made it about two-thirds of the way from san diego to minneapolis when air traffic controllers lost contact with the pilot at 6:56 p.m. central. an hour later the plane flew over the destination at 37,000 feet and kept going for 150 miles. finally at 8:14, the pilots radioed in, turned around and went back and landed safely. the planes cockpit voice and flight data recorders have arrived in washington at the ntsb but the voice recorder may not provide much help because it only recorded the last 30 minutes of the flight. it is an old school reporters and therefore not much information. we want to look at the situation involving the older flight and tonight we are joined by captain weiss of the allied pilots association. captain weiss is also a member of the civil aviation association, and of course, everybody, all the civilians are talking about this. is it plausible that an argument on that plane in the cockpit could distract the pilots enough they would fly 150 miles without knowing. >> it seems hard to believe. one of the things we practice for years and i flew for a major airline for 24 years is distractions and how to cope with that. at all times, one pilot is always supposed to be flying the plane. apparently in this case that wasn't the case. >> reporter: they keep talking about the possible factors. is it plausible that both pilots would fall asleep for that long of a period of time. >> fatigue has been around for a long time. it's been an issue for 30 to 40 years and that has a lot to do with the fact that over the years the faa has had a dual mandate. one of the areas they have to be concerned with is safety and the other area they were concerned with is promoting commerce and it seems like over the ear years promoting commerce is a high dollar issue and that's always trumped safety. >> reporter: so what is your sense of how fatigued pilots are? we know some of the small airplanes don't pay much to pilots commuting back and forth, but this is northwest, one of the big boys. >> well, commuting is a fact of life with an airline. your pay is based upon the weight of the aircraft. so the larger the plane you fly, the more pay you'll get. so people will commute to go to work. >> so you are saying that pilots are -- it is an issue no matter what airline. >> it is irrelevant what airline it is. fatigue is an issue and has been for a long time. >> if they are caught sleeping in the cockpit are they in big trouble. >> that's not for me to determine but i believe that fatigue is finally being addressed after 40 years with the latest faa reauthorization bill. >> if they were overtime because of their schedules maybe it is not their fault. >> i think it is, a number of the european carriers and other carriers in asia allow their pilots to take short naps on the enroute portion of the flight so you can be awake and alert during a high workload, during landing which is the most important time. >> absolutely. >> mark weiss of the
