Released from prison after these conviction on a previous sex assault case was overturned in june. We have a reporter working on the story, and we will have the latest coming up on wusa9 news starting at 5 00 today. Good afternoon. Im mike hydeck. Todays other big story, Ebola Outbreak that has claimed thousands of lives in west africa is hitting home with the first case of the virus diagnosed here in the united states. Omar villafranca is in dallas why the unidentified patient is now in serious condition. Reporter cdc staff have arrived in dallas to help local Health Officials contain ebola virus now that the first u. S. Patient has been diagnosed. Theyre working to track down anyone who had contact with the male patient when he had symptoms. Well go every minute of each day with his family to understand who might have been exposed and every Health Care Interaction he had. Reporter ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from an infected person showing signs of the virus. The patient didnt have symptoms of ebola when flying from liberia to the u. S. On september 19. This man was not infectious when he got on the many. Weve check on the plane. Weve checked hundreds of people leaving liberia for fever. He didnt have fever. Anyone with fever is not allowed to board the plane. Reporter Health Officials here say there is a plan in mass place to handle ebola patients and theres no risk to others coming here for treatment. Still people in the community arworried. Im just worried that if we have our kids going to the doctors, that its a safe place to be. Reporter the ambulance that carried the patient in was in use afterwards but is now out of service for extensive decontamination. Omar villafranca, cbs news, dallas. The patient actually came to texas health late last week and was sent home with some nonspecific symptoms. Texas governor rick perry is going to be in dallas today to hold a News Conference on this states ebola case. Now that ebola is here in the united states, hospitals across the country are preparing for the possibility of infections in the future. Here to talk more about that is an Infectious Disease specialist at Inova Fairfax. Weve heard the comments from the director of the cdc yesterday. He said this will not abwidespread problem in the united states. But, doctor, People Living in and around here are wanting to know whats being done locally to prevent a possible small outbreak. At Inova Fairfax hospital and affiliated hospitals, we have set up a task force and were looking at all the details in terms of how we would proceed if we were in a situation where we had a case with east bola. Its happening in atlanta. Happening in dallas. Would that be the case here, too . If somebody had a suspicion for ebola, they would, for example, fever or headache or muscle pain and they were in a risk factor where they had been traveled to west africa, then they would be admitted to the hospital and put in isolation. But if they were a contact, like, for example, with this patient, then they would be in quarantined, meaning they would be observed for about 21 days. To remind people, this is spread how, once again . Again, as emphasized by dr. Frieden in that press conference yesterday and its been stated many times, its with close contact with bodily secretions such as saliva, blood, tears, or other types of bodily secretions. When you see these symptoms, a lot of them are similar to other illnesses. How can you tell the difference . Are they that much more severe or do you have to wait till they play out to see fits more serious than an average flu . I think we have to look at the whole picture and were giving the information to clinicians and were spreading that information to many of the urgent care families and the doctors in the community that in addition to fever, you have to have a risk of having traveled to these areas where weve seen ebola, specific the three or four countries in west africa and also specific symptoms, such as fever and headaches and muss him pains. There may be some overlap but we should err on the side of caution. Dr. Ambardar, we appreciate your time. Shes from Inova Fairfax hospital. Even when were not on the air, were staying on top of the story. For the latest updates on the first confirmed ebola case here in the until, you can go to wusa9. Com. An upper loafl low gave upper level low gave us some light sprinkles, some showers this morning. If fizzled over the Eastern Shore with all the rain up to parts of new england. This time of year tough to scour out. We have light winds, the lower sun angle in the fall and the lowlevel moisture gets difficult to get rid of. You do see darker areas around here. Thats the land coming through. So weve got more sunshine here but the bright white or thicker clouds to the west are keeping temperatures down. Theyre struggling under the air mass. Only 64 in winchester. Where the sun is out, were in the mid70s. Im expecting some sunny breaks to develop during the afternoon. Mainly dry. A stray shower and temps topping out in the mid and if we can get some sun, the upper 70s. Ill be back in a few minutes looking at the sevenday forecast. Big changes coming for the coming weekend. I think youre going to like those changes. Michael, back to you. Sounds good, howard. All you have to do is brush your teeth . Yup. Well be right back. In Fairfax County we had to cut a lot of waste. We consolidated offices. Started sharing printers. We can walk a few feet. Replaced computers, but kept the monitors. They still work fine. We even discovered that the phone company overcharged us by three Million Dollars i approve this message because congress doesnt need another right winger. They need someone who can balance a budget. Oh, and we definitely didnt need so many government studies. Welcome back. Are you one of the millions of people who suffer with allergies and you need medication just to breathe normally . Well, there are quite a few people who dont stick with their treatment. But now as marley hall reports, doctors have developed a unique way to treat allergies and its easy and convenient. Reporter derek is brushing his teeth and treating his allergies at the same time. Theres thog about it that seems nothing about it that seems any different than an ordinary toothpaste. Reporter the 31yearold is ledgic to dogs, cats, tees and dust. Hes one of 12 patients testing the toothpaste called allerdent at cornel medical college. The toothpaste is custom made for patients and contains extracts of what theyre allergic to. William reisacher developed the toothpaste. Hes studying whether its more effective than weekly allergy shots or daily allergy drops. The problem is when you send the treatment home, people forget to do it and its difficult for children to keep a liquid under their tongue for two minutes. Reporter the toothpaste can treat up to ten different allergies at one time. There can be side effects including itching and tingling in the mouth. Pumpkin problems on the west coast this year. Farmers say that drought in california is making the orange pumpkins ripen too quickly this year. The other day im going oh, my gosh, theyre ready to go right now. Reporter matt cooley says its almost frightening how fast his pumpkins are turning this year. Theres the bigger ones. Thats other thing. Usually the bigger ones take longer. This year theyre already ready. Reporter cooley says the per si tent drought and lack of persistent drought and lack of rain have caused his pumpkins to ripen two to three weeks early. A lot of big, orange, ready to go pumpkins here. We found a bunch were happy with. Because of the drought, theres not as much deep moisture in the ground. So when you water it, it just sucks it. The plant sucks it up right away. Reporter so the best time to buy this fall favorite is now, unless you want one of these squashy uh, i mean squishy ones. The ones that are going to be laying on the ground the end of october are going to look like they were the ones usually are laying around in november. Not necessarily a good thing. Reporter cool patch pumpkins is also known for the worlds biggest corn maze. This year, though, the drought has stunted the stalks. Not very tall. Some of them are bigger than others, but usually its really tall. Its about two feet shorter than it is. Reporter cooley doesnt expect the drought to dwindle his holiday business this season but the future of his farm all depends on the weather. If it doesnt rain this winter, we might not be able to do it next year. I love farmers. Theyre some of the most optimistic people that you can meet. Weather wise, we still have some clouds but notice the brightening here. Just a couple of breaks starting to show. A few more breaks as itself afternoon wears on. Temperatures shooting into the mid70s in washington. Where the clouds stay real thick, we may only get to 70 for a high. Not a lot of wind out of the east, northeast at 5 miles an hour or so. Just an isolated shower possible this afternoon and this evening. Its been a very dry september. A little sogginess here and there but we need some rain. We only had an inch and change at national airport. The average is three and three quarters. This ties for the 18th driest. The records go to around 1871, 1872. Dulles is the early 60s. This is the fourth driest on record. Not even an inch. About three inches below normal. Satellite and radar shows the showers from this morning. Weve got the rain from hartford up to boston, providence right now. Were just hanging tough with some clouds here. Quite a few breaks south and east. Thats allowed temperatures and we saw them a few minutes ago. Tappahannock in the mid70s. A lot of clouds, especially north and west and its only 65 degrees in germantown. Lovettsville 64. Bull run checking in with 62. A little bit warmer here in springfield and d. C. And also to crofton were looking at 70 degrees. The michael son weather camera, again mostly cloudy skies. 70 at national. Theres the wind or lack thereafter. Without that wind to mix up the atmosphere, all this moisture in the lower part cant mix out in the column. These clouds get tougher and tougher to break up this time of year. Big picture, theres your storm system up in new england but look at this. All these showers and storms coming out of missouri and iowa. Theres a cold front back there just off the map. This is going to move toward us and its going to arrive here friday night. Ahead of it well still be relatively mild. Without much in the way of a kicker other than a stray shower today and tonight, not much going on. If youre going to be southwest towards charlottesville, harrisonburg, stanton, a couple of showers going on tonight and also on thursday, but around here, i think well have a decent amount of sun in the afternoon. Theres that stray shower south and west on thursday afternoon. Partly to mostly sunny in the 70s. Friday, though, thats the day we watch. Weve got the orioles starting the new york series tomorrow. Nats start their series on friday. Both will have afternoon games on friday. It will be warmer. 70s to near 80. Here we are at 5 30. Futurecast doesnt bring the rain in till friday night overnight and out of here pretty early saturday. So that will work out well for the playoff games. The terps are home saturday, a noon kickoff. Even the tailgating i think will be all right. 77 today. That may be optimistic but generally dry. 62 in d. C. Tonight. Could be a patch of fog out there. A few 50s. Tomorrow upper 70s, a nice afternoon. Late showers friday, near 80 but better chance overnight friday night into early saturday morning. Cooler, breezy on saturday, 68. Cool on sunday.
