Could get off a shot. The suspect is in surgery under the knife and under arrest. Kris van cleave is at the capitol. Reporter panicked congressional staffers and tourists fled the u. S. Capitol after reports of gunshots in the Visitors Center. Lynn sines and his family were about the take a tour. Basically all we heard was the Capitol Police saying, down, down, down, so we all dropped down. Reporter the shooting happened just after 2 30 p. M. At a security checkpoint staffed by Capitol Police. Chief matthew verderosa. The individual drew what appeared to be a weapon and pointed it at officers. An officer fired and struck the suspect, who was subsequently treated by medical personnel. Reporter sources tell cbs news the suspect is 66yearold larry dawson, man described as familiar with the capitol and known to Law Enforcement here. Man with the same name was taken into custody in october for causing a disturbance in the prophet of god. Dawson was charged with unlawful conduct on capitol grounds. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he failed to show up for a hearing. So far investigators have found no ties to any terror groups. There is no reason to believe that this is anything more than a criminal act. Reporter a woman, a bystander, suffered minor injuries. Dawsons wounds required surgery. Scott, the Visitors Center was built in part to keep an active shooter out of the capitol itself after a 1998 shooting that killed two Capitol Police officers. Pelley kris van cleave, thank you. F. B. I. Has broken the rock on the iphone of one of the terrorists in the San Bernardino massacre. This may end the legal battle with apple that could have defined privacy for the 21st century. A judge had ordered apple to help the f. B. I. , but apple refused. Chip reid is following this latebreaking story. Chip . Reporter well, scott, after this mass shooting in San Bernardino in december, investigators found the iphone of one of the two shooters, and they wanted to get inside it to learn everything about them they possibly could. So they asked apple to help them. Apple said no because they did not want to sec a precedent for violating the privacy rights of iphone users. The Justice Department then sued apple and a federal magistrate agreed with the government that apple would have to cooperate. Well, today the Justice Department withdrew from the case and issued a statement saying, with the recent sis assistants of a third party, we are now able to unlock that iphone without compromising any information on the phone. So, scott, at least for now a major point of contention between privacy advocates and Law Enforcement agencies in the Obama Administration has been put to rest. Pelley chip reid at the white house this evening. Chip, thank you. Well, there was a serious setback today in the investigation into the brussels terror attacks. Police released the man that they believed was their prime suspect. Today the number of dead rose to 35, including four americans. 340 were wounded. Debora patta is in brussels. Reporter Belgian Police today released a new airport surveillance tape just before the bombing but had to admit they are no closer to putting name to the face of this person, a dangerous fugitive known only as the man in the hat. Freelance journalist Faycal Cheffou had been picked up by police last thursday and charged with terrorism and murder, but he was mistakenly identified as being the suspected third airport bomber by the taxi driver who drove the attackers there. Police released cheffou today, due to a lack of evidence against him. Wellknown talk show host vince kante used to work with cheffou at a local radio station. Before cheffous release, he told us it was obvious that the man in the larger than him. I knew it. I was like, what the . Its not possible. Reporter but the Constant Police bungling is no laughing matter. Despite frequent raids, investigators appear no closer to finding the mysterious man in the hat. The superintendent of the apartment that was apparently the attackers bombmaking factory was too scared to go on camera, but talked to us in the doorway. He told us that there were five men who came and went regularly from the apartment, that they were in a hurry to rent it, paid cash up front and used a fake identity, michael dos santos. He became suspicious that something strange was going on when chemicals leaked through the ceiling into the apartment below theirs. The superintendent also smelled a noxious odor coming from their rooms. The superintendent did not report this to police because he criminal was going on. It was only when investigators raided the place immediately after the bombings that a deadly haul of explosives and chemicals were found. Pelley debora patta in brussels tonight, debra, thank you. Isis claims responsibility for the attack, and allen pizzey reports that investigators are finding isis operatives throughout europe. Reporter rubbing salt on the wounds it inflicted, isis has put out a slick new video taunting europes efforts to fight terrorism. We are everywhere, the jihadi screams the french. We are capable of striking wherever we want whenever we want and whoever we want. Right now that just might be true. A series of raids have netted some suspect, but police have barely begun to pick apart the complex net were of terrorist cells. Sings the attack in brussels last tuesday, five suspects stand charged, two connected to a foiled plot in france, three for four alleged terrorists have been held in the new zealand, one in france and two in germany. They have been linked in a deadly web. 2 the suspect shot in the leg and arrested at a brussels cab stop and another picked up in a brussels raid are alleged accomplices of a third man arrested in france in what Police Called an advanced stage of planning for a fresh attack. On saturday, Italian Police picked up an algerian on an arrest warrant issued by the belgians in january. Hes thought to be part of a forgery ring that provided false documents for one of the Brussels Airport suicide bombers, a gunman killed in a shootout here in march and the only survivor of paris attackers. Estimates of how many more terrorist cells there are vary wildly, scott. Whats increasingly clear, however, is that isis has spun a web more complex than anyone had imagined. Pelley allen pizzey in brussels for us tonight. Allen, thank you. Well, the complexity of islamic extremism has reached again into pakistan where at least 72 people enjoying an afternoon in the park were killed by a suicide bomber. The attack in the city of lahore was an assault on christians on their most sacred holy day. Elizabeth palmer has details. Reporter in the coffin, 16yearold sharon petra, just one of the victims of yesterdays attack. Targeted on Easter Sunday because of her familys christian faith. But in crowded public parks like the one in lahore, bombs dont discriminate. Most of the parents left desperately looking for their children in the chaos were muslims. Afzal was on the scene. The kids, he said, were on fairground rides when the bomb went off. I carried 20 to be taken to the hospital. They were loaded on the ambulances and rushed away. The anxious parents of survivors hovered at their bedside while the devastated families of the heartbreak. This evening pakistans prime minister, nawaz sharif, went on television, promising the nation that he would do whatever it takes to uproot terrorism. Easier said than done, though. On the weekend, sharif had to order police to disperse islamic hardliners demonstrating in front of the parliament. And his Security Forces face a bewildering array of extremist groups. In an open taunt to the government and to those who support pakistans three million christian, the taliban faction that carried out the lahore bombing has warned it wont be the last. Today pakistans government ordered a crackdown on extremists by police and also by thousands of paramilitaries. But as history shows us, scott, it doesnt take much of a gap in Law Enforcement for a suicide bomber to slip through. Pelley liz palmer reporting in our london newsroom tonight. Liz, thank you. Candidates do about terrorism here at home . We asked Major Garrett to compare the plans of republicans donald trump and ted cruz. We need to be use progress active Law Enforcement and intelligence and National Security resources to prevent radicalization. Reporter to stop an attack in the u. S. Like the ones in paris and brussels, ted cruz wants Law Enforcement to patrol and secure muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized. In the aftermath of 9 11, the new York City Police department used a similar tactic to monitor mosques for terror connections. But y. Y. P. D. Commissioner bill bratton ended that program in 2014 and denounced cruzs idea in a New York Daily News oped, writing, the city does not single out any populace for selective enforcement. John kasich also took a dim view. So what we want to do is create more divisions . Were going to start policing the neighborhoods of muslims . How are we going to do that . Supports cruzs proposal and remains focused on immigration. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. Reporter kasich and cruz opposed that idea, but both favor tight restrictions on immigration from wartorn parts of the middle east. Trump has also called for a return to waterboarding of terror suspects as well as this i would bomb the hell out of isis, yes. Reporter cruz concur, even if the air war inflict civilian casualties. We need a comprehensive strategy to it herly destroy them, that involves carpet bombing them to oblivion. Reporter in an effort to deny trump the necessary delegates, some are rallying to cruzs side. Jeb bush will hold a fundraiser for cruz, and team cruz expects to pick up the endorsement Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker tomorrow. Pelley Major Garrett on the issues tonight. Mange, thank you. Now well eel turn to anthony salvanto, our cbs news director of election, our expert on the delegate count. Anthony, youve been looking at whether trump can be deprived of the delegates he needs. It wont be easy, scott. Trumps delegate lead gives him the clearest path to winning the delegate lead outright. He needs over half the remaining debt gas compared to ted cruz who would need about 80 of them. Thats a tall order especially because trump keeps piling up republican votes, so far more than two million more than ted cruz. Now all the talk is of slowing trump down, keeping him from getting the rest of the delegates he needs but not necessarily overtaking him. Pelley when will we know . The big tests start next week when aprils primaries kick off in wisconsin. Then we head to the northeast where big delegaterich states like new york and pennsylvania hold their primaries. Trump is expected to do well there, but if he stumbles, hell need to pick up of the delegates the keep his pace the rest of the way. Then through may we head through the midwest and the west, places where trump and cruz could run about even. Then we get to june where we get to california, the biggest delegate haul still out there. And thats a place where we think at the current pace trump could either go over the top and clinch the nomination or californians might decide to send this race on to the convention. Pelley all the way out to june. Its not that unusual for a candidate to clinch that late. Its not unusual. In fact, mitt romney clinched the republican nomination in late may of 2012 and then senator barack obama clinched his democratic nomination in june of 2008. What is unusual, scott, is the see the party still at this late date looking for ways to stop its leading votegetter. Anthony salvanto, our director of election, thank you, anthony. On the democratic side, it was a sanders sweep this weekend, Bernie Sanders won the contest in washington state, alaska and hawaii, picking up 55 delegates, but he is still far behind hillary clinton, who already has 72 of the delegates she needs. The republican governor of georgia broke with his party today, nathan deal vetoed a religious liberty bill that many considered antigay. It would have allowed religious organizations to refuse to perform samesex marriages and to fire anyone who violated their beliefs. Several Large Companies including cocacola and disney threatened to boycott georgia had the bill become law. A teenager who campaigned against gun violence is its latest victim. Over the weekend, there were two murders, 28 people shot, including a brave boy who has tried to stop the violence. Dean reynolds is there. Reporter Zarriel Trotter became an Online Sensation after this antiviolence video went viral. I dont want to live around my community where i got to keep on hearing and hearing people keep on getting shot, people keep on getting killed. Reporter but the bloodshed caught up with him friday night. Shots fired, a child shot. Reporter the 13yearold was hit in the back by a stray bullet near his home, an unintended target of a street fight, hes now in critical condition. Steve dunn is a neighbor. Its just tragic. Just too much of this stuff is going on. We have to pray for our young people. Reporter mayor rahm emanuel named a new interim Police Superintendent today, Eddie Johnson is a 27year veteran of the force and a chicago native who is likely to get the permanent job. I people out here shooting and killing, they are destroying our community. Theyre destroying families, and it has to stop. Reporter but how is the question. The fight against gangs and gun violence is not for the Police Department alone. All of us have a role to play. Reporter shootings in chicago are up 98 over last year. Homicides are up 84 . The mayor and others have noted a drop in aggressive Law Enforcement that followed the release of this video, showing an officer shooting and killing 17yearold laquan mcdonald. The officer faces murder charges that. Plus a Justice Department investigation of the police here have left some cops demoralized and less decisive. And the numbers seem to bear that out, scott, because Police Acknowledge that since january, their stops for suspicious behavior have dropped to about 21,000 from 157,000 over the same period last year. Pelley dean reynolds, thanks. Ight back. Feels like everyone can go. Except you. Opioidinduced constipation, oic, is a different type of constipation, which may need a different approach.
