special valley. we begin with deadly news of a pedestrian strich just before 5:00 tonight. we were told an adult woman and child were struck. medics rushed the 3-year-old to the hospital with serious injuries, no names of the victims yet and we do not know if they are related. you probably saw storms move through the ar hours ago. we'll get to the other story momentarily. >> topper is tracking those storms that could cause problems with tomorrow night's commute. what do you think, top? >> tonight we're okay. if you want to have a cookout now, you're okay. let's look ahead. yellow alert tomorrow for afternoon storms in time for the kids to come back from school. the afternoon commute will be impacted. remember the day after labor day the traffic is a mess, so just get ready. we'll throw showers and storms into that mix and slow things down. time frame 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. we may extend that out a bit maybe to 9 p.m. remember traffic is always a bear the day after labor day. so tomorrow morning it will be muggy, temperatures in the 70s, a dry commute going to work, 77 by 5:30, 8:00 in the mid-70s and by 1:00 91 downtown, showers and storms popping up in the mountains and as early as 2:00, 3:00 some of the showers will be in our western suburbs. we'll come back, track those and talk about whether or not this cold front will break our heat. grief counselors will be at sherwood high school in olney tomorrow to help classmates come to grips with the death of a 15-year-old killed in a car crash over the weekend. today family, friends and neighbors returned to the site where shawn gangloff was killed saturday morning. as stephanie ramirez reports, many can't believe their friend is gone. >> reporter: this is the blanket of flowers that keeps growing at the base of a tree for shawn gangloff. it's the site where the 15-year- old and two other teens crashed early saturday. doctors pronounced gangloff dead yesterday sending shock waves throughout his community. ned popeck showed me what he left for schaub today. >> he always made you laugh when you were -- shawn today. >> he always made you laugh when you were down. >> he was an all around really, really great kid. >> reporter: abby palmer is a childhood friend who said shawn's death has left her thinking differently. >> when you see someone leave intoxicated, you need to speak up and i don't think enough people did that. >> reporter: the three teens involved were at a party before the crash. regardless of what happened that night, only community members tell us they're dealing with a life that ended too short with even those that didn't know the victim stopping by to pay respectings today. >> shawn's mom, she was my teacher. it's just, you know, shaken the whole community up. >> reporter: the sherwood high school principal also wrote in an e-mail today this is such a difficult time for the students involved in the accident, their families, our students and staff and the community. we are heartbroken. the principal also said they're working to provide those grieving classmates with help when students return tomorrow. back at the makeshift memorial derek perez says he's praying for everyone involved. >> i didn't think that it could happen to one of us or someone as close as us and as young as me. >> reporter: tomorrow when students return to school, fellow students say they'll wear their sherwood high school colors and uniforms to remember shawn gangloff. in olney stephanie ramirez, wusa9. meantime police in fairfax are spending part of their holiday investigating a suspicious death. cops were called to belleview drive in falls church after 2:00 this morning a few blocks from the intersection of leesburg pike and columbia pike. police found the body of a man with injuries to his upper body. investigators say there's no reason to believe there is a killer on the loose. while labor day is the traditional end of summer it is also the traditional start of the political season and in the maryland governor's race things turned nasty a while ago. >> bruce leshan was hiking the parade route today talking to the candidates. sz da >> reporter: maybe it was just a coincidence, but gaithersburg parade organizers stuck republican gubernatorial candidate larry hogan near the end of the line right behind the sons of confederate veterans. >> we didn't have much to do with that obviously. this is where they stuck us in the parade. >> reporter: at least one spectator is convinced it is a conspiracy. >> we're already up to 10 democrats in the parade lineup and we haven't gotten to any montgomery county republicans. >> they might as well ask them to carry the garbage cans and the brooms to sweep up the horse manure. >> reporter: it has been a dozen years since a republican has won the maryland governors race and before republican bob ehrlich beat lackluster democrat kathleen kennedy townsend the gop had seen decades of drought. >> we're not going to build a better maryland if we follow the larry hogan agenda which is to give big corporate tax give- aways and fight for the wealthy few. >> reporter: democrat anthony brown says hogan is out of touch. >> republican larry hogan opposes raising the minimum wage, opposes universal pre-k. >> we're going to invest in quality education and take assault weapons off the streets. >> the lieutenant governor is lying about my record. i've always been a moderate. >> reporter: hogan did get some that a boys. >> good luck. we need you. >> reporter: but it is a long hike from a labor day parade to an election day victory against an incumbent lieutenant governor in a state where democrats outnumber republicans by 2-1. in gaithersburg bruce leshan, wusa9. >> a poll released late last month by a republican leaning pollster suggests the race is remarkably close, but earlier polls by independent pollsters suggested brown had a wide lead. here's something to think about as you hit the grill for round works maryland over a proposed firing range in the shadow of sugar loaf mountain. >> some residents who live near the farm where a state of the art firearms train centering is planned are bitterly opposed but not for all the reasons you might think. >> reporter: even some gun enthusiasts here in rural frederick county, maryland are saying the gun range proposal is in the wrong place. sugar loaf mountain, a natural historic landmark nature preserve and in its shadow, a winery, equestrian center, secluded homes and overwhelming oppositions to a state of the art firearms training center now considered at the foot of the mountain where noise like this is not welcome. >> we will hear constant gunfire. >> reporter: that's doug kaplan. >> we're very concerned about that. >> reporter: his wife peggy, a couple with their own personal arsenal but no interest in a shooting range near their house because this is what it sounds like without one. >> we would have to move. that is for sure and that would break my heart. >> it's all about property rights. >> reporter: frederick county commission member billy shreeve says whether you are for or against the gun range the reality is the zoning here allows it on property many times smaller than the 300-acre spread where range developers plan to install sound baffles and keep much of the shooting indoors. >> this is as much an environmental center as a training center for firearms. one of ranges is completelien doors. they also have sim you -- completely indoors. they also have simulators. >> reporter: but the wide range of opponents include businesses like the greenbrier pet hospital and boarding facility where homeowners are convinced distant gunfire will stress the animals. >> i'm less concerned about what i and my staff can hear. everybody knows the dogs' hearing is twice as good as ours. >> reporter: opponents of the shooting range definitely have community passion on their side, but the supporters of the vaccination or they'll be kept out of school. the clinics will be open in germantown, rockville and silver spring. thousands turned out to say good-bye to summer at this labor day festival in greenbelt, maryland. this is the 59th year. it's one of the largest all volunteer events in maryland. they celebrated labor day in herndon with a little wine testing. the herndon labor day festival is wrapping up for the night, but earlier festivalgoers got a chance to taste wine from local wineries, food and music. how should your kids dress for back to school? topper says storms could impact the heavy downpours are possible and the timing is just such it's not a good time for showers as you try to get home on what usually is a terrible day in terms of traffic. by midnight we're in good shape, some clouds lingering, but showers are gone. it will be muggy tomorrow night. wednesday night it will be cooler. tonight partly cloudy and muggy. i took the shower out. patchy fog late. cookouts are safe, temperatures 68 to 75 for lows. tomorrow morning partly sunny, hot by lunchtime, 68 to 90, yeah, night by lunchtime. by afternoon partly sunny, hot, humid with thunderstorms developing, high temperatures 90 to 95, winds south, southwest at 10. look at these temps, 78 by 9:00, a little sticky, 86 by 11:00 and 91 by 1:00, but dry through that period. yellow alert tomorrow, 93, afternoon storms, hot wednesday, 90, isolated storms on thursday, 90. next seven days a lot going on, nats coming back into town friday, dry, 91. saturday showers and thunderstorms for the nats, looking at temperatures in the low 90s and then on sunday cooler, front goes through, mid- 80s sunday. that's nice for both the nats and the ravens and then look at monday, sunshine, temperatures back in the low
