Actually at dulles. Get about 3 here in northwest d. C. Okay, heres the radar, big picture, so the storm is essentially past our parallel now. So all the heavy precipitation and all the moisture is moving up into new england. Yes, were going to have a couple of snow showers over the next couple of hours but we get break in the snow and the mix for now. So well have some p. M. Snow showers later in the afternoon. And just monster begins to work its way up the coast. And were going to see some pretty good winds here tonight. Were a little bit concerned about that and we talked about that all morning with some Power Outages. Heres the next line of snow showers that will push through. The good news is temps are now essentially above freezing just about everywhere. In fact its 37 at national and little bit of snow shower activity on the east side of the beltway. As you head out 50 towards bowie and also into the annapolis area. But look at the temps, this is encouraging. 36 in manassas and 37 downtown and we went low 40s today. At least for downtown. Youre still stuck on 32. Hagerstown martinsburg and winchester. But i think even you will make little line of snow showers rolls through. By 2 00 snow showers. Still pushing through the metro area with temperatures above freezing. So we dont see any more accumulating snow. By 4 00 nows kind of snow showers kind of lingering and hanging on and into the 6 00 hour and more snow showers possibly even into parts of southern maryland. But again good news temperatures are above freezing across the board. We begin to clear out by 9 30. But then the winds pick up. Well come back and talk about the winds and also show you some pictures that you can send in and remember, send in your pictures and hashtag snowday9. Back to you guys. All right thanks topper. Now the storm is winding down a lot of people are starting to get out in their cars. They are, ellen bryan is monitoring the road and traffic conditions for you right now. So much better than an hour ago. Metro this morning has had its number of issues right now we have safetrack surge 13. The yellow and blue line single tracking between brad dock road and either huntington or van dorn street. Plus metrobus this morning went down to that will be in effect for all of today. Still not taking the buses on to some roads and metro access will be back open tomorrow. Out on the roads we still have a closure on route 5. Both north and southbound. Galon green and brian town road. A lot of trouble in . Area. Branch avenue and pennsylvania avenue and 301 with some trees down and some trees hanging over the roadways or branches down in that area as well. Kenilworth avenue southbound, this is been problem all morning as well. Route 410 between there and windham road a lane is open. Two lanes still blocked but at least you can get by there. We had a utility problem and pole was down earlier. Inner loop of the beltway has opened back up and magically all of the ysda that were back to dulles are gone as well. So youll be fine if you are trying to cross the American Legion bridge and then another big area where we had a pole down a utility pole, clopper road right at highway 124. And first field road. That has been major area weve i en watching this morning. Out miller was out in sheehy Storm Tracker 9 all morning and i think he passed by this. Youre in gaithersburg right larry . What are you seeing there . Reporter yeah. So were in gaithersburg this morning. You know, weve been roaming all around the area for the most part and got to let you know we kind of wanted to check on the side streets, so many people said hey what about the streets in front of homes you know smaller areas and alleys . At least in gaithersburg things are looking well for the most part. You know pretty clear street. No ice. And it looks like the neighborhoods are really taking to the [ inaudible ] [ no audio ] okay so we just lost the connection there with larry but well try to get him if we can. Physical we can get our connection back together with him. So d. C. And Calvert County, maryland are the only students who actually had to go to class today. Everybody else has the day off. Both School Systems decided to open two hours later this morning. Alex is that back joins us now live from southeast d. C. With a look at how getting to school in the snow. Howd they do . Reporter well, i can tell you we actually talked to several parents and saw several parents who live close enough to make it through this stuff right here. And then after that, they got their kids out here to the elementary school. They did okay right there. It to show you some video i want to show you some video of that around here around 10 30 this morning, that was a couple hours later than usual and obviously other parents had to drive their kids through the messy roads to get to the place. Now just a short time i talked to parents who disagree about whether that was worth the risk. Its okay i mine the weather is not bad. And clearly its not snowing as much as we thought it was going to. And since the school is so close to us, we dont have to drive. So i mean, its its good that he gets a chance to go to school and see his friends. I think its a safety issue. So you know, we dont have school buses to get to schools the kids to school safely. So i mean, i think staying idea. Reporter so people disagree about that issue but back here live you can see the cleanup continues. Throughout this mess. But it has been a little bit more moderate recently and we did talk to one other parent who said theyre not sure whether school should have been open or closed today. But they are definitely glad there was a delay. Guys back to you. Yeah because its still kind of slippery on the roads even. You know whats so interesting is youre from chicago where they never close school. They have the roads closed the fast. They have a lot of equipment. Reporter yeah. They do. Theres many resources over there. And weve seen some here as weve been look out on the roads the snowplow plows have been coming and slowly theres progress being made. But definitely chicago knows how to handle the big snowstorms. New york city does as well. Thank you sir. Thanks alex. Good to have you. Well, with snowfall totals in and around the d. C. Area, Loudoun County was rig bullseye of thatinter storm. Thats right. Evan koslof has been out there in leesburg all morning long. Joins us now with what it looks like as we speak. I see some pavement evan. Reporter yeah. So its been its been a really interesting morning where for a while, the roads looked really messy. Now just look at it. Its looking pretty clear right now. Yes wet and so you still need to be careful but really theyve done a pretty good job of plowing it out and now people are digging it out of all ages. Look at these two here. Theyve got some small shovels can theyre doing some shoveling. And meanwhile, weve got mom over here. And so so mom, what was it looking like when you first got out here this morning . So first thing this morning, it was pretty wet. Pretty heavy snow. Now the plows come through. Neighbors been through with the snow blower and looking pretty good right now. Than our middle section here. But still hoping for day off of school tomorrow. Reporter yeah. I was just saying the roads look good and she said dont say that. Stay ad thats right bus stops arent cleared yet. We need wade buyer to give us a call tomorrow and well all be happy. Reporter okay great. So the kids now is it all just about having a snow day having a good time . Just having fun. And shoveling out. And letting them play in the snow. And do what they want really. Until they get too cold and then well go in and have some hot chocolate. Reporter all right there you go. Ill get one as well. By the way theres massive sledding competition going just right over there. I might have to check that out after that. I would stay away from that if i were you evan. Dont embarrass us, already shown that yeah. Reporter after last time yeah. Yeah. Lot of fun today evan. Thanks buddy. Okay so areas south and east of washington the problem there with this winter storm has been ice and in some cases significant rain too. Yeah Delia Goncalves has been all over Prince Georges County this morning. And she joins us now live with what she is seeing where she is now. Good morning delia. Reporter well, weve traveled all around and weve made right by the metro in fact. And so there are a few College Students from umd walking to the metro. But take a look at this beautiful walkway. Nice and clear. And we pulled over because we saw jim and manuel whove done a great job clearing. They own this house which occupies a corner lot. And so they have been working hard, shoveling the snow. And im told they have been out since like 9 30 right jim . So im going to come heavier very carefully because the come over very carefully because the sidewalk is still slick but theres some melting going on. This is not snow. And i think its the melting and the snow falling off the and water falling off the trees. And the lines as well. Which is good news. Youve been out for about a few hours. What is it like . Its heavy snow. Its heavy and its tiring. But ill tell you what, this plow thing rather than the back breaking shovel is a lot better. And then i remember spray it with pam. Reporter ooh. Thats a smart temperature thats a great tip. And pam helps the the snow kind of nonstick spray. I mean it works for everything. So manuel, tell me, you not only took care of your corner lot, but another house as well. Yes, maam. We have a friend of ours who is away in january. And we keep it maintained, the house. Very nice and youve been longtime homeowners here in college park. So this is about taking care of your neighbors. Taking care of your neighborhood. And doing what you can. But hopefully not breaking your back while youre doing it. No. This is the exercise for the winter you know. This is the if you dont go to the gym, you shovel snow. So this is the first opportunity this year. Reporter all right. I thought we were going to get away with it. Reporter first and last, hopefully last. Thats the latest here from jim and manuels front yard. In college park. Back to you. Very nice guy taking care of at womans house. And i mean that snow today is heavy. Please be carolful if youre solve careful if youre shenandoah valleying out there. Southern maryland, the weight of all the ice brought down a tree on the side of pennsylvania avenue in waldorf. Coating of the ice on a lot of the trees in the same area was an issue this morning and we lad a lot of these acrossroads throughout the morning. A thin layer of ice also causing scenes like this in southern maryland. An ice covered tree branch came in contact with the power line and started smoking and sparked a small fire in la plata. Causing tens of thousands of outages across d. C. And virginia. I still think video here is incredible that everybody captured as it was happening and you can see it started so quickly. Look at it you can even hear it. A melt row bus no match for the snowstorm this morning. It was stuck on connecticut avenue at r street. People on board were taken off and had to get on another bus just above dupont circle. Bus service a moderate snow service plan. Which is basically like a saturday schedule. Metro rail trains are running about every 12 minutes were told. All right, so the know is definitely snow is definitely piling up in upstate new york. More than 2 feet now expected in binghamton. Just making driving treacherous right now. The governor banned tractor trailers from interstate highways. Snow did start falling in new york city this morning. Schools and aboveground subways, we are told, are now all closed but like us, sleet, and freezing rain were all maked in that. That kept mixed in. A kept a lot of the snow totals down. 3 to 6 i think for many including parts of the city. Thats down dramatically from the entire snow event. Coastal flooding also now a concern in south jersey because freezing rain and high winds are now kicking up the waves. Forecasters say the storm is likely to intensify throughout the day. So this is what it looks like right now. When you check out the first alert live doppler you can see the system pretty you cant even see any green or any of the colors except for a little bit of cloud cover there. Just the temperatures or something more from the sky is going to fall . Topper has the full forecast coming up. Welcome back. The bald eagles nesting at the National Arboretum are weathering the storm too. Doing a good job. Two eagles are huppingered down over the two eggs and millions are watching and waiting for the eaglets to watch. D. C. Four and d. C. Five they would be dubbed right now. Thats expected to happen by the last week of the month. So theres still to word yet on the impact the winter storm could have on the world famous Cherry Blossoms, the National Park service is concerned though the much colder than normal temperatures over the next few days could kill many of the blossoms. If the temperature gets down to 24 degrees, there could be a 90 loss of the blossoms along the tidal basin. Can you believe thats a lot. Temperatures are forecasted to be lower than that tomorrow. And thursday night. So thats kind of a scary thought. And you know what it was so warm they didnt know what to do and they started blossoming and blooming and now were getting all the cold. I guess the good news, bad news good news, if the winds keep up which they will tonight. That will keep the temperatures up a little bit and Cherry Blossom you know down there. So maybe it wont make it to 24. Were going like 28. I know were splitting hairs. Maybe that will help. Anything helps. A Silver Lining here. Right. All right lets talk about the yellow weather alert. Thats going to continue for the refreezing and for the low windchills. Weve got all kinds of impact here, we have refreezing tonight and high impact there. Travel delays are extreme right now. Especially to the north. Also a wet commute a moderate commute if you a risk rather if youre home and you are trying at work rather trying to get home tonight. Could have some wet roads but theyll be wet. Be above freezing, then Power Outages weve seen a high risk of that all morning. Rt heavy snow again into new england. But they have the same problem we have with that warm area of the warm big nose of warm air kind of making it across 95 and that is turning to sleet as well. The storm is hugging the coast a little bit if it had been just 50 miles offshore wed have had more snow downtown but theres the storm right now moving northeastward and we have a little bit of snow just north of town. And a little bit of snow showers back to the west in through leesburg and also into frederick. Temperatures though above freezing. 36 in leesburg and 36 in gaithersburg. And 37 in frederick. That is a good news. In fact, well widen out the temperatures, 37 also in fredericksburg and now even the friends in cumberland are up to 34. For a look at pictures and snow totals out to the weather terrace with meteorologist melissa nord. Not that much in the way of snow but places we did we had some totals above 10 inches in a few spots. Frostburg, maryland got 8 inches of snow. In parts of frederick, we go elevation. And then a few areas also got above 8 inches as well. This familiar photo from particular photo from middletown. I have a ruler here and chuck sent in this. They actually got 8 inches there in middletown, maryland. But to the south heres prince frederick, these trees are coated with ice and thats been a major story of this morning. Weve had ice weighing down on trees. On power lines. And in fact during that ice with the lot of wind gusts it has led to some Power Outages and as topper is going show you though the winds not going to let down into the afternoon topper. Some gusts over 30 miles an hour. Yeah were kind of worries about that and also ing to drive down windchills as well. 2 00 this afternoon still the snow showers but temperatures again above freezing. 36 in gaithersburg and 38 downtown. Then by 4 00 still some snow showers. But now were 40 downtown. And 6 00, still some snow showers. Maybe west fairfax, reston, out towards leesburg but were above freezing, not a huge winds begin to pick up and temperatures now start to fall. 30 downtown. Again the winds will act in our favor along the tidal basin keeping temperature thes up a little bit. All right the temperatures up a little bit. All right these are actual observations in the last hour. 28 Miles Per Hour in manassas and heres a the alerts. We have a wind advisory for Calvert County and st. Marys county and wind will gust 50, 55 Miles Per Hour. That expires though in about an hour and a half. 12 00, heres our wind gust tracker. This is a forecast winds gusting 20, 25. By 1 00. 20 to 25 again. By 4 00 off to the west wind gusts almost to 25 in leesburg and notice they pick up by evening. So theyre going to be a little stronger overnight and wind will gust around 30 overnight. Thats going to drive windchills down into the Single Digits tomorrow morning early. By 11 00 tonight, winds are gusting to 30. And in leesburg and 26 in he fredericksburg, gusting to about 25 miles an hour. So next seven days, 41 today and windy and cold. And more flurries tomorrow. 36. Only 39 on thursday. And then were looking at temperatures back in the 40s maybe a rain or snow shower but not a bad st. Paddys day. Then look at that. Finally the 50s return. And well return right after this. Theres work to be done. Its not going to be easy but theres grit inside of you.
