[ cheering ] >> reporter: house democrats won the battle over health care reform by a narrow margin but they face fierce opposition in the senate. >> the house bill is dead on arrival in the senate. just look at how it passed. it was a bill written by liberals for liberals. >> reporter: just one republican lending support. the $1.2trillion health care overhaul is the most far reaching since the creation of medicare more than four decades ago. the bill requires individuals to carry insurance. and includes a controversial government-run public option. to pay for the surge many coverage the legislation would cut medicare by $400 billion over a decade and raise taxes on the wealthy. >> the fact that the leadership had to break arms and still lost almost 40 democrats, shows what real trouble they will have in the senate. >> we are far from the debate in the senate. it will take time. it will be careful, thorough and deliberate. >> reporter: but lawmakers are working under a tight deadline. president obama has said he expects a final bill on his desk by the end of the year. sunday the president urged senators to act quickly and decisively. >> now it falls on the united states senate to take the baton and bring this effort to the finish line on baffle of behalf of the american people. >> what the bill will look like when it gets there is anyone's guess. kathryn brown, cbs news washington. >> it is not likely to move ahead this week on the health care legislation. new developments from fort hood tonight. the loan lone gunman attended the same mosque as two of the september 11 hijackers in 2001. law enforcement officials say it is something they will look into. the director says he doesn't know if hasan ever prayed there. military officials are reaching out to the families of the victims trying to make sure they are receiving the proper emotional and physical support. >> we might be a small community to some people. but we have big hearts. >> military families make great sacrifices and support each other. >> we encourage all of our soldiers and family members impacted by this to seek assistance. even those that may not have been directly involved. >> reporter: hasan is suspected of killing 13 people. seven people are in intensive care. hasan is in stable but critical condition in a hospital in san antonio and has not yet been charged in the killing rampage. the man convicted of sniper killings that terrorized the washington area seven years ago is scheduled to be executed on tuesday. john mohammed is set to die by lethal injection in virginia. he and another were responsible for some 13 shootings and 10 deaths over a three-week span. authorities say they will never know if they were responsible for more blood shed and suffering and a plea agreement to escape the death penalty the one accused testified against mohammed. washington redskins losing again to atlanta dropping their record to a dismal 2-6 and prompting this remark from former quarterback and hall of famer sonny jergson. he said not even vince lombardi could win with this team. >> come on. >> has been a skins fan for a while. >> i will be 40 next sunday so 39 years and 51 weeks. >> still wearing the burgundy and gold found some life in his team today. >> all right. 1st down washington. yes. >> reporter: but it didn't last. >> what are you doing?
