added about 200,000 jobs last month, though as many as half of those may be temporary census workerses. the unemployment rate is projected to hold steady at 9.7%. wall street will try today to salvage what's been an awful week. even after partially recovering from yesterday's market freefall, the dow dropped 347 points, a more than 3 point loss. the nasdaq was down 28. the blue chips have given back all of their gains for this year. the wrangling over financial reform continues on capitol hill. thursday lawmakers rejected a proposal requiring the nation's biggest banks to split up. both the bank going industry and the obama administration oppose that had idea. meanwhile the house has approved cash for caulkers. the plan would reward homeowners with rebates for making their homes more energy efficient by installing better insulation or energy-saving windows and doors. republicans oppose the bill. it now goes to the senate. and there may be some turbulence ahead for united and continental. the two airlines have decided to merge, but a transportation department official is asking the justice department to block the deal. he says a merger would not be between for the airline industry because it would create fewer competitors. the deal would create the world's largest care yir, but, yeah, that is not a done deal until the government gives its stamp of afternoon approval.
