Here to celebrate him but the presidency himself and i think thats how it was with barack obama or george bush or clinton. And bruce, you are no stranger, but a veteran of the parades. High bruce. Hey, lesli. Im at 13th and pennsylvania. The Police Mounted Unit and color guard came by and we just missed them. We are close to the trump hotel and we are hoping this is where President Trump will step out of the president ial limousine and walks among the crowd here but we have no idea, and the security concerns are big. There are protesters to be here in freedom plaza. Theres a pretty good group just the other side of e the front, many more Trump Supporters. Ive been struck as i was walking down amongst them how well everybody seems to be getting along despite the divisions that plagued our country. People are polite and talking about where to go out and get good food and enjoy the nightlife in dc. People are excited and have been down here for hours trying to get up against the barriers to get the best possible view. We talked about it before, the members of the u. S. Military standing in an honor guard formation for their new commanderinchief and then a whole lot of Police Officers from fairfax county, arlington county, police all providing security and ensuring theres no trouble along the parade route. Of course, there have been protesters along in the past. George w. Bush, as you mentioned, it was a cold and drizzly day during the first inauguration, the first inaugural parade and protesters down here at the naval memorial were pushing and forceful enough and were able to get close enough that the secret service stopped george bushs motorcade for a period of time to make sure it was safe for him to pass and he went ahead and passed. You go back to richard nixon, and that was before my time but there were rocks and comatey ons during Richard Nixons parade. They dont expect that here. Produce, thank you for the context there. And we are looking at how the protest not the protest. Im sorry. I have protests and the parade in the forgive me for that. Protests around the parade and the parade is Going Forward and everyone is waiting to see the president. Just went by, the procession just went by and you heard a raucous round of applause. I was craning a new neck but i couldnt see it, and the motor scad going towards Bruce Johnson at Lafayette Park. Bruce. Guys, i was thinking of President Trumps speech and i went back and asked, was it an inclusive speech . To me t sounded more like he is in campaign mode. If you want to get on the trump band wagon, theres room for you. But i didnt get the impression he discovered had this time that was not there before and he what do you think . What impressions did you get . I think we were struck by the same thing and you wonder how the president will pivot from the speech. It will be generated to the very people who elected him but he acknowledges he will be the president for all people and lenny, it sounds like he has a ways to go to really open the tent to all americans. He says it, but at some times, the speech seemed to be formulated to those who voted for him. He definite say patriotism has no prejudice and whether black, brown, white, we all bleed red. But i think his whole not to use soothing rhetoricif goals, if we restore pride in the country, he is suggesting that we dont have pride in our country, we will be unified through the accomplishment of his deeds and the accomplishment he argues of what he says will be making America Great again. Lets go to peggy fox quickly with a great view of whats going on peg . Yeah. We see a lot of Police Vehicles coming along but we cant lay eyes at this point, but we do see, of course, the press, all the photographers in the trucks behind the Police Officers and there are people on the rooftops with a great view up here as you all do as well. But the crowds are big. They are not huge. They are not packed in like sardines. But people are here documenting for themselves and witnessing for themselves this inauguration. And as bruce was saying, ive seen both Trump Supporters and trump protesters getting along and talking. We do see, we do finally see the walk i see people walking. My eyes arent that great but can you tell me if a little distant for me but everybody is getting very excited and starting to chant usa. Theres the limousine with the number one on the license plate. We see that. And its still moving. Maybe theres hope that President Trump will emerge and do walking, but we dont see signs of that just yet. You are at 8th or 9th street, peggy. Is that right . 7th and pennsylvania which is right archives. So here we go right here. All the secret Service Agents and just a reminder that trump hotel is at 12th and pennsylvania. Its at 12th street, five blocks away from here. So were all waiting. Well see if this crowd can encourage him to get out. We know the president feeds on the energy of people who support him and are excited about him and were looking to see if to see if that vehicle is going to stop. Its still going. Its still going. Lenny, its still going. Whats the energy there, peggy . Everyone is clapping. People have phones in their hands, so we would not be hearing the clapping wh and we dont see him stopping. He is not slowing down. Maybe he will stop at the trump hotel. There he goes. Everybody is excited. Keeps going. And peggy, the view here, he is not stopping, and a lot of people on the parade route have signs not supportive of his presidency. He just kept going. Oh thats right. And now, most of the protest signs are across the street on the other side, the side that the white house is on. And, yeah. Im looking at dozens, dozens of antitrump signs, so maybe thats why he is not stopping. Maybe this is not friendly territory, and maybe he is not going to stop. If you were his security advisor, would you advise him to stop . I am sure probably every and it appears that the the moving at a wedding march pacen walking more quickly as the motorcade is just moving a little faster as they inch closer to where we all think we might see donald trump, at the hotel. Go ahead. Right. I dont know if that means anything. You know, the front part of the parade, there were marchers and people on foot and now we have the vehicles going along and it might be that effect. Who knows . It seems to start a bit later than what we thought it was going to be. And theres plenty of more marchers behind. Peg, im going to stop you for just 8,000 people in the parade. Got it. Peg, thank you so much, and we will go over to memorial with another angle from the parade route anbypeopl are excited and waiting to see the president. Absolutely. They are very excited, and i have seen all angles of the story. We started at the Verizon Center with a lot of protesters and angry people and we walked down this way and slowly but surely, the protesters started to drop off and as we got through security, there are supporters with the trump hotel right there and just a sea of people lined up along pennsylvania. We are right here between 10th and 11th street and people have their phones out and were cheering. Pence just went through and we had a lot of excited people, and they are waiting for the president to be coming through here. Where are you coming from . This is the most exciting thing ive ever seen. Why are you excited to be here . Im excited to be here because of the fact that donald trumwi United States, i believe. And i think that he stands for a lot of human values and he will get a lot of out of washington. We had a lot of protesters and supporters, and what does it mean for you, yourself as a supporter . We pretty much ignored them and they do their own thing. We havent seen so much violence, and a lot of the media is blowing up about them lighting fires and we havent seen anything on that level and we are just doing our own thing celebrating. Whats the big moment . When don and pence come. I think mr. Pence has come through but mr. Trump hasnt. Right . Yeah. And i am not going to block you anymore. Thank you so much, michael. Before security, i saw so many protesters. A lot okay. Ill let my photographer pan over. It looks like were getting close the big cheers. But i want to tell you guys, as soon as we got through security, the protesters dropped off and its been peaceful and calm and a supportive environment and a lot of happy people and people from all walks of life all just to stand along the parade route even when it started raining, it doesnt stop. Okay. I think he is about to come through right now and ill toss it back to you guys in the studio. Great. We are watching closely but although our screen is frozen again. We cant see whats going on. Maybe if ben you are back at the station and looking, you can tell us if the president has emerged. They are out of the car and there we go, President Trump, melania trump, first lady, baron, all of them walking along pennsylvania now. Can you tell us where they are . Is several cars behind the president , and they didnt ride together in the same car. This is bruce. Go ahead, bruce. This is bruce in front of the white house and i have a monitor and i can tell that you he is walking along pennsylvania avenue and as we called it, he will be passing in front of the trump hotel from my Vantage Point of view. Not a surprise; right . Not a surprise. He he is walking down the middle of pennsylvania avenue. Melanias with him. By the way, my wife loves the outfit shes got on today. I want to pass that along. Crowds on both sides cheering, holding hands. This has become a familiar scene at inaugurations. Its the thing that people look forward to, and not everybody can touch the president or the first lady or the first family but this gives opportunity to feel like they have wrapped a collective arm around them because theyre able to see them as close as possible. Right, lenny . I hope so because you dont want the security completely this is the president of the people. And in terms of symbolism, walking on the avenue, close to the white house and waving at the people, and it just confirms the idea that we are a popular democracy in which people do really have the power to vote and be able to make a decision about the future of this country. Lenny, lenny, if i can interject, you are absolutely right. This sends a message of not just the American People but the world. We can protect our president , to interrupt you for a second. It looks like it was short lived. So the president did appear to walk for, what, less than a block as far as you can see . Our screen, its in an interesting state of of about half a block. Of course, theres no protocol. Different president s handed this different ways. You mentioned jimmy carter who walked the entirety of the mile and a half parade route and we mentioned that the parade was canceled for reagans second inaugural. And this day and this moment is steeped in so many traditions. And right in front of the Trump International hotel, much as we suspected. This is an unscripted moment left up to the president as how he wants to handle it. Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama walked a good deal because of community and wanting to be accessible and showed home down washington that these two inhabitants of the nations capitol would try to be of them and not just in the city. I think thats a good point. The question will be tell donald trump be just in washington or be of washington and will he get out in the community and meet with the people and establish connections with the people who are living here . After all, everyone living here is just as american faze you in montana or wyoming or kansas or nebraska. And one of the big things here the district will advocate for is Voting Rights, will they get full without restation. Representation. And i think it was president clinton who outfitted that limo with one of those license plates. I didnt see that in the license plate on the car that President Trump was riding in. At least certainly, its his intention to transform washington. To what extent will it influence how things play out . President obama said i will not be the guy thats in there waging the battles. To what extent does president alabama bam obama play in the next four years . They have nobody in the statehouse viewer governors, viewer legislators and no majority in congress at all, so president obama is the defacto voice when he thinks that President Trump crosses a line and i think it will be on issues like immigration or voting or health care. And i think president obama will keep his powder dry up until the time that he feels donald trump has crossed that line. And then his voice is much more effective. Hey, guys . Yeah, go ahead. Let me jump in here. Anyone expecting dc Voting Rights to be expanded under this administration can forget it. The dc delegate comment republican would not be shy about telling you that. The parade is in front of the president ial viewing stand. Expect to see that momentarily, and president obama has made it clear hes not going to be weighing in often on what this president does, and certainly, theres question as to whether or not donald trump plans to become a resident, a regular neighbor of the district of columbia. We were talking to a fairly well connected republican last night and he set dont be surprised if President Trump lived here 3 or 4 days a week and spent time in new york city. We know melania and baron will go back to new york at the end of the weekend because he is still in school but we were also told by trum condo in the south watergate complex. Thats interesting meaning that some people will be coming here. That will be interesting. He was an unconventional candidate and he will be an unconventional president , and we think about president obama a former president obama and the first lady and they were a multigenerational family that moved into the white house. We cant undethe operatics of what that mean not only to be the first African American president and also to have an africanamerican family as the image of the first family of the nation and how entrenched they were in the community and you contract that can President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump and baron and wonder if they will spend a significant amount of time here. Will they adopt a cause an and about . Thats what people here want to know. If he doesnt make this sort of his home rather than just a place of work, it would be consistent with his inaugural speech saying that washington is out of touch with america and it will be symbolic saying i am not a captive of washington. I will not be dragged in by washington this, culture that takes and doesnt get back. Bruce, is there a lightened lighten heightened level of excitement . Have the empty spots filled in or would secret service already decide who would be adam, the heightened level of excitement is not here yet. I think it will be when the first family arrives but they are not here yet. Not a large crowd. Not a large crowd. And another thing when we are talking about what kind of resident of washington President Trump will be, another insider told me that he realizes his base, his support is outside the city as lenny was seeing, and dont be surprised to see him travel. He will travel to those places, those red states and hold an immediate rally and point to people and say i cant make America Great because your congressman is causing me troubles, and a republicans may have problems but they are saying nothing. The quote was we are keeping our powder dry. All rules are off. All the people are waiting to see what kind of a President Donald Trump is. I dont think we know at this point. Bruce, i want to see if we have available real quick pete has been covering the protesters at the k street and 12th area. If we have his camera, i would like to go to that. We dont have his camera. He is want aring to reporting that he is seeing flames at his location. We were with him an hour ago when we saw a large group of protesters gathering the garbage cans and things in the middle of the street and lighting them on fire. As soon as we get the images out of there, we will share that with the inauguration, the protest will not be a side note or a quota. They have made their presence known in various parts of the city along the parade route. And thats one of the signature moments of this day, the protesters. And followed by that tomorrow. This is emblematic of the campaign and a polarized country. Donald trump, if he wants to get things done, he has to speak at a level that doesnt alienate people but brings them together. And again, we have had a lot of polarization and it made life in the country very, very difficult. You have families not talking with each recollect. You have friends not talking with each recollect. Other. Lenny, lenny, lenny, we have had a lot of conversations with this. Doesnt president trum come to the is part of the divisiveness . His position is the country was divided before i came here. And i dont think donald trump and the people who are close to him believe its possible or thats his role at this point. Do you agree or disagree . I semi agree because the country was polarized for so many years. Remember. We had a president impeached 20 years ago based on something he was doing in the oval office with an intern and vit rol with president obama, so President Trump has to come to understand that some people feel they will never be listened where, again, the protests, some of them, have become tense. Pete . Lesli, things have gotten hot at 13th and k street. There were problems earlier. The limo was set on fire not all that long ago with thick black smoke powering through the intersection, and dc firefighters raced over and put it out and a window was broken, and the fire out in put out. But police are moving back and formed
