>> reporter: the state police flagged her down with a ruse, reportedly, that there were sparks under her car. >> we want her back. >> reporter: 20 or more women came forward and described a white guy about's feet tall who tried the same trick on them. two months after alicia disappeared, a local spotted vultures and found her body in a desolate field. >> it had to be someone who knew the area. >> reporter: the showalter family long so -- long suspected a serial killer who murdered others. >> usually don't have two serial killers in the same area around the same time. >> reporter: investigators told the evidence is unlikely. >> the only other possibility is that there is an unidentified suspect. >> reporter: the family is desperate -- desperate enough for answers to plead directly with the daughter's killer. >> we ask why hide? you've been hit long enough. >> she is missed greatly. >> reporter: virginia state police said that this is still an active case and investigators are actively pursuing alicia's killer. they said they remain hopeful that someday they will solve her murder. >> the family hopes that this anniversary jars someone memory -- someone's memory. if you have anything you think might help, call the virginia state police in culpeper or at the bureau of criminal investigation. breaking news out of oxon hill. a teenager has been shot and apartment building on south drive on wusa9. ellison barber just arrived on the scene and has more information. >> reporter: as you said, that teenager was gunned down outside the apartment complex and police said he was rushed to the hospital where he later died. i want to get a sense of what is going on at the scene. number of detectives have been talking to people. who did this and what you know right now? >> about 2:50 this afternoon we received a call of a shooting. there was a gunshot wound and the victim was taken to the hospital. the officers are still canvassing the scene. they will let the public know. if you have information, come forward as soon as possible so we can put the public's mind to rest. >> reporter: one of the first things we noticed, was a school bus dropping children off. there is a high school. potomac high school is not far. you think there's any contact -- connection to the high school and the suspect or the victim? >> it's early. it's very concerning because we have children walking by and we have a school nearby. school nearby. it's important to get the suspect off the streets as soon as possible. >> reporter: again, no suspect or motive. if you know anything, no matter how small, police would like you to give them a call. in oxon hill, ellison barber, wusa9. >> we go to fairfax county where police identified an officer who shot and killed a man in for and and in january. he's lance guck and berger and he and othersresponded to the scene on covered wagon lane and investigators said a 32-year- old shot and wounded two men in his townhouse and then set fire to the place while holding another man hostage. police confronted him and they said it had a kne fired rubber bullets and a taser and when that didn't stop him, the officer found the shot -- fired the car -- fired the shot that killed him. here's what we know about goo ken berger. he is a 16-year veteran of the force. the fbi and fairfax police search for human remains and found potential evidence related to gang activity. northern virginia bureau chief peggy fox is live where the search continues. >> reporter: the search is going on behind those houses and we know what's related to possible gang activity. it might be connected to two recent gang murders or the disappearance of two teenage boys. several evidence collectors wearing white suits moved through the thick woods wrapping up what official said is potential evidence and what may be a gang-related crime. it's the second day of a search with neighbors nearby wondering. >> no one knows if it is local or from another jurisdiction. i don't know what to make of it. what can you do? you don't know anything. >> reporter: a large fbi truck is among many of the vehicles parked at the command posts. it is set up in the parking lot of the parkland community pool next to the stream. it runs adjacent to a popular trail and this locker was undeterred today. >> what do you think when you look at this?
