officers officers. >> reporter: pentagon force protection police chief says investigators are still counting up all the rounds that were fired in the middle of rush hour last night at a metro stop that was miraculously free of bystanders [ inaudible ] two pentagon force protection officers are recovering at home now. jeffrey amos was hit in the thigh. his colleague marvin carraway insisted on walking in the hospital with a superficial wound to his shoulder. >> we have medic coming for the patient [ inaudible ] transport to gw. at this time respiratory arrest. >> reporter: john patrick bedell died soon after arriving at gw with a shot to the arm and a massive gunshot wound to the head. investigates believe he acted alone. >> he was very well dressed, in a suit. there was no indication, based on the way he was dressed he had hostile intent. >> reporter: investigators say john patrick bedell went on a cross country odyssey from california to washington in a toyota avalon loaded with ammunition. >> he was very well armed. he had two nine millimeter semi automatic weapons and many magazines. >> reporter: surveillance tape allegedly shows john patrick bedell approaching the two officers near the metro stop, reaching in to his pocket, as though to show an i.d., and then opening fire. >> there is no indication at this point that there are any domestic or international terrorism nexus to this at all. at this time it appears to be a single individual who had issues. >> reporter: pentagon force protection officers have trained and drilled and trained again for just this kind of active shooter situation. especially after the ft. hood shootings. he says his officers acted appropriately and he had no plans to change the way that the force does business. >> all right. those pentagon police officers, as bruce mentioned on duty during the shooting acted swiftly to save lives. audrey barnes has more on how they are coping tonight. audrey? >> both of those injured pentagon police officers were treated and released from the hospital. they are now marked cruisers parked outside of both of their homes. one in clinton, maryland and the other in woodbridge, virginia. we are slowly learning more about these brave men who investigators say neutralized an armed suspect before he could get inside the pentagon. 46-year-old officer jeffrey amos has been part of the pentagon force protection agency for ten months. he and 44-year-old officer marvin carraway, a 15-month veteran of the force were at their security check points, adjacent to the pentagon metro entrance when john patrick bedell walked up and started shooting. striking one in the thigh and the other in the shoulder. >> the officers are okay. they are on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and healing from their injuries. >> amos is a veteran of the air force and marvin carraway is a former marine. both completed a 22-week training court at the law enforcement training center run by the department of homeland security. they were checking i.d. badges when they came under attack. the chief of the pentagon police force says he doesn't think the shooting will result in any changes in protocol. >> the ft. hood incident put us on notice it could happen, even in a military reservation. we took the appropriate actions. we trained our officers and it worked no, sir, i'm not going to change the way we are doing business. >> there was actually a third officer who engaged in the gun battle with bedell along with amiss and marvin carraway. his name has not been released. it is too soon to say whose weapon fired the fatal shot that ended it all. we will tell you more about the background of the alleged shooter. now to a followup in to the death of a local 2-year-old. dc attorney general peter nichols will be investigating the death of stephanie stevens. last month the little girl was having trouble breathing so her mother called 911. paramedics respond pd but did not take her to the hospital. sources say the medics did not follow protocol to have the mother sign a form refusing the service of the medics. nine hours later, the family called 911 again. a different crew took stephanie to the hospital where she died the next a -- next day. more now on thursday's deadly plane crash in louisa, virginia. the pilot was burned beyond recognition. the ntsb is investigating and holding a police -- or held rather a news conference today. armando trull is live in reston with more on that. >> reporter: well, right now they have not identified who the pilot was who lost his life in the crash. we believe he is james young who lives down the street. we have seen a lot of people come to his home the last few hours bringing covered dishes, flowers. a lot of them offering condolences to a man, who by all accounts was very loved by his friends and neighbors. >> reporter: ntsb investigators are still not sure why the cessna 303 crusader crashed in to the louisa home on thursday shortly after noon. >> the witnesses described it as a right bank vertical descent. witnesses are providing some clues. >> two witnesses said they saw grayish, blackish smoke coming from the right engine. >> reporter: the twin-engine plane crashed minutes after taking off from the louisa county airport where it had just refueled. >> it appears it did not actually crash in to the house. it crashed in the front yard in the ensuing explosion did the majority of the damage to the house. >> reporter: the plane is registered to 63-year-old james youngquist. he was scheduled to umpire a baseball game. and authorities expect do have the autopsy concluded by monday and say they will release officially the name of the pilot at that point. the investigation in to the crash by the ntsb will take as long as six months to wrap up. reporting live at reston, armando trull , 9 news now. >> all right. breaking news out of arizona about a different kind of crash. federal investigators say the company whose tour bus was involved in this deadly crash this morning was operating illegally. it took place this morning near phoenix. the tour bus was on an overnight trip from central mexico to los angeles when it slammed in to a pickup truck. six people were killed and a dozen others were hurt. more information is emerging at this hour on the background of the suspected pentagon gunman. we will tell you the latest straight ahead. and some other new information tonight on the chaos in college park after the basketball team's big win. topper? pentagon police officers shot last night are okay and out of the hospital. part of the pentagon metro station has reopened and friends say the alleged shooter, 36-year-old john patrick bedell had "gone off the deep end "before he was killed last night as police returned fire. his family released a statement a short time ago. >> we may never know why he made this terrible decision. one thing is certain, though, his actions were caused by an illness, and not a defective character. >> reporter: andrea mccarren has more on the alleged gunman's background. >> it turns out that january was a tumultuous month for john patrick bedell. he was stopped by police in texas. the highway patrolman was so concerned about his behavior and noted his car was in such disarray that he used his cell phone to call his mother in california. that was the first in a series of events in january that raised the concerns of bedell's parents, a prominent financial planner and a nurse living in the small town of hollister, california. >> on the 10th of january, he had made a $600 purchase at a shooting range in the sacramento area. >> reporter: that purchase led bedell's parents to alert authorities their 36-year-old son was missing and may have a weapon. he left behind a trail of angry, on-line postings. rants against the government, including suspicions that the u.s. was somehow behind the 9/11 attacks. also on-line, this rambling youtube video posted in 2006. >> hi. i'm happy to have the opportunity to talk to you today about information. >> reporter: he uses stick figures to detail what he calls his own invention to manage information and make money. sources tell 9 news that bedell had a troubling history of marijuana use and had been in and out of mental health facilities, but he did not appear on on the radar of federal officials. his criminal history stretches over several years and jurisdictions. court records show in 2007 he was charged with exhibiting a deadly weapon. he pled no contest and did 20 days of community service. bedell was also arrested in 2006 for cultivating marijuana and resisting arrest. a very troubled history. >> certainly sounds that way. even digging all day long, what do you know about the guns bedell was allegedly using. >> what we know at this point is he used two nine millimeter guns in the attack and we had been hoping to get the results of the bureau of alcohol and tobacco and firearms trace on the guns. that will not be prepared by today. probably sometime next week. to find out where the guns were purchased, whether they were obtained legally and whether they were registered. >> thank you for that. >> you bet. in our coverage of the story last night and this morning, we incorrectly identified a picture as that of the shooting suspect, john patrick bedell. this is the correct picture of john patrick bedell released today by the fbi. 9 news now regrets the error. new tonight and caught on tape, more fallout from that confrontation between police and students at the university of maryland. in the wake of the big basketball win over duke on wednesday night. there's so much video out there now that there are facebook pages and youtube sites specifically dedicated to the incident. >> literally everyone had their phone out. every phone comes with a camera. >> maybe an hour after we got back they started a facebook group. >> i saw a video of a kid getting beat up for not doing anything. >> it is thoroughly documented. there are hundreds of videos and half you are not going to see because the kids are worried about the university prosecuting them for being there. many students say most of what they have seen shows police going too far. there have been no formal use of force complaints filed yet. a bizarre crime scene in norfolk, virginia. this morning police chased down a man wanted on a charge of rape. he told officers he swallowed pills in an apparent suicide attempt. on the way to the hospital he also told them he dropped a homemade bomb in some bushes near an elementary school. police shut down the area, found the device. bomb squad safely detonated it and as you can imagine it left neighbors shaken. >> as long as they found it. i don't know. that is a crazy situation. >> reporter: no one was hurt and the elementary school finally opened for classes. a trusted school employee is charged with stealing almost $300,000. susan litman worked at thomas jefferson high school. police say she allegedly wrote checks from the school's account for two years. prosecutors say she stole $280,000 and used the money to fuel a gambling habit. she resigned earlier this week. well, it's friday and if i had more of a voice i'd sing my favorite friday song. so you will have to forgive that. >> we'll
