were on vacation. their small child is missing. after being dragged by a gator, at disney world. the father's desperate effort to save his son had failed. don champion at the resort with the latest developments. >> crews searching for the missing 2-year-old snatched into a lake by an alligator admits time is not on their side. >> hope is dimming up with every hour. >> the boy has not been seen since 9:30 tuesday night, when he was playing in shallow water at the seven seas lagoon at disney's grand floridaian resort and spa. the boy's parents an another young sibling were there as the horror unfolded. >> the father was standing nearby. when the alligator attacked the child. the father then went into the water and tried to wrestle the small child from the grip of the alligator. >> do not swim signs are posted in the area. disney has closed all resort beaches out of an abundance of caution. >> we have already alligators and looked at those alligators and determined right now, we couldn't find any evidence that they were involved. >> the family from nebraska had been staying at the luxury resort for a few days. a spokesman for disney says the resort is devastated. and doing what it can for the family. >> the timing of the tragedy has left the orlando community reeling. >> i can't comprehend what any of this would be like as a parent. losing my child. my 20-year-old at the pulse. or my 2-year-old. >> search officials say there has never been an alligator attack like this, at disney. don champion, cbs news, lake buena vista florida. in the wake of the tragedy, disney world has closed all of the beaches today. in orlando, new details are starting to emerge about the shooter in the nightclub massacre. investigators tell cbs news that omar mateen went to work the day of the rampage, went home, and then traveled to that nightclub where he killed 49 people. kenneth >> reporter: investigators say noor salman knew her husband omar mateen wanted to commit a terror act and investigators say she told them she went with the pulse nightclub on at least one occasion and tried to convince not to do through with the attack. cbs news learned mateen went to work as a security in the gated community on the day of the shooting. as he gunned down innocent victims at the gay bar, they say mateen called 911 and went on facebook declaring allegiance to isis and called a local tv station. documentary footage shows mateen working as a security guard in to 20á 10. the material is from the 2012 documentary, the big fix, about the deep water horizon oil spill in the gulf of mexico. >> prosecutors are considering whether to charge mateen's wife. so far, there is no evidence she called police to warn them about her husband's plan here. >> officials in orlando a family assistance center for victims and their loved ones. >> you can come in and then go to the places where you think you might need either legal help or counseling help, or help with travel. or help with funeral arrangements. >> many of the wounded remain hospitalized. patients carter and friends were held hostage in a bathroom. >> i can see piles of bodies lying over the toilet seats and slumped over in the bottom of the toilet covered with land prints and blood. >> she and one of her friends survived. their friend 18-year-old akia murray did not. kenneth craig, cbs news, orlando. and a moving tribute from the washington nationals last night to honor the victims in the orlando massacre. the gay men's chorus of washington, d.c. gathered around home plate, while a giant rainbow flag opened up over the pitcher's mound. this is the nats 12th night out event and it was scheduled even before the sunday massacre in florida. one minute, they were stuck the next minute, they were helping to save lives on the georgetown parkway. nikki burdine has more on the good samaritans who jumped in quickly after a bus crash in mount vernon. >> reporter: the tour bus was leaving mount vernon here at about 5:00 yesterday in the heart of rush hour. and headed northbound, on the gw parkway. when the accident happened. police say good samaritans, if they had not stopped to help, it would have been a whole lot worse. >> police say in the middle of the chaotic scene, several people, many of them military, pulled over to help those trapped under the bus. they managed to flip it upright. and help get them to safety. in all, 15 people were rushed to the hospital, including two people in the vehicle that collided with the bus. now, police say they want to talk to those good samaritans. many of whom left before police got there. investigators hope those bystanders will be able to shed light on exactly what happened. >> i don't know who was at fault. but i could see how that could happen easily. >> reporter: people like bobby mahoney who frequent mount vernon know just how tricky this curve of the gw wa the concrete is split and it looks like three lanes and if you were to get into this one that look like a lane and follow that around the curb, you end up on the other side of the road. >> reporter: and especially for tour buses. just ask lieu you don't occurredoff who coordinates buses visiting mount vernon year round. >> this corridor in washington, d.c. and mount vernon is tough for buss to get through. it is a tight area with traffic going north and south. >> reporter: police say at this point it is still not clear who was at fault in the accident. the majority of the victims were chinese citizens visiting the area. in mount vernon, nikki burdine, wusa 9. >> most of the victims have been released from the hospital. two though are still in critical condition. turning now to campaign 2016, what is old is new again. on the dc council. former mayor vincent gray staged a successful comeback recapturing his ward seven seat from the incumbent yvette alexander. gray stopped by broadcast house [000:07:58;00] interview. >> it is a very exciting night. and i'm really grateful to, and express my appreciate, to the people of ward seven, for voting me back to be able to provide service to them. i'm really looking forward to it. >> trayonwhite won his rematch against ruby may and vincent orange was upset by robert white for a race with the at large seat on the city council. and in virginia, libby garvey won the county board in the virginia primary there. an unusual morning in the district today. at least five robberies happened through parts of the city. one assault sent a man to the hospital. most of these incidents were in northeast and in northwest. mikea turner went to all of the locations. the last stop, adams morgan where the most recent incident happened. >> reporter: this is a stack of police reports from the dc police department. the most recent robbery incident happening right here on columbia road. police say a man jumped out of this y,alle approached another and money. according to police reports, the first robbery of the morning started in the 4,000 block of minnesota avenue, and very close to where darren kelly lives. >> it is terrible. >> reporter: an 18-year-old man arranged to meet someone at park seven apartments to sell a cell phone. but the would-be customer got it for free, after snatching it, and some cash before running off. two hours later, a man was robbed at second and e streets in north west. according to police, he was attacked by two people who threw him to the ground, taking his wallet, cash and other belongings. >> everybody needs to be watching. >> 27th street in northeast wasn't a safe place to be a half hour later. no one was robbed but an argument broke out leading to a fierce assault. the victims taken to the hospital. a couple hours later a man and woman were robbed in the 1800 block of 8th street in northwest. the woman noticed they were being followed by two people who pulled out two handguns, pointing them at both victims. a second pair of victims were robbed in th around ak 5:00 a.m. police reports say a pair of suspects popped out of an alley both wearing face masks. the victims were held at gunpoint and stripped of personal belongings. >> ultimately we can get together, and find a solution for this. >> mikea turner reporting there. mission are still looking for -- police are still looking for suspects in all of those incidents. if you have any information, please call dc fishermen rescue a navy chopper crew after they crashed welcome back. france's leaders observed a minute of silence today. to honor the two police officers who were stabbed to death, outside paris. the killer, who had a connection to terrorists, attack, before he was killed in a police raid. anti-terror investigators are now questioning three suspects to determine whether or not the suspect was possibly working with a larger network. british prime minister david cameron condemned the deadly attack in orlando. here is what he had to say in parliament today. >> i know the whole house will join me in sending our profound sympathies to the family and friends of the 49 people who died in the horrific attack in orlando on sunday. this was an evil attack of terrorism and homophobic hatred and we utterly condemn both of them. >> prime minister cameron says he is now meeting with experts today, when it comes to talk about finding new ways to fight terrorism. in virginia, you could call it a three-generation rescue, a grandfather, a father and a son, rescued three navy airmen, after their helicopter crashed into the james river in new port news, during a training mission. chris atwell was out fishing with his family and he saw the chopper hit >> what were you thinking in your mind? >> we were going to have to pull up three dead bodies. because they didn't come up immediately. i was like oh, my god. >> but the crewmen survived and the fishing family pulled them into the boat. and one pilot pulled the patch off his flight suit and gave it to the man as a rescue. a woman was trapped in an suv in a river. >> and also, led zeppelin being sued by a man who said the group stole one of the most iconic rock and roll ball adds welcome back. led zeppelin is being sued by the estate of a man who says the band stole their song stairway to heaven. a lawyer for randy wolf claims british rockers lifted parts of the ballad from an instrumental tune that was recorded by his band called "spirit." >> page and plant said really they weren't aware of this song. there is evidence that they played at some festivals in the late '60s and possibly, i think there is evidence, yes, that they opened for spirit. but they claim that they didn't -- weren't really influenced by it. >> jimmy page and robert plant, led zeppelin, who he is talking about, and they claim part of the song they are accused of lifting is common, and it is found in works dating back to the 1600s. the new jersey man being held a hero after saving a woman who drove her car into the passaic river. jason moss pulled the 50-year- old unconscious woman from her car. as it was sinking. police are not sure exactly how bue ended up in the water. when she did. >> i kind of just took the natural reaction, because we didn't have time at that point. >> and doing what we should be doing. and human lives are valuable. >> police say the woman would have drowned if moss had not saved her. he said the woman's daughter messaged him on facebook to thank him and said her mom is doing fine now. now to baltimore, where the popular dolphin show at the national aquarium is being phased out. the move could pave the way for how animals are released from captivity. how they are treated in the future. don daler reports. >> reporter: more than a million people a year come to the national aquarium. and the dolphins are a major attraction. in this 1.3 million-gallon pool, they glide around, and flip. interacting with kids, and adults. trainers keep them occupied. give them daily checkups. and endless supplies of fish. >> chesapeake is 24. >> you can actually you would like. >> we will check the condition of the teeth and look at the tongue. >> the first dolphin born in the aquarium. >> you can see how calm she is with this. >> so how long have you had a relationship with her? >> i have been here for 10 years. and we are constantly building that trust and relationship. >> that relationship will soon change. within five years, the aquarium wants to move the dolphins to a sanctuary like this along an ocean front. they are looking at places such as florida and the caribbean. >> the operating principal is dolphins first. >> john wreckanelli is the ceo of the aquarium and this site will allow the dolphins to interact with other sea life. >> there will be crabs on the bottom and lobsters perhaps finding their way into crevices and jelly fish will drift in and out but these dolphins need to learn to cope with every single one of those natural features. >> because they have been fed almost their whole lives. >> we have to teach them how to be dolphins and they're smart, the good ne, cognitive capabilities. >> it is that intelligence that humans have started to grasp over the last 50 years. >> they call him flipper. flipper. >> in the 60s, americans were captivated by flipper. and wanted to see dolphins as well as other large and intelligent marine animals like orcas up close. >> in the 1990s, free willie showed the amazing escape of an orca whale. and in 2013, black fish exposed what captivity can do to marine animals. >> all whales in captivity are all psychologically traumatized. >> sea world is phasing out the orca show and even the ring bling brothers barnum and bailey circus has ended the elephant show. >> this has been a reaction to the fact that times have been changing dramatically from generation to generation. as attitudes change, we think that our attitude should, too. >> that was don daler reporting. people can still connect with the dolphins after they are releas with cameras so people can follow them on the internet. an interesting solution. >> yes. >> okay, first alert weather, time, howard is here, a few passing sprinkles, is it going to materialize into anything more serious? >> for the day, not too much more than that. a couple of showers and i think tomorrow night is when we have the best chance for heavier rain and maybe some gusty winds, with that. and the weekend, that is not looking too shabby at all. right now, first alert doppler, looking over the last three hours of the showers sha that have been moving west to east across the region. and heavier showers, when you see the yellows, moderate rain showers and light green here and there. that is pretty light. moving up and east and over to den ton right now and delaware. and a couple of spotty sprinkles coming through. and not much to talk about. and not all of this is even reaching the ground. and one more batch of light showers, from morefield now, down toward mathias and to the shenandoah valley, perhaps by together. a lot of clouds. that is the case, clouds with some sunny breaks today. it will be comfortable. not too hot. and low 80s, at best. and the south/southeasterly winds 5-10 with a chance of a couple of showers, even later today, and tonight. and might even have a rumble of thunder. the temperature, being held down, and where the rain was, we just saw, mid-60s here, look at this, frederick, 64. and westchester, 66. and closer to 70 in baltimore. where the sun is out, and upper september, and even around 80. and 77 at the patuxent naval air station. and only 67 in hagerstown. which it has been a cloudy day. michael and son weather camera at noon. lots of clouds. temperature in town, 76. no winds to speak of. the dew points are back above 60. the muggies have come back after a couple of sweet days to start the week. >> a lot of heat in the middle of the country. 99 in the middle of the country. st. louis. and it will stay away from us for a few days but it looks be above 90 degrees as the heat expands east. in the short term, storm system here spinning north of minneapolis, throwing waves of moisture off to the east and you can see the showers that we were just looking at. and future cast, shows spotty activity here this afternoon. and tonight, and tomorrow, a mix of sun and clouds. and isolated showers, too, in the afternoon. and better chance tomorrow night. with some heavier showers, and then finally some cooler drier air, will sink in here by friday afternoon. so beach forecast, if you're already thinking about that, friday is looking iffy, with some windy showers. only 72. but saturday, sunday, into monday, it looks a whole lot better. our forecast, today, 82. and spotty showers. maybe a shower or storm tonight. and tomorrow, closer to 80 again with. isolated showers. and better chance of the storms tomorrow night. and friday, the early rain in the morning, and clearing skies, and 80, and may have to lower that back into the 70s. it looks like a good finish to friday. the seven-day forecast, saturday, breezy, pleasant 81. looks good for dad's day on sunday and 84. and here comes the heat
