[ applause ] >> reporter: a big round of applause from democratic senators from majority leader harry reid who insists he is not wavering. senators from maryland and virginia detailed the pain this shutdown and debt ceiling deadline is having on our reason none particular. >> we're willing to -- on our region in particular. >> we're willing to negotiate. all we need to do is pass a short term funding resolution. >> reporter: but leaving the conservative republican study committee lunch, maryland congressman andy harris said reopening the government and raising the debt limit even for a few weeks would come at a price for the president and the democrats. >> would a short term deal work for you? >> well, for instance, raising the debt ceiling short term, sure, as long as we have spending cuts included in it. that's fine with me. >> reporter: on capitol hill, bruce leshan, wusa9. >> one thing the democrats and republicans can agree on is that families of fallen military members should receive death benefits during the government shutdown. the house did vote to restore those benefits this afternoon and defense secretary chuck hagel announced up those families each will get the $100,000 they are entitled to with help from the fisher house foundation. the pentagon will reimburse the charity when the government reopens. earlier today the white house said the president was disturbed to learn that the families of fallen soldiers were not receiving death benefits during the shutdown. a south carolina man armed with a leaf blower and public mower is taking it upon himself to fill in for national park service co-workers. chris cox calls himself the memorial militia picking up trash, clearing leaves and mowing the lawns near lincoln, world war ii and korean war memorials. cox wants to make sure the national mall is in good shape in advance of this weekend's million vet march. we are following breaking news out of west virginia tonight where a man opened fire on the federal courthouse in wheeling. the u.s. marshal service says that man fired 15 shots, maybe 20 with an assault-type rifle from a parking lot across the street. security officers fired back and killed him. one person was hurt by the shattered glass, nobody else injured. authorities are still trying to figure out why he'd do such a thing. abortion rights advocates won a small first step victory in their fight against virginia's new strict abortion clinic regulations. before today's hearing they held a rally at the arlington courthouse protesting those regulations which require abortion providers to meet hospital facility standards. providers say those measures are onerous and too costly. attorneys for the falls church health clinic which brought the lawsuit say the attorney general intimidated the board of health into not grandfathering those existing clinics. >> we obviously felt they overstepped their bounds in pushing the board to adopt a regulation the board was not inclined to adopt. >> the judge said he thought the case should get a full hearing so that appellate courts can ultimately decide the matter. president obama officially nominated janet yellen to be the next federal reserve chair. yellen is the fed's vice chair and is an advocate of the massive bond buying program that's been in place to help bolster the economy. if she's confirmed by the senate, she'd succeed ben bernanke and be the first woman to head a major central bank anywhere. it was a rough rush hour this morning for maryland drivers. a deadly crash closed the baltimore washington parkway four hours. a vehicle hit a man around 5 a.m. in the southbound lanes near route 175 in columbia. traffic was detoured for hours while police did investigate. then there was this, trash truck overturned dumping its load on the outer loop of the beltway at the ramp for the vw park a. boy, if that wasn't bad enough -- parkway. boy, if that wasn't bad enough, a car then slammed into the mountain of trash. traffic was backed up to fedex field. a 50-year-old man is recovering from injuries he suffered when he fell 15 feet down a vent shaft in arlington. he was walking in the 900 block of north wakefield street when a grate he stepped on collapsed. a ladder, ropes and basket stretcher was used to rescue him. topper, what's up? >> we got the rain in northwest, a little heavy, steadier. the rain has enveloped all of the metro area and heavier rain is on the way, a yellow alert tomorrow and friday. we'll tell you if we improve by the weekend. >> up next the redskins getting ready to take on the evil dallas cowboys, but today's owner dan snyder has something to say to everybody who says the team ought to change that the team ought to change that name.
